Abstract:The oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) has garnered significant interest for its application in treating automobile exhaust. In this study, we employed the sol-gel method to synthesize a series of cobalt -zirconium oxide catalysts with various Co/Zr ratios, aiming to catalyze the oxidation of CO effectively. The findings showed that the Co 90 Zr 10 catalyst, with a cobalt -to -zirconium ratio of 90:10, not only exhibited exceptional catalytic efficiency, achieving a 90 % conversion of CO at 94 degrees C, but also sustained superior thermal stability and resistance to water. The presence of both cobalt defects and oxygen vacancies significantly enhances the catalytic activity, which is attributed to the doping of zirconium. The characterization analyses indicated the incorporation of zirconium into the Co 3 O 4 spinel lattice modifies the valence states (Co 3+ /Co 2+ ) and geometries (Co Oh /Co Td ) of the cobalt cations. This alteration results from a variety of partial electron transfers and substitution sites. Enhanced ratios of Co 3+ /Co 2+ and Co Oh /Co Td in the Co x Zr y catalysts lead to improved reducibility and oxygen mobility. Consequently, this facilitates the lower -temperature oxidation of intermediates during the catalytic conversion of CO. DFT result showed that the Co 3 O 4 after Zr doped has lower adsorption energy and revealed the reaction mechanism of CO catalytic oxidation.

Abstract:Ceria modified Co3O4 catalysts for low temperature CO oxidation were prepared by a precipitation-oxidation method, and characterized by low-temperature N-2 adsorption/desorption, TPR, O-2-TPD, CO-TPD and transient-response reaction. The roles of ceria in CeO2-Co3O4 catalyst and the effect of pretreatment on the performance of CeO2-Co3O4 for CO oxidation were investigated in detail. The results show that the presence of CeO2 can increase its surface area, reduce the crystal size of Co3O4, and improve obviously the catalytic activity and stability of Co3O4 for CO oxidation, such as its T-100 is only -60 degrees C. It was also found that the addition of CeO2 can not only promote the adsorption of O-2 and the reaction of adsorbed CO with surface oxygen species to form CO2, but also increase the CO2 desorption speed. The pretreatment method can affect the catalytic activity of CeO2-Co3O4, the catalyst treated in N-2 exhibits higher catalytic activity for low-temperature CO oxidation due to formation of oxygen vacancy. The catalyst reduced in H-2 shows lower activity for CO oxidation although it has more surface oxygen vacancies, because of the difficult desorption of CO2 on the reduced CeO2-Co3O4 catalyst.

Abstract:Highly efficient In2O3-Co3O4 catalysts were prepared for ultralow-temperature CO oxidation by simultaneously tuning the CO adsorption strength and oxygen activation over a Co3O4 surface, which could completely convert CO to CO2 at temperatures as low as -105 °C compared to -40 °C over pure Co3O4, with enhanced stability.

Abstract:Pt nanoclusters (Pt-C) on the surface of ceria-zirconia solid solutions exhibit superior low-temperature CO oxidation activity compared to Pt single atoms (Pt-1). However, the redispersion behavior of the Pt-C to Pt-1 lowers the efficiency of CO Oxidation. In this work, the stable surface hydroxyl groups were constructed by high-temperature hydrothermal aging treatment. Specifically, the Pt-1 catalyst (Pt/CZOe-SA) prepared by atom trapping was subjected to high-temperature hydrothermal treatment to obtain the stable Pt-C catalyst (Pt/CZOe-HT) with in-situ formed Pt-C. The experimental results showed that Pt-C with 2-3 nm size could achieve excellent low-temperature activity and thermal stability. In addition, the ab initio molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations revealed the specific evolution process of dynamic dispersion for Pt-C with or without hydroxyl groups from the femtosecond scale, suggesting that the hydroxyl groups limited the dispersion of Pt-C in the form of "energy fence". The hydrothermal treatment not only introduced high-temperature stable hydroxyl groups to improve the stability of the in-situ formed Pt-C, but also optimized the ratio of Pt-1 and Pt-C, and then enhanced the low-temperature activity by the synergistic effect between Pt-1 and Pt-C. The present work can provide theoretical guidance for developing high-performance and high-stability Pt-based catalysts.

Abstract:Development of transition metal oxide catalysts with a tunable structure is extremely important for energy, chemical and environmental processes. Herein, we report a new strategy for the synthesis of a highly stable and active Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction with high-energy interfacial structures through two-step hydrothermal-crystallization for efficient low-temperature CO catalytic oxidation. By selectively etching, an anatase TiO2 support exposing the high-index (112) facet was first created. The high-index (112) facet with high surface energy can endow the bulk TiO2 support with unique physical and chemical properties so as to act as a foundation to construct a robust high-energy interfacial bulk heterojunction. Because of the presence of Ti–O–Co species at the high-energy interface, the prepared Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction possessed much more catalytic active sites compared to Co3O4 nanoparticles supported on conventional TiO2 supports and exhibited a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 3.56 × 10−3 s−1 at 120 °C, which was very competitive compared to those of reported cobalt-based catalysts and 1000 times higher than that of commercial Co3O4. Importantly, due to the strong interactions between Co3O4 and the TiO2 bulk support exposed high-index facet, more attractive water-resisting properties for low temperature CO oxidation can be achieved in the presence of steam (∼2%) compared to previously reported catalysts. The results show promising opportunities for tailoring catalytic behaviors beyond a facile and rational design with a controllable metal–support interface.
Low-temperature CO oxidation over Cu/Pt co-doped ZrO2 nanoparticles synthesized by solution combustion

Abstract:Zirconia (ZrO2) nanoparticles co-doped with Cu and Pt were applied as catalysts for carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation. These materials were prepared through solution combustion in order to obtain highly active and stable catalytic nanomaterials. This method allows Pt2+ and Cu2+ ions to dissolve into the ZrO2 lattice and thus creates oxygen vacancies due to lattice distortion and charge imbalance. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) results showed Cu/Pt co-doped ZrO2 nanoparticles with a size of ca. 10 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectra confirmed cubic structure and larger oxygen vacancies. The nanoparticles showed excellent activity for CO oxidation. The temperature T50 (the temperature at which 50% of CO are converted) was lowered by 175 °C in comparison to bare ZrO2. Further, they exhibited very high stability for CO reaction (time-on-stream ≈ 70 h). This is due to combined effect of smaller particle size, large oxygen vacancies, high specific surface area and better thermal stability of the Cu/Pt co-doped ZrO2 nanoparticles. The apparent activation energy for CO oxidation is found to be 45.6 kJ·mol-1. The CO conversion decreases with increase in gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) and initial CO concentration.

Abstract:Three types of CuO-CeO2/ZrO2 catalysts were prepared with ZrO2 as the support by different impregnation sequences, and were calcined at different temperatures (500, 650 and 800 degrees C). These catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction by H-2 or CO (H-2-TPR, CO-TPR), and temperature-programmed desorption of CO (TPD) techniques. Their catalytic activities for low temperature CO oxidation were investigated using a microreactor-gas chromatograph system. The results indicate that the catalytic activity for the catalysts calcined at 650 degrees C is the highest and is in the following order: CuO/CeO2/ZrO2>CuO-CeO2/ZrO2>CeO2/CuO/ZrO2. Based on the results of characterizations and catalytic activity measurements, we propose that the well-dispersed CuO is the center for adsorption of CO and is favorable for low-temperature CO oxidation, and the bulk CuO contributes little to the catalytic activity because of its inability to adsorb CO. Among the three types of catalysts, CuO/CeO2/ZrO2 has better low-temperature redox property, larger CO2 desorption peak area and higher catalytic activity for CO oxidation.

Abstract:Shapes of catalysts to comeTricobalt tetraoxide (Co3O4) has been much investigated as a potential catalyst for the low-temperature oxidation of carbon monoxide, useful for example in automotive emission control. Although this material is active even at sub-zero temperatures, it is highly sensitive to even trace amounts of moisture. Xiaowei Xie et al. now establish that Co3O4 in the form of nanorods shows higher catalytic activity, and enhanced stability in the presence of water; they attribute these improvements to the high density of catalytically active Co3+ sites exposed on the nanorod surface. Health risks associated with cobalt use mean that this specific material might not found widespread application for air purification, but these findings demonstrate the potential for morphological control for improving the performance of transition metal oxide catalysts.

Abstract:Via investigating the evolution of carbonate intermediates by in-situ DRIFTS (25 degrees C-350 degrees C) analysis, temperature-dependent reaction pathways of CO oxidation over Co3O4 nanorods are successfully proposed. The types of reactive oxygen species participated in CO oxidation may affect the way CO react with neighboring oxygen atoms. Additionally, the negative effect of water and CO2 on the catalytic activity was also studied. Considering the remarkable reactivity towards CO, the Co3O4 catalysts were integrated onto metallic and cordierite monolithic substrates and used for CO conversion as application. SEM examinations show that the catalyst layer was coated on the substrates uniformly with few microcracks, and desirable mechanical shock and thermal shock resistance was observed. The influence of substrate materials, gas hourly space velocity, the existence of water vapor and CO2, and reaction time on the CO oxidation performance of monolithic catalysts was investigated. Metallic monolithic catalysts performed higher CO oxidation activity mainly owing to superior heat conductivity and larger surface area compared with cordierite monolithic catalysts. It is noticeable that superior activity was also achieved under high gas flow with the existence of H2O (5.6 vol.%) and CO2 (7 vol.%) at 220 degrees C, suggesting great promise for practical application.

Abstract:A series of mesoporous nanocrystalline Ce-Zr solid solutions with different Ce/Zr ratios were successfully synthesized by the evaporation-induced self-assembly strategy, and were employed as catalytic supports of CuO-based catalysts for CO oxidation. These supports and catalysts were systematically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), N-2 physisorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersed spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H-2 temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), CO2 temperature programmed desorption (CO2-TPD), etc. The catalytic performances toward CO oxidation had been carefully evaluated over these CuO-based catalysts. The effects of various influencing factors, such as the Ce/Zr ratio, mesostructure, redox properties of the support, CuO loading amount and calcination temperature, on the low-temperature catalytic activity had been carefully investigated. The results showed that the catalyst supported on the support with a Ce/Zr ratio of 80/20 exhibited the highest catalytic activity. It was also found that the Ce-Zr solid solution mesoporous catalysts exhibited much higher catalytic activity than the counterparts without evident mesostructure, demonstrating the advantages of the mesoporous catalysts by providing more accessible catalytically active sites. Besides, the mesoporous Ce-Zr solid solution-supported catalysts with excellent redox properties displayed much better catalytic performances than the commercial gamma-Al2O3-supported catalyst. The kinetic study also indicated that the apparent activation energy of the CO oxidation process was greatly affected by the Ce/Zr ratio, mesostructure, and redox properties of the support. Overall, the present CuO-based catalysts with mesoporous nanocrystalline Ce-Zr solid solutions as supports were considered as a series of promising catalysts for CO oxidation.
Studies on the Preparation of Co3O4/CeO2 Materials and Their Applications on CO Oxidation at Low-Temperature

Abstract:Co3O4/CeO2 catalysts are prepared through co-precipitation-oxidation method and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface areas (SSA) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). Effect of the cobalt content on the physical and chemical performance on the compound oxide is reviewed. The carbon monoxide oxidation is investigated in humid and dry conditions. It is found that the addition of CeO2 can decrease the crystallite size of Co3O4, the particle sizes of Co3O4 in the Co3O4/CeO2 composite (Co to Ce atomic ratio =9 /1) is calcined at 723 K and calculated to be 9.5 nm on average and the SSA surface area is 119.8 m2/g. Under dry condition, Co3O4 displays higher activity than Co3O4/CeO2 composite for CO oxidation. On the contrary, Co3O4/CeO2 (Co to Ce atomic ratio =9/1) catalyst exhibits better resistance to moisture than pure Co3O4 does.

Abstract:Catalysts for CO oxidation reaction are mainly based on oxide/hydroxide materials with multicomponent active sites. Here, we report a nonoxide/hydroxide material, atomically dispersed dual-metal single sites (Fe-Co sites) on N-doped carbon support, as a highly active catalyst for CO oxidation. It can greatly lower the temperature for complete CO conversion as low as -73 degrees C with a turnover frequency of 0.096 s(-1). X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectra, pulse-adsorption microcalorimetry, and density functional theory studies show that the Fe-Co sites synergistically catalyze CO oxidation facilely following the Langmuir Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism with CO preferentially adsorbing at the Co sites and O-2 adsorbing at the Fe sites. These results, for the first time, reveal that the dual-metal single site on N-doped carbon can efficiency catalyze low-temperature CO oxidation reaction without the involvement of supports, such as oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups.

Abstract:Low-temperature oxidation of CO, perhaps the most extensively studied reaction in the history of heterogeneous catalysis, is becoming increasingly important in the context of cleaning air and lowering automotive emissions. Hopcalite catalysts (mixtures of manganese and copper oxides) were originally developed for purifying air in submarines, but they are not especially active at ambient temperatures and are also deactivated by the presence of moisture. Noble metal catalysts, on the other hand, are water tolerant but usually require temperatures above 100 degrees C for efficient operation. Gold exhibits high activity at low temperatures and superior stability under moisture, but only when deposited in nanoparticulate form on base transition-metal oxides. The development of active and stable catalysts without noble metals for low-temperature CO oxidation under an ambient atmosphere remains a significant challenge. Here we report that tricobalt tetraoxide nanorods not only catalyse CO oxidation at temperatures as low as -77 degrees C but also remain stable in a moist stream of normal feed gas. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy demonstrates that the Co(3)O(4) nanorods predominantly expose their {110} planes, favouring the presence of active Co(3+) species at the surface. Kinetic analyses reveal that the turnover frequency associated with individual Co(3+) sites on the nanorods is similar to that of the conventional nanoparticles of this material, indicating that the significantly higher reaction rate that we have obtained with a nanorod morphology is probably due to the surface richness of active Co(3+) sites. These results show the importance of morphology control in the preparation of base transition-metal oxides as highly efficient oxidation catalysts.

Abstract:We report the low-temperature catalytic reactivity of Zn+ ions confined in ZSM-5 zeolite toward CO oxidation. In situ DRIFT and ESR spectroscopy demonstrated that molecular O-2 is readily activated by Zn+ ion to produce O-2(-) species at room temperature (298 K) via facile electron transfer between Zn+ ion and O-2 and that the formation of the active O-2(-) species is responsible for the high activity of the ZnZSM-5 catalyst toward CO oxidation.
The Role of Iron Oxide in the Highly Effective Fe-modified Co3O4 Catalyst for Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:A series of iron modified cobalt oxide catalysts (FeaCobOx (b:a = MCo:MFe, 10 < x < 15)) were prepared by a co-precipitation method, characterized by nitrogen adsorption–desorption, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, H2-temperature programmed reduction, CO-temperature-programmed desorption, O2-temperature-programmed desorption and time-resolved CO titration, and their catalytic activities for CO oxidation were evaluated. When Co:Fe is 8:2 (mol), the Fe2Co8Ox catalyst exhibits a very high catalytic activity, in which CO can be completely converted to CO2 at −80 °C. The results show that the addition of Fe to Co3O4 can increase its surface area and inhibit the agglomeration of iron oxide, improve the reduction behaviour of Co3O4, optimize the ratio of Co3+:Co2+ on the catalyst surface, and promote CO adsorption and CO2 desorption on the catalyst surface. The oxygen species on Fe2Co8Ox are more active than those on Co3O4, and when the feed gas is lacking in oxygen the lattice oxygen of Fe2Co8Ox can easily overflow to the surface to participate in the oxidation of CO.
Low-Temperature Co Oxidation Over Cuo/Co3o4 Catalysts

Abstract:Copper cobalt composite oxide catalysts have been prepared by co-precipitation method. The prepared samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectra and nitrogen adsorption to determine the specific surface areas (S-BET). The catalytic activity and stability of samples were investigated for CO oxidation by using a microreactor-GC system. The results indicate that the copper cobalt composite oxide catalysts exhibited obviously higher catalytic activity for CO oxidation than that of individual CuO or Co3O4 with CO total conversion at 80 degrees C and their stability was quite well. The catalytic activity of the catalysts prepared by co-precipitation increases by increasing the calcination temperature from 150 to 200 degrees C and decreases from 200 to 500 degrees C. The effect of the volume of NaOH (2.0 mol/L), ageing time, calcination temperature, calcination time, the molar ratios of copper to cobalt and the specific surface areas on the catalytic activity of the catalysts was investigated in this paper.

Abstract:Co3O4/CeO2 catalyst was prepared by co-precipitation-oxidation method.Adsorption of carbon monoxide and the co-adsorption of CO/O2 over Co3O4/CeO2 sample were investigated.In situ FT-IR analysis of the mechanism in CO oxidation was interpreted over Co3O4/CeO2 sample.Effects of the reaction conditions on the catalytic performance over Co3O4/CeO2 catalyst for carbon monoxide oxidation was investigated at humid and dry conditions.Results indicated that the addition of cerium to the cobalt oxide was beneficial for CO oxidation over Co3O4 at humid condition.The formation of carbonate species with reaction on Co3O4/CeO2 composite oxide slightly deactivated the catalyst.When the temperature was as low as 453 K,the dynamic equilibrium of formation and decomposition of carbonate species existed in Co3O4/CeO2 composite oxide catalyst.The carbonate species disappeared above 493 K.The strong interaction between CeO2 and Co3O4 may contribute to the excellent water resistance for low-temperature CO oxidation over Co3O4/CeO2 catalyst at humid condition.
Low-temperature CO Oxidation over Co3O4-based Catalysts: Significant Promoting Effect of Bi2O3 on Co3O4 Catalyst

Abstract:The modification of Co3O4 by Bi2O3 significantly enhanced its catalytic performance for CO oxidation. The 20 wt.% Bi2O3-Co3O4 exhibited the best catalytic performance. The results of H-2-TPR and CO-TPR revealed that the mobility of oxygen was accelerated greatly and the ability of low-temperature oxygen activation was the crucial factor to improve the catalytic performance. Bi2O3 entered the lattice of Co3O4 caused the structural defect and lattice distortion, which should be the origin of the high O-2 activation ability and mobility. Structure-performance correlation demonstrated that the low-temperature oxygen activation was dependent on the defective degree of structure, which was determined by the content of Bi2O3 . The catalytic behaviors under different reaction conditions revealed that CO could effectively adsorb on the surface active sites and CO2 could competitively adsorb on the active sites. The ability to supply the active O-2 species was suggested to be a key step. The kinetic data showed not only the amount of surface active sites were increased on the surface of Co3O4 but also the catalytic ability of single active site was enhanced greatly.
