Abstract:Internetware can be formed through aggregation of Internetware entities bottom-up to satisfy the user’s requirements. In the process, capability description of Internetware entity plays an important role. This paper proposes a capability description of Internetware entity based on environment ontology. The environment ontology includes environment entities and possible interactions with the environment entities in a particular domain. Tree-like hierarchical state machines are also included in the ontology to describe domain life-cycle of the environment entities. On the basis of the ideas, the capability of Internetware entity is embodied by interacting with environment entities and the changes of the environment entities during the interactions. Finally, this paper describes the matchmaking between capability descriptions of Internetware entities to support the discovery of Internetware entity. An example of online education course is given to illustrate the ideas.

Abstract:During Web service discovery, capabilities of Web services are of major concern. This paper proposes an environment ontology based approach for specifying Web service capability semantically. First, a meta-level environment ontology is adopted in the proposed approach to provide formal and sharable specifications of environment resources in a particular domain. For each environment resource, we build a corresponding hierarchical state machine specifying its dynamic characteristics. Second, we propose to use the effect of a Web service on its environment resources for specifying the Web service capability and to designate the effect as the traces of the state transitions the Web service can impose on its environment resources. Finally, we give the mechanism to match service query with service capability description.

Abstract:In our daily lives, as in science and in all other domains, we encounter huge numbers of dispositions (tendencies, potentials, powers) which are realized in processes such as sneezing, sweating, shedding dandruff, and on and on. Among this plethora of what we can think of as mere dispositions is a subset of dispositions in whose realizations we have an interest a car responding well when driven on ice, a rabbits lungs responding well when it is chased by a wolf, and so on. We call the latter capabilities and we attempt to provide a robust ontological account of what capabilities are that is of sufficient generality to serve a variety of purposes, for example by providing a useful extension to ontology-based research in areas where capabilities data are currently being collected in siloed fashion.

Abstract:Automated Web service discovery requires Web service capability specifications of a high precision. Semantic-based approaches are inherently more precise than conventional keyword-based approaches. This paper proposes to build capability specifications of Web services based on an environment ontology, the main concepts of which are the environment entities in a particular application domain and their interactions. For each environment entity, there is a tree-like hierarchical state machine modeling the effects that are to be achieved by the Web services on this environment entity. The proposed approach is based on the assumption that the Web service capability specifications, built on the effects of the Web services on the environment entities, are more accessible and observable. Algorithms for constructing the domain environment ontology and the matchmaking between the Web service capability specifications are presented to show how Web service discovery is supported. An example on travel service is given to illustrate this proposed approach.

Abstract:An Actor-based object model is proposed, which deliberates upon both the properties of agent model and some kernel ideas of CSP model. This new approach enhances object's ability of representing dynamic behavior. Experiment results in the simulation of autonomous robot architecture demonstrate the high effectiveness of this model.

Abstract:Emotions have been shown to have a significant influence on the decision-making process of human beings and, thus, play an important role in intelligent behavior. But it is the problem how Intelligent Systems obtain the abilities of emotions such as recognizing, expressing and reasoning emotions. Our viewpoint is that emotions should be developed in the activities of interaction, which occur between Intelligent System and environment. The environment can be users or other agents. To cater to this point, we propose an agent model of emotion development. The agent model is based on OCC Model and Operant Conditioning Theory. We define a set of functions based on OCC Model to search the emotional state-space graph. At the same time, we give the algorithm of Operant Conditions procedure. With User interface and Manager interface, the agent will get input of stimulus, which may be the feedback of its actions. Then through the process of Operant Conditioning functions, and generalize the emotional knowledge. After replays the procedure again and again, it will try to obtain the abilities of emotions.

Abstract:This paper introduces a services modeling ontology that describes Services requirements in terms of strategic capabilities of an actor. We argue that the modeling language together with heuristic rules-based reasoning mechanism offer a potentially more substantive approach to understand the nature of service systems in a variety of social contexts. Furthermore, understanding the underlying assumptions and constructs through the use of the services capability modeling framework will not only inform researchers of a better design for service-oriented systems, but also assist in the understanding of intricate relationships between different factors that services are situated in. We present a few illustrative services situations as proof-of-concept examples to illustrate the proposed approach.

Abstract:This paper proposes constructing an environment ontology to represent domain knowledge about Web services. The capability of a Web service is considered in terms of the effects it imposes on the environment during execution. Thus, more fundamental and precise semantic specification for service capability than conventional interface-based description language can be obtained. Basic concepts of the ontology include resources residing in the environment. For each environment resource, there is a corresponding hierarchical state machine specifying its dynamic characteristics. Thus, the influence of a machine on its environments can be modelled with the state machines of the environment resources. Rules and algorithms to construct an environment ontology on the basis of generic domain ontology are introduced. And then guidelines for specifying Web service capability semantically based on the constructed environment ontology are given.

Abstract:A new class of information system architecture, decision-oriented service systems, is spreading more and more. Decision-oriented service systems provide services that support decisions in business processes and products based on the capabilities of cloud-computing environments. To pave the way for the creation of design methods of business processes and products based on decision-oriented service systems, this article introduces a capability-oriented approach. Starting from technological capabilities, more abstract operational and dynamic capabilities are created. The framework created is based on an integrated conceptualization of decision-oriented service systems that allows capturing synergetic effects. By creating the framework, the gap between the technological capabilities of technologies and the strategic goals of enterprises shall be narrowed.

Abstract:Stakeholders' expectations and technology constantly evolve during the lengthy development cycles of a large-scale computer based system. Consequently, the traditional approach of baselining requirements results in an unsatisfactory system because it is ill-equipped to accommodate such change. In contrast, systems constructed on the basis of Capabilities are more change-tolerant; Capabilities are functional abstractions that are neither as amorphous as user needs nor as rigid as system requirements. Alternatively, Capabilities are aggregates that capture desired functionality from the users' needs, and are designed to exhibit desirable software engineering characteristics of high cohesion, low coupling and optimum abstraction levels. To formulate these functional abstractions we develop and investigate two algorithms for Capability identification: Synthesis and Decomposition. The synthesis algorithm aggregates detailed rudimentary elements of the system to form Capabilities. In contrast, the decomposition algorithm determines Capabilities by recursively partitioning the overall mission of the system into more detailed entities. Empirical analysis on a small computer based library system reveals that neither approach is sufficient by itself. However, a composite algorithm based on a complementary approach reconciling the two polar perspectives results in a more feasible set of Capabilities. In particular, the composite algorithm formulates Capabilities using the cohesion and coupling measures as defined by the decomposition algorithm and the abstraction level as determined by the synthesis algorithm.

Abstract:System-of-systems (SoS) architecture is crucial in managing complex and interconnected systems. However, the description and modeling of SoS architecture pose significant challenges and require a structured and organized approach. In this study, a metamodel for SoS architecture that considers both structural and behavioral perspectives is defined. The metamodel is then mapped to ontologies that are enhanced with a flow-based extension to characterize architecture views. On this basis, an SoS capability ontology (SoSCO) and an SoS operational ontology (SoSOO) are built with factors, relationships, and flows. A four-step architecture process for developing capabilities and a five-step architecture process for operational modeling are provided based on the ontologies. The proposed approach is applied in a search and rescue case study, demonstrating its ability to improve operability in the early design stage. The process is implemented using the Unified Architecture Framework (UAF) so that various stakeholders and engineers can better understand and develop an SoS.

Abstract:An ontology management system (OMS) is a software system which manages ontologies through their lifecycle. It simplifies ontologies building and applications by providing a mechanism for querying ontologies and an easy-to-use programming interface to ontologies and instances. OMSs are powerful tools to create ontologies and extend their applications and scope. This paper explains the basic design principles of an OMS and designs a general framework of OMSs. It devotes to promoting systematically research and development of OMSs.

Abstract:In order to model interdependency among capabilities more accurately in the process of forming the capabilities of System of Systems (SoS), we propose a methodology that combines Unified Architecture Framework (UAF) views and Choquet integral to represent the capabilities and the corresponding interdependencies. A conceptual analysis model was constructed by the simplified extraction of the strategic viewpoint, operational viewpoint and resource viewpoint in UAF, which emphasizes the construction of qualitative interdependencies. Then, the Choquet integral preference model with improved solving method was established to tackle the interdependency by quantifying the individual capability and all the sets of capabilities. At last, a modified aircraft carrier combat SoS as an illustrative example was used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Abstract:The System-of-Systems (SoS) paradigm is widely recognized and has become quite studied since a decade, as it has potentially practical applicability in systems engineering. SoS-organized systems could make efficient use of resources from a variety of domains. In this paper, we are studying one of the typical forms of networked enterprises: the supply chain. We will apply the SoS paradigm to this kind of "so-called" system-of-networked enterprises and we will then explore and analyze the interoperation problem in heterogeneous networked enterprises systems. Focusing on information flows in supply chain, we are proposing an approach for developing a supply chain ontology for networked enterprises interoperability, based on an extension of the ONTO-PDM product ontology.

Abstract:In order to react efficiently to changes in production, resources and their functions must be integrated into plants in accordance with the plug and produce principle. In this context, research on so-called capabilities and skills has shown promise. However, there are currently two incompatible approaches to modeling capabilities and skills. On the one hand, formal descriptions using ontologies have been developed. On the other hand, there are efforts to standardize submodels of the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) for this purpose. In this paper, we present ongoing research to connect these two incompatible modeling approaches. Both models are analyzed to identify comparable as well as dissimilar model elements. Subsequently, we present a concept for a bidirectional mapping between AAS submodels and a capability and skill ontology. For this purpose, two unidirectional, declarative mappings are applied that implement transformations from one modeling approach to the other - and vice versa.

Abstract:This paper describes a preliminary attempt at using semantic Web paradigm, especially the Web Ontology Language (OWL), for functional design knowledge representation during collaborative functional modeling in engineering design. Towards extending our previous work on behavior-driven function-environment-structure (B-FES) modeling with capabilities of knowledge sharing and distributed problem solving, an ontology-based scheme for B-FES modeling, called B-FES/o, is proposed for semantic Web applications. As an illustration, the functional model of an automatic assembly system for manufacturing electronic connectors has used OWL format as its knowledge representation scheme.
