NO oxidation results showed that the 2Mn-2Cu/SAPO had the best NO oxidation activity and the BET surface area decreased as manganese loading increased. XRD results showed that the metal species was well dispersed. NH3-TPD showed that the acid sites have no significant influence on the SCR activity of xMn-2Cu/SAPO. H2-TPR patterns showed good redox capacity for xMn-2Cu/SAPO. UV-vis and H2-TPR showed that the ratio of Mn4+ to Mn3+ increased as manganese loading increased. XPS spectra showed a significant amount of Mn3+ and Mn4+ species on the surface and addition of manganese increased the ratio of Cu2+. The promotion effect of manganese to 2Cu/SAPO comes from the generation of Mn3+ and Mn4+ species. Deduced from the DRIFTS spectra, the Elay-Rideal mechanism was effective on 4Mn-2Cu/SAPO.

Abstract:A series of copper- and manganese-containing ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) were synthesized for the low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3. The results demonstrated that NO conversion can be greatly improved by the addition of Cu or Mn. In addition, Cu and Mn had a synergetic effect and the optimal catalytic performance was obtained over the bimetallic catalyst Cu5Mn5-OMC. N-2 sorption, small-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to confirm the ordered mesoporous structures. Wide-angle XRD results showed that in the bimetallic catalysts some Cu ions were substituted by Mn ions, resulting in lattice contraction by the formation of a solid solution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results indicated that the O-C=O groups and chemisorbed oxygen species increased with the addition of Cu or Mn. Temperature-programmed desorption of CO/CO2 and NH3 (CO/CO2-TPD and NH3-TPD) results verified that the acidity of the catalyst was enhanced by the addition of Cu and Mn and the bimetallic catalyst Cu5Mn5-OMC had the strongest acidity. Temperature-programmed reduction of H-2 (H-2-TPR) results showed that Cu5Mn5-OMC had the strongest oxidizing capacity. Based on the above analysis, a possible synergetic catalytic effect was proposed through the electron transfer between Cu and Mn ions.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of Fe-based catalysts with Zeolite Socony Mobil-5 (ZSM-5) as supports were synthesized using the sol–gel method to obtain the Fe/ZSM-5, Mn-Fe/ZSM-5, Cu-Fe/ZSM-5 and Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts. The synthesized catalysts were examined and characterized via catalytic activity testing, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N 2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscope (SEM), temperature-programmed desorption of NH 3 (NH 3 -TPD), temperature-programmed reduction with H 2 (H 2 -TPR) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The results showed that the Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst had the best catalytic performance compared with the other catalysts. In addition, Fe/ZSM-5 and Cu-Mn-Fe/ZSM-5 all exhibited excellent stability as well as good tolerance to SO 2 & H 2 O under the experimental conditions. Further characterization results showed that with co-doping of Cu and Mn, the amount of Mn 4+ , Cu + , Fe 3+ and surface chemisorbed oxygen (O β ) on the surface of Fe/ZSM-5 increased, promoting the catalytic performance. The DRIFT studies revealed that the NH 3 -SCR reaction followed both the E-R and L-H mechanism on the surface of the Fe-based ZSM-5 catalyst. The Fe-based ZSM-5 catalyst is a good candidate for NH 3 -SCR both in high reactivity and outstanding stability.

Abstract:The effect of Mn impregnation on the NH3-SCR (selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3) activity of in situ synthesized Cu-SSZ-13 was investigated in this work. It was found that Mn addition could efficiently improve the low-temperature activity of Cu-SSZ-13. The optimal amount of Mn was 5 wt.%, and NOx conversion was improved by more than 20% over a temperature range of 120 °C to 150 °C. SEM (scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), N2 adsorption-desorption, H2-TPR (temperature programmed reduction of H2), NH3-TPD (temperature programmed desorption of NH3) and in situ DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy) experiments were conducted to investigate the changes in the zeolite structure, active sites, acid sites and reaction mechanism. The impregnated MnOx species caused a decline in the crystallinity of Cu-SSZ-13 but markedly improved the redox ability. Nitrate and nitrite species were observed in the Mn-modified Cu-SSZ-13, and the formation of these species was thought to cause the observed increase in low-temperature NH3-SCR activity. The results show that the addition of Mn is a promising method for promoting the low-temperature catalytic activity of Cu-SSZ-13.

Abstract:Two different precursors, manganese nitrate (MN) and manganese acetate (MA), were employed to prepare two series of catalysts, i.e., xCuyMn(N)/TiO2 and xCuyMn(A)/TiO2, by a co-impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, LRS, CO-TPR, XPS and EPR spectroscopy. The results suggest that: (1) both xCuyMn(N)/TiO2 and xCuyMn(A)/TiO2 catalysts exhibit much higher catalytic activities than an unmodified Cu/TiO2 catalyst in the NO + CO reaction. Furthermore, the activities of catalysts modified with the same amount of manganese are closely dependent on manganese precursors. (2) The enhancement of activities for Mn-modified catalysts should be attributed to the formation of the surface synergetic oxygen vacancy (SSOV) Cu+-square-Mny+ in the reaction process. Moreover, since the formation of the SSOV (Cu+-square-Mn-3(+)) in the xCuyMn(N)/TiO2 catalyst is easier than that (Cu+-square-Mn2+) in the xCuyMn(A)/TiO2 catalyst, the activity of the xCuyMn(N)/TiO2 catalyst is higher than that of the xCuyMn(A)/TiO2 catalyst. This conclusion is well supported by the XPS and EPR results.
Fe Promotion Effect in Mn/Usy for Low-Temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction of No with Nh3

Abstract:A series of catalysts of Mn/USY and Mn-Fe/USY prepared by impregnation were studied for low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 in the presence of excess of oxygen. It was found that the addition of Fe enhanced the catalytic performance at low-temperature. Mn-Fe/USY catalyst yielded nearly 100% NO conversion in a range of temperature from 423 to 573 K at a space velocity of 36 000 cm(3.)g(-1)h(-1). Coexistence of manganese and iron oxides enhanced the dispersion of the supported oxides, no visible phase of the oxides can be observed on catalyst. The addition of Fe enhanced the number and strength of the Bronsted and Lewis acid sites on the surface of the catalyst, which might promote the absorption of NH3 to form active intermediate and enhance the catalytic performance at low-temperature.

Abstract:The present work explored the effect of MnO(x) modification on the activity and adsorption of CuO/Ce(0.67)Zr(0.33)O(2) catalyst for NO reduction by CO. XRD, Raman, UV, XPS, H(2)-TPR, and in situ FT-IR were used to characterize these catalysts. Results suggested that the incorporation of copper and manganese species resulted in the lattice expansion and the decease of microstrain of ceria-zirconia, thus inducing the formation of oxygen vacancies. There was a strong interaction between surface copper, manganese, and the support via charge transfer. The addition of manganese species could promote the reduction of the resultant catalysts and assist copper oxide in changing the valence and the support in supplying oxygen. These reduction behaviors were dependent on the loading amounts of MnO(x) and the impregnation procedure. In addition, the introduction of MnO(x) cannot change the adsorption type of NO, but readily helped to activate the adsorbed NO species. As a result, these factors were responsible for the enhancement of activity and selectivity through MnO(x) modification.

Abstract:A series of MnCo/Cu-ZSM-5 (MnCo/Cu-Z) catalysts with different Mn/Co ratios for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 were prepared by the combination of ion exchange and impregnation. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were investigated by N2 adsorption/desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and temperature-programmed desorption of NOx (NOx-TPD) and NH3 (NH3-TPD), and the diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) technique was employed for the detection of intermediate species and the study of the mechanism. The introduction of Mn and Co boosts the catalytic activity of the Cu-Z catalyst at a temperature below 200 °C, and the optimum activity was obtained over the Mn1Co2/Cu-Z catalyst. The enrichment of the high-valent metal ion on the catalyst surface and the improvement in the reducibility of metal oxide are responsible for the elevation in the catalytic activity of MnCo/Cu-Z. The bridged and bidentate modes are the prevailing nitrate species on the Cu-Z and MnCo/Z catalysts, respectively, and both of them were detected over the MnCo/Cu-Z catalyst. Furthermore, the DRIFT spectroscopy (DRIFTS) results indicate that, at 150 °C, the bridged nitrate can react with the adsorbed ammonia species, but the bidentate nitrate fails to do. The SCR reaction over the Cu-Z catalyst follows the Eley–Rideal and Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanisms simultaneously at 150 °C, whereas an overwhelming dominance of the Eley–Rideal mechanism is identified for the MnCo/Z catalyst. Abstract:The sulfation showed a dual effect on the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reaction over MnOx/TiO2. The activation of adsorbed NH3 and the adsorption of NO on MnOx/TiO2 were both restrained after the sulfation. Therefore, the SCR reaction through the Eley-Rideal mechanism and that through the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism were both restrained, resulting in an obvious decrease of NO conversion below 300 degrees C. During NO reduction over MnOx/TiO2 at higher temperatures, there was a competition among the SCR reaction, the nonselective catalytic reduction (NSCR) reaction and the catalytic oxidation of NH3 to NO. The NSCR reaction and the catalytic oxidation of NH3 to NO over MnOx/TiO2 at higher temperatures were both restrained after the sulfation, so more NH3 adsorbed on sulfated MnOx/TiO2 was used to reduce NO to N-2. Therefore, the SCR activity and N-2 selectivity of sulfated MnOx/TiO2 at higher temperatures were much higher than those of MnOx/TiO2.

Abstract:MnOx-ZSM-5 catalysts with different MnOx location were synthesized and their catalytic performances are investigated for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR). MZ-150 that MnOx clusters are dispersed on the outside of ZSM-5 exhibits higher catalytic activity at low temperature than MZ-25 of MnOx nanoparticles encapsulated in the channels of the support. The characteristics results show that the excellent redox ability and the dominant Mn3+ species over MZ-150 improve the oxidation of NO to NO2 and the formation of unstable NOx intermediates, enhancing the low-temperature SCR activity. For MZ-25, the confinement effect of ZSM-5 leads to a large NOx adsorption capacity, but the generated NOx species are stable, which could be the important reason for the poor activity at low temperature. This work reveals the relationship between the location of MnOx nanoparticles and the SCR properties, which can provide a new idea for designing the low-temperature zeolite catalysts.

Abstract:A series of CuMnOx catalysts were prepared through the coprecipitation method to explore the effect of CO participation on the NH3- SCR reaction. The results showed that the CM-3 sample reached 100% conversion of CO and NO at a temperature lower than 175 °C; This is mainly because the correct proportion of copper and manganese helps to form solid solution and improve the coordination between metals. Moreover, the interaction principle of CO participating in the NH3-SCR reaction was thoroughly investigated through in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) and density functional theory (DFT). First, NH3 had varying adsorption modes at different temperatures; Second, NH3 and CO competed for the same active center, which significantly affected the catalytic reaction on the sample surface. Further, it was confirmed that the deposition of CO32- is the main reason for the decline in activity. Finally, the improvement in N2 selectivity in the reaction with CO participation was due to the produced N2O not being directly released but being further reduced to N2 through species such as CO.

Abstract:A series of manganese-niobium mixed oxide (Mn–Nb) catalysts were prepared by homogeneous precipitation method and tested for low temperature selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR). These catalysts were characterized by N2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction, H2-TPR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, NOx-TPD and NH3-TPD. Among the series of Mn–Nb catalysts, Mn2Nb1Ox calcined at 500°C exhibited the best catalytic activity. MnOx had stronger redox capability than Mn2Nb1Ox, resulting in lower N2 selectivity due to the unselective oxidation of NH3 at relatively high temperatures. The addition of Nb to MnOx enhanced the acidity, especially the Brønsted acidity, which is responsible for the low temperature SCR activity. The combination of MnOx with strong redox capability and NbOx with high acidity simultaneously led to high NOx conversion and N2 selectivity over the Mn2Nb1Ox catalyst.
Spinel Structured CoaMnbOx Mixed Oxide Catalyst for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx with NH3

Abstract:A highly efficient catalyst of a CoaMnbOx mixed oxide prepared by the co-precipitation method was developed for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with ammonia. With an increase in the Mn content, the catalytic activity of the CoaMnbOx mixed oxide exhibited a volcano-type tendency, and when Co/Mn molar ratio reached 7:3 (Co7Mn3Ox), the operation temperature for achieving > 80% NOx conversion was 170 degrees C (116-285 degrees C window). The formation of spinel structured MnCo2O4 is highly important, and the presence of the spinel structure in Co7Mn3Ox contributes to the increase in active sites and thermal stability and promotes SO2 and/or H2O resistance. In comparison with MnOx or CoOx alone, the CoaMnbOx catalysts possess improved redox properties and more surface acid sites due to synergistic effects between the Co and Mn species. Among the CoaMnbOx catalysts with different Co/Mn molar ratios, a higher NH3 and NO + O-2 adsorption ability was found for the Co7Mn3Ox catalyst, originating from its MnCo2O4.5 phase and higher surface area, which leads to the higher activity of the Co7Mn3Ox, catalyst. In situ DRIFTs indicated that bridging nitrate and bidentate nitrate are the intermediate species in the NH3-SCR reaction, and the high NO adsorption ability and improved redox properties of the Co7Mn3Ox catalyst are beneficial for the formation of nitrate species on the catalyst surface. Furthermore, NH3 species adsorbed at Lewis acid sites taken part in SCR reaction, while the reactivity of NH3 species adsorbed at Bronsted acid was not definitized.

Abstract:The catalytic performance of a series of La-Fe/AC catalysts was studied for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO by CO. With the increase in La content, the Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio and amount of surface oxygen vacancies (SOV) in the catalysts increased; thus the catalytic activity improved. Incorporating the promoters to La3-Fe1/active carbon (AC) catalyst could affect the catalyst activity by changing the electronic structure. The increase in Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio after the promoter addition is possibly due to the extra synergistic interaction of M (Mn and Ce) and Fe through the redox equilibrium of M3+ + Fe3+ ↔ M4+ + Fe2+. This phenomenon could have improved the redox cycle, enhanced the SOV formation, facilitated NO decomposition, and accelerated the CO-SCR process. The presence of O2 enhanced the formation of the C(O) complex and improved the activation of the metal site. Mn@La3-Fe1/AC catalyst revealed an excellent NO conversion of 93.8% at 400 °C in the presence of 10% oxygen. The high catalytic performance of MnOx and double exchange behavior of Mn3+ and Mn4+ can increase the number of SOV and improve the catalytic redox properties.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) was used as support for CuOx and MnOx, and the effects of preparation method on selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 were investigated. The Cu–Mn/OMC prepared by solvent evaporation-induced self-assembly method, named as self-assembly synthesis (S), exhibited higher NO conversion and N2 selectivity than the catalyst prepared by ultrasound-assisted impregnation (I) or mechanical mixing (M). The structural and surface properties of catalysts were characterized by various techniques. XRD and TEM results showed good dispersion of active phases on Cu–Mn/OMC(S). XPS analysis suggested that the surface of Cu–Mn/OMC(S) had the maximum amount of O–C=O groups and chemisorbed O. The strongest acidity and largest amount of oxidative species were further illustrated by NH3-TPD and H2-TPR profiles, which were consistent with the XPS results. Accordingly, these favorable properties may be the main reasons for the outstanding performance of Cu–Mn/OMC(S) in NH3-SCR reaction. Thus, self-assembly synthesis can be considered an effective method for the preparation of OMC–supported catalysts.

Abstract:More attention to manganese oxide-based catalysts has been paid due to their excellent catalytic activities in low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3 (NH3-SCR) in recent years. The progress of low-temperature NH3-SCR on manganese oxide-based catalysts is reviewed in this paper. The effects of oxidation states, bulk and surface structures of manganese oxides together with the nature of the doping cations and the supports on catalytic activities are extensively analyzed, and according to these results, the general conclusions can be drawn that both higher oxidation state of manganese and higher surface areas favor the reaction of NH3-SCR at low temperatures, the doping cations such as Ce4+, Cr3+, Fe3+, Cu2+ and Sn4+ can enhance NOx conversion and/or N-2 selectivity of manganese oxide-based catalysts in low-temperature NH3-SCR, and the supports with excellent features like TiO2 and silicon-aluminum zeolites can facilitate the improvements of hydrophobic ability and sulfur-resistant performance. Meanwhile, the mechanisms of low-temperature NH3-SCR according to activations of NH3 and NO alone or both are systematically discussed, and depending on the reaction conditions, Eley-Rideal and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanisms as well as Mars-van Krevelen one possibly simultaneously occur in low-temperature NH3-SCR reactions over manganese oxide-based catalysts. Finally, the general proposal for developing highly active manganese oxide-based catalysts in low-temperature NH3-SCR is put forward.
