Abstract:A dimeric carbazole‐based fused‐ring (NCz) is synthesized through a metal‐free catalytic intramolecular C–C coupling reaction, and a novel dopant‐free hole transport material (HTM) NCz‐DM based on NCz core unit is further developed, achieving an impressive efficiency of 24.0%. A profitable approach for improving the stability of n‐i‐p planar perovskite solar cell (PSC) is developing dopant‐free hole transport materials (HTMs) with desirable intrinsic charge transport properties. In this work, by adopting a metal‐free catalytic intramolecular C─C coupling reaction, a carbazole dimer‐based fused‐ring is synthesized, and further developed a small molecular dopant‐free HTM abbreviated as NCz‐DM with appropriate energy level, excellent hole transport and film formation properties. Applied in n‐i‐p planar PSC, an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.0% is achieved, together with enhanced humidity, thermal and light stability, which is among the high level of ever‐reported results for PSCs utilizing small molecular dopant‐free HTM.

A Simple Carbazole-Triphenylamine Hole Transport Material for Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:In this work, a simple carbazole-based hole transport material with triphenylamine moieties, termed LD22, has been used in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). It is noted that LD22 exhibits a proper HOMO level of -5.27 eV, high hole mobility of 1.65 X 10(-5) cm(2) V-1 s(-1), and relatively high glass-transition temperature of 132 degrees C. When LD22 was used in PSCs, pristine LD22-based PSCs showed a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.04%. When LD22 is doped, the PCE improves to a promising 17.18%. More importantly, the concentration of LD22 has little influence on the PSC performance regardless of the existence of dopants, which shows good repeatability. As a reference, the device with doped 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N,N-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amino)-9,9'-spiro-bifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) shows a PCE of 17.73%. On the other hand, the laboratory synthesis cost of LD22 is much lower than that of spiro-OMeTAD. Therefore, the results indicate that the simple carbazole-triphenylamine compounds own the potential to be doped-free HTM and LD22 could be a promising HTM candidate for high-performance PSCs due to its simple structure.
A Coplanar Π‐extended Quinoxaline Based Hole‐Transporting Material Enabling over 21 % Efficiency for Dopant‐Free Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:AbstractDeveloping dopant‐free hole transporting materials (HTMs) is of vital importance for addressing the notorious stability issue of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, efficient dopant‐free HTMs are scarce. Herein, we improve the performance of dopant‐free HTMs featuring with a quinoxaline core via rational π‐extension. Upon incorporating rotatable or chemically fixed thienyl substitutes on the pyrazine ring, the resulting molecular HTMs TQ3 and TQ4 show completely different molecular arrangement as well as charge transporting capabilities. Comparing with TQ3, the coplanar π‐extended quinoxaline based TQ4 endows enriched intermolecular interactions and stronger π–π stacking, thus achieving a higher hole mobility of 2.08×10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1. It also shows matched energy levels and high thermal stability for application in PSCs. Planar n‐i‐p structured PSCs employing dopant‐free TQ4 as HTM exhibits power conversion efficiency (PCE) over 21 % with excellent long‐term stability.

Abstract:We demonstrate efficient planar perovskite solar cells using a dopant-free donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated small molecule as a hole transport material. The photovoltaic cell reaches a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.9%, which is comparable to or even better than that of the devices using the traditional doped 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N, N'-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) hole transport material under equivalent conditions. We ascribe the high performance to the excellent charge transporting properties of the D-A conjugated small molecule. Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL), transient photocurrent response, and impedance spectroscopy characterization indicate that this D-A conjugated small molecule plays a key role in hole collection and extraction in perovskite based photovoltaic devices. The dopant-free D-A small molecule hole transport material used here not only improves the efficiency, but also facilitates the fabrication process and thus potentially reduces the fabrication cost of perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:In this paper, two novel D‐π‐D hole‐transporting materials (HTM) are reported, abbreviated as BDT‐PTZ and BDT‐POZ, which consist of 4,8‐di(hexylthio)‐benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT) as π‐conjugated linker, and N‐(6‐bromohexyl) phenothiazine (PTZ)/N‐(6‐bromohexyl) phenoxazine (POZ) as donor units. The above two HTMs are deployed in p‐i‐n perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as dopant‐free HT layers, exhibiting excellent power conversion efficiencies of 18.26% and 19.16%, respectively. Particularly, BDT‐POZ demonstrates a superior fill factor of 81.7%, which is consistent with its more efficient hole extraction and transport verified via steady‐state/transient fluorescence spectra and space‐charge‐limited current technique. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction characterization implies these two molecules present diverse packing tendencies, which may account for various interfacial hole‐transport ability in PSCs.

Abstract:Hole transport materials (HTMs) have a critical impact on the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Especially, the dopant-free HTMs could avoid the usage of hygroscopic dopants and reduce costs, which are important for device stability. Most of the current organic dopant-free HTMs are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-based planar conjugated structures. Yet, the synthesis of conjugated fused heterocycles is often complicated. In this work, intramolecular non-covalent interaction is introduced to construct two organic HTMs (DCT and DTC), which can be facilely obtained through simple reactions. Compared to DTC with hexyl chain on the central benzene ring, DCT with hexyloxy chains shows better planarity in the core structure, as a result of the intramolecular non-covalent interactions between oxygen on hexyloxy and sulfur atom on the adjacent thiophene, as reflected from its single crystal structure. Moreover, DCT in a pristine state shows a decent hole mobility comparable to the doped Spiro-OMeTAD. Ultimately, conventional devices using dopant-free DCT as HTM show a high efficiency of 22.50%, with excellent long-term stability, and light and thermal stability. The results show that the noncovalent interaction is a useful and simple design strategy for dopant-free HTMs, that can effectively improve the efficiency and stability of PSCs.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">Hole-transporting materials (HTMs) are the key component of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) for the role of extracting photogenerated holes, as well as the charge transporting between perovskite layer and metal electrode. Herein, with the aim to enhance the hole mobility by compact molecular packing, the modification of HTMs focuses on the extension of conjugated cores from the commonly used carbazole (Cz) to tetrabenzo[a,c,g,i]carbazole (TBC). Because of the closely cofacial stacking mode of the TBC core with an X-type symmetric structure, the resultant TBC-2,7,11,16-tetra-diphenylamine (TD) can achieve a hole mobility of 6.6 × 10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1 and the corresponding conversion efficiency of 20.52%, higher than that of the analogue Cz-TD (18.34%). </section>

An Acetylene-Linked 9,9′-Bicarbazole-Based Hole-Transporting Material for Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:A new hole-transporting material (XJ-05) based on a 9,9′-bicarbazole core and four acetylene-linked triphenylamine groups was designed and applied for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Optical spectra, thermal stability, electrochemical properties, density functional theory calculations, hydrophobicity, hole mobility, hole transfer dynamics, and surface morphology of XJ-05 were evaluated and discussed. Planar n–i–p PSCs were fabricated using triple cation perovskite Cs0.05(MA0.17FA0.83)0.95Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3 as the light-harvesting layer. The PSCs based on doped XJ-05 achieved a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.08%, which is comparable to that of PSCs based on state-of-the-art hole-transporting material, spiro-OMeTAD (17.55%). Unfortunately, the doped XJ-05-based cells showed inferior stability. Moreover, the dopant-free XJ-05-based devices showed a PCE up to 12.61% and retained 79.9% of their initial PCE under moisture after 260 h, which represent a much better stability than the spiro-OMeTAD-based ones.

Abstract:A simple carbazole-based hole transport material, termed HTM1, has been deposited as thin films. The samples were elaborated via a Physical Vapor Deposition to ensure the production of high-quality thin films. The study of the morphological and photophysical properties of the investigated compound was revealed through Scanning Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, Ultraviolet–Visible, and Photoluminescence spectroscopy. A flat surface with low roughness values was observed in the SEM and AFM images. Moreover, the obtained films revealed a higher absorption in the UV region. Optical parameters such as the energy gap (2.9 eV) and refractive index were determined using transmittance measurements. The temperature-dependent photoluminescence over a range of 77–300 K has also been investigated. It is found that, as the temperature decreases, a new emission band appears, which may be due to the formation of excimers. Added to that, theoretical investigation of the highest occupied molecular orbital, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, the density of states, and the optical energy gap were studied using density functional theory (DFT) with the hybrid B3LYP exchange-correlation function and the 6-311G (d,p) basis set. Absorption spectra was generated using the TD-DFT method. The absorption maximum obtained (398 nm) for HTM1 closely matched with the experimental value (393 nm). Following these characterizations, simulation studies on the photovoltaic performances of the HTM1 for perovskite solar cells have been done. This cell provided a maximum PCE of 21.31%.

Abstract:Three twin-carbazole-based hole-transporting materials (HTMs) bearing an unconjugated flexible linker and four peripheral diphenylamine groups with different methoxy positions (pp-, pm-, and po-) are first synthesized (GJ-pp, GJ-pm, and GJ-po) and successfully employed in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The HTMs were obtained from simple synthetic steps and facile purification techniques. The thermal stability, optical and electrochemical properties, density functional theory calculations, hole-transporting properties, X-ray diffraction, hole transfer dynamics, hydrophobic properties, surface morphology, and photovoltaic performances were measured and discussed. Device performance depends on the methoxy group positions. GJ-pp shows the best power conversion efficiency (17.23%) among the three twin-carbazole-based HTMs, and slightly lower than that of the spiro-OMeTAD-based devices (17.96%). However, the GJ-pp-based devices show outstanding thermal stability compared with the spiro-OMeTAD-based ones. Laboratory synthetic cost of GJ-pp is merely 29.0% of the purchasable spiro-OMeTAD price, and the concentration of GJ-pp is lower than that of spiro-OMeTAD (50.0 vs. 72.3 mg mL−1). The results demonstrate that the twin-carbazole moiety can endow enhanced charge transport properties due to its potential intermolecular interactions, and the conjugated core is unnecessary for promising HTMs.

Abstract:Three dopant-free hole-transporting materials (HTMs) M1−3 containing dithieno[3′,2':3,4;2″,3'':5,6]benzo[1,2-d]imidazole (DTBI) or phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (PTI) were designed, synthesized and applied in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), where DTBI and PTI were first introduced as a core structure in the HTMs. Different steric groups (4-methoxybenzene and 4,4′-dimethoxytriphenylamine) were introduced as the periphery groups connected at carbon-2 (C-2) position of imidazole moiety. Accordingly, the relationship between chemical structure and function was systematically investigated with respect to the fused cores and periphery groups, by the measurements of the energy levels, hole mobility, film-forming morphology, extraction and transfer of photo-generated holes, and photovoltaic performances. It was found that M1−2 with DTBI as a core structure exhibited suitable energy levels, higher hole mobility and uniform film-forming morphology, as well as efficient extraction and transfer of photo-generated holes at the perovskite/HTM interfaces. The PSCs using M2 as dopant-free HTM exhibited an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.9% with a negligible hysteresis, surpassing that of the doped spiro-OMeTAD-based standard device (16.4%) under the same testing conditions. Importantly, the unencapsulated PSCs based on dopant-free M2 presented much higher stability than that of doped spiro-OMeTAD. This work provides a promising strategy to construct dopant-free HTMs with both high efficiency and high stability by using DTBI as a core structure.

Abstract:A new hole transporting material (HTM) named DMZ is synthesized and employed as a dopant-free HTM in inverted planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Systematic studies demonstrate that the thickness of the hole transporting layer can effectively enhance the morphology and crystallinity of the perovskite layer, leading to low series resistance and less defects in the crystal. As a result, the champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.61% with JSC = 22.62 mA cm-2 , VOC = 1.02 V, and FF = 81.05% (an average one is 17.62%) is achieved with a thickness of ≈13 nm of DMZ (2 mg mL-1 ) under standard global AM 1.5 illumination, which is ≈1.5 times higher than that of devices based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS). More importantly, the devices based on DMZ exhibit a much better stability (90% of maximum PCE retained after more than 556 h in air (relative humidity ≈ 45%-50%) without any encapsulation) than that of devices based on PEDOT:PSS (only 36% of initial PCE retained after 77 h in same conditions). Therefore, the cost-effective and facile material named DMZ offers an appealing alternative to PEDOT:PSS or polytriarylamine for highly efficient and stable inverted planar PSCs.

Abstract:Two structural isomers of carbazole decorated with triarylamine have been designed and synthesized with a facile synthetic procedure. The impact of triarylamine substitution on the isomeric structural linkage of carbazole on the optical, thermal, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties has been extensively studied by combining experimental and simulation methods. Car[2,3] showed a red shift in the absorption maximum compared to that of Car[1,3], indicating the linear conjugation along the 2,7-position of carbazole in the former. The high thermal decomposition temperature (>420 °C) of these compounds could be attributed to the rigid structure of the carbazole core. Perovskite solar cells fabricated with Car[2,3] as the hole transporting material (HTM) displayed the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.23%. It can be attributed to the suitable energy alignment of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of HTM with the adjacent perovskite valence band energy level, which results in efficient hole transport. Furthermore, the molecular dynamic simulation demonstrates that the triphenylamine substitution on the 2,3,6,7 positions of Car[2,3] results in a more planar molecular alignment on top of the perovskite surface, promoting an efficient hole extraction. Abstract:Two dopant-free hole transporting materials (HTMs) comprising a planar indacenodithiophene (IDT) core with different alkyl chains (either C-4 or C-6) and electron-rich methoxytriphenylamine (TPA) side arms were synthesized (namely IDTC4-TPA and IDTC6-TPA, respectively) and successfully employed in CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cells. These HTMs can be obtained from relatively cheap starting materials by adopting a facile preparation procedure that does not use expensive and complicated purification techniques. In the crystal lattice, each of these molecules interacted with either the CH/pi or CH/O hydrogen bonds. At the same time, the IDTC6 backbone enables a tight molecular arrangement based on pi-pi stacking interactions (3.399 angstrom); this causes the new material to have a higher hole mobility than the standard IDTC4-based HTM. Moreover, the photoluminescence quenching in a perovskite/HTM film structure was shown to be more effective at the perovskite/IDTC6-TPA interface than at the perovskite/IDTC4-TPA interface. Consequently, devices fabricated using IDTC6-TPA show superior photovoltaic properties (exhibiting an optimal performance of 15.43%) compared with IDTC4-TPA-containing devices.

Abstract:As the most commonly used hole transport material (HTM) in tin–lead (Sn–Pb) perovskite solar cells (PSCs), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) limits the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of the PSCs due to its acidic characteristics. Herein, an easily synthesized polymer HTM poly[(phenyl)imino[9-(2-ethylhexyl)carbazole]-2,7-diyl] (CzAn) with a shallow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level of −4.95 eV is used in a p-i-n structure, methylammonium-free, Sn–Pb PSC to replace PEDOT:PSS. Upon optimization using doping and surface engineering, high quality Sn–Pb PSCs could be successfully fabricated, boosting the PCE to 22.6% (stabilized PCE of 21.3%) compared with 21.2% for PEDOT:PSS. The perovskite films prepared on the modified CzAn HTM possess improved crystallinity, reduced trap-state density, and larger carrier mobility resulting in PSCs with greatly improved stability.

Abstract:Hole transport materials (HTMs) play a pivotal role in the hole extraction and transportation processes in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Although a great number of HTMs based on various planar conjugated cores have been explored, the development of branches is rather limited. In this work, branches of 9-phenyl-9H-carbazole derivatives have been incorporated in different N-alkylated dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrol (DTP) core to construct HTMs (TM-9 to TM-14). Among them, TM-13 with 9-(4-methoxyphenyl)-9H-carbazole branch exhibites excel-lent performance in hole extraction and transportation ability. Consequently, the PSCs based on TM-13 have achieved the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.44%, which is comparable to the PCE of 20.62% with the widely used Spiro-OMeTAD HTM. More importantly, the synthetic cost of TM-13 (62 $/g) is much lower than that of Spiro-OMeTAD (400 $/g), suggesting its promising commercialization for low-cost and efficient HTMs for PSCs.

Abstract:Dopant‐free hole transport materials (HTMs) are essential for commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of the state‐of‐the‐art PSCs with small molecule dopant‐free HTMs are below 20%. Herein, a simple dithieno[3,2‐b:2′,3′‐d]pyrrol‐cored small molecule, DTP‐C6Th, is reported as a promising dopant‐free HTM. Compared with commonly used spiro‐OMeTAD, DTP‐C6Th exhibits a similar energy level, a better hole mobility of 4.18 × 10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1, and more efficient hole extraction, enabling efficient and stable PSCs with a dopant‐free HTM. With the addition of an ultrathin poly(methyl methacrylate) passivation layer and properly tuning the composition of the perovskite absorber layer, a champion PCE of 21.04% is achieved, which is the highest value for small molecule dopant‐free HTM based PSCs to date. Additionally, PSCs using the DTP‐C6Th HTM exhibit significantly improved long‐term stability compared with the conventional cells with the metal additive doped spiro‐OMeTAD HTM. Therefore, this work provides a new candidate and effective device engineering strategy for achieving high PCEs with dopant‐free HTMs.

Abstract:Significant efforts have been devoted to developing new dopant-free hole transporting materials (HTMs) for perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). Fluoranthene is one typical cyclopentene-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with a rigid planarized structure, and thus could be an ideal building block to construct dopant-free HTMs, which have not been reported yet. Here, we report a new and simple synthetic method to prepare unreported 2,3-dicyano-fluoranthene through a Diels-Alder reaction between dibenzofulvene and tetracyanoethylene, and demonstrate that it can serve as an efficient electron-withdrawing unit for constructing donor-acceptor (D-A) type HTMs. This novel building block not only endows the resulting molecules with suitable energy levels, but also enables highly ordered and strong molecular packing in solid states, both of which could facilitate hole extraction and transport. Thus with dopant-free HTMs, impressive efficiencies of 18.03% and 17.01% which are associated with enhanced stability can be achieved based on conventional n-i-p and inverted p-i-n PVSCs respectively, outperforming most organic dopant-free HTMs reported so far.
