Abstract:In this work, a simple carbazole-based hole transport material with triphenylamine moieties, termed LD22, has been used in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). It is noted that LD22 exhibits a proper HOMO level of -5.27 eV, high hole mobility of 1.65 X 10(-5) cm(2) V-1 s(-1), and relatively high glass-transition temperature of 132 degrees C. When LD22 was used in PSCs, pristine LD22-based PSCs showed a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.04%. When LD22 is doped, the PCE improves to a promising 17.18%. More importantly, the concentration of LD22 has little influence on the PSC performance regardless of the existence of dopants, which shows good repeatability. As a reference, the device with doped 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N,N-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)amino)-9,9'-spiro-bifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) shows a PCE of 17.73%. On the other hand, the laboratory synthesis cost of LD22 is much lower than that of spiro-OMeTAD. Therefore, the results indicate that the simple carbazole-triphenylamine compounds own the potential to be doped-free HTM and LD22 could be a promising HTM candidate for high-performance PSCs due to its simple structure.

Abstract:D-A-D typed hole transport materials have been designed and synthesized with benzothiadiazole acceptor unit by introducing electron-withdrawing group fluorine atoms and electron-donating group alkoxy as side group. It is found that the three hole transport materials have a low-lying HOMO energy level and higher hole mobility. Furthermore, when these materials are applied in perovskite solar cell, the higher hole mobility (1.02 x 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1)) make the B3, which the fluorine atoms on core acceptor without dopants, get a power conversion efficiency of 12.1%, while spiro-OMeTAD based dopant-free perovskite solar cell only shows a 7.96% efficiency. In addition, the long-term stability of the perovskite solar cells based all the three hole transport materials improved greatly, especially B1-based cells show a favorable long-term stability, which keeps a 90% initial efficiency after 10 days at a relative humidity of 30%. Therefore, the D-A-D typed hole transport materials have a good application prospects in the field of perovskite solar cells with the incorporation of appropriate side group.

Abstract:Hole transport materials (HTMs) play an important role in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and the regulation of their molecular structures can promote the further development of power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability. In this work, through exploiting the expansion strategy at the molecular level, a new linear HTM, named H580, was designed and synthesized by expanding the carbazole connecting unit. The results show that the introduction of dibenzol structure can significantly improve the photophysical and electrochemical characteristics of the molecule while preserving the passivating effect of the cyano group. The results show that a higher efficiency and a better stability are obtained after using H580 as the HTM. Significantly, compared with using spiro-OMeTAD alone, the additional introduction of H580 as an interface material with hole transport capability and defect passivation effect has achieved an excellent performance of PSCs.

Abstract:A dimeric carbazole‐based fused‐ring (NCz) is synthesized through a metal‐free catalytic intramolecular C–C coupling reaction, and a novel dopant‐free hole transport material (HTM) NCz‐DM based on NCz core unit is further developed, achieving an impressive efficiency of 24.0%. A profitable approach for improving the stability of n‐i‐p planar perovskite solar cell (PSC) is developing dopant‐free hole transport materials (HTMs) with desirable intrinsic charge transport properties. In this work, by adopting a metal‐free catalytic intramolecular C─C coupling reaction, a carbazole dimer‐based fused‐ring is synthesized, and further developed a small molecular dopant‐free HTM abbreviated as NCz‐DM with appropriate energy level, excellent hole transport and film formation properties. Applied in n‐i‐p planar PSC, an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.0% is achieved, together with enhanced humidity, thermal and light stability, which is among the high level of ever‐reported results for PSCs utilizing small molecular dopant‐free HTM.

Abstract:Thirteen carbazole derivatives underwent density functional theory (DFT) analysis with diverse substituents. Donor groups reduced highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy, while acceptor groups increased it, aligning with perovskite valence bands. High light‐harvesting efficiency (LHE) and prolonged lifetimes indicate effective p‐type characteristics, except for 3,6‐ and 2,7‐dithiophenyl carbazoles, which display n‐type behavior. The study explores carbazole‐based organic molecules as transport layers in durable perovskite solar cells, focusing on their optoelectronic and charge transfer properties. Thirteen carbazole derivatives are systematically analyzed via density functional theory (DFT) calculations to understand their structure and optoelectronic characteristics. Substituents like bromo, phenyl, thiophenyl, and pyridyl at positions 3,6‐ and 2,7‐ of carbazole were studied. Phenyl and thiophenyl substitutions lowered highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels, while bromo and pyridyl increased them, tuning HOMO energies from −5.45 to −6.03 eV. These energies align well with perovskite materials valence bands, with absorbance primarily below 400 nm, complementing perovskite absorption. The compounds showed high light‐harvesting efficiencies (LHEs) (0.22 to 0.94) and improved radiative lifetimes. Theoretical investigations identified most compounds as effective p‐type hole‐transport materials (HTM), except 3,6‐ and 2,7‐dithiophenyl carbazoles, which exhibited n‐type behavior due to low hole reorganization energies. Overall, the study highlights computational design's role in developing carbazole derivatives as promising charge carrier precursors for perovskite solar cells.

Benzothiadiazole-based Hole Transport Materials for High-Efficiency Dopant-Free Perovskite Solar Cells: Molecular Planarity Effect

Abstract:A new benzothiadiazole-based D-A-D hole transport material (DTBT) has been designed and synthesized with a more planar structure by introducing of thiophene bridges. The results indicate a lower band gap and quite higher hole mobility for the DTBT. Furthermore, the enhancement in molecular planarity with simple thiophene unit increases the hole mobility of DTBT (8.77 x10(-4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1)) by about 40%. And when DTBT is used as hole transport material in perovskite solar cells, the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the corresponding dopant-free devices is also significantly improved compared with that of the conventional BT model molecule without thiophene. In terms of device stability, DTBT-based devices show a favorable long-term stability, which keep 83% initial efficiency after 15 days. Therefore, the introducing of thiophene bridges in D-A-D typed HTMs can improve the molecular planarity effectively, thereby increasing the hole mobility and improving device performance. Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">Hole-transporting materials (HTMs) are the key component of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) for the role of extracting photogenerated holes, as well as the charge transporting between perovskite layer and metal electrode. Herein, with the aim to enhance the hole mobility by compact molecular packing, the modification of HTMs focuses on the extension of conjugated cores from the commonly used carbazole (Cz) to tetrabenzo[a,c,g,i]carbazole (TBC). Because of the closely cofacial stacking mode of the TBC core with an X-type symmetric structure, the resultant TBC-2,7,11,16-tetra-diphenylamine (TD) can achieve a hole mobility of 6.6 × 10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1 and the corresponding conversion efficiency of 20.52%, higher than that of the analogue Cz-TD (18.34%). </section>

Abstract:Carbazole-based molecules play a significant role in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) due to their advantageous properties. Carbazole derivatives are known for their thermal stability, high hole-transport capability, electron-rich (p-type) characteristics, elevated photoconductivity, excellent chemical stability, and commercial availability. This review focuses on DSSCs, including their structures, working principles, device characterization, and the photovoltaic performance of carbazole-based derivatives. Specifically, it covers compounds such as 2,7-carbazole and indolo[3,2-b]carbazole, which are combined with various acceptors like benzothiadiazole, thiazolothiazole, diketopyrrolopyrrole, and quinoxaline, as reported over the past decade. The review will also outline the relationship between molecular structure and power-conversion efficiencies. Its goal is to summarize recent research and advancements in carbazole-based dyes featuring a D-π-A architecture for DSSCs. Additionally, this review addresses the evolution of carbazole-based hole-transport materials (HTMs), which present a promising alternative to the costly spiro-OMeTAD. We explore the development of novel HTMs that leverage the unique properties of carbazole derivatives to enhance charge transport, stability, and overall device performance. By examining recent innovations and emerging trends in carbazole-based HTMs, we provide insights into their potential to reduce costs and improve the efficiency of DSSCs.

Abstract:We demonstrate efficient planar perovskite solar cells using a dopant-free donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated small molecule as a hole transport material. The photovoltaic cell reaches a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.9%, which is comparable to or even better than that of the devices using the traditional doped 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N, N'-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) hole transport material under equivalent conditions. We ascribe the high performance to the excellent charge transporting properties of the D-A conjugated small molecule. Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL), transient photocurrent response, and impedance spectroscopy characterization indicate that this D-A conjugated small molecule plays a key role in hole collection and extraction in perovskite based photovoltaic devices. The dopant-free D-A small molecule hole transport material used here not only improves the efficiency, but also facilitates the fabrication process and thus potentially reduces the fabrication cost of perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Solar cells constructed with organic–inorganic metal halide perovskite is a hot topic as they can replace the existing traditional silicon-based solar cells. The major hurdle in the commercialization of perovskite solar cells is the efficiency of the device. In this context, the use of a suitable organic hole transporting material would improve the efficiency of the perovskite solar cells. Until now, spiro-OMeTAD (2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis[N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9′-spirobifluorene) is the standard hole transporting material (HTM) used in the fabrication of perovskite solar cells, and the major issue associated with spiro-OMeTAD is the complex multistep synthesis and the observed difficulty in the purification steps which make this HTM as cost-ineffective. Nowadays, certain hole transporting materials made up of organic small molecules carrying motifs like thiophene, triphenylamine, triazatruxane, pyrene, and carbazole exhibited better photovoltaic properties and less costs are involved for their synthesis, which motivate the researchers to work further on the design and development of non-spiro-OMeTAD. Among the various organic small molecule based HTMs, carbazole unit based HTMs exhibited better photovoltaic properties, chemical stability, easy functionalization, and device performance. Thus, the present review mainly focused on the diverse carbazole-based hole transporting molecular designs and their synthetic strategies which have been reported during the past eight years. Also, the review tries to correlate the molecular structure of different carbazole-based HTMs and their observed energy band gap, HOMO–LUMO levels, hole mobilities, and power conversion efficiencies for the fabricated perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:In this paper, two novel D‐π‐D hole‐transporting materials (HTM) are reported, abbreviated as BDT‐PTZ and BDT‐POZ, which consist of 4,8‐di(hexylthio)‐benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT) as π‐conjugated linker, and N‐(6‐bromohexyl) phenothiazine (PTZ)/N‐(6‐bromohexyl) phenoxazine (POZ) as donor units. The above two HTMs are deployed in p‐i‐n perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as dopant‐free HT layers, exhibiting excellent power conversion efficiencies of 18.26% and 19.16%, respectively. Particularly, BDT‐POZ demonstrates a superior fill factor of 81.7%, which is consistent with its more efficient hole extraction and transport verified via steady‐state/transient fluorescence spectra and space‐charge‐limited current technique. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction characterization implies these two molecules present diverse packing tendencies, which may account for various interfacial hole‐transport ability in PSCs.

Abstract:Two structural isomers of carbazole decorated with triarylamine have been designed and synthesized with a facile synthetic procedure. The impact of triarylamine substitution on the isomeric structural linkage of carbazole on the optical, thermal, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties has been extensively studied by combining experimental and simulation methods. Car[2,3] showed a red shift in the absorption maximum compared to that of Car[1,3], indicating the linear conjugation along the 2,7-position of carbazole in the former. The high thermal decomposition temperature (>420 °C) of these compounds could be attributed to the rigid structure of the carbazole core. Perovskite solar cells fabricated with Car[2,3] as the hole transporting material (HTM) displayed the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.23%. It can be attributed to the suitable energy alignment of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of HTM with the adjacent perovskite valence band energy level, which results in efficient hole transport. Furthermore, the molecular dynamic simulation demonstrates that the triphenylamine substitution on the 2,3,6,7 positions of Car[2,3] results in a more planar molecular alignment on top of the perovskite surface, promoting an efficient hole extraction.
