Abstract:Transfer hydrogenation of alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehyde is an important reaction (MPV reaction) for the synthesis of allyl alcohol because of its high selectivity for the hydrogenation of the carbonyl group. This reaction can proceed over many oxide catalysts but the role of acidic and basic sites on the oxide catalyst surface has remained an issue of debate. We report herein the catalytic data of serial Al2O3 and SiO2-Al2O3 catalysts for the MPV reaction of cinnamaldehyde at 150 degrees C using 2-propanol as the H-donor. The surface acidity of the catalysts is adjusted by changing the calcination temperature between 400 and 1000 degrees C and quantified to correlate with the catalyst performance. Surface Lewis acidic sites that are poisoned by pyridine but not by hindered pyridine (lutidine) under catalyst working conditions are identified as the catalytic sites for the MPV reaction. Lutidine-sensitive surface Bronsted acidic sites, which are among the spectator sites during the MPV reaction, are shown to serve as the catalytic sites for cascade cross-etherification reaction between cinnamyl alcohol and 2-propanol. The MPV reaction is also conducted under high-pressure CO2, the results of which exclude possible involvement of surface basic sites during the reaction.
Selectivity of Gold Catalysts for Selective Hydrogenation of Cinnamaldehyde

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), SiO2 and TiO2 supported AuNPs prepared by colloid deposition method and Au/TiO2 prepared by deposition-precipitation method (Au/TiO2-DP) were used for the liquid-phase selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde. The catalysts were characterized by HRTEM, H-2-TPR and XPS. Results showed that AuNPs, AuNPs/SiO2 and AuNPs/TiO2 in dried form selectively hydrogenated the C=C bond, whereas AuNPs/TiO2 treated in H-2 and Au/TiO2-DP preferentially hydrogenated the conjugated C=O bond. From our data, high selectivity toward cinnamyl acohol could be mainly attributed to an electron transfer from the reduced support to gold, which creates more electron-enriched gold particles, favouring C=O hydrogenation.

Abstract:Allylic alcohols typically produced through selective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes are important intermediates in fine chemical industry, but it is still a challenge to achieve its high selectivity transformation. Herein, we report a series of TiO2-supported CoRe bimetallic catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) using formic acid (FA) as a hydrogen donor. The resultant catalyst with the optimized Co/Re ratio of 1:1 can achieve an exceptional COL selectivity of 89% with a CAL conversion of 99% under mild conditions of 140 °C for 4 h, and the catalyst can be reused four times without loss of activity. Meanwhile, the Co1Re1/TiO2/FA system was efficient for the selective hydrogenation of various α,β-unsaturated aldehydes to the corresponding α,β-unsaturated alcohols. The presence of ReOx on the Co1Re1/TiO2 catalyst surface was advantageous to the adsorption of C=O, and the ultrafine Co nanoparticles provided abundant hydrogenation active sites for the selective hydrogenation. Moreover, FA as a hydrogen donor improved the selectivity to α,β-unsaturated alcohols.

Abstract:A series of silica supported nickel catalysts were prepared from nickel nitrate and tetraethyl orthosilicate by the sol-gel method with the imidazolium type ionic liquids as solvents. The catalysts were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Their catalytic performances for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde to hydrocinnamaldehyde were investigated. The results show that the Ni/SiO2 catalyst prepared with 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylimidazole tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid as solvent exhibits the highest catalytic activity for the reaction. Under the optimal conditions of catalyst dosage (based on the mass of cinnamaldehyde used) 10%, reaction pressure 2 MPa, temperature 373 K and reaction time 2 h, the conversion of cinnamaldehyde and the selectivity to hydrocinnamaldehyde can reach 97.6% and 98.8%, respectively.

Abstract:alpha,beta-Unsaturated alcohols are a group of important chemicals and have frequently been synthesized by catalytic hydrogenation method due to its low cost and environmental friendly nature. However, the synthesis of high reactivity and selectivity catalyst that Visible light favors C=O hydrogenation is very challenging. Many references have reported the results of selective hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde to crotonyl alcohol, which either have high conversion and low selectivity or high selectivity and low conversion. Herein, Au-supported ZnAl-layered double hydroxides (Au/ZnAl-LDHs) were synthesized and used on the hydrogenation reaction of crotonaldehyde (CDE) to crotonyl alcohol (COL) under the moderate reaction conditions supplied with light irradiation. The experimental results indicated that the reactivity of CDE hydrogenation and selectivity of COL both have been greatly improved under visible light irradiation, from 42% to 99% for conversion of CDE, from 59.5% to 96% for COL selectivity, of COL both have been greatly improved under visible light irradiation, from 42% to 99% for conversion of CDE, from 59.5% to 96% for COL selectivity, and from 101 to 272 h(-1) for TOF, compared with no irradiation. On the basis of the proposed kinetics equation, it can be concluded that irradiation can not only remarkably increase the reaction rate of selective hydrogenation of CDE to COL but also obviously decrease the activation energy of the reaction system. The enhancement of photocatalytic property of is exactly due to the support of Au, which can be proved by the dependence of the catalytic performance on the wavelength range of light as well as the UV-vis result. In addition, the possible CDE catalytic reaction mechanism was concluded based on the calculation of surface adsorption and hydrogenation reaction path using the DFT method, which is well explained and supports the experimental results.

Controlling Hydrogenation of CO and CC Bonds in Cinnamaldehyde Using Silica Supported Co-Pt and Cu-Pt Bimetallic Catalysts

Abstract:Liquid phase hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde was evaluated over SiO2 supported Co-Pt and Cu-Pt bimetallic and Co, Cu, Pt monometallic catalysts in a batch reactor. H2-temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) was utilized to characterize the reduction behavior and pulse CO chemisorption measurement was performed to characterize the number of active sites of the catalysts. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis was used to characterize metallic particle size distribution and extended X-ray absorption structure (EXAFS) measurements were performed to verify the bimetallic bond formation. The reactor evaluation results show that Co-Pt and Cu-Pt bimetallic catalysts exhibit much higher hydrogenation activity than the corresponding monometallic catalysts, and Co-Pt shows much higher selectivity toward CO bond hydrogenation than Cu-Pt. The trend of hydrogenation activity and selectivity is consistent with previous studies of the hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehydes on model bimetallic surfaces.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) is very important, but still remains challenging due to the coexistence of easily hydrogenated C=C and C=O bonds in CAL molecule. In this work, we report that employing partially oxidized SiC (SiC-O) as the support of Pt can evidently enhance the catalytic selectivity for the selective hydrogenation of C=O in CAL. Further investigations show that the partially oxidized SiC surface can change the adsorption mode of CAL and facilitate the selective adsorption of C=O in CAL. During the catalytic process, H 2 was dissociated on Pt particles while CAL was mainly adsorbed and activated on the surface of support. The active H species generated on the Pt surface then spilled over to the support surface and reacted with the C=O bond activated by the support surface to selectively form cinnamylalcohol. The present work revealed an important cooperative catalysis of metal and SiC, which would be helpful to design and application of more SiC-based catalysts.

Abstract:For the supported catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of a, 6 - unsaturated aldehyde with H2, tailoring of metal - support interfacial effect to improve reaction performance is a significant but challenging subject. In this work, we regulated both the size regimes of the Ir deposits (single atom, nanocluster and nanoparticle) and the crystal plane of anatase TiO2 (TiO2(1 0 1), TiO2(1 0 0) and TiO2(0 0 1)) so as to alter the Ir-TiOx interfacial properties, in order to unravel reaction mechanism of selective hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde over the Ir/TiO2 catalysts. Both the activity and selectivity to crotyl alcohol increased as the Ir size grew from single atom to nanoparticle, ascribed to high Ir0 content, high concentration of surface defects and prominent H-spillover effect on the Ir nanoparticles. Moreover, the in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that an end-on C=O adsorption mode for crotonaldehyde molecule was favored at the Ir-TiOx interface particularly at high H coverage, which thus facilitated the hydrogenation of C=O bond to form crotyl alcohol. Moreover, the highest reactivity of the Ir nanoparticles was evidenced by the lowest reaction barrier. These results explicitly demonstrate that larger metal nanoparticles and adsorption geometry of the reactant at the metal - support interface are vital for improved catalytic performance, which would shed light on the ingenious catalyst design.

Abstract:The semi-hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes to the desired unsaturated alcohols with both high conversion and high selectivity remains a big challenge. Herein, we designed a sandwich-structured nanocatalyst for the highly selective hydrogenation of various α,β-unsaturated aldehydes (e.g., cinnamaldehyde, furfural, crotonaldehyde, and 3-methyl-2-butenal) to the targeted unsaturated alcohols. Highly accessible platinum nanoparticles were sandwiched between a metal-organic framework (MOF) core (i.e., MIL-88B(Fe)) and a MOF shell (i.e., Al-TCPP). In particular, the growth of the Al-TCPP shell was achieved by atomic layer deposition (ALD) of thin-film Al2O3 followed by phase transformation with a tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (H4TCPP) linker. The thickness of the Al-TCPP shell can be finely controlled by adjusting the cycle number of alumina ALD and the concentration of the H4TCPP linker during the phase transformation of Al2O3 to Al-TCPP. It was proven that the permeable MOF shells could serve as selectivity regulators for the activation of the CO bonds in α,β-unsaturated aldehydes (in preference to the CC bonds), leading to higher selectivity towards unsaturated alcohols as compared to the conventional surface supported Pt catalysts. Mechanistic insights showed that the enhanced catalytic performance was attributed to (i) the modified electronic state of sandwiched Pt nanoparticles by the two MOF layers and (ii) the steric hindrance effect on substrate diffusion through the sandwich-structured catalysts.

Abstract:The La-doped Co-B/SiO2 amorphous catalyst (Co-La-B/SiO2) was prepared by chemical reduction of mixed Co2+ and La3+ ions deposited on a silica support with KBH4 aqueous solution at room temperature. The catalyst was employed in the liquid phase hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CMA) to cinnamyl alcohol (CMO). At suitable content, the La-additives exhibited promoting effects on both the activity and the selectivity to CMO. The optimum La-content (χLa) was determined as 0.014 (molar fraction), over which the CMO yield could reach 80%. Based on various characterizations, the promoting effect of the La-dopant on the selectivity to CMO was mainly attributed to the presence of La2+ and La3+. These La-species were favorable for both the activation of the CO bond and the formation of H− species and thus, promoted the hydrogenation of CO bond. These roles also promoted the hydrogenation activity. Besides, the promoting effect of the La-dopant might also attributed to the presence of the La oxides which increased the surface Co active sites. At high χLa, the activity decreased again due to the coverage of the Co active sites by the inactive La-additives and also due to the too strong adsorption of carbonyl group induced by La3+ and La2+. Such strong adsorption might hinder the competitive adsorption of hydrogen.
Aqueous phase selective C O hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde over bimetallic RuCo catalysts with electronic and geometric modification

Abstract:Aqueous phase selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CALD), as a representative α,β-unsaturated aldehyde, into cinnamyl alcohol (CALA) has been investigated over monometallic Ru and bimetallic RuCo catalysts on pristine h-BN support. Using water as the solvent, the optimal 0.5%Ru-1.1%Co/h-BN catalyst exhibits 510 h −1 specific reaction rate and 78.9 % CALA selectivity as well as good recycling stability at 100 °C. Based on the structure characterizations of catalysts, metal nanoparticles consisting of metallic Ru 0 and partially oxidized Ru δ+ sites are uniformly dispersed on h-BN thin sheets. In comparison to monometallic catalysts, additive Co metals in bimetallic RuCo/h-BN catalysts play significant geometric and electronic modification roles on Ru active sites depending on the Ru/Co ratio, and therefore remarkably enhances the preferential activation of CALD C O bond and selectivity of CALA product as well as accelerates the catalytic reaction. Furthermore, the hydrogen dissociative activation ability of various Ru and RuCo catalysts was evaluated, while the superior catalytic performance in water than other commonly used solvents was also clarified and discussed.

Abstract:Chemoselective hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehyde to unsaturated alcohol has attracted growing interests in recent years due to its widespread applications in fine chemicals. However, the hydrogenation of the C=O bond was thermodynamically and kinetically unfavorable over the hydrogenation of the C=C bond. Thus, to obtain the unsaturated alcohol from the unsaturated aldehyde is very difficult in most of the catalytic systems. In this work, ZnAl-hydrotalcite-supported cysteine-capped Au25 nanoclusters were used as the precatalysts for chemoselective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde to cinnamyl alcohol. The catalyst showed stable high selectivity (~ 95%) at prolonged reaction time and complete conversion of the substrate. According to the results of the control experiments, the in-situ DRIFTS of the substrate under high pressure of hydrogen and the 27Al MAS-NMR spectroscopy, we proposed that the difference of the preferential adsorption of the C=O bond to that of the C=C bond was derived from the nature of the support of the gold catalysts.The Au25/ZnAl-300 catalyst displayed a stable high selectivity to cinnamyl alcohol from the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde, which was attributed to the easier adsorption and activation of the C=O bond than that of the C=C bond.

Abstract:Understanding the nature of adsorbates and intermediates on catalytic surfaces is critical for the development of highly efficient systems for CO2 conversion. However, the role of structural hydroxyl groups in CO2 hydrogenation is still under debate. This paper describes an experimental study on the nature of surface-bound hydroxyl groups over Al2O3-supported Cu catalysts for CO2 reduction. A model 5 wt % Cu/Al2O3 catalyst with stable hydroxyl groups was prepared. The structural hydroxyl groups were modulated by the hydration of unsaturated Al3+ sites, which were introduced by the evaporation-induced self-assembly method. Terminal hydroxyl groups (T-OH*) were found to significantly facilitate the conversion of CO2, while the AlVI-T-OH and AlIV-T-OH species promoted the formation of Al-b-HCOO and Al-m-HCOO species, respectively, accompanied with the increase in methanol and dimethyl ether yields. The reaction behavior of hydroxyl species was further investigated by in situ IR experiments with HD isotope exchange on Cu/Al2O3. T-OH* were identified as active sites participating in the formation of key intermediates, while more hydroxyl sites were occupied by formate species with the H coadsorbed on the Cu surfaces.

Abstract:A variety of spherical and structured activated charcoal supported Pt/Fe3O4 composites with an average particle size of ∼100 nm have been synthesized by a self-assembly method using the difference of reduction potential between Pt (IV) and Fe (II) precursors as driving force. The formed Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) effectively prevent the aggregation of Pt nanocrystallites and promote the dispersion of Pt NPs on the surface of catalyst, which will be favorable for the exposure of Pt active sites for high-efficient adsorption and contact of substrate and hydrogen donor. The electron-enrichment state of Pt NPs donated by Fe3O4 nanocrystallites is corroborated by XPS measurement, which is responsible for promoting and activating the terminal C=O bond of adsorbed substrate via a vertical configuration. The experimental results show that the activated charcoal supported Pt/Fe3O4 catalyst exhibits 94.8% selectivity towards cinnamyl alcohol by the transfer hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde with Pt loading of 2.46% under the optimum conditions of 120 °C for 6 h, and 2-propanol as a hydrogen donor. Additionally, the present study demonstrates that a high-efficient and recyclable catalyst can be rapidly separated from the mixture due to its natural magnetism upon the application of magnetic field.
Electronic Metal−Support Interaction Strengthened Pt/CoAl‐LDHs Catalyst for Selective Cinnamaldehyde Hydrogenation

Abstract:Cinnamaldehyde (CAL) is a typical sustainable biomass molecule which is classified as α,β‐unsaturated aldehyde. Selective hydrogenation of CAL to produce high‐value and fine chemical cinnamylalcohol (COL) is an attractive catalytic transformation process. However, the hydrogenation of C=O bond in CAL is more unfavorable than C=C bond in thermodynamics and kinetics, leading to great challenge on achieving high yield of unsaturated alcohol. In this work, a Pt/CoAl‐LDHs catalyst was prepared for hydrogenation of CAL, showing outstanding intrinsic activity (TOF as high as 4.93s‐1) and finally achieving 93.6% selectivity at 95.4% conversion. In contrast, the yields of COL over Pt/Co(OH)2 and Pt/Al(OH)3 were 73% and 34%. Raman, O‐XAFS, XPS characterizations revealed that the Co2+‐O2‐ ‐Al3+ structure in CoAl‐LDHs contributed to strengthened metal‐support interactions, and resulted in electron‐rich and geometric decoration Pt δ− sites. The electron‐rich Ptδ− provided preferable H2 activation capability, and also exposed abundant unsaturated sites which optimized the adsorption mode of CAL favorable for C=O hydrogenation. However, in Pt/Co(OH)2 and Pt/Al(OH)3 catalysts, the Pt0 without electron‐rich and unsaturated property cannot improve the H2 activation capability as well as electronic repellency to C=C bond. In addition, a possible catalytic mechanism was proposed to illustrate the role of Ptδ−‐Co2+‐O2‐‐Al3+ interfacial structure on enhancing activity and selectivity.

Abstract:Herein, we propose a facile strategy to synthesize oxygen-defect-rich Co 3 O 4 @NC porous nanorods derived by in situ pyrolysis of Co-MOF@N, which proves to be frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs). The oxygen-defect-rich Co 3 O 4 @NC with FLPs sites (unliganded Co...N) gives 93.4 % selectivity to cinnamyl alcohol at >99.0 % cinnamaldehyde conversion. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the unliganded Co...N FLP sites can effectively activate cinnamaldehyde and isopropanol and reduce the activation energy barrier, thus significantly improving the catalytic performance. The substrate-extending experiments show that Co 3 O 4 @NC presents brighter prospects in the selective transfer hydrogenation of a series of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes.
