Abstract:This study examines how community norms such as local religious atmosphere and regional economic pressures affect corporate philanthropy. Using hand- collected data, we find that religious atmosphere is significantly positively associated with corporate philanthropic giving and that economic pressure and corporate philanthropy are negatively related. We focus on how boards interpret community norms and in turn how much religious atmosphere and economic pressure influence corporate philanthropic practices. We propose that the number of women directors on boards not only positively moderates the relationship between religious atmosphere and corporate philanthropic giving, but also strengthens the negative relationship between economic pressure and corporate giving. Using a sample of Chinese listed firms during 2010-2014, this study finds strong and robust support for our hypotheses.
