Abstract:Precise control over the size and crystallographic phase of nanocrystals allows the manipulation of their properties and applications as desired. Hexagonal-phase NaYF4 (-NaYF4) upconversion nanocrystals with efficient luminescence are quite desirable for bio-applications, but synthetic control over the nanocrystallite size remains challenging. Herein we verify experimentally that control of the hexagonal-phase nucleation is crucial for controlling the final particle size and the number of hexagonal-phase seeds strongly depends on the actual F(Na):Y ratio. A negligible number of hexagonal-phase seeds were formed at low ratio whereas the high ratio yields a very large number of seeds. We also identify that the actual F(Na):Y ratio is more likely related to the different methods employed for the addition of NH4F and NaOH rather than its initial feeding ratio. By taking advantage of this dependence and varying the reaction conditions (temperature and time), -NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals with a size smaller than 6nm can be synthesized. Theoretical modeling shows a good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of luminescent crystals based on hexagonal-phase NaYF4 upconversion microrods. The synthetic procedure involves an epitaxial end-on growth of upconversion nanocrystals comprising different lanthanide activators onto the NaYF4 microrods. This bottom-up method readily affords multicolor-banded crystals in gram quantity by varying the composition of the activators. Importantly, the end-on growth method using one-dimensional microrods as the template enables facile multicolor tuning in a single crystal, which is inaccessible in conventional upconversion nanoparticles. We demonstrate that these novel materials offer opportunities as optical barcodes for anticounterfeiting and multiplexed labeling applications.
Controlled Synthesis of Monodisperse Hexagonal NaYF₄:Yb/Er Nanocrystals with Ultrasmall Size and Enhanced Upconversion Luminescence

Abstract:The ability to synthesize upconversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) with tailored upconversion luminescence and controlled size is of great importance for biophotonic applications. However, until now, limited success has been met to prepare bright, ultrasmall, and monodispersed β-NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ UCNCs. In this work, we report on a synthetic method to produce monodisperse hexagonal NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals of ultrasmall size (5.4 nm) through a precise control of the reaction temperature and the ratio of Na⁺/Ln3+/F-. We determined the optimum activator concentration of Er3+ to be 6.5 mol % for these UCNCs, yielding about a 5-fold higher upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity than the commonly used formula of NaYF₄:30% Yb3+/2% Er3+. Moreover, a thin epitaxial shell (thickness, 1.9 nm) of NaLnF₄ (Ln = Y, Gd, Lu) was grown onto these ultrasmall NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ NCs, enhancing its UCL by about 85-, 70- and 50-fold, respectively. The achieved sub-10-nm core and core-shell hexagonal NaYF₄:Yb3+/Er3+ UCNCs with enhanced UCL have strong potential applications in bioapplications such as bioimaging and biosensing.
Crystalline Phase and Morphology Controlling to Enhance the Up-Conversion Emission from NaYF4:Yb,Er Nanocrystals

Abstract:NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals with different structures and sizes have been synthesized via a hydrothermal method. Structures and sizes of the NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals are carefully investigated by changing the Gd3+ ion concentrations and reaction temperatures. It is found that the change of Gd3+ doping concentration and reaction temperature not only induces the phase transition but also causes the size difference. The introduction of Gd3+ ions can promote the phase change from cubic to hexagonal structures, which exhibit the different morphologies (nanoparticle vs nanorods). However, by increasing the reaction temperature slightly, the hexagonal structures can be formed with very low or even without any Gd3+ ions. It is shown that the enhanced up-conversion emission can be achieved by well controlling the Gd3+ ion concentrations at the certain reaction temperature to get the pure nanorods structures with suitable sizes.

Abstract:The dopant concentration of lanthanide ions plays one of the critical roles to manipulate size/morphology, photon population pathway, or luminescence color/intensity in upconversion nanoparticles (UCNCs), which have a significant effect on their application developments. Herein, a strategy is demonstrated for simultaneous size, morphology and multicolor luminescence tuning in the single doped lanthanide activator Er 3+ ion system through simply tuning the concentration of Er 3+ ions. The doping of different Er 3+ ion amounts in NaYbF 4 :Er nanocrystals can control nanoparticle size (from several hundreds to tens of nanometers) and morphology. Moreover, multicolor upconversion luminescence involving green, yellow, orange and red can be obtained in the NaYbF 4 :Er UCNCs by changing the excitation power density of 980 nm laser. Mechanistic studies reveal the size and morphology evolution process as well as saturation/cross relaxation effects induced tunable multicolor emissions. These nanocrystals have demonstrated promising potential applications in anticounterfeiting. Our results not only provide a simple and feasible route for simultaneous size/morphology control and multicolor upconversion luminescence tuning, but also can further expand the utility of UCNCs in the frontier applications ranging from optical encoding to information security.

Abstract:Hexagonal phase NaYbF4 has recently been reorganized as a more efficient host material than NaYF4 for constructing multiphoton upconversion nanoparticles. However, the synthesis and size control of NaYbF4 nanoparticles have not been completely fulfilled. This study presents a controlled synthesis of small NaYbF4 nanoparticles as well as a mechanistic investigation of the nanocrystal growth process. The NaYbF4 nanoparticles were synthesized in a ternary solvent mixture composed of oleylamine, oleic acid, and 1-octadecene by an injection technique. The oleylamine molecule as a surface capping ligand is found to play critical roles in controlling the growth of NaYbF4 nanoparticles by promoting conversion of the cubic phase intermediates into the hexagonal phase products. Uniform NaYbF4 nanoparticles with tunable size (from 7 to 70 nm) were readily prepared by controlling a single variable of solvent composition. After coating with NaLuF4 shells of 10 nm in thickness, the small NaYbF4:Er (2%) nanoparticles exhibited an over 700-fold enhancement in red upconversion emission. By introducing Yb3+ ions into the shells, the oleate-capped NaYbF4:Er (2%)@NaLuF4:Yb (25%) upconversion nanoparticles showed an inverse thermal quenching above room temperature. The findings described here are expected to provide a general strategy for facile control of particle size and optical property in other nanomaterials systems.
Hexadecylpyridinium Chloride Mediated Hydrothermal Synthesis of NaYF₄:Yb, Er Nanocrystal and Their Luminescent Properties

Abstract:Upconversion nanocrystals with uniform size and hydrophilic surface have potential applications in biological medical engineering. In this study, hydrophilic NaYF₄:Yb, Er nanospheres were synthesized via hexadecylpyridinium chloride (CPC) mediated hydrothermal process. The synthesized NaYF₄:Yb, Er upconversion nanospheres (UCNSs) were characterized by various characterization methods. Results showed that the synthesized UCNSs exhibited a uniform sphere-like structure with average diameter of ~250 nm. The surface of UCNSs was captured by CPC molecule indicating hydrophilic properties of UCNSs. The spherical UCNSs composed of mixed phase (α+β) NaYF₄ nanocrystals. This is the novel study for synthesis of NaYF₄:Ln3+ crystal employing CPC as ligand. Moreover, the effect of CPC concentration on synthesis of UCNSs was investigated by comparatively studying morphology, crystal phase and luminescent properties of desired sample prepared under different experimental conditions. It was found that high concentrations of CPC ligands were more favorable for forming NaYF₄ crystal nanospheres with morphology that is more regular, have smoother surface, with higher crystallinity and better upconversion fluorescent properties. The possible growing mechanism was proposed and growing of NaYF₄:Yb, Er nanospheres followed the classical Ostwald ripening process.
Size- and Phase-Controlled Synthesis of Monodisperse NaYF4:Yb,Er Nanocrystals from a Unique Delayed Nucleation Pathway Monitored with Upconversion Spectroscopy

Abstract:Monodisperse alpha-NaYF4:Yb,Er and beta-NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals with controlled size, chemical composition, and surface state were synthesized from trifluoroacetate precursors in hot surfactant solutions via a unique delayed nucleation pathway. The growth mechanisms of both alpha- and beta-phase nanocrystals and the underlying alpha ->beta phase transition process were uncovered by upconversion (UC) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The UC emission was sensitive to the growth process of the NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals; that is, the UC intensity is sensitive to the nucleation and phase transition process, and the ratio of green to red emission is also sensitive to the crystallite size and phase, which makes it easy to distinguish various nanocrystal growth stages and phase transition modes with UC spectroscopy. Differently sized monodisperse alpha-NaYF4:Yb,Er nanopolyhedra (5-14 nm) were readily obtained via only prolonging the reaction time. During the reaction, four consecutive nanocrystal growth stages including nucleation in a delayed time, particle growth by monomer supply, size shrinkage by dissolution, and aggregation were identified. The essential of the delayed nucleation was likely due to the requisite in accumulating enough NaF (from the decomposed Na(CF3COO)) for the nanocrystal growth. Monodisperse beta-NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals with tunable sizes in a broad range from 20 to 300 nm were obtained from alpha-NaYF4:Yb,Er monomers by restricting or enhancing the Ostwald-ripening process, in which the alpha ->beta transition happened in a delayed time.

Abstract:As a matrix material, NaYbF4 has attracted more and more attention due to its large absorption cross section and high energy transfer efficiency. In this study, lanthanide doped NaYbF4 upconversion (UC) nano-/micro-crystalline was carefully synthesized by hydrothermal method. The influence of kinds of external conditions, including reaction time, initial reaction solution pH value, organic solvents codoping, and Na+ concentration on crystalline phase, size, morphology and especially luminescent property are systematically studied and the possible formation mechanism based on PH values is emphatically proposed. The products of NaYbF4 with various morphologies range from nanospheres, microprisms, microdisks, hexagonal crown-capped shapes, hexagonal clam-like shapes and hexagonal flower-like shapes were successfully prepared. The results show that the up-conversion luminescence property is positively correlated with the slenderness ratio. Solvents codoping and Na+ concentration can greatly improve the luminescence property, especially for red emission. Impressively, the emission colors and intensities might be finely tuned through finely tuning the PH values, solvents co-doping and Na+ dosage. Furthermore, this study will be expected to contribute to the synthesis of various morphologies and improving the UC intensity of lanthanide doped crystals.

Abstract:Green upconversion emission from hexagonal-phase NaYF4:Yb, Er3+ phosphors can be directly observed with the naked eye. Powders with controlled size and morphology can be synthesized in ethanol and show a minimal decrease in luminescence intensity after 24 It (see Figure). The intense upconversion emission suggests good crystallinity of the materials, which may be used in biological labeling.

Abstract:Hexagonal phase beta-NaYE4:Yb3+/Er3+ thin films composed of hexagonal prism structures were made by an anode electrodeposition from aqueous solution and low temperature annealing. The in-situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance and cyclic voltammetry methods were applied to studied the mechanism of electrodeposition of NaYF4 films. The hexagonal phase NaYE4:Yb3+/Er3+ films exhibited much higher intense green and red emissions excited by 980 nm laser than its cubic phase counterpart and two-photon upconversion mechanism was involved. Abstract:Nanocrystalline infrared-to-visible up-conversion phosphors, ytterbium and erbium co-doped sodium yttrium fluoride, were synthesized. Spherical particles with narrow size distribution were prepared by a co-precipitation method in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Particles of controlled size in the range of 37 to 166 nm diameter were obtained by adjusting the molar ratio of EDTA to total lanthanides. Although the as-prepared nanoparticles emit very weak up-conversion fluorescence when excited by infrared light, the emission was enhanced by up to 40-fold after they were annealed at temperatures between 400 and 600 degreesC. By comparison with the bulk phosphor, the luminescence efficiency of the nanoparticle was estimated to be 1%. Factors affecting the particle size and their up-conversion fluorescence intensity were investigated by various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Preliminary results demonstrated the nanoparticles as promising up-converting fluorescence labels in the detection of biological interactions.

Abstract:Heavy lanthanide element-based NaREF4 nanocrystals have recently been proposed as a promising replacement of classical hexagonal NaYF4 for their efficient luminescence and excellent X-ray attenuation property. However, synthetic control over their particle size remains challenging due to the fast growth and slow nucleation. Herein, a simple and robust approach for the controlled synthesis of small NaYbF4 and NaLuF4 nanocrystals is presented as well as a mechanistic investigation of the nanocrystal growth process. The injection order of NaOH and NH4F plays critical role in controlling the nanocrystal growth by accelerating phase transformation from cubic phase to hexagonal phase. We also verify experimentally that control of the hexagonal-phase nucleation rather than growth process is crucial for controlling the final particle size of NaYbF4 and NaLuF4. After coating an inert shell, we found enhanced downshifting emission of NaYbF4:Er nanocrystals compared with less Yb3+ doping. The results shown here provide a reliable method for preparing small-sized hexagonal NaYbF4 nanocrystals with enhanced downshifting emission, which favors their further applications in bioscience.

Abstract:High-quality rare-earth fluorides, alpha-NaMF4 (M=Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Y, Yb, and Lu) nanocrystals and beta-NaMF4 (M=Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Y, Yb, and Lu) nanoarrays, have been synthesized by using oleic acid as a stabilizing agent through a facile hydrothermal method at 130-230 degrees C. The phase, shape, and size of the products are varied by careful control of synthetic conditions, including hydrothermal temperature and time, and the amounts of reactants and solvents. Tuning the hydrothermal temperature, time, and the amount of NaOH can cause the transformation from the cubic alpha-NaMF4 to hexagonal phase beta-NaMF4. Upon adjustment of the amount of NaOH, NaF, M3+, and ethanol, the morphologies for the beta-NaMF4 nanoarrays can range from tube, rod, wire, and zigzagged rod, to flower-patterned disk. Simultaneously, the size of the rare-earth fluoride crystals is variable from 5 nm to several micrometers. A combination of "diffusion-controlled growth" and the "organic-inorganic interface effect" is proposed to understand the formation of the nanocrystals. An ideal "1D growth" of rare-earth fluorides is preferred at high temperatures and high ethanol contents, from which the tube- and rodlike nanoarrays with high aspect ratio are obtained. In contrast, the disklike beta-NaMF4 nanoarrays with low aspect ratios are produced by decreasing the ethanol content or prolonging the reaction time, an effect probably caused by "1D/2D ripening". Multicolor up-conversion fluorescence is also successfully realized in the Yb3+/Er3+ (green, red) and Yb3+/Tm3+ (blue) co-doped alpha-NaYF4 nanocrystals and beta-NaYF4 nanoarrays by excitation in the NIR region (980 nm).
[The Different Phase, Morphology Controllable Synthesis and Luminescent Properties Investigation of NaYF⁴: Yb, Er]

Abstract:Using sodium fluoride and rare earth nitrate as raw materials and sodium citrate as surfactant, micron grade NaYF4 upconversion luminescent materials were prepared by hydrothermal method. By X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM) and fluorescence spectrometer, the crystal phase, morphology and luminescent characteristics of the prepared samples were investigated. The results showed that the phase of the samples could generate a transition from cubic phase to hexagonal phase by adjusting the proportion (5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11) of NaF/RE , and the X ray diffraction peaks for the cubic and hexagonal phase of samples exactly matched with those of the standard card of PDF# 77-2042 and PDF# 16-0334, respectively. The SEM photographs showed that the crystallinity of samples was high and the dispersibility was favourable, the morphology were translated from microrods to hexagonal microplates. The samples upconversion luminescent spectra showed the intensity enhancement of red and green light emission peaks with increasement of the ratio of NaF/RE3+. The green emission peaks of samples at 520 and 539 nm corresponded to the ²H¹¹/²-⁴-->I₁₅/₂ and ⁴S₃/₂-->⁴I₁₅/₂ level transition of Er³⁺ ion, and the red light emission peaks of samples at 653 nm corresponded to the ⁴F₉/₂-->⁴I₁₅/₂ levelt ransition of Er+ ion. The chromaticity coordinate diagram exhibited that the change of the luminescent color of samples could be achieved by adjusting the ratio of NaF/RE³⁺. With the increasing of NaF/RE³⁺ ratio, for the whole light-emitting colors of samples, the shift from yellow region to near red region could be realized. It can be concluded that through the relatively simple experimental procedure and lower cost materials, the change of phase and morphology, the moving of light-emitting color for sample NaYF4:Yb³⁺, Er³⁺ could be well controlled only by changing the single component (NaF) molar ratio in the raw materials. The effect of phase and morphology of fluorescent materials on their upconversion luminescence has great potential applications in photonic devices and bioanalysis research.

Abstract:Yb3+ and Er3+ ions co-doped α-NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method using citric acid (CA) as chelating ligand and NaNO3 as mineralizer. The influences of the CA/RE (RE = Y+Yb+ Er) molar ratio, reaction time, reaction temperature and the NaNO3/RE molar ratio on the crystal phases and shapes of as-prepared products have been well investigated. The possible formation mechanism has been discussed in detail and an aggregation growth theory has been proposed. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were used to characterize the products. Under 980 nm excitation, the emission intensities of the as-prepared nanocrystals were much stronger than that of the nanocrystals modified by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Additionally, the as-prepared products maintained spherical shape and high degree of monodispersion, which is expected to be suggestive for the preparation of other complex rare earth fluoride compounds.

Abstract:Oil-dispersible Yb-Er co-doped LaF3 upconversion (UC) fluorescent nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized via a liquid-solid twophase approach. The nucleation and growth of the NCs only occurred in the interface of the two phases, which made the process very slow, and thus well-crystallized and regular-shaped LaF3:Yb,Er NCs were obtained. The size, morphology and UC fluorescence of the NCs can be controlled by varying the solvent, temperature and reaction time. (c) 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Colloidal Synthesis and Blue Based Multicolor Upconversion Emissions of Size and Composition Controlled Monodisperse Hexagonal Nayf4 : Yb,Tm Nanocrystals

Abstract:Monodisperse beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals with controlled size (25-150 nm), shape (sphere, hexagonal prism, and hexagonal plate), and composition (Yb: 20-40%, Tm: 0.2-5%) were synthesized from the thermolysis of metal trifluoroacetates in hot surfactant solutions. The upconversion (UC) of near-infrared light (980 nm) to ultra-violet (360 nm), blue (450 and 475 nm), red (650 and 695 nm) and infrared (800 nm) light in the beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals has been studied by UC spectroscopy. Both the total intensity of UC emissions and the relative intensities of emissions at different wavelengths have shown a strong dependence on different particle sizes and different Tm3+ and Yb3+ concentrations. As a result, different overall output colors of UC emissions can be achieved by altering sizes and Yb3+/Tm3+ doping concentrations of the beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals. The intensity-power curves of a series of samples have proved that emissions at 360 and 450 nm can be ascribed to four-photon process (1D2 to 3H6 and 1D2 to 3H4, respectively), while emissions at 475 and 650 nm are three-photon processes (1G4 to 3H6 and 1G4 to 3H4, respectively) and emissions at 695 and 800 nm are two-photon ones (3F2 to 3H6 and 3F4 to 3H6, respectively). A UC saturation effect would occur under a certain excitation intensity of the 980 nm CW diode laser for the as-obtained beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals, leading to the decrease of the slopes of the I-P curves. The results of our study also revealed that the successive transfer model instead of the cooperative sensitization model can be applied to explain the UC behaviors of the beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals. Further, an unexpected stronger emissions of four-photon process at 360 and 450 nm for approximately 50 nm beta-NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanocrystals than those for the bigger (approximately 150 nm) nanocrystals was observed and explained in terms of the effects of crystallite size, surface-to-volume ratio and homogeneity of the doping cations.
Lattice Strain Enhanced Phase Transformation of NaYbF4: 2% Er3+ Upconverting Nanoparticles by Tuning the Molar Ratio of Na+/Yb3+

Abstract:NaYbF4 upconverting nanoparticles have enhanced optical properties compared to the NaYF4. Controllable phase transformation from cubic to hexagonal of NaYbF4 is achieved by increasing molar ratio of [Na+]/[Yb3+]. The Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the phase transformation is trigged by lattice strain due to accumulation of cation atoms dislocation. These results provide new insights into growth of upconverting nanoparticles. NaYbF4 upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) have enhanced optical properties compared to the NaYF4 UCNPs. However, synthesis of monodisperse NaYbF4 with controllable size and optical properties poses challenges, and the mechanism of phase transformation remains to be understood. Here, they report on the effect of Na+/Yb3+ molar ratio on the morphological and optical properties of upconverting NaYbF4: 2% Er3+ nanoparticles. Controllable transformation of cubic phase nanoparticles produced with [Na+]/[Yb3+] = 1 to hexagonal phase is achieved by increasing Na+ content. The hexagonal UCNPs produced with [Na+]/[Yb3+] = 4 have significantly enhanced intensity of optical emission of ≈600 times compared with the pure cubic phase crystal. The work reveals that the increasing dislocation of sodium and ytterbium distribution cause the accumulation of the lattice strain with increasing Na+ content, and triggers the lattice strain‐mediated phase transformation in cubic cell, as confirmed by the Density Function Theory simulations. These results provide new insights into the growth of UCNPs and pave the way for developing controlled synthesis of UCNPs for applications as bio‐probes and for energy harvesting.
