Abstract:The effect of exposed facets and oxygen vacancies on the catalytic activity of PdxCe1-xO2-delta nanorods for low-temperature CO oxidation has been investigated based on both experimental and theoretical methods. PdxCe1-xO2-delta nanorods with exposed {100} and {110} facets are more active than those with the {111} facet, and such superior active facets can become selectively accessible by modulating the calcination temperature. Moreover, a post H-2 reduction process further enhances the low temperature activity of PdxCe1-xO2-delta composites with a CO initial conversion temperature as low as 24 degrees C. It is suggested that the enhanced activity by the H-2 reduction process is mostly attributed to the promotion of oxygen vacancy concentration on the exposed facets. This is in reasonable agreement with the theoretical prediction that the CO oxidation proceeds via an oxygen vacancy-mediated Eley-Rideal mechanism on PdxCe1-xO2-delta nanorods. Our work highlights the importance of both exposed facets and oxygen vacancies on low temperature CO oxidation for PdxCe1-xO2-delta nanorod catalysts.
Strong Local Coordination Structure Effects on Subnanometer PtOx Clusters over CeO2 Nanowires Probed by Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.

Abstract:The CexZr1-xO2 (x=0-1) composite oxides were prepared by sol-gel method, and then they were used as supportpr tp prepare PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts. The effect of Ce/Zr atomic ratio on the structure of crystalline phase, redox property and TWC catalytic activity of CexZr1-xO2 composite oxides and PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts were studied. The results show that phase structure of CexZr1-xO2 composite oxide depends on the CeO2 content. The different Ce/Zr atomic ratio affects the catalytic activity of PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts much. In the reaction of NO-CO and CO-O-2, the catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalyst is the highest. However, the catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 catalyst is the highest in the reaction of CH4-O-2. The alpha: H-2-TPR peak is related probably to the NO-CO and CO-O-2 catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalysts.

Abstract:The CexZryO2(x=0~1, y=1-x) complex oxides was prepared by sol-gel method, and PdO/CexZryO2 catalysts was prepared with it as the carrier. The TWC properties were evaluated using NO-CO reaction and CO-CH4 oxidation reaction as model reaction, and the carrier and catalyst was characterized by XRD and H2-TPR method. Results shown, that the atomic ratio nx:ny had critical impact on the TWC properties of the carrier CexZryO2 and PdO catalyst, and CexZryO2 complex oxides with different nx:ny had different crystalline phase and reduction, and the PdO catalyst carried was different. The PR peak was relating probably to the NO - CO and CO - O2 catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalysts.

Abstract:The catalytic efficiency of CeO2 carriers and the catalytic properties of palladium (Pd) nanocrystals loaded on different morphology CeO2 carrier were studied for lean methane (CH4) combustion. The catalytic activity of simple CeO2 carriers was ranked in the order of rod-CeO2(r-CeO2) > cube-CeO2(c-CeO2) > octahedral-CeO2(o-CeO2). After the Pd species was loaded on CeO2, 90% of CH4 was converted at 348 degrees C catalyzed by Pd/octa-hedral-CeO2 (Pd/o-CeO2) with (1 1 1) crystal faces, which had much higher catalytic activity comparing with Pd loaded on c-CeO2 with (1 0 0) crystal faces and r-CeO2 with (1 1 0) and (1 0 0) crystal faces. The results of XRD, HRTEM, EDS, H-2-TPR, XPS and elemental mapping showed that the Pd species in the form of Pd-0 and PdO were highly dispersed on surface of all CeO2 carriers. Most importantly, quasi In-situ XPS results convinced that Ce3+/Ce4+ ion pairs played an important role in the catalytic combustion of low-concentration methane by adsorbing or releasing oxygen. Compared with r-CeO2 and c-CeO2, the concentration of Ce3+ on the surface of o-CeO2 carrier was greatly increased when the Pd species were present, which indirectly reflected that the concentration of oxygen vacancies on the carrier surface also increased. Consequently, the high catalytic activity of Pd/o-CeO2 is not only related to the high dispersion of Pd-0 and PdO species on the surface of the catalyst, but also closely related to the synergistic interaction between Pd species and (1 1 1) specific faces of o-CeO2 exposing.

Abstract:The present work reports the rapid preparation of CeO2 nanorods by surfactant-free precipitation for the first time, which initiates a strategy for the quantitative elucidation of the importance of the exposed crystallographic planes and the oxygen vacancy concentrations of different morphologies of nanoceria. These relations are revealed through comparison of the relative surface areas of the exposed crystallographic planes. The precipitation temperature was critical in that nanooctahedra formed at the three lower temperatures and nanorods formed at the highest. The key feature to differentiate the photocatalytic performance was the morphology that the nanorods exhibit similar to 200% superior performance compared to those of the nanooctahedra. The principal reason for this is the presence of exposed {110} planes in the nanorods, which are not present in nanoctahedra. This crystallographic dependence of the improved performance of the nanorods is attributed directly to the greater oxygen vacancy concentration for the calculated surface area of this morphology.
Enhanced Low-Temperature CO Oxidation Activity Through Crystal Facet Engineering of Pd/CeO2 Catalysts

Abstract:Cerium dioxide (CeO2) 2 ) supported palladium (Pd) catalysts have found widespread application in CO oxidation reaction owing to their exceptional catalytic performance. The morphology of the CeO2 2 support dictates the exposed crystal plane, exerting a profound influence on surface structure and redox properties. This is crucial as the atomic arrangement at the surface directly impacts catalytic activity. In this study, a range of CeO2 2 supports with diverse morphologies ( e.g. nano-octahedra, nano-cubes, nano-particles, nano-spheres, and nano-rods) were successfully synthesized through hydrothermal methods and subsequently supported with Pd for CO oxidation. The spherical 1Pd/CeO2-S 2 -S catalyst, revealing exposed (111) + (100) crystal planes, exhibited significantly higher CO catalytic oxidation activity compared to the catalysts with other morphological CeO2 2 supports. The results indicated a positive correlation between the content of Pd x Ce 1-x O 2-y species and catalytic activity. Notably, this species was most abundantly formed in the spherical 1Pd/CeO2-S 2 -S catalyst with exposed (111) + (100) crystal planes. The presence of this active species facilitated the formation of surface defects, increased oxygen vacancy concentration, and enhanced metal-support interaction, consequently greatly improving the CO low-temperature catalytic oxidation activity. Consequently, the oxidation state of Pd in the Pd/CeO2 2 catalyst could be effectively regulated by controlling the exposure of (111) + (100) crystalline surfaces of the CeO2 2 support, further optimizing the catalytic performance of the Pd/CeO2 2 catalytic system.

Abstract:CeO2 supports with dominating facets, i.e., low index (100), (110) and (111) facets, are prepared. The facet effects on the structure and catalytic performance of supported vanadium oxide catalysts are investigated using oxidative dehydrogenation of methanol as a model reaction. In the presence of mixed facets, Infrared and Raman characterizations demonstrate that surface vanadia species preferentially deposit on CeO2 (100) facets, presumably because of its higher surface energy. At the same surface vanadium densities, VOx species on (100) facets show better dispersion, followed by (110) and (111) facets. The VOx species on CeO2 nanorods with (110) and (100) facets display higher activity and lower apparent activation energies compared to that on CeO2 nanopolyhedras with dominating (111) facets and CeO2 nanocubes with dominating (100) facets. The higher activity for VOx/CeO2 (110) might be related to the more abundant oxygen vacancies present on the (110) facets, evidenced from Raman spectroscopic measurements.

Abstract:Atomic-scale insights into the interactions between metals and supports play a crucial role in optimizing catalyst design, understanding catalytic mechanisms, and enhancing chemical conversion processes. The effects of oxide support on the dynamic behavior of supported metal species during pretreatments or reactions have been attracting a lot of attention; however, very less systematic integrations are carried out experimentally using real catalysts. In this study, we here utilized facet-controlled CeO2 as examples to explore their influence on the supported Pt species (1.0 wt %) during the reducing and oxidizing pretreatments that are typically applied in heterogeneous catalysts. By employing a combination of microscopy, spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations, it is demonstrated that the exposed crystal facets of CeO2 govern the evolution behavior of supported Pt species under different environmental conditions. This leads to distinct local coordinations and charge states of the Pt species, which directly influence the catalytic reactivity and can be leveraged to control the catalytic performance for CO oxidation reactions.

Abstract:To investigate the interaction between noble metal and CeO2, a Pd-doped CeO2 catalyst was prepared by sol–gel method, and the catalyst was then treated in static air and a H2/O2 alternating flow at 800°C, respectively. It is found by step-scanning XRD that Pd ions migrate out of the ceria lattice during the redox treatment, while the exudation of Pd is not so obvious after the oxidative treatment. For the CO oxidation activity, the redox treated catalyst is seriously weakened compared with the oxidative-treated one. This difference is ascribed to the encapsulation of Pd crystallites by the CeO2 support during the redox treatment, which is confirmed by XPS and CO-TPR. Based on the activity and FTIR results, it is proposed that, CO oxidation at low temperatures proceeds mainly via the reaction between the adsorbed CO on Pd sites and the lattice oxygen of surface CeO2 at the Pd–Ce interface.

Abstract:Nanostructured cerium-based catalytic materials have attracted much attention in the field of redox catalysis, due to the excellent active sites exposed on the nanocrystal surface, and herein, the oxygen vacancy (OV) and the crystal facet effect of typical model nanostructured ceria (Nano-CeO2) were focused and investigated for the catalytic aerobic cyclohexane oxidation. Specifically for the CeO2 nanocubes with a {100} facet, the CeO2 nanopolyhedrons with a dominant {111} facet, and the CeO2 nanorods with a dominant {110} facet, the catalytic roles of the OV and acid sites toward cyclohexane oxidation were systematically investigated. Surface oxygen vacancy (Sur-OV) and intrinsic oxygen vacancy (Int-OV), and particularly the active Sur-OV and active Int-OV performing catalytic activity under a working state specific for cyclohexane oxidation, were accurately recognized and distinguished. Furthermore, the activation ability of the OV sites for activating molecular oxygen into active oxygen species (OActive) was also revealed, and the acid site properties, which include the acidity and the types of acid sites, were probed and quantified. The Nano-CeO2 with an exposed {100} facet possesses the most active Sur-OV, determining the catalytic activity, and has the strongest activation ability, contributing to a high reaction activity under extremely inert conditions. The Nano-CeO2 with a {110} dominant facet with the most active Int-OV and abundant acid sites could accelerate further oxidation to adipic acid; the effect of the two key sites was described particularly by the α factor (= Total Acidity × Amount of Active Int-OV). Finally, the property–performance relationship toward cyclohexane oxidation was speculated based on the Nano-CeO2 catalytic system.

Abstract:The oxygen vacancies of CeO2 play a pivotal role in effectively dispersing and stabilizing noble metal nanoparticles (NPs). During the NPs loading process, the post-treatment condition, e.g. atmosphere, has a certain influence on the oxygen vacancy concentration of CeO2, highlighting the importance of suitable choice of loading technique. Herein, A-Pt/HCeO2 and I-Pt/HCeO2 catalysts are prepared by loading Pt NPs on HCeO2 with abundant oxygen vacancies (obtained from the calcination of a Ce(OH)CO3 precursor under H2) using ALD deposition and impregnation methods, respectively. Through detailed characterization and in situ DRIFTS analysis, it was noted that compared to the I-Pt/HCeO2 catalyst, the A-Pt/HCeO2 catalyst processes a uniform distribution of Pt NPs, more Pt0 active sites and oxygen vacancies, thus exhibiting an outstanding catalytic performance for CO oxidation. The ALD deposition technique mitigates the effects of high-temperature sintering and atmospheric exposure during the loading process of noble metal NPs, offering a more accurate assessment of the catalytic performance of catalysts.

Abstract:CeO2, Ce2oZr1 and Ce10Zr1 mixed oxides with uniform nanocubic morphology and varied amounts of surface oxygen vacancies were synthesized to study the influence of surface oxygen vacancies on soot catalytic oxidation in a low concentration of gaseous O-2. It is presented that excessive surface oxygen vacancies may lead to low soot oxidation activity and catalyst deactivation during the reaction. H-2-TPR results indicate that the doping of Zr does not decrease the amount of surface redox sites. Instead, it induces the formation of surface capping oxygen (O2-) rather than the highly active O-x(-) species, which hereby affects the catalyst behavior significantly. These point out that a ceria-based catalyst should not contain too many surface oxygen vacancies when designing for the application in gasoline particulate filters. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:CO direct esterification to dimethyl oxalate (DMO) has important industrial application value. Pd-based heterogeneous catalysts have been often utilized for this reaction. However, the effects of defect structures causing by the different morphologies of the support on the catalytic performance has not been investigated sufficiently. In this work, three different morphologies of CeO2 support (denoted as rod, cube, and octahedron) loading Pd were synthesized, and further investigated their catalytic activities for CO direct esterification to DMO. The Pd/CeO2-rod catalyst exhibited the best CO conversion compared with Pd/CeO2-cube and Pd/CeO2-octa. The results of Raman and XPS show that CeO2-rod has the highest oxygen vacancy concentration than those of CeO2-cube and CeO2-octa. In addition, it was found that partial interfacial electrons transfer from Pd to CeO2 support at the interface from the result of XPS. More intriguingly, the result of in situ DRIRS of CO exhibits that the partial interfacial electrons transfer from CeO2 to Pd, resulting from oxygen vacancies serve as a charge compensator to promote partial electrons transfer. The enriched electron of Pd would promote the adsorption and activation of CO, thus enhancing the catalytic activity. This work will provide a general understanding of the support effect to catalytic performance, which induced by the oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:The surface chemistry of CeO2 is dictated by the well‐defined facets, which exert great influence on the supported metal species and the catalytic performance. Here we report Pt1/CeO2 catalysts exhibiting specific structures of Pt–O coordination on different facets by using adequate preparation methods. The simple impregnation method results in Pt–O3 coordination on the predominantly exposed {111} facets, while the photo‐deposition method achieves oriented atomic deposition for Pt–O4 coordination into the “nano‐pocket” structure of {100} facets at the top. Compared to the impregnated Pt1/CeO2 catalyst showing normal redox properties and low‐temperature activity for CO oxidation, the photo‐deposited Pt1/CeO2 exhibits uncustomary strong metal‐support interaction and extraordinary high‐temperature stability. The preparation methods dictate the facet‐dependent diversity of Pt–O coordination, resulting in the further activity‐selectivity trade‐off. By applying specific preparation routes, our work provides an example of disentangling the effects of support facets and coordination environments for nano‐catalysts.

Abstract:Tuning the surface chemical property and the local environment of nanocrystals is crucial for realizing a high catalytic performance in various reactions. Herein, we aim to elucidate the structure sensitivity of Pd facets on the surface catalytic hydrogenation reaction and to identify what role the nanoconfinement effect plays in the catalytic properties of Pd nanocrystal catalysts. By controlling the coating structures of mesoporous silica (mSiO2) on Pd nanocrystals with different exposed facets that include {100}, {111}, and {hk0}, we present a series of Pd@mSiO2 nanoreactors in core-shell and yolk-shell structures and the discovery of a partial-coated structure, which can provide different types of nanoconfinement, and we propose a seed size-dominated growth mechanism. We demonstrate that a superior activity was exhibited in Pd nanocrystals enclosed by the {hk0} facet as compared to the Pd{100} and Pd{111} facets, and substantially enhanced efficiency and stability were achieved in Pd@mSiO2 particles with yolk-shell structures, indicating a crucial superiority of optimizing the configuration of crystal facets and nanoconfinement. Our study provides an efficient strategy to rationally design and optimize nanocatalysts for promoting catalytic performance.
Distinct Crystal‐Facet‐Dependent Behaviors for Single‐Atom Palladium‐On‐Ceria Catalysts: Enhanced Stabilization and Catalytic Properties

Abstract:High-performance, fully atomically dispersed single-atom catalysts (SACs) are promising candidates for next-generation industrial catalysts. However, it remains a great challenge to avoid the aggregation of isolated atoms into nanoparticles during the preparation and application of SACs. Here, the evolution of Pd species is investigated on different crystal facets of CeO2 , and vastly different behaviors on the single-atomic dispersion of surface Pd atoms are surprisingly discovered. In situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in situ near-ambient-pressure-XPS (NAP-XPS), in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveal that, in a reducing atmosphere, more oxygen vacancies are generated on the (100) facet of CeO2 , and Pd atoms can be trapped and thus feature atomic dispersion; by contrast, on the CeO2 (111) facet, Pd atoms will readily aggregate into clusters (Pdn ). Furthermore, Pd1 /CeO2 (100) gives a high selectivity of 90.3% for the catalytic N-alkylation reaction, which is 2.8 times higher than that for Pdn /CeO2 (111). This direct evidence demonstrates the crucial role of crystal-facet effects in the preparation of metal-atom-on-metal-oxide SACs. This work thus opens an avenue for the rational design and targeted synthesis of ultrastable and sinter-resistant SACs.
