Abstract:Taking advantage of the piezotronic effect, enhanced photocatalytic performance of a Ag2S@ ZnO hybrid photocatalyst was achieved under sonication. Decorating Ag2S (similar to 1.4 eV bandgap) nanoparticles on ZnO (similar to 3.3 eV bandgap) nanowire surfaces successfully extended the light response to the visible light range. The formation of type II band alignment at the Ag2S/ZnO heterointerface facilitated the separation of photoexcited electrons and holes, promoting utilization of photoexcited charge carriers in the photocatalytic process. Furthermore, the strain-generated positive piezocharges effectively lowered the barrier height, considerably motivating charge transport across the Ag2S/ZnO heterointerface, which further boosted the hybrid photocatalyst performance. The high reproducibility of the photocatalytic activities indicated that the modification of ZnO nanowires with Ag2S nanoparticles effectively stabilized the photocatalyst in reactions. The degradation rate of Ag2S@ ZnO nanowires remained at C/C-0 = 18.6% after eight cycles, while bare ZnO nanowires exhibited poorer performance (C/C-0 = 48.1%). This study showed the effectiveness of using the piezotronic effect in water purification and recovery by combined use of solar and mechanical energy.

Abstract:In this work, the bi-harvesting of light and vibration energy is realized in hydrothermally-synthesized ZnO nanorods which is designed to achieve photo-/piezo-bi-catalysis for dye decomposition. In the presence of both UV irradiation and vibration, the decomposition ratio of ZnO nanorods for acid orange 7 is similar to 80.8% within 100 min, which is higher than the value of similar to 56.7% for photo-catalysis or the value of similar to 31.8% for piezo-catalysis. The enhanced photo-/piezo-bi-catalysis of ZnO nanorods in dye decomposition can be attributed to that the piezoelectric potential which formed in piezocatalysis process can help separate the photogenerated electron-hole pairs, therefore achieving a synergy effect between photocatalysis and piezocatalysis. The excellent photo-/piezo-bi-catalysis of ZnO can potentially find application in enhancing catalytic efficiency of dye decomposition through harvesting the light and vibration energy present in natural environments.

Abstract:Ag quantum dots (Ag QDs) sensitized TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs)/ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunctions were fabricated by a three-step method and investigated as photocatalysts. Experimental results showed that the novel material exhibited enhanced optical properties and a high degradation rate (for methyl orange) under UV light (109% compared to bare TiO2 NRAs). The high rate was attributed to an increase in the separation of electrons-holes induced by the introduction of the ZnO NPs and the localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag QDs. The degradation mechanism was elucidated based on the band structure. It is suggested that the TiO2/ZnO/Ag nanostructure developed in our work can provide a new platform for the design of highly efficient photocatalysts.
Improving the Performance of ZnS Photocatalyst in Degrading Organic Pollutants by Constructing Composites with Ag2O

Abstract:ZnS is a promising photocatalyst in water purification, whereas its low photon efficiency and poor visible-light response restrict its application. Constructing composites may help solve these problems. In this work, Ag2O was introduced to ZnS for the first time based on their energy band characteristics to form a novel ZnS/Ag2O composite photocatalyst. In the model reaction of degrading methylene blue, the as-designed catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity among a series of ZnS-based composite photocatalysts under similar conditions. The catalytic rate constant was up to 0.138 min−1, which is 27.4- and 15.6-times higher than those of ZnS and Ag2O. This composite degraded 92.4% methylene blue in 50 min, while the ratios were 31.9% and 68.8% for ZnS and Ag2O. Catalytic mechanism study based on photoluminescence and radical-scavenging experiments revealed that the enhanced photocatalytic activity was attributed to the composite structure of ZnS/Ag2O. The structure not only facilitated the separation and transmission of photogenerated carriers but also extended the light response range of the catalyst. The as-designed ZnS/Ag2O composite is promising in degrading organic pollutants in water.

Abstract:Piezoelectric field engineering has been recently proved to restrain the photogenerated carrier recombination both in the bulk and on the surface of photocatalyst. Herein, we proposed a bi-piezoelectric ZnO nanorods (NR)/PVDF-HFP spongy film that can utilize water flow vibration to boost the photocatalytic degradation of organic dye. The composite photocatalyst can be deformed by water flow to generate an integrated piezoelectric field from PVDF-HFP and ZnO NR, which can considerably drive the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers in ZnO NR. As a result, the ZnO NR/PVDF-HFP spongy film shows a ∼ 3 fold increase in reaction rate constant of degrading methyl orange (MO) with irradiation as flow speed increases from 200 rpm to 1000 rpm. A model about the bi-piezoelectric effect of ZnO NR/PVDF-HFP was configurated according to a series of characterization by piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) and photoluminescence (PL). This work demonstrates the contribution of the bi-piezoelectric effect to photocatalytic water decontamination and provides a promising strategy to use dual-sustainable energy— solar and water energy.

Abstract:AgI nanoparticles decorated with ZnO flower-like composites were successfully synthesized via citric acid-induced hydrothermal reaction and subsequent chemical deposition in the presence of ammonium hydroxide. The effects of AgI-loading content and the piezoelectric effect of ZnO were investigated using different technologies. The crystal structures and optical and photocatalytic properties revealed that the AgI particles were successfully loaded on the flower-like ZnO through the directed diffusion process of charge-induced deposition. Results also showed that the band gap of the AgI/ZnO composite located between those of the ZnO and the AgI, which was consistent with the theoretic simulation. The degradation rate of RhB induced by the AgI/ZnO composites was three times larger than that of AgI, and the heterojunction exhibited high photocatalytic degradation efficiency for MO and TC. Besides, the photodegradation efficiency remained high after six times. Radical scavenger experiments implied that e− and h+ played important roles in the photocatalytic process. The photodegradation time was considerably shortened while maintaining increased degradation efficiency after adding ultrasonic vibration due to the rapid separation of carriers caused by the piezo-photocatalysis coupling effect.

Abstract:The unrecyclability and low photocatalytic performance are two important problems that significantly limit the usages of ZnO in photocatalysis. In this article, ZnO/Fe3O4 nanocomposites with residual expansion strain have been synthesized by solvothermal method and sintering-cooling processes. On one hand, the addition of Fe3O4 nanoparticles provides a possible way for recycling the composites by magnetic attraction. On the other hand, the existence of residual expansion strain in ZnO is favorable for the introduction of piezoelectric potential, which provides an internal driving force for decreasing the recombination rate of photoinduced electron-hole pairs, and improves photocatalytic ability of the ZnO/Fe3O4 nanocomposites. Compared with the composites with little residual expansion strain, the photocatalytic activity of the composites with large residual expansion strain has been increased by 66%. This research shows the possible applications of piezotronic effect in photocatalysis and related areas, providing a new strategy to prepare recyclable photocatalysts with improved photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Piezoelectric effect, plasma effect and semiconductor heterostructure are important strategies for enhanced photocatalytic performance. Herein, we developed a novel heterostructure piezoelectric photocatalyst, Ag/Ag2S/BiFeO3 (AAS/BFO), for photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin from water. Experimental results verified the enhancement of combining heterostructure piezoelectric polarization effect, which promotes efficient migration and separation of photogenerated carriers due to the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag nanoparticles. Additionally, the introduction of Ag2S constructs a new heterostructure, that enhances the electron transport rate and improves the separation efficiency on electron-hole pairs. Under ultrasonic stimulation and visible light irradiation, the degradation efficiencies of 15 %-AAS/BFO towards ciprofloxacin, methyl orange and methylene blue are significantly enhanced compared to pure BFO fibers. The demonstrated AAS/BFO material based on the synergistic piezoelectric effect and plasmon heterostructure shows potential in efficient organic pollutants water treatment and transforming mechanical energy into chemical energy.
Piezo-enhanced photodegradation of organic pollutants on Ag3PO4/ZnO nanowires using visible light and ultrasonic

Abstract:An imperative challenge emerged in the area of photocatalysis is the recombination of photoinduced electron–hole, which severely restricts the photodegradation efficiency of organic pollutants. This study proposes a piezoelectric Ag3PO4/ZnO nanowire with enhanced degradation performance of organic pollutants. The proposed nanowire can generate a piezoelectric effect under ultrasonic vibration to promote the separation and transfer of photoinduced carriers. The Ag3PO4/ZnO nanowires are fabricated by a simple two-step approach, and its structure and properties are tested by various methods. Results show that the Ag3PO4 nanoparticles are attached on the surface of the ZnO nanowires, which endow the photocatalyst with enhanced absorption in the visible-light region. Photochemical and photoluminescence studies show that Ag3PO4/ZnO nanowires have good electron–hole pairs separation. Under light and ultrasonic radiation, Ag3PO4/ZnO nanowires (APZ-3) on a stainless steel mesh (3.0 × 3.0 cm, ~30 mg) show an optimum piezo-photocatalytic performance for MB with 98.16% degradation rate in 30 min. The reaction rate constants of piezo-photocatalytic Ag3PO4/ZnO nanowires (APZ-3) are 4.13 times of those conventional photocatalytic ZnO nanowires. In addition, the as-prepared sample is applied to the treatment of antibiotics in aqueous solutions, such as ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and ofloxacin, and achieves good degradation efficiency. The enhanced photocatalytic performance can be owed to the formation of the p–n heterojunction at the Ag3PO4/ZnO interface and the generation of the piezoelectric effect of ZnO nanowires in the degradation process. The results also demonstrate an economical way for practical applications in the degradation of organic pollutants at the industrial level.

Abstract:Constructing heterojunctions in a rational and effective way plays a vital role in enhancing the catalytic performance of piezo-/ferroelectric nanomaterials. In this paper, a new material called Ag 2 O@KNbO 3 was fabricated using solvothermal and alkaline deposition methods. This material was found to be an effective catalyst for breaking down various organic pollutants, for example, Orange II, Methyl orange, etc. Under optimal conditions, Ag 2 O@KNbO 3 (1:1) demonstrated superior piezocatalytic activity with a degradation efficiency of 97.8% for Orange II within 120 min and a high TOC removal efficiency of 58.4%. The cycle stability for Orange II removal was also excellent. After 5 cycles, the degradation efficiency of Orange II still surpassed 95%. The related enhancement mechanism of the piezocatalytic activity was elaborated in detail, with Ag 2 O/KNbO 3 heterojunctions promoting directed charge movement, reducing impedance of charge transport, and hindering electron-hole recombination, thereby improving charge transfer efficiency. Additionally, OH was confirmed to be the primary active species by electron spin resonance analysis and free radical capture experiment. Notably, a possible degradation pathway of Orange II was inferred according to the LC-MS measurement. Overall, this study provides a promising approach for designing and synthesizing new piezoelectric catalytic materials.

Abstract:One-dimensional ZnFe2O4-decorated CdS 0D/1D composites were successfully prepared by a low-temperature hydrothermal method. The existence of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles could greatly prevent the CdS nanowires from agglomerating. Compared with primary CdS nanowires and ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles, the photoactivity of CdS/ZnFe2O4 composites with the optimal ratio was respectively enhanced by 2.3 and 6.6 times in the process of photodegrading organic molecules. The proposed photocatalytic mechanism was verified by a radical trapping test. The improved stability and the prolonged carriers lifetime in the composites were ascribed to the existing built-in field in the interface, facilitating the fast separation of photoinduced charge carriers. It was further validated by the room-temperature photoluminescence and the electrochemical impedance spectra.
Dissolved oxygen enhanced piezo-photocatalytic performance in Ag dots-modified BaTiO 3 nanoparticles for efficient degradation of multiple organic pollutants

Abstract:Piezoelectric nanomaterials have attracted much attention due to their ability to modulate photo-excited carrier separation and migration under strain. Perovskite-structured BaTiO 3 (BT) is a promising piezo-photocatalytic material due to its high piezoelectric coefficient and special phase structure. In this work, a series of x wt.% Ag/BT composites prepared by a two-step approach were developed for piezo-photocatalysis applications. The 0.8 wt.% Ag/BT showed an excellent piezo-photocatalytic performance for degrading 75.8 % Rhodamine B (RhB) in 60 min. Especially, the catalytic performances were strongly correlated with the atmosphere conditions of the catalyst. The piezo-photodegradation rate of RhB by 0.8 wt.% Ag/BT under O 2 atmosphere reached 95.7 % in 40 min, and the first order kinetic rate constant ( k ) reached 0.06759 min −1 , which was 9.9 and 2.4 times that of N 2 and air condition, respectively. The Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed that dissolved oxygen could enhance the material's adsorption of RhB. Compared with hydroxyl free radicals (OH) and holes ( h + ), superoxide radicals (O 2 – ) play an indispensable role in the catalytic process through the trapping experiments and ESR analyses. Furthermore, the RhB degradation pathway and potential ecotoxicity were also proposed. This work is hoped to provide an understanding the mechanism of piezo-photocatalysis and bring new ideas for the development of piezo-photocatalysis catalysis for multifunctional environmental applications.

Abstract:Piezo-photocatalysis combines photocatalysis and piezoelectric effects to enhance catalytic efficiency by creating an internal electric field in the photocatalyst, improving carrier separation and overall performance. This study presents a high-performance piezo-photocatalyst for efficient dye degradation using a synergistic barium titanate (BTO)-MXene composite. The composite was synthesized via a facile method, combining the unique properties of BTO nanoparticles with the high conductivity of MXene. The structural and morphological analysis confirmed the successful formation of the composite, with well-dispersed BTO nanoparticles on the MXene surface. The piezo-photocatalytic activity of the composite was evaluated using a typical dye solution (Rhodamine B: RhB) under ultraviolet irradiation and mechanical agitation. The results revealed a remarkable enhancement in dye degradation (90 % in 15 min for piezo-photocatalysis) compared to individual stimuli (58.2 % for photocatalysis and 95.8 % in 90 min for piezocatalysis), highlighting the synergistic effects between BTO and MXene. The enhanced catalytic performance was attributed to the efficient charge separation and transfer facilitated by the composite's structure, leading to increased reactive species generation and dye molecule degradation. Furthermore, the composite exhibited excellent stability and reusability, showcasing its potential for practical applications in wastewater treatment. Overall, this work represents a promising strategy for designing high-performance synergistic catalysts, addressing the pressing need for sustainable solutions in environmental remediation.
Enhanced Photocatalysis by Synergistic Piezotronic Effect and Exciton–Plasmon Interaction Based on (Ag‐Ag 2 S)/BaTiO 3 Heterostructures

Abstract:Piezotronic and plasmonic effects are effective strategies to improve photocatalytic performance. Combining these two effects in one photocatalytic heterostructure is intriguing, but has yet to be reported. Here, a hybrid ternary structure ((silver‐silver sulfide)/barium titanate (Ag‐Ag2S)/BaTiO3) is introduced, where the synergistic exciton–plasmon interaction in Ag‐Ag2S and Ag2S/BaTiO3 heterojunction tuned by piezoelectric polarization can enhance the photon absorption and charge carrier separation to promote photocatalysis efficiency. The exciton–plasmon interaction in Ag‐Ag2S can amplify the plasmon resonance to the semiconductor region and enhance the light absorption of Ag2S. The piezoelectric polarization can tune the band structure of BaTiO3 and then change the heterojunction between Ag2S/BaTiO3 from Type I (i.e., straddling energy band alignments between BaTiO3 and Ag2S) to Type II (i.e., Z‐scheme system between BaTiO3 and Ag2S with a staggered energy band alignment), which can accelerate the separation of electron‐hole pairs. Using this hybrid material, a high methyl orange (MO) degradation rate up to 90% within 30 min is obtained, which is 20% higher than that of Ag/BaTiO3. The demonstrated hybrid material based on the synergistic piezotronic effect and exciton–plasmon interaction shows great promise in pollutant treatment with high efficiency.

Effective promoting piezocatalytic property of zinc oxide for degradation of organic pollutants and insight into piezocatalytic mechanism

Abstract:The piezoelectric zinc oxides with different morphology (ZnO nanoparticles and nanorods, hereafter abbreviated as ZnO NPs and NRs) are successfully synthesized using facile, green and harmless solid-state chemistry method at room temperature. The piezocatalytic activity of zinc oxide towards methylene blue (MB) of organic pollutants degradation has been explored under ultrasonic vibration. The ZnO NRs exhibit effectively enhanced piezocatalytic performance towards degradation dye compared with the ZnO NPs. In particular, the piezocatalytic decolorization ratio of MB solution is up to ~38% in ZnO NRs under 120 min, ~ 99% under 5.5 h and show good recycling utilization characteristics, indicating great potential for dye wastewater decolorization treatment. The main oxidizing hydroxyl radical (OH) and superoxide radicals (O2-) of the piezocatalytic reactions are confirmed and the production of piezocatalytic degradation process induced polarization electric charges. Moreover, we investigate the relationship between morphology and piezoelectric potential based on the finite element method for ZnO NPs and NRs, which further clarify the enhanced piezocatalytic activity and insight into piezocatalytic mechanism. This work offers a novel strategy towards wastewater decontamination applications and further understanding the relationship between piezocatalysis, morphology, and piezocatalytic mechanism in piezoelectric materials.

Abstract:Organic contaminants have posed a direct and substantial risk to human wellness and the environment. In recent years, piezoelectric catalysis has evolved as a novel and effective method for decomposing these contaminants. Although piezoelectric materials offer a wide range of options, most related studies thus far have focused on inorganic materials and have paid little attention to organic materials. Organic materials have advantages, such as being lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to process, over inorganic materials. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the progress made in the research on piezoelectric catalysis using organic materials, high-lighting their catalytic efficiency in addressing various pollutants. In addition, the applications of organic materials in piezoelectric catalysis for water decomposition to produce hydrogen, disinfect bacteria, treat tumors, and reduce carbon dioxide are presented. Finally, future developmental trends regarding the piezoelectric catalytic potential of organic materials are explored.

Abstract:The accurate detection and efficient catalytic treatment of pollutants are essential for environmental protection. In this study, we propose a Au/Ag/CuO nanowire (NW)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate capable of achieving the highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection as well as effective piezoelectric photodegradation of organic pollutant molecules. The piezoelectric modulation of the SERS performance of the Au/Ag/CuO NW/PVDF substrate was demonstrated experimentally using rhodamine 6 G and Crystal Violet. The piezoelectric photocatalytic performance was investigated using malachite green and methylene blue. The enhanced SERS and catalytic performance can be attributed to the coupling of the piezoelectric and plasmonic effects of the CuO NW/PVDF and Au/Ag bimetals. The proposed Au/Ag/CuO NW/PVDF substrate provides a robust method that employs plasmonic and piezoelectric materials for high-performance SERS detection and piezoelectric photocatalysis.

Abstract:The recombination of photogenerated charge carriers hinder the application of photocatalyst. In this study, ternary piezoelectric photocatalyst consisting of ZnO, ZnS and MoS2 nanostructures has been synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal method, which exhibits excellent piezo-photocatalytic efficiency while degrading methylene blue (MB). The piezo-photocatalytic degradation efficiency of MB is ∼ 2.5 times of that without piezoelectricity. Moreover, the ZnO/ZnS/MoS2 nanocomposites exhibit good piezo-photocatalytic stability; after 5 cycles, the efficiency remains at ∼ 80% of the initial value. This mechanism can be attributed to the coupling effect of piezoelectricity, photocatalysis and dual heterojunctions, as verified by ESR and diagrammed by band energy structure.

Abstract:The piezoelectric effect can effectively modulate the energy band structure of the optoelectronic semiconductor and the transport behavior of carriers. Here, we propose a BaTiO3/SrTiO3 nanocomposite, and effectively enhance its photocatalytic performance through piezoelectric effect. The heterostructured BaTiO3/SrTiO3 nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning, and they were polarized by a high-voltage electric field. Under the co-excitation of ultrasonic and UV irradiation, the BaTiO3/SrTiO3 nanofibers presented excellent degradation ability of pollutants in water. The BaTiO3/SrTiO3 nanofibers can degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) dye by ~97.4% within 30 min under the combined action of ultrasonic and ultraviolet irradiation, which was 2.2 times that of pure SrTiO3 nanofibers. The piezoelectric effect provides a built-in polarization field to improve the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers. Moreover, DFT calculation results showed that piezoelectric potential can reduce the band gap width of the SrTiO3. This article provides a promising strategy for improving photocatalytic performance of nanocomposites through the use of mechanical energy.

Abstract:Electrospinning has become a universal and direct method for the preparation of nanofibers with rich porosity and large specific surface area. In this work, the Z-scheme heterojunction TiO2@2O nanofibers photocatalyst was prepared via electrospinning and showed excellent visible light catalytic degradation performance with the obtained degradation efficiency of methylene blue as high as 99% within two hours. The main active compounds for the photocatalytic degradation of the dye methylene blue were superoxide radical (•O2−) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) as well as H+. Compared to pure TiO2, following its combination with Cu2O for visible light absorption, the recombination rate of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs was reduced. After Ag doping, due to the strong surface plasmon resonance absorption effect of Ag, a red shift occurs during the pyrolysis process, showing an outstanding contribution to the effective use of sunlight. Electrochemical test results showed that a Z-scheme hybrid structure was formed in the TiO2@2O nanofibers. The photocurrent density of TiO2@2O nanofibers was 3.78 times higher than that of TiO2@Cu2O nanofibers and 47.6 times higher than that of TiO2 nanofibers. The Z-scheme heterojunction not only improved the visible light absorption efficiency, but also separated and transferred carriers, effectively preventing the recombination of photogenerated carriers. Therefore, we believe that TiO2@2O nanofibers photocatalyst advances the development of photocatalysis technology and is promising for use in a broad range of applications in environmental remediation.
