Abstract:The sulfuric acid in flue gas caused serious low temperature corrosion issues for power-plant boiler system. The exhaust gas temperature of the boiler system needs to be controlled strictly over the acid dew point, which was determined by the concentrations of SO_3 and water vapor in the flue gas. So the estimation of the SO_3 concentration in the flue gas is rather important for the acid dew point determination. Catalytic effect of some metallic minerals in coal, such as iron oxide and alumina, may be one of the important factors for the conversion from SO_2 to SO_3. So, in this work five kinds of coal ashes, four kinds of pure substances (α-Fe_2O_3, γ-Fe_2O_3, Fe_3O_4 and alumina) were employed to investigate their catalytic effect on the SO_3 formation in flue gas by a lab-scale system. The temperature range studied was 500-1000℃. The iron oxide and alumina in coal ash have evident effect on the formation of SO_3 respectively at 700℃ and 900℃. The results also shows that the catalytic abilities of the four pure oxides for the oxidation of SO_2 are in the order of α-Fe_2O_3>γ-Fe_2O_3>Fe_3O_4≈Al_2O_3. The difference may be attributed to the differences of their adsorption abilities for SO_2 and the O concentration on their surfaces.
