Abstract:We have investigated the structure and activity of electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) that had low loadings of Ir incorporated into the 2D layered MnO2, (birnessite, nominally delta-MnO2) and the 3D MnO2 (pyrolusite, beta-MnO2). The Ir-incorporated beta-MnO2 (Ir/beta-MnO2) electrocatalysts were prepared for the first time via a thermally induced phase transition of delta-MnO2 containing 16-22 wt% Ir. This phase transition of delta-MnO2 to beta-MnO2 was facilitated by the presence of Ir in the structure, as both Ir in IrO2 and Mn in beta-MnO2 could adopt a thermodynamically favored rutile structure. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of Ir/beta-MnO2 showed that the catalyst consisted of Ir substituted into the crystalline beta-MnO2 lattice. 22 wt% Ir/beta-MnO2 (60 mu g(Ir)cm(geo)(-2) exhibited an OER overpotential ( eta ) of 337 mV, lower than the eta for commercial IrO2. This eta was constant for 6 h, at 10 mA cm(geo)(-2) in 0.5 M H2SO4. EXAFS, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) showed that 22 wt% Ir/beta-MnO2 had a strained structure containing similar to 41 % Mn3+, an OER active species, along with a modified Ir bond covalency consisting of both Ir-O-Ir and Ir-O-Mn.
Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalytic Activity Enhancement over Mullite SmMn2O5 Via Interfacing with Perovskite Oxides

Abstract:Interface engineering is one of the key strategies to modify the intrinsic electronic structures of catalysts and consequently improve the electrochemical activity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the cathodes of the energy conversion devices such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, we proposed the mixed-phase mullite (A(x)Sm(1-x)Mn(2)O(5-delta), x = 0-0.5, A = Ca, Sr, Ba), prepared by facile one-step co-precipitation method, to catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra show that each mixture includes three phases, i.e., mullite SmMn2O5, O-deficient perovskite AMnO(3-delta) and MnOx. Atomic bonding interfaces are formed between SmMn2O5 and AMnO(3-delta), based on the observations of the high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Among these different mixed-phase samples, we find that BaxSm1-xMn2O5-delta/C exhibits the best ORR catalytic activity with the half-wave potential similar to 0.79 V (vs. RHE) and the highest stability over 20,000 s. This performance can be ascribed to the largest charge transfer from BaMnO2.83 to SmMn2O5. Subsequently, partial Mn4+ in mullite SmMn2O5 phase are reduced to active sites Mn3+ to achieve the e(g) unit occupancy in the interfacial depletion region. In comparison with the reactions over pure-phase mullite SmMn2O5, these transferred electrons are involved into ORR and thus accelerate the proceeding. Our work thus provides insights into designing heterogeneous compound catalysts via interfacing engineering in the applications of the electrochemical oxygen reactions.
Origin of the Superior Activity of Surface Doped SmMn2O5 Mullites for NO Oxidation: A First-Principles Based Microkinetic Study

Abstract:Using first-principles based microkinetic analysis, we conduct a comprehensive investigation on the NO oxidation process on SmMn2O5 mullite's active surface under experimentally relevant conditions. The influencing factor for NO oxidation activity is identified and Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) and Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanisms are found to contribute to the high activity of pristine SmMn2O5 mullites in high and low temperature regions, respectively. We further study the activity of surface (Ba/Sr/La) doped SmMn2O5. It is found that surface doping of Ba primarily destabilizes the nitrite (NO*) species to promote NO oxidation performance via MvK mechanism. Due to the stronger ability of O-2 (O*(2)) dissociation along the ER route, Sr and La doped mullites are predicted to have greatly enhanced reaction activity in a wide temperature region. Our study gives insight into the NO oxidation ability of pristine and surface doped SmMn2O5 that are beneficial for further optimization of mullite based catalyst performance. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. Exploring the dynamic evolution of lattice oxygen on exsolved-Mn2O3@SmMn2O5 interfaces for NO Oxidation

Abstract:Lattice oxygen in metal oxides plays an important role in the reaction of diesel oxidation catalysts, but the atomic-level understanding of structural evolution during the catalytic process remains elusive. Here, we develop a Mn2O3/SmMn2O5 catalyst using a non-stoichiometric exsolution method to explore the roles of lattice oxygen in NO oxidation. The enhanced covalency of Mn-O bond and increased electron density at Mn3+ sites, induced by the interface between exsolved Mn2O3 and mullite, lead to the formation of highly active lattice oxygen adjacent to Mn3+ sites. Near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopies show that the activated lattice oxygen enables reversible changes in Mn valence states and Mn-O bond covalency during redox cycles, reducing energy barriers for NO oxidation and promoting NO2 desorption via the cooperative Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. Therefore, the Mn2O3/SmMn2O5 exhibits higher NO oxidation activity and better resistance to hydrothermal aging compared to a commercial Pt/Al2O3 catalyst.

Abstract:Exploring the high activity of non-precious metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is necessary to reduce the cost of commercial application of fuel cells. In this work, MnO@Sm2O2CO3 (MnO@SOC) nanosheets with abundant oxygen vacancies were synthesized by solvothermal method. The nanosheets showed the best ORR performance in 0.1 M KOH solution after annealing at 500 °C. In electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results reveal that annealing reduces the number of oxygen vacancies in the catalyst, increases the lattice oxygen, further enhances the ability of transition metals to combine with oxygen atoms during the reaction. Meanwhile, the support Sm2O2CO3 is beneficial to accelerate the breaking of O–O bond, thus promoting the complete reduction of O2 in the electrocatalytic reaction. This work enriches the family of lanthanide metal catalysts and provides a new strategy for the design and improvement of heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:SmMn2O5 mullite has recently been reported to be a promising alternative to traditional Pt-based catalysts for environmental and energy applications. By performing density functional theory calculations, we have systematically investigated lattice oxygen reactivity and oxygen adsorption/dissociation/migration behaviors on low-index surfaces of SmMn2O5 mullite with different terminations. On the basis of the oxygen chemistry and thermodynamic stability of different facets, we conclude that (100)(3+), (010)(4+), and (001)(4+) are reactive toward NO oxidation via either the Mars van Krevelen (Mid() or Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanism. Concrete NO -> NO2 reaction paths on these candidate mechanisms have also been calculated. Both the (010)(4+) and (001)(4+) surfaces presented desirable activities. Bridge MnO sites on (010)(4+) surface are identified to be the most active for NO oxidation through the ER mechanism with the lowest barrier of similar to 0.38 eV. We have also identified that on all active sites considered in the current study, the rate-determining step in NO -> NO2 oxidation reaction is the NO2 desorption. Our study gives an insight into the mechanisms of NO oxidation on SmMn2O5 mullite at the atomic level and can be used to guide further improvement of its catalytic performance.

Abstract:Exploring non Pt-based catalysts with high ORR performance still remains a great challenge in the development of energy conversion and storage devices. The aim of this study is preparing a novel ORR catalyst (Sm2O3 embedded in nitrogen doped carbon by calcination processes, named as Sm2O3-CN-1100) to substitute Pt catalysts. And the results of this study show that Sm2O3-CN-1100 displays good electrocatalytic activity towards ORR, with high stability, strong tolerance to methanol crossover, and a quasi 4-electron transfer process, making it a promising Pt alternative ORR catalyst. The satisfactory ORR performance would result from the mosaic structure of Sm2O3 embedded in nitrogen doped carbon layer and the strong coupling effect between Sm2O3 and nitrogen doped carbon.
Revealing the Critical Role of the Lone Pair Electrons of Bi3+ in Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction Reaction on Mn‐Based BiMn2O5 Mullite Surface

Abstract:When the A‐site is occupied by post‐transition metal cation Bi with lone pairs in BiMn2O5, the stereochemical activity of Bi3+ significantly alters the A‐site coordination environment, promoting strong Mn─O coupling and charge transfer along the Mn3+‐O‐Mn4+ chain, which enhances catalytic performance in the oxygen reduction reaction with the higher half‐wave potential than the other mullite‐type oxides (AMn2O5, A = lanthanides, Y). There is a research gap regarding the role of lone pair electrons of post‐transition metal cations in catalysis field, yet such studies hold significant implications for expanding their applications. Herein, the role of Bi3+ ion lone pair electrons in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is elucidated using ternary mullite oxides as prototype catalysts. Among the three synthesized mullites ((Sm/Y/Bi)Mn2O5), BiMn2O5 exhibits notably superior ORR catalytic activity. Through advanced characterization techniques, including in situ Raman, in situ infrared, and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, combined with theoretical calculations, it is determined that the superior electrocatalytic performance of BiMn2O5 originates from the lone pair electrons that activate catalytic sites through stereochemical effects. Specifically, the Bi3+ lone pair electrons in the 6s orbital near Fermi level interact with O 2p orbitals, causing a shift of the oxygen ligands, and significant variance in A─O bond lengths. This structural distortion of BiO8 coordination unit directly results in a large Mn─O bond angle at the active center of BiMn2O5 and strong covalent interactions, facilitating charge transfer and refining the adsorption behavior of oxygen intermediates to achieve the overpotential of 0.25 V vs. RHE. This study provides insights into developing next‐generation catalysts by harnessing the lone pair electrons of post‐transition metal cations.

Abstract:Based on first-principles calculations and micro kinetic analysis, the reaction routes and origin of the activity of SmMn2O5 mullite for the selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia (NH3-SCO) are systematically investigated on three low-index surfaces under experimentally operating conditions. Key influencing factors and contributions of different iconic intermediate species (NH*, N2H4*, and HNO*) to the overall reaction process have been identified. In detail, Mn4+ serves as the primary active site for NH3 adsorption, while lattice oxygen participates in the dehydrogenation of NH3 on (010)4+ and (001)4+ surfaces. Furthermore, the (010)4+ surface shows both the best activity and the highest N2 selectivity at low temperatures via the synergy effect of exposed Mn???Mn dimers and the most labile O2 atoms. We further evaluate the potential catalytic performances of six A-site doped (010)4+ facets, among which La, Pr, and Nd dopings are predicted to possess better catalytic performances. Our study provides deep insights into the microscope reaction mechanisms and provides the specific optimization strategy for NH3-SCO on mullite oxides.

Abstract:The current understanding of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanism can fall into two categories: (1) the adsorbate evolving mechanism (AEM) over active metallic sites, in which all oxygen-containing intermediates originate from the electrolyte; (2) the lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM), in which the lattice oxygen in perovskite directly participates in the reaction. For more complicated metallic oxides with multiple ligand fields, these two mechanisms may fail to precisely describe the ORR process, as the local oxygen environment on the terminated surfaces of the catalyst is more variable relative to perovskites with only one type of ligand field. Herein, based on the constructed (SmMn2O5)(n) (n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 8) clusters and (001) slab model of a Mn-based mullite catalyst with a double-coordinated crystal field (Mn3+-centered square pyramid and octahedral crystal field centered on Mn4+), we discovered a new ORR mechanism, named the labile oxygen participant adsorbate evolving mechanism (LAM), via density functional theory calculations. Compared with the AEM, our proposed LAM further considers the labile oxygen participating in the reactions in the presence of intermediate OOH*, in contrast to the LOM, which does not involve OOH* formation. During the LAM, the formation of OOH* was determined to be the rate-limiting step. The moderate binding strength of the OOH* stems from the reasonable p-d orbital coupling between Mn-O bonds, trigged by the multiple oxygen coordination environments. The proposed LAM provides new insights into oxygen reactions over the more complicated catalysts with multiple ligands.
Tailoring Oxygen Reduction Reaction Pathway on Spinel Oxides via Surficial Geometrical-Site Occupation Modification Driven by the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been demonstrated as a critical technology for both energy conversion technologies and hydrogen peroxide intermediate production. Herein, an in situ oxygen evolution reaction (OER) surface evolution strategy is applied for changing the surface structure of MnCo2 O4 oxide with tetrahedral and octahedral cations vacancies to realize reaction pathway switching from 2e- ORR and 4e- ORR. Interestingly, the as-synthesized MnCo2 O4 -pristine (MnCo2 O4 -P) with the highest surficial Mn/Co octahedron occupation favors two electrons reaction routes exhibiting high H2 O2 selectivity (≈80% and reaches nearly 100% at 0.75 V vs RHE); after surface atoms reconstruction, MnCo2 O4 -activation (MnCo2 O4 -A) with the largest Mn/Co tetrahedron occupation present excellent ORR performance through the four-electron pathway with an ultrahigh onset potential and half-wave potential of 0.78 and 0.92 V, ideal mass activity (MA), and turnover frequencies (TOF) values. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the concurrent modulations of both Co and Mn by the surface reconstructions, which improve the electroactivity of MnCo2 O4 -A toward the 4e- pathway. This work provides a new perspective to building correlation of OER activation-ORR property, bringing detailed understating for reaction route transformation, and thus guiding the development of certain electrocatalysts with specific purposes.
Mechanistic Insight into the Oxygen Reduction Reaction on the Mn-N-4/C Single-Atom Catalyst: The Role of the Solvent Environment

Abstract:The design of platinum group metal (PGM)-free catalysts is crucial to the application of energy conversion due to their excellent catalytic capability. Recently, M-N-x (M = Mn, Fe, Co, etc.) single-atom catalysts embedded in graphene have been extensively studied with respect to catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Although the ORR is operated in the liquid phase, few mechanistic studies have taken the solvation effect into consideration. In the present work, we have performed ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the influence of the solvation effect on the mechanisms of ORR on MnN4-graphene by using explicit water molecules. It is found that the solvent environment can effectively promote the charge transfer from the substrate to O-2, leading to the transformation from superoxide species to peroxide species. This also makes the ORR preferably proceed via a dissociative pathway, where O-2 can be easily adsorbed on the single Mn site in the form of a "side-on" type, leading to the probable rupture of the O-O bond before being protonated. Furthermore, the solvent water molecules also raise the reactivity of protonation steps for *O and *OH intermediates by the elongation of the Mn-O bond with the assistance of the surrounding hydrogen bonds. Finally, on the basis of the calculated free-energy pathway, the liquid-phase model gives a more correct estimation for the overpotential than the gas-phase model, which is consistent with the experimental observation. The present work provides detailed information for understanding the reaction mechanisms of ORR at the surface-liquid interface on the M-Nx/C single-atom catalyst.
Atomically Dispersed Mn Atoms Coordinated with N and O Within an N-doped Porous Carbon Framework for Boosted Oxygen Reduction Catalysis.

Abstract:Developing efficient and robust catalysts to replace Pt group metals for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is conducive to achieving highly efficient energy conversion. Here, we develop a general ion exchange strategy to construct highly efficient ORR catalysts consisting of various atomically dispersed metal atoms anchored on N-doped porous carbon (M-SAs/NC) to investigate the atomic structure-catalytic activity relationship. The structure characterization results demonstrated that the achieved atomic structure varied due to the presence of different metal centers. Mn-SAs/NC consists of MnN3O1 centers, in which the Mn single atoms are stabilized by 3 N and 1 O. In contrast, the center metals in Fe-/Co-/Cu single-atom catalysts are coordinated by merely N atoms. Mn-SAs/NC delivers superior performance for the ORR with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.91 V vs. RHE in 0.1 M KOH solution, outperforming that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst and the control Fe-/Co-/Cu single-atom catalysts. Furthermore, Mn-SAs/NC also shows excellent methanol tolerance and stability up to 5000 cycles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Mn single atom catalysts with MnN3O1 centers contributed to the superior ORR performance with lower energy barriers and optimized adsorption capacity of intermediates. These findings provide insights into the design and development of specific coordinated structures of atomically dispersed catalysts to facilitate the practical applications of energy conversion.

Abstract:The development of rare earth catalysts is expected to reduce the dependence on noble metal catalysts in mobile and stationary sources. The AMn2O5 mullite oxide is a category of rare earth metal oxides for the catalytic oxidation of environmental pollutants, in which the A-site cations are the rare earth cations. The coexistence of the diverse Mn ions and the exposed Mn-Mn dimers in AMn2O5 mullite oxides contribute to the excellent catalytic performance for various catalytic reactions. Herein, the crystal structure and the identification of lattice oxygen of AMn2O5 mullite oxides have been discussed. Meanwhile, a comprehensive understanding of the activity and the thermal stability of AMn2O5 mullite oxides has been investigated. As a group of rare earth catalysts, the representing modification strategies with their advantages have been summarized to guide the rational design of next-generation mullite oxide catalysts. To gain a deeper understanding of AMn2O5 mullite oxides as heterogeneous catalysts, we have reviewed the publications in catalytic purification of vehicle exhaust and catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds, accompanied by the exploration of corresponding reaction mechanisms and the analysis of applied modification strategies. Furthermore, the perspective research direction of AMn2O5 mullite oxide catalysts has been outlined to inspire more valuable research work.
Altering oxygen binding by redox-inactive metal substitution to control catalytic activity: oxygen reduction on manganese oxide nanoparticles as a model system.

Abstract:Establishing generic catalyst design principles by identifying structural features of materials that influence their performance will advance the rational engineering of new catalytic materials. In this study, by investigating metal-substituted manganese oxide (spinel) nanoparticles, Mn3O4:M (M = Sr, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu), we rationalize the dependence of the activity of Mn3O4:M for the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on the enthalpy of formation of the binary MO oxide, ΔfH°(MO), and the Lewis acidity of the M2+ substituent. Incorporation of elements M with low ΔfH°(MO) enhances the oxygen binding strength in Mn3O4:M, which affects its activity in ORR due to the established correlation between ORR activity and the binding energy of *O/*OH/*OOH species. Our work provides a perspective on the design of new compositions for oxygen electrocatalysis relying on the rational substitution/doping by redox-inactive elements.

Abstract:The design of efficient mixed Mn-Co oxides as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts in alkaline media has been boosted nowadays. Recently, multivariant MOFs have been demonstrated as versatile precursors to construct these mixed metal oxides. Herein, we synthesized four mixed Mn-Co oxide samples via simply annealing their MIL-53 precursors with different Co/Mn molar ratios. These four samples were dominated by three kinds of Mn-Co spinel phases. The mixed Mn-Co oxides showed enhanced ORR performances compared with the single metal counterparts in alkaline media. In particular, the sample containing a pure MnCo2O4 phase exhibited the highest activity with a half-wave potential of 0.772 V (vs. RHE), only 40 mV negative compared with that of commercial Pt/C. The H2O2 yield was calculated to be below 12.1%, corresponding to the high diffusion-limited current density along with the high electron transfer number. The surface defects, active Mn4+/Mn3+ and electrochemically active surface area together affected the ORR performances of these mixed Mn-Co oxides. The present work highlights the facile controllability of divalent MIL-53 analogues for highly efficient mixed Mn-Co oxides in ORR electrocatalysis.
Sponge Effect Boosting Oxygen Reduction Reaction at the Interfaces Between Mullite SmMn2O5 and Nitrogen-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide

Abstract:Exploring the effect of interfacial structural properties on catalytic performance of hybrid materials is essential in rationally designing novel electrocatalysts with high stability and activity. Here, in situ growth of mullite SmMn2O5 on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (SMO@NrGO) is achieved for highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Combining X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, interfacial chemical interactions between Mn and substrates are verified. Interestingly, as revealed by charge density difference, the interfacial Mn-N(C) bonds display a sponge effect to store and compensate electrons to boost the ORR process. In addition, bidentate adsorption of oxygen intermediates instead of monodentate ones is observed in hybrid materials, which facilitates the interactions between intermediates and active sites. Experimentally, the hybrid catalyst SMO@NrGO exhibits a half-wave potential as high as 0.84 V, being comparable to benchmark Pt/C and higher than that of the pure SMO (0.68 V). The Zn-air battery assembled with SMO@NrGO shows a high discharge peak power density of 244 mW cm-2 and superior cycling stability against noble metals.
Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis with Epitaxially Grown Spinel MnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ and Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$

Abstract:Nanocrystalline MnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ has shown promise as a catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline solutions, but the material has been lightly studied as highly ordered thin film catalysts. To examine the role of surface termination and Mn and Fe site occupancy, epitaxial MnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ and Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ spinel oxide films were grown on (001) and (111) oriented Nb:SrTiO$_{3}$ perovskite substrates using molecular beam epitaxy and studied as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). HRXRD and XPS show synthesis of pure phase materials while STEM and RHEED analysis demonstrate island-like growth of (111) surface terminated pyramids on both (001) and (111) oriented substrates, consistent with the literature and attributed to lattice mismatch between the spinel films and perovskite substrate. Cyclic voltammograms under an N$_{2}$ atmosphere revealed distinct redox features for Mn and Fe surface termination based on comparison of MnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ and Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$. Under O$_{2}$ atmosphere, electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen was observed at both Mn and Fe redox features; however, diffusion limited current was only achieved at potentials consistent with Fe reduction. This result contrasts with that of nanocrystalline MnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ reported in the literature where diffusion limited current is achieved with Mn-based catalysis. This difference is attributed to a low density of Mn surface termination, as determined by the integration of current from CVs collected under N$_{2}$, in addition to low conductivity through the MnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ film due to the degree of inversion. Such low densities are attributed to the synthetic method and island-like growth pattern and highlight challenges in studying ORR catalysis with single-crystal spinel materials.
