Abstract:Interface engineering is one of the key strategies to modify the intrinsic electronic structures of catalysts and consequently improve the electrochemical activity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the cathodes of the energy conversion devices such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, we proposed the mixed-phase mullite (A(x)Sm(1-x)Mn(2)O(5-delta), x = 0-0.5, A = Ca, Sr, Ba), prepared by facile one-step co-precipitation method, to catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra show that each mixture includes three phases, i.e., mullite SmMn2O5, O-deficient perovskite AMnO(3-delta) and MnOx. Atomic bonding interfaces are formed between SmMn2O5 and AMnO(3-delta), based on the observations of the high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Among these different mixed-phase samples, we find that BaxSm1-xMn2O5-delta/C exhibits the best ORR catalytic activity with the half-wave potential similar to 0.79 V (vs. RHE) and the highest stability over 20,000 s. This performance can be ascribed to the largest charge transfer from BaMnO2.83 to SmMn2O5. Subsequently, partial Mn4+ in mullite SmMn2O5 phase are reduced to active sites Mn3+ to achieve the e(g) unit occupancy in the interfacial depletion region. In comparison with the reactions over pure-phase mullite SmMn2O5, these transferred electrons are involved into ORR and thus accelerate the proceeding. Our work thus provides insights into designing heterogeneous compound catalysts via interfacing engineering in the applications of the electrochemical oxygen reactions.
Tailoring Oxygen Reduction Reaction Pathway on Spinel Oxides via Surficial Geometrical-Site Occupation Modification Driven by the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been demonstrated as a critical technology for both energy conversion technologies and hydrogen peroxide intermediate production. Herein, an in situ oxygen evolution reaction (OER) surface evolution strategy is applied for changing the surface structure of MnCo2 O4 oxide with tetrahedral and octahedral cations vacancies to realize reaction pathway switching from 2e- ORR and 4e- ORR. Interestingly, the as-synthesized MnCo2 O4 -pristine (MnCo2 O4 -P) with the highest surficial Mn/Co octahedron occupation favors two electrons reaction routes exhibiting high H2 O2 selectivity (≈80% and reaches nearly 100% at 0.75 V vs RHE); after surface atoms reconstruction, MnCo2 O4 -activation (MnCo2 O4 -A) with the largest Mn/Co tetrahedron occupation present excellent ORR performance through the four-electron pathway with an ultrahigh onset potential and half-wave potential of 0.78 and 0.92 V, ideal mass activity (MA), and turnover frequencies (TOF) values. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the concurrent modulations of both Co and Mn by the surface reconstructions, which improve the electroactivity of MnCo2 O4 -A toward the 4e- pathway. This work provides a new perspective to building correlation of OER activation-ORR property, bringing detailed understating for reaction route transformation, and thus guiding the development of certain electrocatalysts with specific purposes.
Thermodynamic Stability and Intrinsic Activity of La1−xSrxMnO3 (LSM) as an Efficient Bifunctional OER/ORR Electrocatalysts: A Theoretical Study

Abstract:Perovskite oxides, being transition metal oxides, show promise as bifunctional catalysts being able to catalyze both oxygen evolution reactions (OER) and oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). These two reactions play a crucial role in energy storage and energy conversion devices. An important feature of perovskite catalyst is their ability to be tuned, as tuning can positively affect both reactivity and stability. In this study, Density Functional Theory (DFT) has been utilized to calculate both the equilibrium phase stability and the overpotentials (reactivity performance indicator of the catalysts) of La1−xSrxMnO3 (LSM) structures with different stoichiometry by introducing Mn and O vacancies for both the OER/ORR reactions. The electronic structures reveal that combined Mn and O vacancies can lead to higher catalytic activity for both OER and ORR due to the optimum filling of antibonding orbital electrons. Moreover, both O p-band centers and equilibrium phase stability plots show that LSM structures can be stable at normal OER/ORR operating conditions in an alkali medium.

Abstract:The electronic structure and geometric configuration of catalysts play a crucial role to design novel perovskite‐type catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Nowadays, many studies are more concerned with the influence of electronic structure and ignore the geometric effect, which plays a nonnegligible role in enhancing catalytic performances. Herein, we regulate the MnO6 octahedral tilting degree of LaMnO3 by modulating the concentration of Y3+, excluding the electronic effect from the valence state of manganese. Plotting the MnO6 octahedral tilting degree as a function of concentration of Y3+ produces a volcano‐shaped plot. The octahedral tilting can reduce the Mn−O covalency, generating more highly active Mn3+ and oxygen vacancies during ORR process. The specific activity has a positive correlation with octahedral tilting degree. Meanwhile, the octahedral tilting stabilizes Mn−O interactions during ORR process and promote stability. Based on experimental results and DFT calculations, octahedral tilting alters the rate‐determining step and decrease the energy barrier. Subsequent extended experiment confirmed that octahedral tilting is the key factor to affect the catalytic performances. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Abstract:Establishing generic catalyst design principles by identifying structural features of materials that influence their performance will advance the rational engineering of new catalytic materials. In this study, by investigating metal-substituted manganese oxide (spinel) nanoparticles, Mn3O4:M (M = Sr, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu), we rationalize the dependence of the activity of Mn3O4:M for the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on the enthalpy of formation of the binary MO oxide, ΔfH°(MO), and the Lewis acidity of the M2+ substituent. Incorporation of elements M with low ΔfH°(MO) enhances the oxygen binding strength in Mn3O4:M, which affects its activity in ORR due to the established correlation between ORR activity and the binding energy of *O/*OH/*OOH species. Our work provides a perspective on the design of new compositions for oxygen electrocatalysis relying on the rational substitution/doping by redox-inactive elements.

Abstract:Lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM) on perovskite oxides for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process has revealed kinetic superiority over conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM). However, feasibly enhancing the participation of lattice oxygen is still challenging. Here we designed a perovskite cobaltate (La0.6Sr0.4Co0.8Fe0.1Mn0.1O3-δ, LSCFM) nanofiber, and discovered that the co-incorporation of Fe/Mn elements significantly intensifies the involvement of lattice oxygen for OER. Compared with its mono-dopant (Fe or Mn only) counterparts, the LSCFM gives rise to higher surface oxygen vacancies (Vo) concentration and faster oxygen ion diffusion coefficient, endowing a small overpotential of 343 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and low Tafel slope of 63 mV dec−1. The strongest pH-dependent activity and metal–oxygen covalency are further unveiled on LSCFM by experimental and theoretical approaches, evidencing that the promoted OER kinetics on LSCFM predominantly stems from the formation of reactive lattice oxygen site.

Abstract:Triggering the lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism is crucial for improving oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, because it could bypass the scaling relation limitation associated with the conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism through the directly formation of oxygen−oxygen bond. High-valence transition metal sites are favorable for activating the lattice oxygen, but the deep oxidation of pre-catalysts suffers from a high thermodynamic barrier. Here, taking advantage of the Jahn−Teller (J−T) distortion induced structural instability, we incorporate high-spin Mn3+ (t2g3eg1) dopant into Co4N. Mn dopants enable a surface structural transformation from Co4N to CoOOH, and finally to CoO2, as observed by various in-situ spectroscopic investigations. Furthermore, the reconstructed surface on Mn doped Co4N triggers the lattice oxygen activation, as evidenced experimentally by pH-dependent OER, tetramethylammonium cation adsorption and on-line electrochemical mass spectrometry measurements of 18O-labelled catalysts. In general, this work not only offers the introducing J−T effect approach to regulate the structural transition, but also provides an understanding about the influence of catalyst's electronic configuration on determining the reaction route, which may inspire the design of more efficient catalysts with activated lattice oxygen.

Abstract:Spinel oxides, representing an emerging class of highly active catalysts for oxygen evolution (OER), suffer from weak covalency of metal d and oxygen p orbitals from their typical crystal structure, which generally proceeds the OER with an adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) pathway. For activating the lattice oxygen in spinel oxides to bypass the scaling relationship limitation of AEM, we herein grow the sulfate salts on the octahedral sites of spinel NiFe2O4 to introduce the Ni4+ cations and Ni vacancies in octahedral sites, which exhibit remarkable OER performance with an overpotential of 293 mV at 500 mA cm–2. Experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the formation Ni4+ cations and Ni vacancies jointly enhance the metal–oxygen hybridization and strengthen the metal–oxygen bond covalency in both NiFe2O4 and NiFeOOH phases, activating the lattice oxygen and successfully triggering the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) pathway on spinel oxides.

Abstract:The correlation between lattice oxygen (O) binding energy and O oxidation activity imposes a fundamental limit in developing oxide catalysts, simultaneously meeting the stringent thermal stability and catalytic activity standards for complete oxidation reactions under harsh conditions. Typically, strong O binding indicates a stable surface structure, but low O oxidation activity, and vice versa. Using nitric oxide (NO) catalytic oxidation as a model reaction, we demonstrate that this conflicting correlation can be avoided by cooperative lattice oxygen redox on SmMn2O5 mullite oxides, leading to stable and active oxide surface structures. The strongly bound neighboring lattice oxygen pair cooperates in NO oxidation to form bridging nitrate (NO3-) intermediates, which can facilely transform into monodentate NO3- by a concerted rotation with simultaneous O2 adsorption onto the resulting oxygen vacancy. Subsequently, monodentate NO3- species decompose to NO2 to restore one of the lattice oxygen atoms that act as a reversible redox center, and the vacancy can easily activate O2 to replenish the consumed one. This discovery not only provides insights into the cooperative reaction mechanism but also aids the design of oxidation catalysts with the strong O binding region, offering strong activation of O2, high O activity, and high thermal stability in harsh conditions.

Abstract:Determining the role of lattice oxygen in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is pivotal to understanding reaction mechanisms and predictive design of electrocatalysts based on transition metal oxides. Here, using well-defined, isotope (O-18) enriched, epitaxial LaNiO3 thin films as a model system, we show that dynamic lattice oxygen exchange occurs during OER Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry studies reveal that lattice oxygen exchange can affect the top 2 nm of the LaNiO3 films, but the surface largely remains crystalline and in the perovskite phase after OER, In addition, cyclic voltammetry and potentiostatic measurements show that OER kinetics are strongly pH-dependent, which is different from what is expected from the typical four concerted proton-electron transfer steps, most likely due to the involvement of lattice oxygen. Our findings suggest that the roles of lattice oxygen during OER and the mechanism of charge transfer in such systems need to be further studied in order to design more efficient and stable electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Taking layered perovskite oxide thin films (RP‐SrX, X= 25, 50, 75) as the model system, the critical impact of oxygen activity modulation on the switch of OER mechanism and the enhancement of intrinsic electrocatalytic activity via the combination of advanced spectroscopic techniques and density functional theory calculations is demonstrated. Developing high‐performance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts are critical for the practical application of many electrochemical energy devices. In this study, taking layered perovskite oxide thin films as the model system, it is demonstrated that the OER pathway can be effectively shifted by activating lattice oxygen, leading to strongly enhanced intrinsic activity. The OER performance of Ruddlesden‐Popper (RP)‐phase cobaltite is significantly enhanced as Sr doping at the A site increases, which is attributed to the shift of the reaction pathway from adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) to lattice oxygen‐mediated mechanism (LOM). Advanced spectroscopic techniques and density functional theory calculations reveal that the Sr dopant effectively facilitates oxygen ligand hole formation, charge transfer from the oxygen sites, and the formation and migration of oxygen vacancy, hence promoting lattice oxygen to participate in surface reactions. The results provide critical insight into the role of oxygen activity and offer a potential way for constructing highly active electrocatalysts.

Abstract:As an emerging platinum group metal-free material, metal-nitrogen-carbon (M−N−C) catalysts are promising alternatives to Pt/C catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the ORR catalytic mechanism of M−N−C catalysts is still elusive, hindering the design of outstanding M−N−C ORR catalytic materials. In this work, based on the computational hydrogen electrode (CHE) model, the oxygen-containing ligands are introduced to better explain the activity sequence of Fe/Co/MnN4 and Pt/C. It is revealed that a self-modification mechanism triggered by oxygen-containing ligands in the M−N−C materials will spontaneously adjust the too strong or too weak adsorption for intermediates in some cases, making the ORR process of four-electron transfer more likely to proceed. Electronic structure analysis shows that the essence of this self-modification mechanism is the modification of the electronic structure of MN4 sites by different ligands, and the adsorption of intermediates closely correlates with the spin moment of center metals. Furthermore, beyond the d band center theory, we introduced the integrated crystal orbital Hamilton population (iCOHP) as the ORR activity descriptor. The deeper understanding of the relationship between electronic structure and catalytic activity is helpful to grasp the key of catalytic activity and guide the design of catalytic materials.

Avoiding Sabatier’s Limitation on Spatially Correlated Pt–Mn Atomic Pair Sites for Oxygen Electroreduction

Abstract:The development of highly active and low-cost oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is crucial for the practical application of hydrogen fuel cells. However, the linear scaling relation (LSR) imposes an inherent Sabatier's limitation for most catalysts including the benchmark Pt with an insurmountable overpotential ceiling, impeding the development of efficient electrocatalysts. To avoid such a limitation, using earth-abundant metal oxides with different crystal phases as model materials, we propose an effective and dynamic reaction pathway through constructing spatially correlated Pt-Mn pair sites, achieving an excellent balance between high activity and low Pt loading. Experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate that manipulating the intermetallic distance and charge distribution of Pt-Mn pairs can effectively promote O-O bond cleavage at these sites through a bridge configuration, circumventing the formation of *OOH intermediates. Meanwhile, the dynamic adsorption configuration transition from the bridge configuration of O2 to the end-on configuration of *OH improves *OH desorption at the Mn site within such pairs, thereby avoiding Sabatier's limitation. The well-designed Pt-Mn/β-MnO2 exhibits outstanding ORR activity and stability with a half-wave potential of 0.93 V and barely any activity degradation for 70 h. When applied to the cathode of a H2-O2 anion-exchange membrane fuel cell, this catalyst demonstrates a high peak power density of 287 mW cm-2 and 500 h of stability under a cell voltage of 0.6 V. This work reveals the adaptive bonding interactions of atomic pair sites with multiple reactant/intermediates, offering a new avenue for rational design of highly efficient atomic-level dispersed ORR catalysts beyond the Sabatier optimum.

Abstract:We report a synthesis pathway in molten salts toward ligand-free nanoparticles of the layered perovskite La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 (l-LSMO) and of the pseudocubic perovskite La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (pc-LSMO). These particles are readily implemented as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts in alkaline conditions. They show high ORR selectivity for the 4-electron reduction of O2 in water. Among these two materials, pc-LSMO nanocrystals of 20 nm diameter exhibit high mass-normalized ORR activity for a perovskite material (21.4 A g–1oxide at 0.8 V/RHE) thanks to their relatively large surface area, high crystallinity, and electron mobility. These features provide pc-LSMO nanocrystals with remarkable stability compared to state-of-the-art perovskites, for instance, only a 5% increase of the overpotential at −0.05 mA cm–2oxide over 40 h. Thus, pc-LSMO nanocrystals are the most stable perovskite ORR electrocatalyst reported to date. This performance combined with high activity, high selectivity, and the absence of precious metals make La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 nanocrystals one of the best compromises for alkaline oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical process in electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems. The adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) pathway possesses the characteristics of high stability but slow catalytic kinetics. We propose that combining AEM with the lattice oxidation mechanism (LOM) pathway can potentially enhance the OER catalytic activity and stability. However, the triggering of LOM is an important challenge due to the high thermodynamic activation barrier of lattice oxygen. To solve this problem, we performed theoretical calculations and experiments which suggest that the introduction of low-valent Cu in CoOOH (CuxCo1-xOOH) could directionally modulate the local coordination environment of CoO bonds. This approach can activate lattice oxygen and generate oxygen vacancies to enhance the nucleophilic attack of *OH and directly establish OO coupling, thereby facilitating the smoothly switching from AEM to LOM pathway by increasing voltage and thus activating lattice oxygen in CuxCo1-xOOH. The switching of AEM and LOM enables CuxCo1-xOOH showing an outstanding overpotential of only 252 mV (10 mA cm-2) and durability of only 2.80 % degradation after 280h. This work provides a new way for designing efficient and stable electrocatalysts with AEM and LOM pathway switching.
A-site cationic defects induced electronic structure regulation of LaMnO3 perovskite boosts oxygen electrode reactions in aprotic lithium–oxygen batteries

Abstract:Lanthanide-based perovskite oxides have been theoretical predicted as the most prospective cathode catalysts for lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries owing to their superior chemical stability and composition adjustability. However, their inherent activity still needs further improvement and the intrinsic catalytic mechanisms are poorly understood during oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process. Herein, a facile nonstoichiometric strategy is implemented to fabricate perovskite LaMnO3-δ with abundant A-site cationic defects for the first time. The Li-O2 cell with the as-prepared La0.7MnO3-δ (L0.7MO) dual-function electrocatalyst delivers ultrahigh discharge capacity (29286 mAh g−1), extremely low overpotential (0.38 V) and superior long-term cycling durability (375 cycles at 300 mA g−1). The well-defined La defects make crucial contribution in modulating the local unsaturated coordination state of active Mn atoms and thus regulating the electronic structure of L0.7MO, which prominently enhances the oxygen redox kinetics in Li-O2 battery. Specifically, experimental results and density function theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that La vacancies conspicuously increase the covalency of Mn-O bonds, thus optimizing the eg electron filling states of the active Mn cation and enhancing the overlapping state of Mn 3d-O 2p hybridization, which promotes lattice oxygen participated redox reaction and accelerates the electron transport between the Mn cations and oxygen adsorbates (e.g., O22−, O2−). In addition, the abundant crystal defects endow the surface with strong adsorption capability for LiO2 intermediate and hence fundamentally regulate the formation and decomposition mechanism of Li2O2.

Abstract:Lattice oxygen in metal oxides plays an important role in the reaction of diesel oxidation catalysts, but the atomic-level understanding of structural evolution during the catalytic process remains elusive. Here, we develop a Mn2O3/SmMn2O5 catalyst using a non-stoichiometric exsolution method to explore the roles of lattice oxygen in NO oxidation. The enhanced covalency of Mn-O bond and increased electron density at Mn3+ sites, induced by the interface between exsolved Mn2O3 and mullite, lead to the formation of highly active lattice oxygen adjacent to Mn3+ sites. Near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopies show that the activated lattice oxygen enables reversible changes in Mn valence states and Mn-O bond covalency during redox cycles, reducing energy barriers for NO oxidation and promoting NO2 desorption via the cooperative Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. Therefore, the Mn2O3/SmMn2O5 exhibits higher NO oxidation activity and better resistance to hydrothermal aging compared to a commercial Pt/Al2O3 catalyst.
Revealing the Critical Role of the Lone Pair Electrons of Bi3+ in Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction Reaction on Mn‐Based BiMn2O5 Mullite Surface

Abstract:When the A‐site is occupied by post‐transition metal cation Bi with lone pairs in BiMn2O5, the stereochemical activity of Bi3+ significantly alters the A‐site coordination environment, promoting strong Mn─O coupling and charge transfer along the Mn3+‐O‐Mn4+ chain, which enhances catalytic performance in the oxygen reduction reaction with the higher half‐wave potential than the other mullite‐type oxides (AMn2O5, A = lanthanides, Y). There is a research gap regarding the role of lone pair electrons of post‐transition metal cations in catalysis field, yet such studies hold significant implications for expanding their applications. Herein, the role of Bi3+ ion lone pair electrons in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is elucidated using ternary mullite oxides as prototype catalysts. Among the three synthesized mullites ((Sm/Y/Bi)Mn2O5), BiMn2O5 exhibits notably superior ORR catalytic activity. Through advanced characterization techniques, including in situ Raman, in situ infrared, and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, combined with theoretical calculations, it is determined that the superior electrocatalytic performance of BiMn2O5 originates from the lone pair electrons that activate catalytic sites through stereochemical effects. Specifically, the Bi3+ lone pair electrons in the 6s orbital near Fermi level interact with O 2p orbitals, causing a shift of the oxygen ligands, and significant variance in A─O bond lengths. This structural distortion of BiO8 coordination unit directly results in a large Mn─O bond angle at the active center of BiMn2O5 and strong covalent interactions, facilitating charge transfer and refining the adsorption behavior of oxygen intermediates to achieve the overpotential of 0.25 V vs. RHE. This study provides insights into developing next‐generation catalysts by harnessing the lone pair electrons of post‐transition metal cations.
