Abstract:The fabrication of luminescent materials with lanthanide cations encapsulated within MOF pores is currently of interest because luminescent materials are used in numerous applications. In this study, a distinctive strategy via postsynthetic modification (PSM) of a novel metal-organic framework [Cu(HCPOC)(2)](n)(Cu1) (H2CPOC = 5-(40-carboxyphenoxy) nicotinic acid) and terbium ions (Tb3+) for sensing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is reported. The obtained composite Tb3+@ Cu1 emits a weak typical Tb3+ ion emission and strong ligand-centred emission. Interestingly, H2S, as a strong electron donor, can strongly enhance the luminescence of Tb-3+ through its superior affinity for Cu2+ ions. The composite Tb3+@Cu1 was designed as a luminescent turn-on ratiometric probe for H2S detection, showing high sensitivity and selectivity. The detection limit of Tb3+@Cu1 (1.20 mM) is far below that of Cu1 (13.25 mM). Moreover, a similar ligand, 5-(40-carboxyphenyl) nicotinic acid (H2CPC), was used to synthesize a fascinating structure, [Cu-5(CPC)(2)(HCPC)(2)(OH-)(4)](n) (Cu2), which was quite similar to that of the famous semiconductor MoS2, with the advantageous support of an organic linker between layers, and it showed a band gap of 2.45 eV.

Abstract:Fluorescent materials with lanthanide cations encapsulated in MOFs are currently used in numerous applications, especially in biosensors. Therefore, herein, two novel composites were designed and developed based on a Tb(iii)&Yb(iii)-functionalized Cu(ii)-coordination polymer, possessing higher thermal and water stability and fascinating fluorescence properties. The first bimetallic composite Tb@Cu-Hcbpp demonstrated broad ligand-centered emission and weak typical Tb3+ ion emission; moreover, it was used as an excellent ratiometric fluorescent sensor for the metabolic product NMF of DMF in the human body (LOD = 0.02 mu M). In addition, the Yb3+ ions were doped into Tb@Cu-Hcbpp to improve the fluorescence performance of the green Tb3+ ion emission. Among the series of Tb1-xYbx@Cu-Hcbpp samples (x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35 and 0.40), Tb0.85Yb0.15@Cu-Hcbpp showed maximum enhanced fluorescence intensity (almost 9.6 times that of the pure terbium system), but exhibited high fluorescence quenching efficiency for methylglyoxal (MGO), which could be used for the sensitive detection of MGO (LOD = 0.25 mu M). Furthermore, the developed biosensors were successfully applied for the detection of NMF and MGO in urine and serum samples, and satisfactory results were obtained, showing good potential of these biosensors in practical applications such as in disease diagnosis and biochemical research.

Abstract:As the third gasotransmitter after NO and CO, hydrogen sulfide plays essential biological roles in living systems, and developing sensitive fluorescent probe for the rapid tracking of endogenous H2S is attracting much attention. A new H2S fluorescent probe was constructed in this study based on a copper complex formed by a new NBD fluorescent ligand, in which a Cu2+ chelator was incorporated. This probe displays very weak emission owing to the emission quenching effect of Cu2+, and it is able to sense H2S by exhibiting distinct emission enhancement upon H2S addition. The S2--induced Cu2+ removal from this complex was proposed as the sensing mechanism of this Cu2+ complex-based probe. Besides the quick response, the high sensing selectivity over other anion of this probe has also been confirmed, and its detection limit was estimated to be similar to 0.2 mu mol.L-1 and the linear range is 1 similar to 20 mu mol.L-1.

Abstract:As a crucial biological gasotransmitter, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays important roles in many pathological and physiological processes. Highly selective and sensitive detection of H2S is significant for the precise diagnosis and evaluation of diverse diseases. Nevertheless, challenges remain in view of the interference of autofluorescence in organisms and the stronger reactivity of H2S itself. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a novel H2S-responsive β-diketonate-europium(III) complex-based probe, [Eu(DNB-Npketo)3(terpy)], for background-free time-gated luminescence (TGL) detection and imaging of H2S in autofluorescence-rich biological samples. The probe, consisting of a 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl (DNB) group coupled to a β-diketonate-europium(III) complex, shows almost no luminescence owing to the existence of intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer. The cleavage of the DNB group by a H2S-triggered reaction results in the recovery of the long-lived luminescence of the Eu3+ complex, allowing the detection of H2S in complicated biological samples to be performed in TGL mode. The probe showed a fast response, high specificity, and high sensitivity toward H2S, which enabled it to be successfully used for the quantitative TGL detection of H2S in tissue homogenates of mouse organs. Additionally, the low cytotoxicity of the probe allowed it to be further used for the TGL imaging of H2S in living cells and mice under different stimuli. All of the results suggested the potential of the probe for the investigation and diagnosis of H2S-related diseases.

Abstract:A novel selective fluorescent chemosensor 1 has been synthesized with a phenanthrene-fused dipyrromethene structure. Selective binding of Cu2+ by 1 results in a complex that displays high selectivity and sensitivity for H2S. The signal transduction occurs via reversible formation-separation of the Cu-1 complex and CuS. Its potential utility for biological applications was confirmed by fluorescence imaging of H2S in live cells.

Abstract:The sensing of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has become a long-time challenging task. In this work, we developed a general strategy for sensing of H2S utilizing postsynthetic modification of a nano metal organic frameworks (MOF) UiO-66-(COOH)(2) with Eu3+ and Cu2+ ions. The nano MOF Eu3+/Cu2+@UiO-66-(COOH)(2) displays the characteristic Eu3+ sharp emissions and the broad ligand-centered (LC) emission simultaneously. Because H2S can strongly increase the fluorescence of Eu3+ and quench the broad LC emission through its superior affinity for Cu2+ ions, the MOF Eu3+/Cu2+@UiO-66(COOH)(2) exhibits highly sensitive turn-on sensing of H2S over other environmentally and biologically relevant species under physiological conditions. Furthermore, this approach for fluorescent turn-on sensing of H2S is expected to extend to other water-stable MOFs containing uncoordinated -COOH.

Abstract:Luminescent chemosensors for hydrogen sulphide (H2S) are of great interest because of the close association of H2S with our health. However, current probes for H2S detection have problems such as low sensitivity/selectivity, poor aqueous-solubility or interference from background fluorescence. This study reports an ultrasensitive and time-gated "switch on" probe for detection of H2S, and its application in test paper for visualization of exhaled H2S. The complex probe is synthesized with a luminescent Tb(3+) centre and three ligands of azido (-N3) substituted pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, giving the probe high hydrophilicity and relatively fast reaction dynamics with H2S because there are three -N3 groups in each molecule. The introduced -N3 group as a strong electron-withdrawing moiety effectively changes the energy level of ligand via intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), and thus breaks the energy transferring from ligand to lanthanide ion, resulting in quenching of Tb(3+) luminescence. On addition of H2S, the -N3 group can be reduced to an amine group to break the process of ICT, and the luminescence of Tb(3+) is recovered at a nanomolar sensitivity level. With a long lifetime of luminescence of Tb(3+) centre (1.9 ms), use of a time-gated technique effectively eliminates the background fluorescence by delaying fluorescence collection for 0.1 ms. The test paper imprinted by the complex probe ink can visualize clearly the trace H2S gas exhaled by mice.

Abstract:With the merits of non-destructive, high penetration ability and minimizing autofluorescence, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probes have attracted much attention. In this paper, a NIR emission fluorescent turn-on probe THQ-L for H2S was synthesized by the knoevenagel condensation between tetrahydroquinoxaline-6- formaldehyde derivative and 2-benzothiazoleacetonitrile. THQ-L can recognize H2S through tandem reaction triggered by HS- to construct 1,4-diethylpiperazine-modified iminocoumarin-benzothiazole, which produces a strong red fluorescent signal. THQ-L displayed an excellent selectivity toward H2S, a large stokes shift (126 nm), a high signal-to-noise ratio (200-fold), the detection limits of 38.3 nM in PBS (10 mM, pH 7.4, 30% THF). The application study indicates that THQ-L can sensitively detect H2S in red wine, natural waters, living cells and can be prepared for a test paper strip for the qualitative detection of H2S.

Abstract:As one of the members of reactive sulfur species, hydrogen polysulfide (H 2 S n , n > 1) plays an important role in enzyme activity and nervous system regulations, and the sensing mechanism study is of great significance for the design of novel efficient probes. Herein, we investigated the sensing mechanism of an efficient triphenylamine-benzofuran-based probe (TBF-SS) towards H 2 S n using DFT method. The inherent fluorescence quenching of the probe is dominated by the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) as revealed by the torsional potential curve calculations. When the nitro fluorophenyl group is replaced by a hydroxyl group in the reaction with H 2 S n , the TICT is eliminated and the excited state can return to the ground state in a radiative way, leading to strong fluorescence emission.

Abstract:Merocyanines adsorbed into the mesopores of mSiO2 shell of NaYF4: 20% Yb, 2% Er, 0.2% Tm nanocrystals are demonstrated as ratiometric upconversion luminescence (UCL) probe for highly selective detection of HS(-) in living cells through inhibition of energy transfer from the UCL of the nanocrystals to the absorbance of the merocyanines. Abstract:An iminocoumarin and tetraphenylethylene compound that exhibits aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and a significant Stokes shift (Δ λ = 135 nm) in THF was created via the Knoevenagel condensation method. TPICBT could also be used as a ratiometric near-infrared fluorescent probe for the naked color identification of F − and H 2 S. It showed a large red shift (˃ 90 nm), good selectivity, and anti-interference. Test strip detection and cell imaging had both been accomplished using the probe. In addition, the probe could conveniently detect H 2 S produced during food spoilage without laboratory instruments.

Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is traditionally considered as an ecologically toxic gas, has been proven to be the third endogenous signaling gasotransmitter and plays important roles in physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Herein, we designed and synthesized a novel "turn off" fluorescent probe for the detection of hydrogen sulfide(H 2 S) in vitro. Probe A could detect H 2 S in CH 3 CN/PBS system with significant fluorescence quenching. Probe A also showed obviously aggregation- induced emission (AIE) effects. Fluorescence titration experiments revealed probe A combine with H 2 S in a 1: 1 ratio with a detection limit of 6.54 μM. Cell imaging results demonstrated the potential applicability of probe A for H 2 S detection in living cells. The supramolecular assembly of probe A and β-cyclodextrin further revealed the interaction with H 2 S.

Abstract:A novel near-infrared fluorescent probe (L) based on a 1,4-diethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-7H-pyrano[2,3-g]quinoxalin-7-one scaffold has been synthesized and characterized. Probe L displays highly selective and sensitive recognition to H2S over various anions and biological thiols with a large Stokes shift (125 nm) in THF/H2O (6/4, v/v, Tris-HCl 10 mM, pH = 7.4). This probe exhibits turn-on fluorescence for H2S through HS- induced thiolysis of dinitrophenyl ether. Confocal laser scanning micrographs of MCF-7 cells incubated with L confirm that L is cell-permeable and can successfully detect H2S in living cells.

Abstract:Novel cyanine-based fluorescent probes for the detection of H2S were developed. The probes developed are stable under physiological conditions. The water soluble fluorescent probe 2 displayed ultrafast and specific response to H2S displaying NIR fluorescence of 115-fold turn-on with the detection limit of 11 nM without assistance of organic solvent or surfactant. Cell imaging experiments indicated that probe 2 was cell-permeable and was able to detect H2S sensitively in lysosomes. Moreover, our probe was able to detect H2S intrinsically produced H2S through enzymatic/non-enzymatic biosynthetic pathway from Cys/GSH. Moreover, we applied probe 2 to detect H2S in living mice and demonstrated the fast metabolism of H2S. Thus, probe 2 shows great promise as a reporter for H2S.
