Abstract:A heterogeneous Li2TiO3/TiO2 nanocomposite was successfully prepared from anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube arrays in CH3COOLi solution by using a facile hydrothermal method. Morphology transformation from nanotubes into diamond-shaped nanoparticles can be attributed to the water-induced dissolution and recrystallization processes of the nanotube arrays in a weak acid salt solution. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction results showed that a large amount of Li2TiO3/TiO2 diamond-shaped nanoparticles were formed on the surface of the TiO2 nanotube arrays. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra indicated improved visible light absorbance. The enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting was demonstrated under UV-vis light illumination, and the photocurrent density of the electrode prepared in 0.1 M CH3COOLi was greater than that of other electrodes. The semiconductor characteristics were studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in detail. This work is expected to guide next studies to design and fabricate photo-catalysts for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting.

Abstract:Constructing hetero-junction on TiO2 is an effective way to overcome the fast charge recombination and slow charge transfer kinetics, but how to design the junction is still a significant challenge in photo-electrochemical (PEC) water splitting. In this study, a considerable improvement in PEC performance for TiO2 nanotubes was achieved following the introduction of a ternary hetero-junction through depositing ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) and Zn0.6Ca0.4In2S4 (ZCIS) in sequence via a facile hydrothermal method (TiO2/ZIS/ZCIS). The optimized photo-anode exhibited a photocurrent density of 1.07 mA cm(-2) at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), to be 3.96 and 1.25 times enhanced compared to that of TiO2 and TiO2/ZIS, respectively. Meanwhile, the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) and applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) of TiO2/ZIS/ZCIS were also increased in contrast with its counterparts. The merits of appropriate band alignment of TiO2, ZIS, and ZCIS and fewer interface defects built an internal electric field among the ternary hetero-junction, leading to an enhanced conductivity and efficient interface charge separation. These results were supported by a series of photo-electrochemical measurements. Among others, the shortened average lifetime of photo-generated electron-hole pairs from 1.51 (TiO2) to 1.17 ns (TiO2/ZIS/ZCIS) according to time-resolved photoluminescence reveals that the charge carriers generated in TiO2 would have an additional decay pathway in the hetero-structure, which benefits for the charge separation. Our strategy could be extended to many low-efficiency semiconductors for the design and synthesis of effective photo-anodes in PEC water splitting.
Facile Synthesis of Ni-doped TiO2ultrathin Nanobelt Arrays with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:Because of the high specific surface area and enhanced charge migration, TiO2 with unique belt-like nanostructures finds promising applications in various fields such as photocatalysis, dye-sensitized solar cells, gas sensors, and Li-ion batteries. In the current study, a solution combustion procedure was firstly adopted to prepare a black water-proof precursor. The black precursor interacted with H2O2 at ambient temperature, achieving a precursor solution that is capable of fabricating hydrogen titanate (H2Ti2O5·H2O) nanobelt arrays on metallic Ti substrates at 60 °C. Subsequent calcination in air at 400 °C achieved arrays of ultrathin anatase TiO2 nanobelts of ca. 2–4 nm in thickness. The addition of nickel nitrate in the combustion solution achieved the Ni-doping into the resultant TiO2 nanobelts, which did not alter the nanobelt structure but significantly reduced the band gap from 3.2 eV to 2.9 eV. When compared with the commonly alkali-hydrothermal synthesized anatase TiO2 nanobelts, the present ultrathin nanobelts exhibited much improved photocatalytic activity when utilized to assist photodegradation of rhodamine B in water. The ultrathin nanobelt structure is believed to contribute to the high specific surface area, the much reduced charge migration path, and the enhanced charge transport along the longitudinal direction. The appropriate Ni-doping further enhanced the photocatalytic performance, because of the increased light harvesting efficiency and reduced charge recombination.

Abstract:In this work, a solution combustion followed by dissolution in hydrogen peroxide is adopted to achieve a precursor for decorating anatase TiO2 nanosheets along single-crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorods, which achieves balsam-pear-like core/shell nanorod arrays with enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting. The enhanced photoelectrochemical performance is attributed to the novel nanoarchitecture, which can simultaneously offer a high surface area, enhanced light-harvesting, a rutile/anatase junction for charge carrier separation and a conductive pathway for charge carrier collection. The photoanode design can also give hints to other functional materials.
Single-crystal TiO 2 /srtio 3 Core–shell Heterostructured Nanowire Arrays for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Performance

Abstract:Vertically aligned TiO2/SrTiO3 core–shell heterostructured nanowire arrays with different shell thicknesses (5–40 nm) were fabricated on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrate via a hydrothermal process. Microstructural characterization demonstrated that the TiO2 nanowires were uniformly coated by the single-crystal SrTiO3 shell, where continuous and large-area interface could be clearly observed. By this means, significantly enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting properties (0.78 mA·cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE) were successfully realized in well-designed sample (with a shell thickness of 5–10 nm) compared with those of pristine TiO2 (0.38 mA·cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE). The improvement of photoelectrochemical properties was attributed to the improved charge injection and charge separation, which are calculated by the results of water oxidation and sulfite oxidation measurements. Based on these results, a mechanism was proposed that SrTiO3 shell acted as an electron–hole separation layer to improve the photocurrent density. On the other hand, the sample with an over-thick SrTiO3 shell (20–40 nm) exhibited slightly reduced photoelectrochemical properties (0.66 mA·cm−2), which could be explained by the increase of the recombination rate in the thicker SrTiO3 shell. This work provided a facile strategy to improve and modulate the photoelectrochemical performance of heterostructured photoanodes.

Abstract:Photocatalysis provides a cost effective method for both renewable energy synthesis and environmental purification. Photocatalytic activity is dominated by the material design strategy and synthesis methods. Here, for the first time, we report very mild and effective photo-deposition procedures for the synthesis of novel Fe2 O3 -TiO2 nanocomposites. Their photocatalytic activities have been found to be dramatically enhanced for both contaminant decomposition and photoelectrochemical water splitting. When used to decompose a model contaminant herbicide, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), monitored by both UV/Vis and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis, 10% Fe-TiO2 -H2 O displayed a remarkable enhancement of more than 200 % in the kinetics of complete mineralisation in comparison to the commercial material P25 TiO2 photocatalyst. Furthermore, the photocurrent is nearly double that of P25. The mechanism for this improvement in activity was determined using density functional theory (DFT) and photoluminescence. These approaches ultimately reveal that the photoelectron transfer is from TiO2 to Fe2 O3 . This favours O2 reduction which is the rate-determining step in photocatalytic environmental purification. This in situ charge separation also allows for facile migration of holes from the valence band of TiO2 to the surface for the expected oxidation reactions, leading to higher photocurrent and better photocatalytic activity.
Photo-thermal Coupling Water Splitting over Fe-doped TiO2 with Various Nanostructures

Abstract:Oxygen vacancy (V-O) is an important part of the defect engineering. The direct thermal application of reductive photo-induced V-O has been regarded as an effective way for solar utilization in the field of hydrogen production from pure water splitting. Based on TiO2 nanomaterials synthesized by various preparation methods, the performance of pure water splitting in photo-thermal coupling was tested on a variety of topography TiO2 samples and its promoted form with Fe ions doping. The high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) were utilized for the observation of crystal characteristics. The diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical characterization were applied to compare the materials properties. Moreover, the whole water splitting reaction pathway was performed via density functional theory (DFT). Compared with hydrothermal nanosheets and nanowires, the nanoparticles prepared by sol-gel own abundant defects, resulting in a decline in hydrogen yield. To increase the photo-induced V-O generation during the photo reaction, which takes the highest energy barriers, the Fe doping was introduced into the nanomaterials, with the advantages of extended photoresponse, enhanced electron-hole pairs separation, prolonged carriers lifetime and decreased impedance. Meanwhile, defects in nanomaterials promote effective doping of Fe atoms, the average hydrogen yield on Fe-doped TiO2 nanoparticles is 9.73 mu mol/g in photo-thermal coupling reaction, which is almost 13 times to the bare TiO2. The comparison and modification of nano TiO2 with various morphologies provide a new approach for the solar functional materials.

Abstract:As one of the important photocatalysts for solving the energy crisis and environmental pollution, semiconductor titanium dioxide (TiO2) has attracted widespread attention and been widely studied due to its advantages, including pollution-free nature, nontoxicity, and high photoelectric conversion efficiency. It has essential applications in the photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes and clean production of hydrogen. However, due to the wide bandgap of TiO2 and rapid photoinduced electron-hole recombination, the light utilization rate is under expectation. It was demonstrated that molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and TiO2 nanocomposites with excellent photocatalytic performance showed pronounced catalytic synergistic effects. This endows TiO2/MoS2-based nanocomposites with much better performance, expanding their application prospects in the fields of photocatalysis and rechargeable lithium/sodium-ion batteries. In this work, several typical preparation methods of TiO2/MoS2 hybrid materials are introduced in detail, including hydrothermal methods, atomic layer deposition methods and mechanochemical synthesis methods. The enhancement mechanisms of photocatalysts are also discussed. In addition, this work summarizes the new design schemes developed in recent years and provides various comprehensive construction strategies. Finally, the applications of TiO2/MoS2 composites in solar fuels, ion batteries, degradation of organic molecules, reduction of CO2 and multifunctional optical sensors are presented.

Abstract:The slow kinetics of water oxidation has become a challenge for photoelectrochemical hydrogen production . Here, a novel organic-inorganic integrated photoanode system was constructed by using MIL-53(Fe) formed during the in-situ etching process as a cocatalyst to modify Ti–Fe 2 O 3 . The photocurrent density of Ti–Fe 2 O 3 /MIL-53(Fe) reaches 2.5 mA/cm 2 , 10 times that of bare Ti–Fe 2 O 3 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, and the water oxidation photocurrent onset potential shifts 105 mV negatively. Ti–Fe 2 O 3 /MIL-53(Fe) reaches 52% at 390 nm for IPCE. The excellent photoelectrochemical performance is due to iron oxide clusters boost charge separation and transfer, in-situ etching exposes more reactive sites, and the tight connection reduces interfacial resistance , which greatly accelerates the surface kinetics of Ti–Fe 2 O 3 . The in-depth understanding is provided for in-situ modification of photoanodes by metal organic frameworks in this work.

Abstract:Enhancing the performance of TiO2 material in lithium-ion battery application is a promising objective. According to the photo-electrochemical activity of TiO2, herein we develop a novel and facile photo-deposition strategy to synthesize Co3O4/TiO2 composites by using TiO2 nanotubes as substrate material and ultraviolet light as energy source. The physical characterizations indicate that after the proposed procedures small-sized Co3O4 nanoparticles are well deposited on the surface of TiO2 nanotubes to form a Co3O4 layer that distributed all through the tubes. As anode materials for lithium storage, the as-synthesized Co3O4/TiO2 nanotube composites exhibit enhanced performance with higher capacity and rate capability at various test current densities than bare TiO2 nanotubes. The improved performance of composite products is mainly attributed to the coating of Co3O4 layer which can not only increase the conductivity of TiO2, but also could contribute to the overall reversible capacity during charge/discharge.

Abstract:TiO2 is widely considered as one of the promising materials to fulfill photoelectrochemical water splitting requirements for its low cost, nontoxicity, photostablity, and strong photo oxidation ability. Several synthesis approaches have been reported to fabricate TiO2 nanostructures, including template assisted hydrothermal, anodization, and sol-gel. Among them, anodization method is capable of producing highly ordered, well aligned TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) with controlled diameters and tube length. The unidirectional tubular structure provides the charge transport channels from electrolyte/photoanode interface to conductive substrate. The intrinsic band gap of TiO2 (3.2eV for anatase and 3.0eV for rutile), however, limits its optical absorption only within UV region. The rapid recombination rate of photo-excited electrons and holes also severely hinders its practical application.1 Many approaches have been developed to promote the photo response of TiO2 in visible light region. For example, by hetero coupling, the holes and electrons can be photo excited from the narrow-gap semiconductor and separated effectively, which significantly promotes the visible light response. To form hetero coupling, cobalt oxide, a typical P-type semiconductor with band gap of ~2.1eV is chosen. Recent report shows cobalt oxide coupled with TiO2 exhibit could enhance the photo oxidation activity under visible light illumination.2 CoOx/TiO2 nanoparticles also show great photocatalytic activity on water splitting. Here we report the formation of CoOx/TiO2 NTs hetero coupling by atomic layer deposition (ALD). ALD is ultrathin film deposition technique to have sub-nanometer control of film thickness. As a promising method to passivate and modify photoanode,3 ALD could form chemical bonds on substrate and operate at a relatively low temperature. We will show that by uniformly depositing a layer of cobalt oxide film onto the TiO2 nanotubes, CoOx/TiO2 NTs system exhibits one fold improvement on photocurrent response under visible light illumination compared with pristine TiO2 NTs, and about two times the efficiency of CoOx/TiO2 synthesized via wet-chemistry method. Abstract:TiO2/Ti3C2 nanocomposites with high photocatalytic activity were successfully fabricated via a hydrothermal process. The microstructure and phase composition of these composites were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The photocatalytic performance of pure TiO2 and TiO2/Ti3C2 nanocomposites were evaluated by photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) under ultraviolet light irradiation. Photodegradation tests results revealed that TiO2/Ti3C2 have much better photocatalytic activity than pure TiO2 nanomaterials. And it was suggested that the TiO2/Ti3C2 exhibited more effective electron–hole separation than pure TiO2 and Ti3C2 under UV light irradiation.
Vertically FeNi layered double hydroxide/TiO2 composite for synergistically enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting

Abstract:Non-precious oxygen evolution electrocatalysts have been attracting considerable attention because of their promising potentials in improving the efficiency of water splitting. Among all the candidates, FeNi electrocatalysts show the relatively high electrocatalytic performances, however, it still remains lack for the optimization of their structure and component, and in particular the heterogeneous synergistic effect by integrating with TiO2 photocatalyst. Here, we prepared FeNi electrocatalysts with tunable Fe/Ni composition on TiO2 film by a simple electrodeposition method and studied their microstructure and electrochemical performance. It is found that FeNi3/TiO2 composite composed of vertically layered double hydroxide (LDH), presents ultrathin layer thickness of 280 nm and open-channeled pore architecture, thus contributing to a high density of active sites, promoting the exchange of ions and electrons, and synergistically suppressing the electron-hole recombination. The optimized FeNi3/TiO2 composite exhibits an overpotential of 280 mV at current density of 10 mA/cm2 and a small Tafel slope of 34 mV/dec. Moreover, the optimized FeNi3/TiO2 composite shows no obvious current drop during the stability test for 8000 s. First-principles calculations demonstrate a synergistic effect of FeNi3/TiO2 composite with the smallest theoretical overpotential based on the density functional theory (DFT) simulations.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient and stable earth-abundant photoanode materials for photoelectrochemical water splitting is crucial for a sustainable energy economy. Being earth-abundant, 2D Ti3C2 MXenes have recently emerged as promising candidate for efficient photocatalytic performances. However, pristine Ti3C2 and its composites suffer from poor electron–hole separation and fail to prevent the spontaneous recombination process due to the poor conductivity derived from the serious agglomeration of MXene sheets during processing. Therefore, suitable heterojunction engineering of the MXene based composites is required for their efficient photocatalytic performances. Hence, in this work, we have developed a Ti3C2-TiO2 and octahedron-shaped, nanosized Zinc titanate (Zn2TiO4) based ternary nanocomposite with optimized composition via a simple process of alkalization followed by hydrothermal. As-synthesized Ti3C2-TiO2/Zn2TiO4 (1:0.5) nanocomposite shows a 3.7 fold augmentation in photocurrent density as compared to alkali treated Ti3C2-TiO2 at a potential of 0.9 V vs Ag/AgCl resulted due to the facile charge transfer evidenced from its impedance analysis having lowest charge transfer resistance. Furthermore, the Mott-Schottky measurements reveal that the as-synthesized nanocomposites possess n-type semiconductivity and the charge carrier concentration of Ti3C2-TiO2/Zn2TiO4 (1:0.5) is almost 5.2 times higher than that of alkali-treated Ti3C2-TiO2. This work may inspire more excellent work on developing MXenes-based photoanodes.

Integrating Bi2MoO6 Nanoflakes into TiO2 Photoanode for Efficient Charge Separation in Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Achieving highly effective water splitting based on conventional TiO2 photoanode is challenging due to its poor visible light response and low electrical conductivity. Herein, a Bi2MoO6/TiO2 heterojunction with a suitable band structure is constructed to broaden light absorption and accelerate oxidation kinetics. In particular, the highest photocurrent density (0.35 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE) of Bi2MoO6/TiO2 is 2.1 times higher than that of pristine TiO2. The integrated Bi2MoO6 nanoflakes enrich more reactive sites and charge transfer tunnels. The surface hole injection efficiency and electron lifetime of Bi2MoO6/TiO2 are 1.4 and 5.5 times larger than those of bare TiO2, respectively. Additionally, the activation energy and charge transfer resistance of Bi2MoO6/TiO2 electrodes are decreased remarkably, dramatically promoting the separation of electron-hole pairs. This work offers a novel strategy for TiO2-based heterojunction with great potential for application in photoelectrochemical water splitting.
Composites Based on Electrodeposited WO3 and TiO2 Nanoparticles for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Photoelectrochemically active WO3 films were fabricated by electrodeposition from an acidic (pH 2), hydrogen-peroxide-containing electrolyte at −0.5 V vs. SCE. WO3-TiO2 composites were then synthesized under the same conditions, but with 0.2 g/L of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (⌀ 36 nm), mechanically suspended in the solution by stirring. After synthesis, the films were annealed at 400 °C. Structural characterization by XRD showed that the WO3 films exhibit the crystalline structure of a non-stoichiometric hydrate, whereas, in WO3-TiO2, the WO3 phase was monoclinic. The oxidation of tungsten, as revealed by XPS, was W6+ for both materials. Ti was found to exist mainly as Ti4+ in the composite, with a weak Ti3+ signal. The efficiency of the WO3 films and composites as an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) photo-electrocatalyst was examined. The composite would generate approximately three times larger steady-state photocurrents at 1.2 V vs. SCE in a neutral 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte compared to WO3 alone. The surface recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs was characterized by intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS). Photogenerated charge transfer efficiencies were calculated from the spectra, and at 1.2 V vs. SCE, were 86.6% for WO3 and 62% for WO3-TiO2. Therefore, the composite films suffered from relatively more surface recombination but generated larger photocurrents, which resulted in overall improved photoactivity.

Novel Tio2-Pt@Sio2 Nanocomposites With High Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:This article reports a facile and controllable two-step method to construct TiO2-Pt@SiO2 nanocomposites. TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), with small size and high surface energy, were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction process. The TiO2-Pt@SiO2 nanocomposites were fabricated by a reverse micro-emulsion method. SiO2 shell coated NPs were adopted for further photocatalytic reaction. Because of their small size and high surface energy, TiO2@SiO2 and TiO2-Pt@SiO2 nanocomposites show higher photocatalytic activity than commercial Degussa P25. Compared with TiO2@SiO2, TiO2-Pt@SiO(2)nanocomposites have improved photocatalytic activity due to the Pt induced spatial separation of electrons and holes. The silica shells not only maintain the structure of the nanocomposites but also prevent their aggregation during the photocatalytic reactions, which is highly important for the good durability of the photocatalyst. This strategy is simple, albeit efficient, and can be extended to the synthesis of other composites of noble metals. It has opened a new window for the construction of hetero-nanocomposites with high activity and durability, which would serve as excellent models in catalytic systems of both theoretical and practical interest.
An Efficient Photocatalyst with Pt/TiO2@CdS/Co3O4 Hollow Core–Shell Nanostructure for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Photocatalytic split water attracts tremendous research interest because of its outstanding advantages in generating clean energy. Therefore, this work reports the synthesis of Pt/TiO 2 @CdS/Co 3 O 4 hollow core–shell nanocomposites using a hard template method. The resulting material was then used for photo-induced spontaneous water splitting. The rationally designed hollow core–shell structure of this material not only enhanced the light collection capacity but also improved the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers owing to its TiO 2 /CdS heterojunction. The presence of the Pt and Co 3 O 4 catalysts in our novel material resulted in 63.2 and 29.7 μ mol/g of H 2 and O 2 yields, respectively. Our work provides insights into conversion efficiency improvements during visible light-assisted catalytic water splitting.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) interconnected porous architectures are expected to perform well in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting due to their high specific surface area as well as favourable porous properties and interconnections. In this work, we demonstrated the facile fabrication of 3D interconnected nanoporous N-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2 network) by annealing the anodized 3D interconnected nanoporous TiO2 (TiO2 network) in ammonia atmosphere. The obtained N-TiO2 network exhibited broadened light absorption, and abundant, interconnected pores for improving charge separation, which was supported by the reduced charge transfer resistance. With these merits, a remarkably high photocurrent density at 1.23V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) was realized for the N-TiO2 network without any co-catalysts or sacrificial reagents, and the photostability can be assured after long term illumination. In view of its simplicity and efficiency, this structure promises for perspective PEC applications.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical water oxidation mechanism of Ti–Fe2O3/NH2–MIL–53(FeCo) composite photoanode. α–Fe2O3 is a promising photoanode that can be used for solar‐driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, due to low carrier separation efficiency and slow water oxidation kinetics, the PEC performance of Ti–Fe2O3 is still severely hindered. Here, a novel inorganic–organic hybrid composite photoanode is prepared by depositing NH2–materials of institute Lavoisier (MIL)–53(FeCo) cocatalyst on the surface of Ti–Fe2O3 using solvothermal method. In the results, it is shown that the Ti–Fe2O3/NH2–MIL–53(FeCo) photoanode has a high photocurrent density (3.0 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which is 5.1 times that of bare Ti–Fe2O3, and the initial potential of water oxidation also undergoes a negative change of about 100 mV. The separation efficiency of Ti–Fe2O3/NH2–MIL–53(FeCo) is significantly enhanced, and the charge injection efficiency increases from 17.6% to 68% at 1.23 V versus RHE. In the further research, it is suggested that the excellent PEC performance of Ti–Fe2O3/NH2–MIL–53(FeCo) may be attributed to an increase in carrier density, prolonged carrier recombination time, and an increase in exposed reactive sites. In this study, a new understanding for the design of Ti–Fe2O3 photoanodes with superior PEC performance based on metal organic framework modification is provided.
