Abstract:Yb/Er doped hexagonal beta-NaLnF(4) (Ln = Gd, Y, Lu) are regarded as the most efficient green upconversion (UC) materials. Unfortunately, beta-NaLnF(4) is quite difficult to grow as monocrystal owing to cubic-to-hexagonal phase transition during cooling. As an alternative, herein a nanocrystallization controllable strategy to synthesize monodisperse whole-family beta-NaLnF(4) (from NaLaF4 to NaLuF4) embedded bulky glass ceramics is reported. A series of structural and spectroscopic characterizations indicate that Na content and Al/Si ratio are the most important factors to determine phase-selective NaLnF(4) crystallization in the aluminosilicate oxyfluoride glasses. Impressively, such nanocomposites are evidenced to be ideal hosts for upconversion luminescence of Yb3+/Er3+ dopants and as the proof-of-concept experiments, their applications in a random laser and incoherent LED-excitable upconverting device as emitting media are demonstrated. It is expected that this study will provide a deep understanding for controllable crystallization in glass and extend the practical applications of glass ceramics in optoelectronic fields.

Abstract:This paper presents the absorption spectrum, fluorescent spectrum and scattering characteristics of Nd:YAG single-crystal optical fiber (SCF). The measured results indicate that the Nd:YAG SCF grown by means of the LHPG method is in agreement with the bulk crystal in the properties such as absorption spectrum, and fluorescent spectrum. The defects and diameter variations of the SCF are also analyzed.

Abstract:A Nd3+-doped Y2.8ScAl4.2O12 (Nd:YSAG) single crystal was grown successfully via the Czochralski technology. The crystal structure and crystalline quality of the as-grown Nd:YSAG crystal were determined by the X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray rocking curve, respectively. By X-ray fluorescence analysis, the effective segregation coefficient of Nd3+ is calculated to be 0.33 in the YSAG crystal. Using the chemical etching method, the dislocation density on the (111)-crystalline face is obtained to be about 3.45 × 102 cm−2. The large absorption cross-section (2.95 × 10−20 cm2) and wide FWHM (9.8 nm) around 808.8 nm imply a high LD pumping efficiency. The high emission cross-section (3.53 × 10−20 cm2) at 1336.3 nm and long fluorescence lifetime of Nd3+ ions (286.20 μs) are beneficial to realize laser output. Thereby, all the results indicate that the Nd:YSAG crystal is a potentially new gain material pumped by a LD for near-infrared laser at 1336.3 nm.

Abstract:Near-infrared laser radiation based on Nd3+-doped yttrium ortho-aluminate (Nd:YAlO3, Nd:YAP) has garnered significant interest regarding solid-state lasers. Nevertheless, the crystal microstructures and electronic characteristics of Nd:YAP are still unclear, and the unique physical properties underlying its enormous applications require clarification. In this study, we conducted first-principles calculations at the atomic level to explore the electronic properties and mechanical characteristics of both pure YAP and Nd3+-doped YAP. The results suggest that the substitution of the Y3+ ion site with the Nd3+ impurity ion induces slight structural distortion in the YAP crystal lattice. An impurity band emerges between the original conduction band and the valence band, attributed to the 4f orbital of the Nd3+ ion, exerting a substantial influence on the narrowing of the band gap. Through an analysis of the mechanical characteristics of both pure YAP and Nd:YAP, we conclude that the incorporation of Nd3+ atoms leads to a reduction in the mechanical properties of YAP to a certain extent. Our study can serve as a foundational data source for investigations into material performance, especially for the application of Nd:YAP in solid-state laser systems.

Abstract:Nd3+ doped YAP has attracted considerable attention because it shows promise for use in solid-state lasers and medical care. However, the microstructures underlying the electronic features with various dopant concentrations are still unclear. In this study, we carried out first-principles calculations on the microstructures of Nd x Y 1 − x AlO3 crystals (x = 0.25, 0.125, 0.0625 and 0.03125). Based on density functional theory and the particle swarm optimization algorithm, the four ground state structures for each concentration of Nd x Y 1 − x AlO3 were shown to adopt monoclinic phases. The peak values of the diffraction angles showed distinct shifts, and the subshell orbitals that most affected the lower bands varied as the dopant concentration changed. The validities of these structures were confirmed by the good agreement between the calculated X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and the experimental patterns. Moreover, the electronic band structures of Nd x Y 1 − x AlO3 were meticulously analysed. The conduction bands of the four structures all broke through the Fermi levels, suggesting that the doped systems were all conductors. By calculating the crystal structure electron localization function (ELF), we determined that both the Nd-O and Y-O bonds in Nd x Y 1 − x AlO3 are ionic. These results fill the small gaps in microstructure research and reveal the commonalities and individualities of the physical features formed in Nd x Y 1 − x AlO3 with different dopant concentrations, which will provide inspiration for designing luminescent materials in the future.

Abstract:Detailed polarized spectral properties of a 0.685 at. % Nd3+:Sr3Y2(BO3)(4) crystal grown by the Czochralski method have been investigated, including the absorption cross section, the emission cross section, and the fluorescence lifetime. The anisotropy of the spectral properties in different polarized directions was discussed thoroughly. The absorption and emission spectra of Nd3+ are found to be in-homogeneously broadened due to its internal disordered lattice. Additionally, the CW laser operation at 1.06 mu m was also demonstrated for the first time. The maximum output power of 905 mW was achieved, with corresponding optical conversion efficiency of 10.8% and slope efficiency of 12.8%. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A detailed study structure and luminescence properties of Nd3+: Ga2O3-Al2O3-PbO-CaO laser glasses was conducted. The network structure was mainly dominated by Al (IV) or Ga (IV). With the increase of the Al2O3 content, the Al (IV) content increases, whereas the Ga (IV) content decreases. Hyperfine sublevel correlation (HYSCORE) spectra reveal 27Al and 207Pb weak hyperfine coupling, which indicates that these nuclei are in the second- or higher-order Nd3+ coordination sphere. No 69Ga or 71Ga signals can be detected in the three-pulse electron spin echo envelope modulation (3P-ESEEM) and HYSCORE spectra. For germanate glass, the local environment of the Nd3+ ions is characterized by the Pb ligand, for aluminum gallium glasses, the Nd3+ ions are surrounded by Al3+ and Pb2+ ions, and for aluminum glass, Nd3+ ions are mainly surrounded by 27Al cations. The change in the structure and in the local environment of Nd3+ ions results in a change in the luminescence properties of glasses.

Abstract:Nd3+ and Yb3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 crystals with the size 25 mm×100 mm were grown by the Czochralski method.The habit of as-grown crystal was discussed and the phase of crystal was analyzed by XRD.The characteristics of thermal expansion were measured and the coefficient of thermal expansion of c axis was twice as much as a axis.Polarized absorption spectra,fluorescence spectra,and fluorescence decay curve were measured at room temperature.The standard and modified Judd-Ofelt theories have been performed to analyze the absorption spectra and the spectroscopic parameters.Results show that Yb3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 crystals have relatively large luminescent quantum efficiency.The Nd3+∶NaY(WO4)2 crystal was made into laser stick and and the laser experiment was performed using a xenon flash lamp as a pump source.Maximum pulse energy of 786 mJ with a repetition rate of 1Hz has been obtained.A maxinum output power of 87 mW and the double-frequency conversion efficiency is more than 25%,slope efficiency is 7.98%.

Abstract:On the basis of both the crystal-field theory and the Judd-Ofelt method, the relative intensities and polarization characteristics of the individual transitions between the manifolds 4F3/2 to 4I11/2 and 4F3/2 to 4I9/2 for Nd3+ ions in an NdAl3(BO3)4 crystal were studied by experimental fluorescence spectroscopy and branching ratios. The theoretical results are in agreement with those of laser and fluorescence experiments. In this study, the crystal-field wavefunctions were obtained by fitting the Stark energy sublevels with a constraint condition imposed on the electrostatic ratios of the crystal-field parameter belonging to the same order of k, in a similar manner to that proposed by the present authors previously and referred to as the quasi-three-parameter method. It was shown that the minimum obtained in this way was the only solution corresponding to physical reality.

Abstract:We investigate the role of the Nd3+ content on the PA characteristics in NdxY1.00-xAl3(BO3)4 particles with x ranging from 0.05 to 1.00. It is known that the replacement of Y3 by Nd3+ into the YAl3(BO3)4 crystalline structure can introduce strong modifications of the lattice properties as well as in the photoluminescence characteristics, such as luminescence concentration quenching and broadening of spectral lines. Despite that, we observe, for low x (<= 0.20) an energy-looping preceding the PA-like that ensues for x >= 0.40. It is associated to the proximity among the Nd3+ ions, fundamental to the electric dipole-electric dipole interaction responsible for the Nd3+ energy transfer [4F3/2, 4I9/2] - [4I15/2, 4I15/2]. We discuss the present results focusing on emerging technologies with development of ultra-sensitive thermal sensors, and super-resolution imaging thanks to the giant nonlinearities in the input-output power dependences.

Abstract:The relationship between the luminescence properties and the glass structure of Nd3+-doped CaO-Al2O3-(B2O3, SiO2, or Ga2O3) glasses are investigated. The luminescence properties of CaO-Al2O3-B2O3 system are twice as much as that of the CaO-Al2O3-(SiO2 or Ga2O3) system. The glass structure and the coordination environment of the Nd3+ ions were investigated using nuclear magnetic resonance, Raman and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. All Al, Ga, and Si atoms are four coordinated. The B atoms have three- and four-coordinated boron units, however, most of them are three coordinated. The hyperfine sublevel correlation spectra reveal that the Al and B nuclei are in the coordination sphere of Nd3+ ions for aluminoborate glasses; however, only 27Al signals could be observed for aluminosilicate and aluminogallate glasses. Owing to the increased number of AlO4-BO3 connections and 11B nuclei around the Nd3+ ions, B has a significant effect on the luminescence properties of the Nd3+ ions. The increase in GaO4 or SiO4 does not change the three dimensional-tetrahedral network, and the coordination environment of Nd3+ ions varies slightly. Thus, the effect of Ga2O3 and SiO2 on the luminescence properties of the Nd3+ ions is not as great as that of B2O3.

Abstract:The Y1−xBO3:Ndx nanoparticles have been prepared by a mild hydrothermal method and luminescence properties in the NIR of Y1−xBO3:Ndx nanoparticles have been investigated. The Y1−xBO3:Ndx nanoparticles with 0–15mol% Nd3+ were found to be isostructural with YBO3 crystal. The preferential nucleation and growth of Y1−xBO3:Ndx nanoparticles along a certain plane can be observed and the dopants of Nd3+ ions would help to weaken the selectivity of the growth of Y1−xBO3:Ndx nanoparticles. The emission spectrum in the NIR of Y1−xBO3:Ndx nanoparticles consisted of a few narrow, sharp lines corresponding to the 4F3/2→4I11/2 and 4F3/2→4I13/2 transitions of Nd3+ ions when pumped with 800nm laser radiation. The luminescence intensity of Y1−xBO3:Ndx nanoparticles increased remarkably with the increase in the doping concentration of Nd3+ ions and reached a maximum at approximately 10mol%.

Abstract:BaLaGa3O7:Nd (BLGO:Nd) has been investigated as a laser crystal material for about three decades. In the present work, the luminescene mechanism of BLGO:Nd is clarified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Structural optimization was first performed on the constructed supercell to obtain the equilibrium, geometry. On the basis of the optimized crystal, the electronic structures of the BLGO hoot (without and with single defects) and the BLGO:Nd phosphor (without and with neighboring defects) were comprehensively investigated. Three important features are revealed by theoretical analyses. First, single defects in BLGO have little effect on the light emission, although the impurity levels appeared Within the band gap. Second, luminescence can be realized by the, introduction of Nd ions: Calculations of optical properties demonstrated that parity-forbidden transitions among the 4f levels are partially allowed because the mixing of 4f and 5d configurations occurs at higher empty 4f levels. It is thus clear that the electronic transitions between occupied 4f and empty 4f-5d states are electric-dipole-allowed. Therefore, light emission in BLGO:Nd canoe achieved in the electronic transition process of Nd 4f electrons -> empty 4f-5d levels -> empty 5d levels -> Nd 4f levels. The neighboring intrinsic defects play only an auxiliary role in prolonging the decay time. Third, co-doping of Tb in BLGO:Nd is considered to be beneficial to luminescence in theory because of its shallow to deep distribution of impurity orbitals in the band gap. Therefore, BLGO:Nd co-doped with other lanthanide ions will offer guidelines in the search for the best luminescent materials.

Abstract:Yb3+-doped transparent glass ceramics containing cubic SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared by heat treating the precursor fluorosilicate glass. The precipitated crystals increase in size and the crystallinity decreases with increasing Yb3+ doping level. With high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction, the nano-sized nature of SrF2 was clearly observed. Owing to a significant change in the crystal-field effects with Yb3+ enriching in the SrF2 phase, the glass ceramics present near infrared emission with large bandwidths and long lifetimes, simultaneously. This indicates the glass ceramics have potential application in the efficient IR lasers pumping by InGaAs diodes. The glass ceramics can also emit blue upconversion luminescence, deriving from Yb3+ pairs' cooperative luminescence. It suggested that Yb3+ can be an efficient upconversion sensitizer for other rare earth ions. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Crystal-field Analysis of the Energy Levels and Spectroscopic Characteristics of Nd3+in YVO4

Abstract:Based on the method previously proposed by the authors, the crystal-field analysis and investigation of the polarization and relative intensities of transitions between the sublevels F-4(3/2) to I-4(13/2), I-4(11/2) and I-4(9/2) in Nd3+:yVO4 crystals have been performed, in which the Nd3+ ions occupy positions with point symmetry D2d. The predicted polarization characteristics of all the emission lines under discussion are in complete agreement with those observed in experiments by other authors, and the emission lines with highest or comparatively high calculated intensities correspond to the laser emission lines that have been realized. In these calculations, the effect of seventh-order odd crystal field on the emission intensities was first omitted and then estimated by the method suggested by Judd in 1962. It turned out that this effect should be taken into account explicitly and cannot be completely made up only by multiplying a factor suggested by Judd. However, the simple method introduced can be seen as useful in the study of new laser crystals.

Abstract:An Nd3+-doped Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)(8) crystal with dimensions up to 32 x 20 x 14 mm(3) has been grown by the TSSG method. The Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)(8) crystal crystallizes in the monoclinic system with the space group C2/c. The unit cell parameters are a = 5.181(2) angstrom, b = 12.677(7) angstrom, c = 19.161(10) angstrom, beta = 92.237(13)degrees and Z = 2. The Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)(8) crystal has a high structure disorder. The spectral properties of Nd3+-doped Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)(8) crystal exhibited broad absorption and emission bands, which are caused by the disordered structure of the Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)(8) crystal. Therefore, it may be regarded as a laser host material for diode laser pumping.

Abstract:Nd3+:Ba3Gd2(BO3)(4) single crystal of sized empty set20 mm x 20 mm was grown by the Czochralski technique. The effective segregation coefficient of Nd3+ in Ba3Gd2(BO3)(4) crystals was measured tribe 1.147. A series of thermal properties, including specific heat, the average linear thermal expansion coefficient, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity, were systematically determined as a function of temperature. The thermal conductivity along a, b and c-axes increases with increasing temperature. The room temperature polarized absorption spectrum was obtained over the range of 330-1000 nm, together with the room temperature fluorescence spectrum. The spectral parameters of the crystal were calculated by using the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory. The fluorescence lifetime is 80.58 mu s and the fluorescence quantum efficiency is eta(c) = 43.8%. A large FWHM value, moderate absorption cross-section and high thermal conductivity show that Nd3+:Ba3Gd2(BO3)(4) crystal holds promise as a useful solid state laser material. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Nd,Y:SrF2 crystal is considered a promising laser gain material in high-energy laser systems owing to its advantages of long emission lifetime, low nonlinear refractive index and high thermal conductivity. In this study, photothermal weak absorption and laser-induced damage at 1064 nm on the surface of NYSF crystals were characterized. Based on 3D damage morphologies of cracking and bending, thermoelastic effects were considered as the damage mechanism. By analyzing weak absorption values and laser-induced damage thresholds, the exponential-Chapman quantitative relationship between laser fluence and weak absorption was observed. Additionally, the relationship between the laser fluence and growth behavior of the damaged area was investigated, indicating that the damaged area grew exponentially with an increase in fluence, and the area damaged by a secondary laser pulse was one order of magnitude larger than the primary damaged area.
