Because of the wave velocity in rocks fully saturated with oil is not quite different from the full brine saturation case, it has been believed that sound wave can hardly be used to estimate oil content. In this study, we proposed a method to predict the elastic wave velocities in sandstone by incorporating grain surface effect in triple-layer patchy (TLP) model. This new method can accurately catch the velocity variations when oil saturation increase from 0 to 100%. Experiment data show that residue brine in tiny pore/crack can be driven away by oil, which may break the brine-gain membrane and form oil-gain contact. The bulk modulus will be significantly enhanced by higher surface energy of oil-gain interaction. The higher velocity at 100% oil saturation can be predicted successfully by the method proposed in this work. While conventional poro-elastic models, such as Gassmann's equation, can hardly model the velocity-saturation relation for oil-brine saturated sandstone.
