Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI) coated Fe3O4 hollow nanospheres (h-Fe3O4@ PANI) have been successfully synthesized and investigated as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The structure and composition analyses have been performed by employing X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show a good combination between h-Fe3O4 and PANI with a conductive state. When evaluated as anode materials for LIBs, the h-Fe3O4@PANI nanocomposites exhibit excellent LIB performance with enhanced reversible capacity, good cycling performance and rate capability as compared to h-Fe3O4 and solid Fe3O4 (s-Fe3O4) nanospheres. The improved electrochemical performance of the nanocomposite is considered due to the hollow nature of the products and the coated PANI layers.

Abstract:Carbon@FeSe nanocomposites with homogeneous hollow microspherical and nanotubular structures are prepared using sulfonated polystyrene microspheres and sulfonated poly(divinylbenzene) nanotubes as both the template and carbon source. Benefiting from their hollow core-shell and hierarchical micro/nanostructures, the carbon@FeSe nanocomposites as the anode material of Li-ion batteries exhibit high capacities with a steady discharge plateau of 1.5 V (vs. Li/Li+), stable cycling performance (700 mAhg(-1) in the 200th cycle at 800 mAg(-1)), and good rate behavior (620 mAhg(-1) at 16 Ag-1). The steady discharge plateau of carbon@FeSe, together with its high capacity, renders it a promising anode material for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:alpha-Fe2O3 hollow nanofibers were synthesized via a facile electrospinning process followed by a post-calcination process, and for the first time, Fe3O4 and Fe2N hollow nanofibers were successfully obtained via reduction and nitridation of the prepared alpha-Fe2O3 hollow nanofibers in the presence of NH3 atmosphere at 350 degrees C and 400 degrees C, respectively. The crystal structure, morphology and compositions of the alpha-Fe2O3, Fe3O4 and Fe2N hollow nanofibers were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). Electrochemical measurements show that the alpha-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 hollow nanofibers electrodes deliver a high specific initial discharge capacity of 1314 and 1210 mA h g (1), respectively, and a stable cycling performance (980 mA h g(-1) for alpha-Fe2O3 after 200 cycles and 572 mA h g(-1) for Fe3O4 after 300 cycles) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1). The Fe2N hollow nanofibers electrode demonstrates a high initial discharge capacity, good cycling stability (438 mA h g(-1) at the 300th cycle with a current density of 100 mA g(-1)), high coulombic efficiency, and excellent rate capability. The superior electrochemical performances are attributed to the unique one-dimensional hollow nanostructure of the materials. The prepared hollow nanofibers are candidate anode materials for Li-ion batteries.
Carbon-coated MnFe2O4 nanoparticle hollow microspheres as high-performance anode for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:In this work, carbon-coated MnFe2O4 nanoparticle (NP) hollow microspheres are fabricated by a facile emulsion-based assembly method followed by in situ ligand carbonization. Specifically, MnFe2O4 NPs stabilized by oleic acid (OA) are the primary building blocks to assemble hollow microspheres, while the subsequent carbonization of OA ligands leads to the formation of uniform carbon coatings without degrading the ordering of NPs. As anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, such MnFe2O4 NP hollow composite microspheres exhibit significantly improved electrochemical performance in comparison with their solid counterparts and most MnFe2O4-based anodes reported to date, retaining a high reversible capacity of 730mAhg−1 after 300 cycles at a current density of 2Ag−1. Furthermore, even when tested at an ultrahigh rate of 10Ag−1, MnFe2O4 NP hollow microspheres can still deliver a high specific capacity of 433mAhg−1. The superior performance of MnFe2O4 NP hollow microspheres is attributable to their hollow superstructure, close-packed configuration of the constituent NPs, and uniform carbon coatings, which facilitate lithium-ion and electron transport while simultaneously alleviating the drastic volumetric change during cycling. Our work establishes that the optimized MnFe2O4 anode material offers great promise for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Carbon coated hollow alpha-Fe2O3 spheres were prepared via a facile two-step hydrothermal method. The appearance and crystalline structure of the samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The morphology showed that the hollow spheres were composed of well crystallized nanoparticles after the first hydrothermal reaction and subsequent calcinations. A thin carbon film was coated on each Fe2O3 nanoparticles after the second hydrothermal procedure. This carbon coating was probably beneficial to maintain the microstructure of the active material during repeatable lithiation and delithiation. Afterwards, the samples were assembled into half-cells to investigate the electrochemical properties. The electrode delivered relatively high initial discharge/charge capacities of 1291/890 mA h g(-1) at the rate of 0.3 C. The reversible capacity maintained very well in a prolonged 140 cycles. The capacity retention was 89% after 70 cycles, and that was 81% after 140 cycles. This exceptional lithium storage property was probably attributed to the porous and hollow structure which allowed the penetration of electrolyte to the inner of the electrode, the nanoscale Fe2O3 particles which shortened the migration pathway for lithium ion, and the carbon coating which kept the active materials structure intact. The attractive electrochemical performance suggested the carbon coated hollow Fe2O3 spheres would be the potential anode material for future lithium ion battery.

Abstract:Hierarchical SnO2/Fe2O3 hollow spheres are fabricated through the solvothermal method accompanied by a facile solution procedure in the absence of any surfactant. The composition, crystalline structure, morphology, and electrochemical properties of the synthesized product are investigated systematically. The SnO2/Fe2O3 as an anode material in Li-ion batteries demonstrates a better reversible capacity and very good rate capability and cyclic performance compared with pure-phase SnO2 hollow spheres. The greatly enhanced Li-ion storage capability of the SnO2/Fe2O3 hollow spheres is believed to result from the synergy of the two materials, SnO2 and Fe2O3, which provides breathable aggregates for effective buffering of the drastic volume changes during the charge/discharge process. This work reports a promising method for the design and preparation of nanocomposite electrodes for Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:As an anode material of lithium-ion batteries, transition metal sulfides have high theoretical capacity, and the structure design is an effective strategy to gain better electrochemical performance. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have significant preponderances in the field of energy storage on account of their exchangeable anions and biggish specific surface area. Nevertheless, its defects such as poor conductivity, easy agglomeration of nanosheets and biggish volume change during the cycle result in poor cycling durability and rate performance, which gravely constrain its further application. In this study, hollow yolk-shell NiS 2 /FeS 2 @ LDH/FeO(OH) nanoflower microspheres are prepared successfully by solvothermal and hydrothermal methods. Firstly, introducing N-doped carbon layer can availably heighten the electro-conductivity of the materials and stop the metallic particles from falling off to boost the structural stability. The design of hollow yolk-shell and nanoflower structure can effectively inhibit cubical expansion. In addition, the unique layered structure of the nanosheets can provide more active sites, shorten the ion transport path, and enhance the lithium storage performance. As a result, the NiS 2 /FeS 2 @ LDH/FeO(OH) electrode has splendid cycling performance (709.9 mAh g -1 at 0.2 A g -1 after 200 cycles). These prominent electrochemical properties demonstrate convincingly that the NiS 2 /FeS 2 @ LDH/FeO(OH) is a viable anode material.

Abstract:The commercialized LIBs employing graphite as anodes currently suffer a series of problems from the safety problem, low theoretical capacity (372 mAh g−1) and bad rate capability. Herein, hollow microspheres MnFe2O4 (MFO) and nanoparticles MFO have been synthesized. Compared with the nanoparticles MFO, the hollow microspheres MFO as an anode material with novel structure demonstrate superior electrochemical performance, with large specific reversible capacity (1100 mAh g−1 at the specific current of 0.5 C after 100 cycles), high rate capability (more than 500 mAh g−1 even at 5.0 C) and good cyclability with little fading (1.4 % after 100 cycles). The excellent cycling performance is associated with the hollow microsphere structure with large specific surface areas, which can accommodate the severe mechanism strains and ensure more contact area between active material and electrolyte, thus good for diffusion of electrolyte and provide more reaction sites. This work presents a meaningful way for the preparation of MFO with different morphology as superior alternative anodes for lithium ion batteries.
Electrosprayed Porous Fe3O4/carbon Microspheres As Anode Materials for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Porous Fe3O4/carbon microspheres (PFCMs) were successfully fabricated via a facile electrospray method and subsequent heat treatment, using ferrous acetylacetonate, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), Ketjen black (KB), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and polystyrene (PS) as raw materials. The porous carbon sphere framework decorated with well-dispersed CNTs and KB exhibits excellent electronic conductivity and acts as a good host to confine the Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The abundant mesopores in the carbon matrix derived from polymer pyrolysis can effectively accommodate the volume changes of Fe3O4 during the charge/discharge process, facilitate electrolyte penetration, and promote fast ion diffusion. Moreover, a thin amorphous carbon layer on the Fe3O4 nanoparticle formed during polymer carbonization can further alleviate the mechanical stress associated with volume changes, and preventing aggregation and exfoliation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles during cycling. Therefore, as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the PFCMs exhibited excellent cycling stability with high specific capacities, and outstanding rate performances. After 130 cycles at a small current density of 0.1 A·g–1, the reversible capacity of the PFCM electrode is maintained at almost 1,317 mAh·g–1. High capacities of 746 and 525 mAh·g–1 were still achieved after 300 cycles at the larger currents of 1 and 5 A·g–1, respectively. The optimized structure design and facile fabrication process provide a promising way for the utilization of energy storage materials, which have high capacities but whose performance is hindered by large volume changes and poor electrical conductivity in lithium or sodium ion batteries.

Abstract:Iron oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ) emerges as a highly attractive anode candidate among rapidly expanding energy storage market. Nonetheless, its considerable volume changes during cycling as an electrode material result in a vast reduced battery cycle life. In this work, an approach is pioneered for preparing high-performance Fe 2 O 3 anode materials, by innovatively synthesizing a triple-layer yolk-shell Fe 2 O 3 uniformly coated with a conductive polypyrrole (Ppy) layer (Fe 2 O 3 @Ppy-TLY). The uniform polypyrrole coating introduces more reaction sites and adsorption sites, and maintains structure stability through charge-discharge process. In the uses as lithium-ion battery electrodes, Fe 2 O 3 @Ppy-TLY demonstrates high reversible specific capacity (maintaining a discharge capacity of 1375.11 mAh·g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 C), exceptional cycling stability (retaining the steady charge-discharge performance at 544.33 mAh·g −1 after 6000 ultrafast charge-discharge cycles at a 10 C current density), and outstanding high current charge-discharge performance (retaining a reversible capacity of 156.75 mAh·g −1 after 10000 cycles at 15 C), thereby exhibiting superior lithium storage performance. This work introduces innovative advancements for Fe 2 O 3 anode design, aiming to enhance its performance in energy storage fields.

Abstract:High energy-storage Li-ion battery needs a high-capacity anode. However, current graphite-based anode doesn't meet this requirement, thus developing high performance anode materials is highly needed and significant. Here, we provide a rational engineering of a multi-layered hollow structure combining with surface coating of polyamine (PANI) layer, forming a Co 3 O 4 /NiO@PANI hybrid using for Li-ion battery anode. PANI is able to effectively improve the conductivity of active materials; besides, PANI is flexible, which can prevent the collapse of the structure caused by volume-expansion during charge and discharge. The multi-layered morphology improves the utilization ratio of voids inside the conventional hollow structured materials, which is significant to improve capacity in practical applications. The Co 3 O 4 /NiO@PANI hybrid-based anode shows a capacity of 1049 mAh g -1 along with a Coulombic efficiency of 99.3% after 100 cycles of 0.2 A g -1 . Rate-performance of Co 3 O 4 /NiO@PANI exceeds that of the bare Co 3 O 4 /NiO. It is believed that the hierarchical structure combining multi-layered hollow morphology with surface coating of conductive polymer presented here would find broad applications for developing high-performance energy-storage hybrids.

Abstract:Fe3O4 nanoparticles encapsulated in porous carbon fibers (Fe3O4@PCFs) as anode materials in lithium ion batteries are fabricated by a facile single-nozzle electrospinning technique followed by heat treatment. A mixed solution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polystyrene (PS) containing Fe3O4 nanoparticles is utilized to prepare hybrid precursor fibers of Fe3O4@PS/PAN. The resulted porous Fe3O4/carbon hybrid fibers composed of compact carbon shell and Fe3O4-embeded honeycomb-like carbon core are formed due to the thermal decomposition of PS and PAN. The Fe3O4@PCF composite demonstrates an initial reversible capacity of 1015mAhg−1 with 84.4% capacity retention after 80 cycles at a current density of 0.2Ag−1. This electrode also exhibits superior rate capability with current density increasing from 0.1 to 2.0Ag−1, and capacity retention of 91% after 200 cycles at 2.0Ag−1. The exceptionally high performances are attributed to the high electric conductivity and structural stability of the porous carbon fibers with unique structure, which not only buffers the volume change of Fe3O4 with the internal space, but also acts as high-efficient transport pathways for ions and electrons. Furthermore, the compact carbon shell can promote the formation of stable solid electrolyte interphase on the fiber surface.

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of three-dimensionally porous Fe3O4 via template-assisted and subsequent electrochemical deposition methods. When used as anode materials of lithium–ion batteries, the porous Fe3O4 electrodes show better cyclability and enhanced rate capabilities compared to planar Fe3O4 electrodes. The superior performance can be attributed to improved electrical contact, fast electron transport and good strain accommodation of the porous electrodes. The effect of the thickness of the porous Fe3O4 electrodes on the lithium–ion battery performance has also been investigated.

Abstract:3-Dimensional hierarchically porous ZnFe2O4/C composites with interconnected macropores and co-continuous hollow skeletons are facilely synthesized and used as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. The interconnected macropores impede the agglomeration of primary particles and buffer the volumetric variations, hollow mesoporous skeletons not only improve the interfacial contact area between electrode and electrolyte but also facilitate lithium ions transfer rate. Moreover, N-doped carbon layer further enhances the conductivity and mechanical strength of skeletons, as well as accelerates electron transfer during repeated discharge and charge process. The as-prepared 3-dimensional hierarchically porous ZnFe2O4/C composites possess excellent Li-ion storage properties, delivering a high reversible capacity of 972 mAh g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles and a decent specific capacity of 711 mAh g(-1) even at a large current density of 1000 mA g(-1) after 400 cycles. These values are among the highest reported for ZnFe2O4-based materials with different morphologies and nanostructures. The resultant ZnFe2O4/C composites display the potential practical application for high-performance Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:The carbon-coated Fe3O4 nanoflakes were synthesized by partial reduction of monodispersed hematite (Fe2O3) nanoflakes with carbon coating. The carbon-coated Fe3O4 nanoflakes were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements. It has been demonstrated that Fe2O3 can be completely converted to Fe3O4 during the reduction process and carbon can be successfully coated on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoflakes, forming a conductive matrix. As anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the carbon-coated Fe3O4 nanoflakes exhibit a large reversible capacity up to 740 mAh g(-1) with significantly improved cycling stability and rate capability compared to the bare Fe2O3 nanoflakes. The superior electrochemical performance of the carbon-coated Fe3O4 nanoflakes can be attributed to the synthetic effects between small particle size and highly conductive carbon matrix. Abstract:Iron-based anode materials have aroused wide attention due to the multiple advantages of high capacity, abundant resources, eco-friendly and low-cost features, whereas the big volume changes upon cycling and low conductivity limit their practical applications. Herein, the dopamine N-doped carbon-encapsulated Fe3O4 and Fe7S8 hollow nanospheres (Fe3O4@NC and Fe7S8@NC) have been designed via a facile synthesis strategy. The hierarchical hollow structure of inner Fe3O4/Fe7S8 restrains the big volume fluctuation upon cycling. The outer tightly wrapped N-doped carbon shell effectively enhances the conductivity of overall electrode and meanwhile serves as the protective layer to inhibit the structure collapse. The strong chemical bonding effects between Fe3O4/Fe7S8 and N-doped carbon construct such stable structures. As expected, both two composites show excellent lithium storage performances owing to the cooperative effect of N-doped carbon shell and internal active material. The reversible capacity of Fe3O4@NC/Fe7S8@NC reaches as high as 830/690 mAh g−1 over 1500/500 loops even at a high rate of 2 A g−1. The excellent electrochemical performances of Fe3O4@NC/Fe7S8@NC demonstrate their potential merits as next-generation anodes for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Herein, to efficiently improve the lithium storage of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, a distinctive porous carbon (PC) assisted carbon nanotubes (CNTs) supporting architecture has been designed and fabricated successfully. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles are deposited on the surface of CNTs and then covered by an extra PC. In such a designed architecture, highly conductive and robust CNTs can not only improve the conductivity but also boost the structure of the as-fabricated Fe3O4-based composite (CNTs@Fe3O4@PC). In particular, the foam-like PC has a certain level of volume elasticity and open tunnel-like structure to better anchor the Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of CNTs and facilitate the transfer of electrons and ions, therefore guaranteeing the fast kinetics and longterm stability. The results show that the capacitive contribution is predominant in lithium storage of the CNTs@Fe3O4@PC electrode. Consequently, the as-fabricated CNTs@Fe3O4@PC shows high capacity, good rate capability, and long life, displaying 766 and 572 mAh g-1 after 400 and 700 cycles at 200 and even 1000 mA g-1, respectively. Thus outstanding performance makes the CNTs@Fe3O4@PC have great potential to be advanced lithium-ion battery anode materials. Furthermore, this strategy can be extended to other nanostructured metal oxide anodes, such as CoO, SnO2, and Bi2O3 nanomaterials.
