Abstract:Red phosphor is indispensable to achieve warm white light in the white light diode (WLED) application. However, the current red phosphors suffer from high cost and harsh synthesis conditions. In this study, an oxide-based rare-earth-free red-emitting phosphor Li3Mg2NbO6:Mn4+ (LMN:Mn4+) has been successfully synthesized by a simple solid-state reaction method. The relationship between crystal structure and luminescence was investigated in detail. The site occupancy of the doping Mn4+ ion in the LMN host has been discussed from the point of bond valence sum. How the coordination environment of doping Mn4+ affects the energy level of doping Mn4+ ion has been illustrated via the Tanabe-Sugano energy-level diagram. Moreover, warm white light has been obtained using LMN:Mn4+ as compensator to the YAG:Ce3+.
Energy transfer from Mn4+ to Mn5+ and near infrared emission with wide excitation band in Ca14Zn6Ga10O35:Mn phosphors

Abstract:Ca14Zn6Ga10-xO35:xMn(CZG:xMn) phosphors were synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction. High doping concentration as 30 mol% for Mn ions can be realized in the compounds due to the existence of the multiple valance of Mn ions. Both red emission from Mn4+ and near infrared (NIR) emission from Mn5+ were observed from CZG:xMn phosphors. The energy transfer from Mn4+ ions to Mn5+ ions was detected, which makes it possible for CZG:xMn phosphors to emit 1152 nm light under the excitation of the whole visible light region, especially under the commercial blue chips (450 nm). This means the CZG: xMn phosphors can be used in the manufacture of NIR sources with small size, simple structure and low cost. Because CZG:xMn can be excited by 600 ~ 700 nm and emits 1152 nm, the phosphors show the application in the real-time biochemical detection because of the excellent penetration capacity of biological tissue for 600 ~ 700 nm and 1152 nm light. With the aid of low-temperature PL spectra, it was found that two zero phonon lines and multiple vibration bands are responsible for the five compact emission band from 650 ~ 750 nm of Mn4+ ions. The results are helpful to comprehend the mechanism of the emission of Mn ions in CZG:xMn and promote the phosphors application.

Abstract:With narrow red photoluminescence (PL) bands, tetravalent Mn4+ doped phosphors show promising prospect in commercial application to effectively expand color gamut of phosphor converted LED displays. Here, we report a type of Sr-2-Mg-z(1)+yYzAl22-O-x(36):xMn(4+) phosphors with regular cage-like micro spherical morphologies. The micron size spherical precursors were synthesized with a propylene oxide (PO) driven fast sol-gel method. The cage-like spherical morphology is beneficial to efficiently trapping much incident light to enhance the PL of the phosphors. Being calcined at 1300 & nbsp;?, Sr2MgAl21.978O36:0.022Mn(4+) only exhibits the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 24.91%. With the Mg2+-Mn4+ codoping and Y3+/Sr2+ substituting strategies, to fulfill charge balance and produce John Teller distortion, IQE of Sr-2-Mg-z(1)+yYzAl22-O-x(36):xMn(4+) can be further improved up to 36.45%. The CIE color coordinates of Sr-2-Mg-z(1)+yYzAl22-O-x(36):xMn(4+) under near ultraviolet excitation can be stably fixed to (0.723, 0.227) at deep red region. It thus finds a potential application as pc-LED display with much broader color gamut than that of the NTSC standard. Therefore, Sr-2-Mg-z(1)+yYzAl22-O-x(36):xMn(4+) micron size spheres can be employed as promising red phosphors for high performance LED displays.(c) 2021 Published by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of Chinese Society of Rare Earths.

Abstract:High quantum efficiency (QE) and thermally stable emission are indispensable for the application of phosphors. Owing to the strong coupling between the lattice and naked d-orbitals of Mn 4+ , Mn 4+ -activated oxide red-emitting phosphors usually exhibit a low QE and serious thermal quenching (TQ), which strictly inhibit their prospective application. Herein, we rationally designed a novel phosphor series Ca 7 Mg 2 Ga 6− y Al y O 18 :0.02Mn 4+ (CMGA y O:Mn 4+ , 0 ≤ y ≤ 1.5), which adopts a high structural symmetry of the space group F 432. Highly efficient and thermally stable deep-red emissions ( λ em = 721 nm) were achieved simultaneously by structurally confining the Mn 4+ -emitting centres at the isolated octahedrally coordinated sites. Specifically, the highest internal and external quantum efficiencies of 90.2 and 75.9%, respectively, were obtained for CMGA 1.5 O:Mn 4+ due to Al 3+ -alloying-induced local structure modification and suppression of non-radiative transitions. Excellent thermal stabilities of 99, 102.2, and 87.9% of room-temperature photoluminescence intensities were retained at 423 K for CMGA y O:Mn 4+ with y = 0, 0.5, and 1.5, respectively. CMGA 0.5 O:Mn 4+ exhibits an abnormal negative TQ behaviour over the measured temperature range (298–473 K), which is attributed to the energy gain via the electron–phonon interactions of the isolated MnO 6 octahedra. Moreover, in situ high-pressure emission spectra of CMGO:0.02Mn 4+ showed that the emission position is highly sensitive to the external pressure with redshift coefficients of 2.8(2) and 1.16(4) nm GPa −1 in different pressure regions. These excellent photoluminescence properties of CMGA y O:Mn 4+ phosphors signify their great application potential in red LEDs and optical pressure sensors. The findings of this work have paved an avenue for the design of high-performance Mn 4+ -activated phosphors.

Abstract:An excellent persistent luminescence (PersL) phosphor NaCa2GeO4F:Mn2+,Yb3+ has been synthesized by traditional solid-state reaction. By controlling the occupation sites of Mn2+ emitters, the PersL color of this phosphor can be optionally tuned in the red to green-yellow region, and the maximum spectral shift is more than 50 nm. Significantly, the red PersL can be measured for approximately 13 and 3 h (0.32 mcd/m2) and can be observed for more than 20 and 5 h with dark-adapted vision after exposure to ultraviolet irradiation and artificial sunlight, respectively. The crystal/electronic structure and photoluminescence/PersL properties of this phosphor have been investigated in detail. A series of the excitation temperature-dependent thermoluminescence experiments and the initial rising method have been conducted to study the trap properties of this phosphor. It reveals the reasons for the variation of PersL color, excellent red PersL, and degradation of green-yellow PersL. According to the results, the as-prepared NaCa2GeO4F:Mn2+,Yb3+ can be considered as an excellent red PersL phosphor, and it also has potential for application in optical storage.

Abstract:To explore a new phosphor, Ca19Zn2(PO4)(14):Ce3+,Tb3+ and Ca19Zn2(PO4)(14):Ce3+,Mn2+ phosphors are successfully synthesized with the objective of application in ultraviolet-based light-emitting diodes. X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and lifetimes were used to characterize the samples. Under UV excitation, the energy transfer from the Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions in the Ca19Zn2(PO4)(14) host occurred mainly via a dipole-quadrupole mechanism, and the critical distances of the ion pairs (R-C) were calculated by the spectral overlap method. A bright red light emission was observed in the Ce3+ and Mn2+ codoped samples via the energy transfer from the sensitizer Ce3+ to Mn2+ ions. With an appropriate ratio of the active ion concentrations, the Ce3+, Tb3+ and Ce3+,Mn2+ codoped Ca19Zn2(PO4)(14) phosphors can generate light from the blue to green and blue to orange regions, respectively. The emission colors of the phosphors were also clarified by CIE coordinates briefly.
Enhancing quantum efficiency and tuning photoluminescence properties in far-red-emitting phosphor Ca14Ga10Zn6O35:Mn4+ based on chemical unit engineering

Abstract:Mn4+ activated Ca14Ga10Zn6O35 (CGZO) have attracted much attention for the usages of white light-emitting-diodes (WLEDs), solar cells and plant growth LEDs. In this paper, we conducted chemical unit engineering in CGZO:Mn4+ by substituting Ge4+-M+ (M = Li, Na, K) for Ga3+-Ca2+. The impacts of Ge4+-M+ (M = Li, Na, K) substitution on the crystal structure, photoluminescence properties, quantum efficiency (QE) and thermal stability were investigated systematically. With the increase of Ge4+-Li+/Na+ and Ge4+-K+, the diffraction peaks moved towards higher and lower angle, respectively. The greatest improvement of emission intensity in Ge4+-Li+/Na+/K+ co-doped CGZO:Mn4+ reached up to 169.4%, 195.0% and 198.9%. Moreover, an obvious red shift (∼3.6 nm) was detected in Ge4+-Li+ case and this change was interpreted by Tanabe–Sugano diagram. The IQE and EQE of Ge4+-Li+/Na+/K+ co-doped CGZO:Mn4+ showed remarkable improvements. The highest values of IQE and EQE were found to be 50.9% and 38.9% in Ge4+-K+ incorporated sample. Furthermore, conducting chemical unit engineering in CGZO:Mn4+ could slightly enhance its thermal stability. The configurational coordinated diagram was employed to understand this enhancement comprehensively. Finally, LED devices were fabricated by using Ge4+-Li+ co-doped CGZO:Mn4+ phosphor as light convertor. The excellent electronic luminescence (EL) properties and matchable emission with the absorption of plant pigments demonstrating that these phosphors have promising application in plant growth LED lighting.

Abstract:The Mn4+-doped Ca2MgTeO6 (CMTO) far-red emitting phosphors with double perovskite-type structure were successfully synthesized. Upon near-ultraviolet (n-UV, 300 nm) light excitation, the as-prepared phosphors showed far-red light at 700 nm attributed to the 2Eg→4A2g transition of Mn4+ ion. The doping concentration of the CMTO:xMn4+ samples was optimized to be 0.8 mol%. The relevant mechanism of concentration quenching was demonstrated as the dipole-dipole interaction. Furthermore, solid solution and impurity doping strategies were adopted to improve the far-red emission of the luminescence-ignorable CMTO:Mn4+ phosphor. Series of Ca2MgTe(1−y)W y O6:0.8 mol%Mn4+ (y = 0–100 mol%) solid solution and Ca2−z Ln z MgTe0.6W0.4O6:Mn4+ (Ln = La, Y, and Gd, z = 10 mol%) phosphors were synthesized through the above two strategies. The luminescence intensity of the optimal Ca1.9Gd0.1MgTe0.6W0.4O6:Mn4+ phosphor was 13.7 times that of the CMTO:Mn4+ phosphor and 2.51 times that of red commercial phosphor K2SiF6:Mn4+. Notably, both CMTO:Mn4+ and Ca1.9Gd0.1MgTe0.6W0.4O6:Mn4+ phosphors exhibited remarkable thermal stability compared with most Mn4+-doped phosphors. Finally, the highly efficient Ca1.9Gd0.1MgTe0.6W0.4O6:Mn4+ phosphor was successfully applied in fabricating the warm white light diode (w-LED). This working along both lines strategy exhibited great potential for luminescence optimization of Mn4+-doped oxide phosphors.

Highly Regular, Uniform K3ScF6:Mn4+ Phosphors: Facile Synthesis, Microstructures, Photoluminescence Properties, and Application in Light-Emitting Diode Devices

Abstract:A new generation of red phosphors of complex fluoride matrices activated with Mn4+ has gained a broad interest in getting high color quality and low color temperature of solid-state white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). However, besides their instability toward moisture, the extremely irregular and nonuniform morphologies of these phosphors have limited their practical industry applications. In the present study, a novel type of K3ScF6:Mn4+ red phosphor with highly regular, uniform, and high color purity was obtained successfully through a facile coprecipitation route under mild conditions. The crystal structure was identified with aids of the powder X-ray diffraction, Rietveld refinement, and density functional theory calculations. The prototype crystallizes in the space group Fm3 m with a cubic structure, and the lattice parameters are fitted well to be a = b = c = 8.4859(8) Å and V = 611.074(2) Å3. The Mn4+ ions occupy Sc3+ sites and locate at the centers of the distorted ScF6 octahedrons. A wide band gap of approximately 6.15 eV can provide sufficient space to accommodate impurity energy levels. Unlike most other Mn4+ ion-activated fluoride phosphors, the as-prepared K3ScF6:Mn4+ phosphors demonstrate highly uniform and regular morphologies with shapes transforming from cube to octahedron with increasing Mn4+ ion concentration. Under blue light excitation, the as-prepared K3ScF6:Mn4+ sample exhibits intense sharp-line red fluorescence (the strongest peak located at 631 nm) with high color purity. An excellent recovery in luminescence upon heating and cooling processes implies high stability of K3ScF6:Mn4+. Furthermore, a warm WLED fabricated with blue GaN chips merged with the mixture of K3ScF6:Mn4+ and the well-known commercial YAG:Ce3+ yellow phosphors exhibits wonderful color quality with lower correlated color temperature (3250 K) and higher color-rendering index ( Ra = 86.4). These results suggest that the K3ScF6:Mn4+ phosphor possesses stupendous potentiality for practical applications.
Preparation and photoluminescence study of rare-earth-free red emitting La[math]Ga[math]SiO[math]:Mn[math]phosphors

Abstract:Functional Materials Letters, Ahead of Print. Given the growing interest in eco-friendly lighting solutions, the use of high-quality phosphors has become integral to the advancement of all-solid white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). One novel phosphor, La3Ga5SiO[math]:Mn[math] (LGS), has been successfully synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction. The crystal structure of LGS is classified as belonging to the trigonal phase, with a space group P321. The excitation spectrum exhibits a wide peak within the wavelength range of 280–440 nm. It emits a highly intense red light, with a peak emission occurring at 715 nm within the spectral range of 670–740 nm is attributed to the transition of Mn[math] from 4A[math] to 4T[math] LGS:Mn[math] demonstrates a favorable quantum efficiency of 16% when doped with a concentration of 0.25 mol% Mn. The decay curve of LGS:Mn[math] exhibits a pattern of decreasing lifetime as the dopant concentration increases. Additionally, the LGS:Mn[math] products demonstrate a CIE chromaticity of (0.688, 0.2644), which is located within the deep red light region. All the aforementioned findings support the potential application of LGS:Mn[math] specimens in WLEDs, thereby contributing to the progress of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient lighting.

Abstract:Nowadays, one-phase and full-color phosphors have gained increasing interest. Here, we show that Mn-activated zinc gallogermanate, Zn1+xGa2-2xGexO4: Mn, x = 0 similar to 1, phosphors exhibit a broadly tunable luminescence from green to deep red with the substitution of Ga3+ by Ge4+. The green and deep red emissions are attributed to Mn2+ and Mn4+ occupying the tetrahedrally coordinated Zn2+ and octahedrally coordinated Ga3+ sites, respectively. The origin of the tunable luminescence is discussed. The present phosphors have potential uses in field emission displays and in vivo bio-imaging. (C)2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this work, Ca3MgSi2O8:R (R = Dy3+, Eu3+, and Eu3+/Dy3+) phosphors are synthesized in air by using the high-emperature solid-state reaction method. The crystal phase, crystal structures, lifetimes, and luminescence properties are investigated. Ca3MgSi2O8:Eu3+ phosphor with excitation at 394 nm emits red-orange light and its emission spectrum covers the region from 575 nm to 720 nm due to the 5D0 → 7F0, 7F1, 7F2, 7F3, and 7F4 transitions of Eu3+ ion. Ca3MgSi2O8:Dy3+ phosphor under excitation at 350 nm exhibits yellow-green emission with four emission bands in the range of 460–500 nm, 550–600 nm, 650–680 nm, and 740–775 nm, which are attribuited to the 4F9/2 → 6H15/2, 6H13/2, 6H11/2, and 6H9/2 transitions of Dy3+ ion, respectively. The energy transfer from Dy3+ to Eu3+ ions in Ca3MgSi2O8:Eu3+, Dy3+ phosphor can be confirmed by the spectral properties. The tunable emission properties of Ca3MgSi2O8:Eu3+, Dy3+ phosphor from yellow-green to red-orange can be fulfilled by the change of the excitation wavelength or the concentration proportion between Dy3+ and Eu3+ ions. The luminous mechanism and energy transfer of Ca3MgSi2O8:Eu3+, Dy3+ phosphor are explained by the energy level diagrams of Eu3+ and Dy3+ ions.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of MgGa2-x(Zn/Ge)xO4:0.001Mn (x = 0, 0.05, 0.15, 0.3, 0.5, 1 and 1.2) phosphors were successfully synthesized using high temperature solid-state reaction. Under excitation at 377 nm, the sample has two emission peaks at 501 nm and 673 nm, respectively. In this material, Mn2+ and Mn4+ ions replace tetrahedral site (Mg site) and octahedral site (Ga site), respectively. The green emission at 501 nm belongs to the 4T1(G)-> 6A1(S) transition of Mn2+, and the red emission of 673 nm belongs to the 2E -> 4A2 transition of Mn4+.

Abstract:A novel red phosphor Ca1-2xEuxLixMoO4 with high performance is reported. Under the excitation of 254 nm UV light, its, luminescent intensity is comparable to that of the commercial red phosphor Y2O3:Eu3+. With high Eu3+ concentration, the phosphor has strong excitation due to f-f transitions of Eu3+ appearing around 395 nm. Abstract:Red phosphors play an important role in improving the light quality and color rendering index of white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) for lighting. In this paper, we report the transition ions Mn4+-activated deep red phosphor GdGeSbO6: x% Mn4+ and analyze its crystal structure, composition and luminescence behavior in detail. Its optimal doping concentration of Mn4+ is 0.3%. Under ultraviolet (UV) excitation, GdGeSbO6: 0.3% Mn4+ produces a narrow emission peak centered at 682 nm in the range of 650-800 nm with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 25 nm, which is attributed to the spin-prohibited 2Eg→4A2g transition of Mn4+ ions. Notably, the optimal phosphor GdGeSbO6: 0.3% Mn4+ has a high internal quantum efficiency (IQE ≈ 65%) and excellent thermal stability performance (I423 K/I303 K ≈ 62%). Abstract:A novel far-red emitting phosphor Na0.2La0.2Sr1.6MgWO6: Mn4+ can be fabricated by high-temperature solid-state reaction. Photoluminescence excitation and photoluminescence spectra of this phosphor were analyzed in detail. Effective far-red light peaking at 691 nm was observed when the phosphors were excited by 350 nm or 467 nm. By using a [Na+-La3+] unit substituting [Sr2+-Sr2+] unit partially, the far-red emission intensity of Sr2MgWO6:0.006Mn4+ can be improved about 6.5 times. Moreover, thermal stability of the optimized co-doped phosphor was investigated by thermal luminescence spectra and the value of I373K/I298K. Finally, there are a broad spectral overlap between the emission band of Na0.2La0.2Sr1.6MgWO6: Mn4+ phosphors and the absorption band of phytochrome PFR under near-ultraviolet light spectrum. Therefore, the obtained phosphors Na0.2La0.2Sr1.6MgWO6: Mn4+ have potential to be a new type far-red luminescent powder for indoor plant growth LEDs.

Abstract:A novel red phosphor Ca 1 - 2 x Eu x Li x MoO 4 with high performance is reported. Under the excitation of 254 nm UV light, its luminescent intensity is comparable to that of the commercial red phosphor Y 2 O 3 :Eu 3 + . With high Eu 3 + concentration, the phosphor has strong excitation due to f-f transitions of Eu 3 + appearing around 395 nm. Thus, it is a promising material for solid-state lighting based on GaN light-emitting diode (LED).

Abstract:White light emission phosphors are widely researched for application in lighting and display fields. However, the poor thermal stability is a real problem for the known single-phased white phosphors, which limits their further application. In this paper, Ca19Na2Mg(PO4)14: xDy3+, yTm3+ (CNMP, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.06, y = 0, 0.01) phosphors with adjustable emission and good thermal stability are synthesized. The X-ray diffraction and X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer measurement distinctly confirm the successful synthesis of CNMP: xDy3+, yTm3+ (CNMP, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.06, y = 0, 0.01). The photoluminescence results reveal that CNMP: Dy3+ shows characteristic excitation peaks in the range of 350-450 nm, and mainly exhibits strong yellow emission around 575 nm ascribed to the 4F9/2-6H13/2 transitions of Dy3+. To compensate the deficiency of blue light emission of CNMP: Dy3+, the trivalent Tm3+ ion is co-doped owing to its characteristic blue emission at 450 nm due to its 1D2-3F4 transitions. Therefore, the emission of CNMP: Dy3+, Tm3+ can be tuned from blue light region with CIE coordinates of (0.1649, 0.0387) to white light region with CIE coordinates of (0.3001, 0.3003) and finally move to yellow light region with CIE coordinates of (0.3732, 0.4493) through adjusting the doping ratio of Dy3+/Tm3+. The energy transfer efficiency and the energy transfer mechanism from Tm3+ to Dy3+ are further investigated. Moreover, CNMP: Dy3+, Tm3+ exhibites a high thermal stability and the emission intensity still keeps 84% of the initial intensity of Dy3+ at 230 °C. These outstanding properties show that Ca19Na2Mg(PO4)14: Dy3+, Tm3+ have great advantages and potentiality for applying in solid state lighting.

Abstract:The CaO:xDy 3+ , yNa + phosphors, were synthesized by high solidstate method, and the starting materials are CaCO 3 Na 2 CO 3 and Dy 2 O 3 . The effects of the Dy 3+ ,Na + doping concentration on luminescent properties were studied by TG/DSC,XRD and PL spectra.The results indicated that when the sinter temperature of precursors over 950 °C,the main phase of the phosphor is CaO, and when x=0.02,y=0.15 we obtained the best luminescent properties of CaO:xDy 3+ , yNa + phosphors;Na + effectively enhances the luminescent properties of phosphors;The maximum emission wavelength is about 480 nm (blue),corresponding to 4 F 9 /2 6 H 15 /2 of Dy 3+ ; There are a series of spectral lines in the 240-420 nm range of excitation spectrum,and the strong excitation peak located at 360 and 375 nm.

Abstract:In the present work, a series of zincate CaY2Sb2(ZnO4)3:Eu3+ phosphors were successfully obtained via the conventional solid-state method at high temperature. The phase purity, morphology, element mapping, photoluminescence excitation/emission (PLE/PL), and decay time of the obtained phosphors were investigated systematically. Results show that the synthesized samples demonstrate the strongest red-emitting peak at 610 nm under the n-ultraviolet (n-UV) 395 nm excitation. The Judd-Ofelt parameters (Ω2, Ω4), radiative transition rates, and branching ratios (β0J, J = 2, 4) of CaY2Sb2(ZnO4)3:Eu3+ to explore the Eu3+-coordinated environment in the host matrix. The concentration quenching of CaY2Sb2(ZnO4)3:2xEu3+ phosphors happened until at high doping concentration of x = 50 mol%. CaY2Sb2(ZnO4)3:100 mol%Eu3+ sample presented the excellent thermal stability with abnormal thermal quenching behavior. Compared with the commercial Y2O3:Eu3+ red phosphor, the luminescent intensity of the prepared phosphor is 1.14 times stronger. The high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of CaY2Sb2(ZnO4)3:100 mol%Eu3+ phosphor is 79.20%. In addition, the fabricated red and white light-emitting diodes (w-LEDs) both emit bright light. The w-LED demonstrates a high color rendering index (Ra = 96) and a low correlated color temperature (CCT = 5249 K). Therefore, the prepared red-emitting phosphor has a promising application in w-LEDs.
