Abstract:Uniform TiO2/SiO2 nanospheres of 500 nm size were in situ fabricated on substrates by a facile soft templating route. The morphologies of the nanospheres on the substrates, as well as the intermediates, were evaluated by FESEM. During the synthesis, a micelle formation process transforming from rod-like micelles to vesicles to lamellar phases was proposed, attributed to the electrostatic self-assembly process of the oppositely charged cationic cetyltrimethyl-ammonium tosylate (CTATos) and anionic Si-OH in the solution. The processed substrates are transparent and super-hydrophilic with good antifogging properties. The homogeneous growth, firm substrate combination, and facile procedures are significantly advantageous for the fabrication method and can be explored with other substrates such as modified electrodes and nanoscale devices for diverse applications.

Abstract:Preventing the appearance of fog on transparent glass is an important issue not only in our daily lives but also in scientific research and clinical diagnosis. A zeolite molecular sieve with MFI-type structure was identified as a very promising antifog material. In this work, MFI zeolite films with different microstructures were prepared by the solvothermal secondary growth method using diols including ethylene glycol (EG), diethylene glycol (DEG), triethylene glycol (TEG), and tetraethylene glycol (tEG) as solvents. The elimination mechanism of new MFI twin crystals was demonstrated based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterizations of the resulting films and the mother solutions. The twin-free MFI films with b-axis preferred channel orientation exhibited both higher light transmittance and lower haze compared with the a-&b-mix-oriented film. The employment of diol solvents facilitated the generation of a surface Si-OH group on the films, leading to the improvement of film hydrophilicity. By taking advantages of the high transparency and hydrophilicity, the b-oriented MFI films synthesized on glass substrate achieved good antifogging performance.

Abstract:TiO 2 nanoparticles were in-situ prepared on the solid/liquid interfacial adsorption layer. In the suspension of colloidal silica particles in binary mixtures of water/ethanol, a water-rich layer was formed on the hydrophilic surface of SiO 2. After phase equilibrium, dropping tetrabutyl titanate diffused into the adsorption layer and reacted with water. After centrifugation and drying, samples were obtained. The solvent-substituted experiment testified that reaction took place on the adsorption layer. TEM, XRD and electronic energy spectrum indicated uniform TiO 2 laid over the surface of SiO 2 particles. The effect of reaction temperature was investigated and potential mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic titanium (Ti) and its alloys have attracted considerable attention due to their application potentials; however, it is very difficult to obtain directly superhydrophobic surfaces on the Ti substrate by the anodization method. In the present work, TiO2 pinecone-like micro/nanostructures (TPSs) were fabricated on the Ti substrate by the anodization method. It was found that the sample surfaces without chemical modification were superhydrophilic and then became superhydrophobic after their exposure to air for a long time. After the high-temperature annealing treatment, the time required for the superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic wettability transition with the maximum water contact angle (WCA) of similar to 153 degrees and sliding angle (SA) of similar to 0 degrees was reduced from 81 days to 63 days. The surface chemistry and morphology analysis indicated that the wettability transition mainly occurred by the adsorption of organic compounds from ambient air and the trapped air in the microstructure. Furthermore, the superhydrophobic surfaces had excellent anti-icing and self-cleaning properties and long-term stability

Abstract:Environmental purification using nano-TiO2 photocatalysts has attracted a great deal of attention in society. The super-hydrophilicity and self-cleaning surface of TiO2 thin film which is studied extensively establish new research area of photocatalytic thin film materials. Nano-TiO2 thin film coated on glass is effective in anti-fogging and antifouling. But TiO2 still exists disadvantages, such as hydrophilicity time and illumination conditions. In this paper we discuss how to improve surface hydrophilicity and light-sensitive property of TiO2 and make it apply to practice and create clean space to human.

Abstract:TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared in nanoreactor formed by the adsorption layer on silica surface. Solvent replacement experiment provided direct evidence that there was a water-rich adsorption layer and the reaction took place in the layer. TEM, XRD and XPS indicated a uniform TiO2 particles laid over surface of SiO2. The effects of reaction temperature and reactant concentration were investigated and the potential mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:A novel fabrication method of uniform porous structures on the glass surface is proposed. The hydrofluoric acid fog formed by air-jet atomization etches the glass surface to fabricate nanoporous structure (NPS) on glass surface. This NPS shows the enhanced average light transmittance of approximately 92.9% and the superhydrophilic property with a contact angle less than 1° which presents an excellent anti-fog property. Passivated by fluorosilane, the NPS shows nearly the superhydrophobic property with a contact angle of 141.2°. This fabrication method has shown promising application prospects due to its simplicity, low cost and efficiency, which can be easily applied to large-scale industrial production.
Control of Nucleation in Solution Growth of Anatase Tio2 on Glass Substrate

Abstract:Low-temperature preparation of ceramic thin films in aqueous solution is an important new field in the synthesis of functional materials. This work examines control of nucleation in the growth of anatase titania (TiO2) on a common glass substrate at 55-80 degreesC using an inorganic precursor, TiF4. It is found that TiO2 on fused silica is first formed as single-crystalline nuclei during an initial heterogeneous nucleation. These TiO2 crystallites elongate along the [001] direction with their [110] axis perpendicular to the glass substrate; the elongated nuclei later grew into a round flowerlike morphology owing to a significant increase in homogeneous nucleation rate during the continued growth. The flowerlike polycrystalline TiO2 islands, either as discrete crystallites or as lined crystallite arrays, subsequently develop into a planar crystallite monolayer. In general, low-pH condition suppresses heterogeneous nucleation and growth; this allows a self-alignment of thin threadlike crystallites. In contrast, higher pH favors the heterogeneous nucleation and subsequent planar growth but results in polydispersivity of crystallites. All of these observations can be related to the hydrolysis of TiF4 and formation of Si-O-Ti and Ti-O-Ti linkages. In particular, localized HF concentration enrichment resulting from the TiF4 hydrolysis is responsible for the sequential lined crystallite formation and planar-branching, as well as creation of unsaturated surface bonds of fused glass for heterogeneous nucleation. High nucleation densities have been achieved by mechanical and chemical treatments, and nanocrystalline TiO2, thin films have been prepared using etched substrates.

Abstract:Long-term stable superhydrophilic films without UV irradiation consisting of hierarchical raspberrylike metal-ion-doped TiO(2) hollow spheres were fabricated by a simple spinning-coat method. The hierarchical surface morphology of metal-ion-doped TiO(2) hollow spheres can be programmed from "smooth", "moderate roughness" to "roughness" by adjusting the molar ratio of Co(2+) ions to Zn(2+) ions. Our results show that the substitution Co(2+) and Zn(2+) for Ti(4+) has effect on the phase transformation from anatase to rutile and further lead to different papillas on the surface of hollow nanospheres. And their films consisting of corresponding hollow nanospheres can be controlled from hydrophilic to superhydrophilic: 28, 7, and 0°. Therefore, our works open an avenue to design hierarchical surface morphology of nanospheres and further fabricate antifogging superhydrophilic films.

Abstract:Poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) and polyethylene glycol/polyacrylic acid as templates and acrylic acid as an inhibitor were used to prepare TiO2 nanoparticles. Hydrogel with low speed of absorption and network structure suppressed the speed of hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate and growth rate of TiO2 nanoparticles. The as-prepared titanium dioxide nanoparticles have anatase phase structure with a narrow size distribution. As compared with poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid), polyethylene glycol/polyacrylic acid has lower expansion rate of water-absorption and higher stability of precursor solution. Using microfluidic process, precursor solution of polyethylene glycol/polyacrylic acid is chosen to prepare TiO2 microspheres. These as-prepared TiO2 microspheres have a uniform size distrubition and good sphericity, which crystal structure is anatase phase after calcination.

Abstract:In this paper, honeycomb-like regular TiO2 nanoporous films deposited on different substrates including ITO glass and silicon wafer are fabricated by combining a nanoimprint technique with a sol-gel method. A novel soft polymer mold containing a thin layer of polymethylmethacrylate and a thicker layer of polydimethylsiloxane, which is obtained from an anodic aluminum oxide template, is carried out for the nanoimprint process. TiO2 precursor solution prepared by the sol-gel processing is used as the nanoimprinted material. After imprinting, the polydimethylsiloxane back layer is easily peeled off before the polymethylmethacrylate mold is chemically removed to avoid any demolding problem. The SEM images show that the honeycomb-like regular nanostructure of the initial anodic aluminum oxide template can be preserved completely on TiO2 via this method, and the XRD results indicate that there is a crystalline transition from amorphous to anatase of TiO2 after 450 degrees C heat treatment.
Fabrication and Super-Hydrophilic Property of Transparent Tio2/Sio2 Film from Sol-Gel Process

Abstract:A series of transparent and super-hydrophilic TiO2/SiO2 composite films with high adhesion to the glass were fabricated by dipping methods. The sol was prepared using peroxotitanium complex (PTC) as precursor by sol-gel process at low temperature. The properties of transmittance, hydrophility and adhesion were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, water contact angle and the tape test, and the structure was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The relationship of structure, surfactant and the compound action of TiO2/SiO2 was investigated. The results indicated that the fabricated films achieved excellent transmittance to slide glass of over 90%. Because of the poor adhesion of pure TiO2 film, the TiO2/SiO2 composite film with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the surfactant was prepared. The tape test indicated that the composite film had a steady adhesion on the surface of glass. At the same time, the water contact angle of the films was blow 5° after exposed to the UV light. Furthermore, the glass insulators with TiO2/SiO2 composite film were placed in the outdoor environment, and it showed self-cleaning ability after water drenching. It was proved from the experiments that the transparent TiO2/SiO2 hybrid films with self-cleaning property possessed potential application in the fields of outdoor glass constructions, suspended glass disk insulators and auto windshields.
Active Antifogging Property of Monolayer SiO2 Film with Bioinspired Multiscale Hierarchical Pagoda Structures

Abstract:Antifogging surfaces with hydrophilic or even superhydrophilic wetting behavior have received significant attention due to their ability to reduce light scattering by film-like condensation. However, a major challenge remains in achieving high-speed antifogging performance and revealing the hydrophilic-based antifogging mechanism of glass or other transparent materials under aggressive fogging conditions. Herein, with inspiration from the fog-free property of the typical Morpho menelaus terrestris butterfly (Butler, 1866) wing scales, a monolayer SiO2 film with multiscale hierarchical pagoda structures (MHPSs) based on glass substrate was designed and fabricated using an optimized biotemplate-assisted wet chemical method without any post-treatments. The biomimetic monolayer film (BMF) composed of nanoscale SiO2 3D networks displayed excellent antifogging properties, which is superior to that of the glass substrate itself. The MHPS-based BMF even kept high transmittance (∼95%) under aggressive fog conditions, and it almost instantaneously recovered to a fog-free state (<5 s). Moreover, the underlying active antifogging strategy gathering initial fog capture and final antifog together was revealed. The fogdrops spontaneously adhered on the BMF surface and rapidly spread along the MHPSs in an anisotropic way, which made the fogdrops evaporate instantaneously to attain an initial fog-free state, leading to an efficient active antifogging performance. These properties mainly benefit from the synergistic effect of both hydrophilic chemical compositions (nanoscale SiO2) and physical structures (biomimetic MHPSs) of the BMF. High-speed active antifogging performance of the glass materials enabled the retention of a high transmittance property even in humid conditions, heralding reliable optical performance in outdoor practical applications, especially in aggressive foggy environments. More importantly, the investigations in this work offer a promising way to handily design and fabricate quasi-textured surfaces with multiscale hierarchical structures that possess high-performance physicochemical properties.

Abstract:Nanoscale SiO2-TiO2 composite thin films with the thickness of about 100 nm were prepared by sol-gel method at room temperature in air. The chemical states of the elements on the surface and near the surface were measured by XPS. The results showed that the Ti on/near the surface of the thin films existed not only as TiO2 but also as Ti2O3. Part of the TiO2 was changed to Ti2O3 after UV irradiation. The crystalline structure of the TiO2 in the SiO2-TiO2 thin films was anatase with the crystallite size of 14–20 nm. It was found that the thin film prepared at room temperature in air has good superhydrophilic property and has strong adherence to the substrate.

Abstract:We report a new, novel and universal method to fabricate high-quality titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofilms on different substrates by a solid phase growth process of ion implantation and subsequent annealing in oxygen atmosphere. Ti ions were implanted into fused silica, soda lime glass, Z-cut quartz, or (0001) α-sapphire by a metal vapor vacuum arc (MEVVA) ion source implanter to fluences of 0.75, 1.5 and 3 × 10(17) ions cm(-2) with a nominal accelerating voltage of 20 kV. To understand the influence of the annealing temperature, time, and substrate on the formation and phase transformation of the TiO2 nanofilms, the Ti-ion-implanted substrates were annealed in oxygen atmosphere from 500 to 1000 °C for 1-6 h. The formation of TiO2 nanofilms resulted from the slow out-diffusion of implanted Ti ions from the substrates which were then oxidized at the surfaces. The thickness and phase of the nanofilms can be tailored by controlling the implantation and annealing parameters. Since the TiO2 nanofilms are formed under high temperature and low growth rate, they show good crystallinity and antibacterial properties, with good film adhesion and stability, suggesting that the TiO2 nanofilms formed by this method have great potential in applications such as antibacterial and self-cleaning transparent glass.

Abstract:The superhydrophobic flower-like OTS-SiO2 particles with tunable size were synthesized for application in anti-icing technology, in which the nanosilica fibers were grown on surface of SiO2 sphere. Furthermore, the anti-icing process of flower-like OTS-SiO2 particles was investigated by a high speed video and thermal infrared imaging equipment. It was found that the flower-like OTS-SiO2 particles with a diameter of 300.0 nm showed best anti-icing ability, in which the frozen time of water droplets could be prolonged to 564.0 s at −25.0℃. The good anti-icing ability was attributed to micro-nano hierarchical structure and surface modification of flower-like OTS-SiO2 particles. The work has an important guiding implication for the subsequent design and preparation of superhydrophobic particles for application in anti-icing technology.
