Abstract:As a promising non-precious catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), which is known to contain highly active edge sites and an inert basal plane, has attracted extensive interest. More recently, its amorphous counterpart has been found to have a higher HER activity, making it important to explore the effect of crystallinity on the HER performance of monolayer MoS2. However, the posed technological challenges of preparing crystallinity tunable 2H–MoS2 monolayers hinder their further study. In this work, we report the successful synthesis of crystallinity-dependent MoS2 monolayers through liquid exfoliation of the corresponding crystallinity-controllable bulk precursors. Excellent cocatalytic performances of the proposed MoS2 monolayers for the photocatalytic HER were achieved and determined by their crystallinity. An apparent quantum efficiency as high as 71.6% can be achieved for the lowest crystalline monolayer MoS2 over cadmium sulfide under visible light irradiation at 420 nm. This work provides a facile way to synthesise crystallinity controllable MoS2 monolayers and elucidates that the HER activity can be further enhanced through crystallinity engineering, providing a new strategy to enhance the HER activity of monolayer MoS2.

Abstract:Through a facile and effective strategy by employing lithium molten salts the controlled synthesis of 2H- and 1T-MoS2 monolayers with high-yield production is achieved. Both phases of MoS2 monolayers exhibit high stabilities. When used as a catalyst for hydrogen evolution, these phased MoS2 monolayers deliver respective advantages in the field of electro- and photo-catalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) presents a promising nonprecious catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) that has attracted extensive interest, but it still lacks an effective way to advance the utilization, in particular the basal plane of freestanding 2H-MoS2 for HER. Herein, we report a rational design of freestanding 2H-MoS2 monolayers to maximize the synergistic activity for HER by combining crystallinity engineering and cobalt substitution. Electrochemical measurements and density functional theory calculations indicate that the combination of crystallinity engineering and cobalt substitution in monolayer 2H-MoS2 can not only introduce massive defects that act as new active sites but also activate and make use of the basal plane, which is responsible for the much enhanced HER activity compared to independent crystallinity engineering or cobalt substitution. Impressively, when integrated with a photoharvester cadmium sulfide for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, the synergistic effect also promotes an excellent cocatalytic performance of monolayer 2H-MoS2 that even higher than platinum (Pt). This study potentially provide new avenues for designing more efficient MoS2-based and other layered materials with enhanced HER performance.

Abstract:We report amorphous MoSxCly as a high-performance electrocatalyst for both electrochemical and photoelectrochemical hydrogen generation. This novel ternary electrocatalyst is synthesized via chemical vapour deposition at temperatures lower than those typically used to grow crystalline MoS2 nanostructures and structurally characterized. The MoSxCly electrocatalysts exhibit stable and high catalytic activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction, as evidenced by large cathodic current densities at low overpotentials and low Tafel slopes (ca. 50 mV decade(-1)). The electrocatalytic performance can be further enhanced through depositing MoSxCly on conducting vertical graphenes. Furthermore, MoSxCly can be directly deposited on p-type silicon photocathodes to enable efficient photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Silicon micropyramids with n(+)pp(+) junctions are demonstrated to be efficient absorbers for integrated solar-driven hydrogen production systems enabling significant improvements in both photocurrent and onset potential. When conformally coated with MoSxCly, a catalyst that has excellent catalytic activity and high optical transparency, the highest photocurrent density for Si-based photocathodes with earth-abundant catalysts is achieved.

Abstract:In most cases, layered transition metal dichalcogenides (LTMDs), containing metallic phases, show electrochemical behavior different from their semiconductor counterparts. Typically, two-dimensional layered metallic 1T-MoS2 demonstrates better electrocatalytic performance for water splitting compared to its 2H counterpart. However, the characteristics of low metallic phase concentration and poor stability limit its applications in some cases. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and efficient bottom-up wet-chemistry strategy for the large-scale synthesis of nanoscopic ultrathin Mo1–xWxS2 nanosheets with enlarged interlayer spacing and high metallic phase concentration. Our characterizations, including X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS), high-angle annular dark-fieldscanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the metallic ultrathin ternary Mo1–xWxS2 nanosheets exhibited distorted metal–metal bonds and a tunable metallic phase concentration. As a proof of concept, this optimized catalyst, with the highest metallic phase concentration (greater than 90%), achieved a low overpotential of about–155 mV at a current density of –10 mA/cm2, a small Tafel slope of 67 mV/dec, and an increased turnover frequency (TOF) of 1.3 H2 per second at an overpotential of –300 mV (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)), highlighting the importance of the metallic phase. More importantly, this study can lead to a facile solvothermal route to prepare stable and high-metallicphase-concentration transition-metal-based two-dimensional materials for future applications.

Abstract:Phase and defect engineering of the heterostructured MoS2@TiO2 nanoporous film is investigated to achieve a broad solar spectrum light absorption and high solar water splitting efficiency. The phase transition from the semiconducting 2H-MoS2 to the metallic 1T-MoS2 is achieved by a hydrothermal exfoliation treatment. Experimental studies elucidate that the solar water splitting activity is greatly improved by forming 1T-MoS2 along with increasing S-vacancies because of the significantly enhanced surface plasmon resonance. The mixed-phase MoS2@TiO2 film shows a high H-2 yield rate of 308 mu mol h(-1) cm(-2) and long-term durability for 30 h, which is superior to the state-of-the-art catalysts for solar water splitting. This study offers a universal and efficient avenue to rationalize the plasmonic catalysts for solar water splitting and other energy and environmental applications.

Abstract:Monolayer MoS2 (WS2) nanosheets have triggered tremendous interest due to their fascinating unique properties, but high-yield production of single-layer MoS2 (WS2) still remains an enormous challenge and of great interest. Herein, we report a facile efficient partial etching strategy to tailor thickness and lateral size of MoS2 (WS2) so as to increase the fraction of edges, which remarkably enhanced the yield of monolayer MoS2 (20%) and WS2 (12%) nanosheets by liquid phase exfoliation. As a proof of concept, the exfoliated monolayer MoS2 (WS2) nanosheets were applied as the cocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Notably, the optimized hybrids exhibit excellent hydrogen evolution performance, which are over 31-fold (MoS2/CdS) and 47-fold (WS2/CdS) higher that of bare CdS counterpart, respectively. Hence, this work not only may pave the new way for the high-yield production of transition-metal dichalcogenides monolayers by liquid phase exfoliation, but also provide the possibility for the further efficiently exfoliating other two-dimension layered materials.

Solution-Processable Microstructuring of 1T'-Phase Janus MoSSe Monolayers for Boosted Hydrogen Production

Abstract:Janus monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer versatile applications due to their tunable polymorphisms. While previous studies focused on conventional 2H-phase Janus monolayers, the scalable synthesis of an unconventional 1T' phase remains challenging. We present a novel solution strategy for fabricating Janus 1T'-MoOSe and MoSSe monolayers by growing sandwiched Se-Mo-O/S shells onto Au nanocores. The Janus Au@1T'-MoSSe catalyst exhibits superior electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity compared to 1T'-MoS2, -MoSe2, and -MoOSe, attributed to its unique electronic structure and intrinsic strain. Remarkably, photoexciting the nanoplasmonic Au cores further enhances the HER via a localized surface plasmon (LSP) effect that drives hot electron injection into surface sulfur vacancies of 1T'-MoSSe monolayer shells, accelerating proton reduction. This synergistic activation of anion vacancies by internal strain and external light-induced Au LSPs, coupled with our scalable synthesis, provides a pathway for developing tailorable polymorphic Janus TMDs for specific applications.

Abstract:Synthesizing transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers through the liquid exfoliation of bulk crystals in low boiling point polar micromolecular solvents, such as water, is paramount for their practical application. However, the resulting hydrodynamic forces only appear on the crystal edges due to the mismatch in surface tension between the polar micromolecular solvents and the bulk crystals and are insufficient to overcome the strong van der Waals attraction between adjacent microscale layers. Herein, we present the novel strategy of engineering the lateral size of TMDC (MoS2 and WS2) crystals in the nanoscale to increase the fraction of edges, leading to their direct and ready exfoliation in polar micromolecular solvents, even in pure water, to produce monolayer MoS2 and WS2 nanosheets in high yield. To examine one of their important applications, their catalytic hydrogen evolution activities were evaluated when used as cocatalysts with a photoharvester semiconductor (cadmium sulfide, CdS) in a reaction driven by solar energy. These exfoliated MoS2 (WS2) monolayers exhibited superior cocatalytic performance in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Notably, the cocatalytic performance of monolayer WS2 nanosheets is even higher than that of platinum (Pt), which is a state-of-the-art catalyst for catalytic hydrogen evolution. This work elucidates the importance of decreasing the lateral size of layered crystals to significantly enhance their exfoliability, providing a new strategy for the large-scale preparation of nanoscale TMDC monolayers by liquid exfoliation.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is regarded as a perfect catalyst for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the active sites are usually concealed due to the unique two dimensional structure of MoS2. Herein, we propose a facile surface engineering modus to improve the HER activity of MoS2. This strategy is demonstrated by in-situ growth of amorphous MoS2 layer on the molybdenum phosphide (MoP) nanoparticles anchored on the carbon nanotubes (MoS2/MoP/CNT). The HER activity is significantly promoted both through the defect engineering of amorphous MoS2 and the synergistic effect between the MoS2 and MoP phases. The MoS2/MoP/CNT sample presents significantly higher HER performance than the pure phase of MoP/CNT and MoS2/CNT samples, requiring overpotentials of 73 and 141 mV to drive a current density of 10 and 100 mA cm-2.

Abstract:The layered materials have demonstrated great prospects as cost-effective substitutes for precious electrocatalysts in hydrogen evolution reaction. Research efforts have been devoted to synthesizing highly conductive MoS2 with the substantial cardinal plane and edge active sites. Here, we successfully synthesized a hierarchical 1T/2H-MoS2 with sodium ion insertion via a facile hydrothermal method. The contents of the 1T-phase can be flexibly controlled by different hydrothermal temperatures (160 oC ∼ 200 oC). And the modified uniformly dispersed 1T/2H-MoS2 nanospheres with different d spacings were designed to enhance the electrocatalytic efficiency by adding SiO2 and through the ion exchange process of NaOH and HF solution. The as-synthesized Na+ intercalated 1T-MoS2 nanosphere with an expanded interlayer of 0.95 nm obtained at 160 oC exhibits a prominent electrocatalytic performance of hydrogen evolution reaction with a comparable overpotential of 255 mV and a remarkably small Tafel slope of 44 mV/decade. Therefore, this study provides a facile and controllable strategy to yield interlayer-expanded 1T-MoS2 nanospheres, making it a potentially competitive hydrogen evolution catalyst for the hydrogen cell.

Abstract:Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) are widely used as photocathodes because of their large electrochemically available surface-area density and inherent ability to decouple light absorption from the transport of minority carriers. In order to minimize overpotential for solar-driven hydrogen (H2) production, a combination of an ultrathin molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) layer with SiNWs as photocathode has attracted much attention. Herein, for the first time, this study presents the synthesis of a composite photocathode via direct growth of ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets on SiNWs (referred to as SiNWs/MoS2) by one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Due to the high surface-area density of the arrays of SiNWs, the discontinuous MoS2 nanosheets grown on the SiNWs achieved a much higher density of active sites. Moreover, the coating of MoS2 on the SiNWs was found to protect the photocathode during the photoelectrochemical (PEC) reaction. A high efficiency with photocurrent jsc of 16.5 mA cm-2 (at 0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) and an excellent stability over 48 h of PEC operation were achieved under a simulated 1 sun irradiation.

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of monolayer MoS2 is essential for fulfilling the application potentials of MoS2 in optoelectronics and valleytronics, etc. Herein, we report the scalable growth of high quality, domain size tunable (edge length from ∼ 200 nm to 50 μm), strictly monolayer MoS2 flakes or even complete films on commercially available Au foils, via low pressure chemical vapor deposition method. The as-grown MoS2 samples can be transferred onto arbitrary substrates like SiO2/Si and quartz with a perfect preservation of the crystal quality, thus probably facilitating its versatile applications. Of particular interest, the nanosized triangular MoS2 flakes on Au foils are proven to be excellent electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction, featured by a rather low Tafel slope (61 mV/decade) and a relative high exchange current density (38.1 μA/cm(2)). The excellent electron coupling between MoS2 and Au foils is considered to account for the extraordinary hydrogen evolution reaction activity. Our work reports the synthesis of monolayer MoS2 when introducing metal foils as substrates, and presents sound proof that monolayer MoS2 assembled on a well selected electrode can manifest a hydrogen evolution reaction property comparable with that of nanoparticles or few-layer MoS2 electrocatalysts.
Perovskite Microcrystals with Intercalated Monolayer MoS2 Nanosheets as Advanced Photocatalyst for Solar-Powered Hydrogen Generation

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting holds a key to realizing the hydrogen economy but faces a grand challenge, namely, the severe charge recombination causes low solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency. This work reports a new form of MAPbI 3 microcrystal (MAPbI 3-MC)/monolayer MoS 2 nanosheets (ML-MoS 2) composite photocatalyst with type II heterojunction to effectively suppress the charge recombination for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen generation via HI splitting. The ML-MoS 2/MAPbI 3-MC is made of a large-sized MAPbI 3-MC light harvester anchored with electrocatalytically active ML-MoS 2 nanosheets to form a type II heterojunction that possesses a strong built-in electric field aligned between the spatially well-defined MAPbI 3-MC and ML-MoS 2 nanosheets to empower the photocatalyst with superior capability to effectively promote the charge separation. The ML-MoS 2/MAPbI 3-MC brings the hydrogen generation performance of the perovskite-based photocatalysts to a new horizon with a champion STH efficiency of 1.09% and a record hydrogen generation activity of 13.6 mmol g −1 h −1 under visible light.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has drawn increasing attention due to its great potential for advanced electronics, photonics, optoelectronics, energy storage, catalysis and solar cell. However, high effective exfoliation for the mass production of 2D MoS2 is still a challenge. To improve the exfoliation efficiency of MoS2 nanosheets, a facile liquid-phase exfoliation strategy has been developed by using organic electrolyte solutions in this work. It is shown that the dispersion concentration of MoS2 nanosheets has been significantly enhanced in organic electrolyte solutions. For example, by adding sodium tartrate into dimethyl sulphoxide, the dispersion concentration of MoS2 nanosheets is 85 times that in neat dimethyl sulphoxide. About 80% of MoS2 nanosheets obtained in such a strategy is 1-4 layers and the nanosheets remain 2H phase structure. In addition, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of the as-prepared few-layer MoS2 nanosheets is evaluated. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate is as high as 0.5 mmolg-1 h-1, which is 71 and 10 times higher than that of bulk MoS2 and the 2H-MoS2 nanosheets, respectively, reported to date. Exfoliation mechanism investigation suggests that the size of cation and the intensity of Lewis basicity of anion in the salts have played an important role in the exfoliation of MoS2. The liquid exfoliation strategy reported here has great potential in the large-scale and high quality production of few-layer MoS2 nanosheets for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.
Synergetic Exfoliation and Lateral Size Engineering of MoS2 for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation.

Abstract:Generally, exfoliation is an efficient strategy to create more edge site so as to expose more active sites on molybdenum disulphide (MoS2 ). However, the lateral sizes of the resultant MoS2 monolayers are relatively large (≈50-500 nm), which retain great potential to release more active sites. To further enhance the catalytic performance of MoS2 , a facile cascade centrifugation-assisted liquid phase exfoliation method is introduced here to fabricate monolayer enriched MoS2 nanosheets with nanoscale lateral sizes. The as-prepared MoS2 revealed a high monolayer yield of 36% and small average lateral sizes ranging from 42 to 9 nm under gradient centrifugations, all exhibiting superior catalytic performances toward photocatalytic H2 generation. Particularly, the optimized monolayer MoS2 with an average lateral size of 9 nm achieves an apparent quantum efficiency as high as 77.2% on cadmium sulphide at 420 nm. This work demonstrates that the catalytic performances of MoS2 could be dramatically enhanced by synergistic exfoliation and lateral size engineering as a result of increased density of active sites and shortened charge diffusion distance, paving a new way for design and fabrication of transition-metal dichalcogenides-based materials in the application of hydrogen generation.
