Abstract:Two-dimensional layered WS2 sheets is used as the hole extraction layer (HEL) in organic solar cells (OSCs). We find that UV-ozone treatment of the chemically exfoliated WS2 sheets can significantly improve the device performance of the OSCs with the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of about 8.37%, which is comparable to the OSCs with the standard PEDOT: PSS as the HEL. We attribute the improvement to the incorporation of oxygen into the lattice of the WS2 sheets. The oxygen incorporation reduces the lattice vacancies of WS2 sheets and makes the WS2 partially oxidized and consequently improves the electrical properties of the WS2 sheets.

Abstract:As a promising non-precious catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), which is known to contain highly active edge sites and an inert basal plane, has attracted extensive interest. More recently, its amorphous counterpart has been found to have a higher HER activity, making it important to explore the effect of crystallinity on the HER performance of monolayer MoS2. However, the posed technological challenges of preparing crystallinity tunable 2H–MoS2 monolayers hinder their further study. In this work, we report the successful synthesis of crystallinity-dependent MoS2 monolayers through liquid exfoliation of the corresponding crystallinity-controllable bulk precursors. Excellent cocatalytic performances of the proposed MoS2 monolayers for the photocatalytic HER were achieved and determined by their crystallinity. An apparent quantum efficiency as high as 71.6% can be achieved for the lowest crystalline monolayer MoS2 over cadmium sulfide under visible light irradiation at 420 nm. This work provides a facile way to synthesise crystallinity controllable MoS2 monolayers and elucidates that the HER activity can be further enhanced through crystallinity engineering, providing a new strategy to enhance the HER activity of monolayer MoS2.

Abstract:MoS2 is 2D material applicable for electronics, photo-detectors, light-emitting diodes, and solar cells. Since these applications operate at elevated temperatures, determining and controlling the environmental stability of MoS2 is essential. This study uses Raman spectroscopic experiments at elevated temperatures to observe reversible and irreversible changes in 2D MoS2 films with varying thickness, morphology, and substrate to explore the limits of its thermal stability. Molecular dynamics simulations and in-situ X-ray diffraction confirm that thermal expansion causes the Raman reversible spectral shifts. Further analysis reveals irreversible spectral shifts associated with oxidation and strain effects caused by oxidation with two distinct modes. The former is due to the general homogenous thinning of layers from the top layer down through randomly spaced sulfur vacancies. The latter is due to inhomogeneous oxidation, which known to occur as localized pitting at grain boundaries, void formation from nucleation centers, or stress corrosion cracking starting from edges under strain. Segregation of doping and strain contributions confirms higher strain in the edges. Annealing increases the spread of the strain distribution. These results highlight the critical role of strain, resulting from thermal expansion coefficient mismatch between substrates and 2D MoS2 films, on their environmental stability.

Abstract:2D organic semiconductor crystals (2DOSCs) have extraordinary charge transport capability, adjustable photoelectric properties, and superior flexibility, and have stimulated continuous research interest for next-generation electronic and optoelectronic applications. The prerequisite for achieving large-area and high-throughput optoelectronic device integration is to fabricate high-resolution 2DOSC arrays. Patterned substrate- and template-assisted self-assembly is an effective strategy to fabricate OSC arrays. However, the film thickness is difficult to control due to the complicated crystallization process during solvent evaporation. Therefore, the manufacturing of 2DOSC arrays with high-resolution and controllable molecular-layer numbers through solution-based patterning methods remains a challenge. Herein, a two-step strategy to produce high-resolution layer-controlled 2DOSC arrays is reported. First, large-scale 2DOSCs with well-defined layer numbers are obtained by a solution-processed organic semiconductor crystal engineering method. Next, the high-resolution layer-controlled 2DOSC arrays are fabricated by a polydimethylsiloxane mold-assisted selective contact evaporation printing technique. The organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on 2DOSC arrays have high electrical performance and excellent uniformity. The 2,6-bis(4-hexylphenyl)anthracene 2DOSC arrays-based OFETs have a small variation of 12.5% in mobility. This strategy can be applied to various organic semiconductors and pattern arrays. These demonstrations will offer more opportunities for 2DOSCs for integrated optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is an alternate absorber layer in 2D solar cells owing to its potential of proficient sunlight harvesting. The optimum electrical and optical properties of MoS2 validate it as a suitable photovoltaic absorber material. This work investigates the performance of 2D (and multi-layer) MoS2-based vertically stacked solar cell by numerical simulation process using one dimensional Solar Cell Capacitance Simulator (SCAPS). Two device configurations based on Schottky junction (ITO/n-MoS2/Au) and pn junction (ITO/n-MoS2/p-MoS2/Au) have been theoretically analyzed. The feasibility of ultra-thin transparent solar cells is also demonstrated, which is motivating from a technological outlook. Initially, the properties of the active layers are optimized to give the highest performance. The findings are explained on the basis of band alignment between the electrodes and the different layers. The potential barrier developed at the interface of different materials governs the output of the cells. The calculations forecast the material properties, which need to be tuned to fabricate solar cells with enhanced efficiency. After optimization, the highest efficiency obtained for single n-MoS2-based solar cell is 10.22%, while for the pn junction solar cell it is 16.86%. The optimized cells exhibit high open circuit voltages of ~ 1.2 V, which is an essential factor for commercial realization of solar cells. Lastly, the performance of transparent solar cells based on thin 2D MoS2 films has been predicted which showcases the efficiency in the range of 0.78-4.36%. These homo-junction device investigations of solely MoS2 layer along with employment of a strict control on the defects during deposition and fabrication of MoS2-based solar cells can ensure better performance of the device. Thus, it can open ways to develop next generation feasible solar cells with higher power density as compared to existing technology.

Self-assembled Behaviors of Desulphurized $MoS_2$ Monolayer Sheets

Abstract:Self-assembled topological structures of post-processed two-dimensional materials exhibit novel physical properties distinct from those of their parent materials. Herein, the critical role of desulphurization on self-assembled topological morphologies of molybdenum disulfide ($MoS_2$) monolayer sheets is explored using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. MD results show that there are differences in atomic energetics of $MoS_2$ monolayer sheets with different desulphurization contents. Both free-standing and substrate-hosted $MoS_2$ monolayer sheets show diversity in topological structures such as flat surface, wrinkles, folds and scrolls, depending on the desulphurization contents, planar dimensions and ratios of length-to-width of $MoS_2$ monolayer sheets. Particularly, at the critical desulphurization contents, they roll up into nanotube morphology, consistent with previous experimental observations. Moreover, the observed differences in the molecular morphological diagrams between free-standing and substrate-hosted $MoS_2$ monolayer sheets can be attributed to unique interatomic interactions and van der Waals interactions in them. The study provides important insights into functionalizing structural morphological properties of two-dimensional materials, e.g., $MoS_2$, via defect engineering.

Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are potential candidates for clean energy conversion materials to address the global energy crisis and environmental issues. In this work, we have comprehensively studied the geometrical, electronic, and optical properties of M2CO2/MoX2 (M = Hf, Zr; X = S, Se, Te) vdW heterostructures, as well as their applications in the fields of photocatalytic and photovoltaic using density functional theory calculations. The lattice dynamic and thermal stabilities of designed M2CO2/MoX2 heterostructures are confirmed. Interestingly, all the M2CO2/MoX2 heterostructures exhibit intrinsic type-II band structure features, which effectively inhibit the electron-hole pair recombination and enhance the photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the internal built-in electric field and high anisotropic carrier mobility can separate the photo-generated carriers efficiently. It is noted that M2CO2/MoX2 heterostructures exhibit suitable band gaps in comparison to the M2CO2 and MoX2 monolayers, which enhance the optical-harvesting abilities in the visible and ultraviolet light zones. Zr2CO2/MoSe2 and Hf2CO2/MoSe2 heterostructures possess suitable band edge positions to provide the competent driving force for water splitting as photocatalysts. In addition, Hf2CO2/MoS2 and Zr2CO2/MoS2 heterostructures deliver a power conversion efficiency of 19.75% and 17.13% for solar cell applications, respectively. These results pave the way for exploring efficient MXenes/TMDCs vdW heterostructures as photocatalytic and photovoltaic materials.

Abstract:The efficiency of photocatalyst depends largely on the accessibility of reaction species to the active centre, the electron transfer and geometric matching between the active surface of catalyst and reaction species. In this work, we successfully synthesized and designed one two-dimensional Mn(II) MOF with [Mn2(H2L1)(H2O)2(DMF)2]n·(CH3CH2OH)n (HSTC 3) by using MnCl2·4H2O and 5,5'-(anthracene-9,10-diyl)diisophthalic acid (H4L1), which adjacent layers are stacked with weak interaction, and the huge gap leads to the interpenetration between layers to form a 2D + 2D → 3D interpenetration frame. Based on the particularity of the structure of HSTC 3, ultrasonic wall breaking methods was tried to successfully peel HSTC 3 into nanosheet (HSTC 3-NS), thus achieving a significant improvement in a series of optoelectronic property due to expose more active centres for HSTC 3-NS. These results significantly enhance the photocatalytic selective oxidation of thioether. This study provides a new insight for the post synthesis modification of MOF photocatalyst and its application in photocatalytic organic synthesis.

Abstract:A novel MoS2 transparent counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells is reported. In order to enhance the catalytic activity of the electrode, active edge sites are created artificially by patterning holes on MoS2 atomic layers. Electrochemical analysis shows that the electrochemical activity is significantly improved after the patterning of holes. The photon-to-electron efficiency of the dye-sensitized solar cells based on MoS2 atomic layer counter electrodes is increased remarkably from 2% to 5.8% after the hole patterning.

Abstract:A vapor‐induced meniscus modulating approach is proposed for producing unidirectional and stable Marangoni flow to achieve high‐quality ultrathin 2D OSCs with precise layer definition, ensuring uniform mass transport and ordered molecular deposition. The solar‐blind polarized imaging capability is evaluated by fabricating a polarimetric image sensor array, which exhibits superior polarization imaging ability. 2D organic semiconductor crystals (2D OSCs) are vital for high‐performance electronic and optoelectronic devices owing to their unique material merits. However, it is still challenging to fabricate high‐quality and large‐scale ultrathin 2D OSCs with controllable molecular layers due to the disordered molecular deposition and uncontrollable mass transport in solution‐processing fabrication. Here, a vapor‐induced meniscus modulating strategy for preparing unidirectional and stable Marangoni flow to guide contactless meniscus evolution is reported, which ensures uniform mass transport and ordered molecular deposition to achieve high‐quality ultrathin 2D OSCs. Both the surface tension difference and the substrate wettability are critical to meniscus formation, which results in various meniscus deformation states and film morphologies. Based on the optimized vapor‐solvent system, ultrathin 2D OSCs of C8‐BTBT with precise layer definition are prepared controllably. The discrepancies in liquid film height and solute concentration are decisive in controlling the molecular scale thickness ranging from mono to a few layers. Moreover, the layer‐dependent electronic and optoelectronic properties of the ultrathin films are systematically investigated. Notably, high‐performance polarization‐sensitive solar‐blind photodetectors are achieved with a dichroic ratio of photocurrent up to 2.26, and the corresponding polarimetric image sensor exhibits superior solar‐blind polarization imaging capability thanks to the high crystalline quality.

In Situ Doping Effect in Monolayer MoS2 Via Laser Irradiation

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting materials with a single atomic layer display exceptional structural symmetry and band structures, making them the most promising candidates for investigating the spin-valley coupling effect and fabricating novel optoelectronic devices. Their atomic thinness also makes it easy to adjust their excitonic optical response through plasma treatment or thermal annealing. In this study, we present a simple technique for modifying the optical properties of monolayer MoS _2 by briefly exposing it to laser irradiation in ambient conditions. Initially, this exposure resulted in a nearly twofold increase in photoluminescence (PL) intensity, with the neutral exciton intensity increasing while the trion exciton intensity decreased. We propose that oxygen-related functional groups, such as O _2 and H _2 O from the surrounding air, adsorb onto MoS _2 and extract extra electrons, which enhances exciton emission while reducing trion emission. In a subsequent stage, both exciton intensities decreased as all extra electrons were depleted. Additionally, any structural distortions or potential damage were found to decrease the PL intensity, and these changes were linked to alterations in the Raman spectra.
Undoped MoO X with Oxygen-rich Vacancies as Hole Transport Material for Efficient Indoor/Outdoor Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Molybdenum oxide (MoO X ) films are typically prepared using a thermally-evaporated MoO 3 source (ev.MoO 3 ) as the hole transport layer for inverted organic solar cells (OSCs). However, their low conductivity and interface element diffusion severely limit their efficiency and stability. Herein, a novel and effective thermal evaporation method of the MoO 2 source to prepare undoped MoO X films with oxygen-rich vacancies and inhibitory atom diffusion properties electrode using ev.MoO 2 as the source, is reported. Electron spin resonance analysis indicates that ev.MoO 2 has a stronger oxygen vacancy signal peak than ev.MoO 3 , which contributes to its excellent conductivity. The inverted organic solar cells modified by ev.MoO 2 yielded a significant improvement in short-circuit current density ( J SC ) and fill factor (FF). The power conversion efficiency (PCE) increased from 16.65% in ev.MoO 3 to 17.08% in ev.MoO 2 under AM 1.5 G, which is one of the highest values ever reported for inverted OSCs. Furthermore, owing to the high transmittance and low trap density, the PCE increased from 20.18% with ev.MoO 3 OSC to 22.13% with ev.MoO 2 OSC under 500 lux. In addition, scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed that ev.MoO 2 can prevent the diffusion of Al from the electrode to the functional layers, resulting in a T80 exceeding 800 h under continuous illumination.

Single-crystalline Ultrathin 2D TiO2 Nanosheets: A Bridge Towards Superior Photovoltaic Devices

Abstract:Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) TiO2 nanostructures with atomic-level thickness are urgently demanded to achieve high-performance photocatalytic, photovoltaic, and electrochemical devices, by taking advantage of their unique characteristics of large surface-to-volume ratio, distinctive electronic properties, and intriguing chemical reactivity. Here, we present a molecular self-assembly of single-crystalline ultrathin 2D TiO2 nanosheets from a micelle-assisted solution. Via this synthesis strategy, highly-homogeneous ultrathin 2D TiO2 nanosheets with a thickness around 3 nm were obtained with relatively large production. The ultrathin 2D TiO2 nanosheet composite has a dominant anatase phase and a trace of rutile phase. It is interesting that highly reactive, non-equilibrium surfaces, such as the anatase {010} and rutile {001} facets, were observed in the fabricated nanosheets, which are very difficult to obtain by conventional synthesis methods but extremely useful for improving the performance of TiO2 nanostructures. Owing to the unique features of single-crystallinity, atomic-level thickness, highly reactive exposed surfaces, etc., the ultrathin 2D TiO2 nanosheets possess superior photochemical properties. With photoanodes made from ultrathin 2D TiO2 nanosheets, dye-sensitized solar cells showed significantly enhanced efficiency (8.28%) compared to ones with commercial Degussa P25 TiO2 nanoparticle anode (5.12%). This new family of graphene-like TiO2 nanosheets thus paves the way to further improving the performance of TiO2-based energy conversion and storage devices.
Regulating the reorganization energy and crystal packing of small-molecule donors enables the high performance of binary all-small-molecule organic solar cells with a slow film growth rate

Abstract:Difficulty in tuning the ideal phase morphology of interpenetrating network structures is the main reason for the relative inefficiency of all-small-molecule organic solar cells (ASM-OSCs). Achieving a desirable phase morphology is closely tied to both the molecular structure and film-formation process. Therefore, understanding the material's structural properties and film formation mechanism becomes crucial to improve the device performance. Herein, we have developed three small-molecule donors ( T25 , T26 and T27 ) through stepwise terminal-group and side-chain engineering. For the first time in the ASM-OSCs, we have analyzed the relationship between the material's structure, film formation mechanism and device performance by combining single crystal structure analysis and glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GD-OES) measurements. The results demonstrate that T27 exhibits a lower reorganization energy and a well-connected crystal packing, leading to a higher hole mobility compared to T25 and T26 . Device performance results and morphological analysis indicate that the T27 : Y6 -based ASM-OSCs yield enhanced efficiency compared to the T25- and T26- based ones. This enhancement can be attributed to the better charge generation and transport, suppressed charge recombination, more favorable molecular packing and slower film growth rate. These results not only provide insight into molecular designing, but also contribute to a deeper understanding of the film growth mechanism.

Abstract:Engineering the electronic structure of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials endows unique physical and chemical properties. Although developed modification strategies have significantly expanded the applications of 2D nanomaterials, exploring new strategies to regulate the electronic structure of 2D nanomaterials is also expected. Herein, we highlight a new strategy to engineer the electronic structure of 2D subnanoporous nanomaterials. As a proof of concept, based on controllable subnanopore engineering using molecular titanium-oxide incorporation, the electronic band structure of 2D graphitic carbon nitride (CN) nanosheets has been efficiently tuned with the enhancement of visible light absorption as well as separation and the migration rate of photo-excited charge carriers, exhibiting significantly improved photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. Our work opens a new door to engineering the intrinsic properties of 2D subnanoporous nanomaterials.

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are extensively utilized in optoelectronics, sensors, and battery storage due to their versatile properties. Among them, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets possess remarkable optical, electronic, and chemical properties. This study employed a cost-effective hydrothermal method to successfully synthesize high-quality 2D MoS2 nanosheets. Different characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, EDS, FTIR, Raman, UV-Vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were utilized to evaluate the structural, morphological, chemical and optical characteristics of the nanosheets. XRD analysis indicates the MoS2 nanosheets exhibit a hexagonal crystal structure. The formation of thin MoS2 nanosheets was observed through SEM images. The growth mechanism of the formation of MoS2 is discussed in detail. Different functional groups present in the material were analyzed using FTIR spectra. The difference in vibration modes analysed by Raman spectroscopy indicated the presence of layered nanosheets. The optical bandgap (2.20 eV) of the material was determined by analyzing its UV-Vis spectroscopy data using the Tauc plot. PL analysis indicates a direct transition between the upper valence and lower conduction bands, suggesting that the nanosheets were synthesized with high quality. These findings have opened new possibilities for the use of MoS2 nanosheets in various applications such as optoelectronics and sensing devices.

Abstract:Currently, organic solar cells (OSCs) are one of the most cutting-edge photovoltaic technologies due to their light-weight, semitransparent, and flexible advantages, which meet the needs of commercial applications. In order to fully develop the application potential of this novel class of photovoltaic cells, organic molecular design and device construction have all been playing significant roles. Research shows that two-dimensional (2D) layered materials with unique physical structure and excellent photoelectric properties can effectively optimize the device performance of OSCs. Although the exploration of various emerging 2D materials for use in OSCs has made considerable progress, there remain some crucial bottlenecks to be solved. In this review, the progress that has been made in the application of these 2D materials for OSCs in recent years is presented, including MXenes, black phosphorus (BP), and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), etc. The merits and demerits of 2D materials in OSCs application are summarized in detail. Ultimately, it outlines the commercial development direction of OSCs in the near future, and the significance of 2D materials in stable, low-cost, large-area, and flexible devices.

A Bio‐Inspired Molecular Design Strategy toward 2D Organic Semiconductor Crystals with Superior Integrated Optoelectronic Properties

Abstract:Inspired by the 2D bilayer lipid membranes in nature, a unique supramolecular "push–pull" synergetic strategy toward self-assembled 2D organic crystals (2DOCs) is proposed in this work, which can effectively suppress the interlayer 3D stacking while maintaining the assembly of the intralayer for 2D growth. For this purpose, a model molecule PF-Py consisting of a planar supramolecular "attractor" and a nonplanar steric "repellor" is designed for the solution self-assembly process. Well-defined 2DOCs including crystal nanosheets and millimeter-sized crystal films with layered amphiphile-like packing are obtained, which is analogical to the cell membranes of living organisms. Thanks to the special packing mode, the 2DOCs have fascinating integrated photoelectric property, with high mobility of 7.8 × 10−2 cm2 V−1 s−1, high crystalline state photoluminescence quantum yield of 55%, and superior deep-blue laser characteristics with a low threshold of 5.51 µJ cm−2. This supramolecular synergetic strategy advances the design of 2D organic semiconductor crystals for high performance optoelectronics.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with layered structures provide a unique platform for exploring the effect of number of layers on their fundamental properties. However, the thickness scaling effect on the chemical properties of these materials remains unexplored. Here, we explored the chemically induced phase transition of 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) from both experimental and theoretical aspects and observed that the critical electron injection concentration and the duration required for the phase transition of 2D MoS2 increased with decreasing number of layers. We further revealed that the observed dependence originated from the layer-dependent density of states of 2H-MoS2 , which results in decreasing phase stability for 2H-MoS2 with increasing number of layers upon electron doping. Also, the much larger energy barrier for the phase transition of monolayer MoS2 induces the longer reaction time required for monolayer MoS2 as compared to multilayer MoS2 . The layer-dependent phase transition of 2D MoS2 allows for the chemical construction of semiconducting-metallic heterophase junctions and, subsequently, the fabrications of rectifying diodes and all 2D field effect transistors and thus opens a new avenue for building ultrathin electronic devices. In addition, these new findings elucidate how electronic structures affect the chemical properties of 2D TMDCs and, therefore, shed new light on the controllable chemical modulations of these emerging materials.
