Abstract:Two compounds (Tb1-xMny)MnO3-delta (W1, x = 0.089, y = 0.063; W2, x = 0.122, y = 0.102) have been synthesized by solid-state method and characterized using neutron diffraction and magnetic measurements. They crystallize in space group Pnma at room temperature and Pna2(1) at low temperature. W1 shows a sinusoidal antiferromagnetic order, and W2 shows both sinusoidal and canted commensurate antiferromagnetic orders. The magnetic moments of the commensurate antiferromagnetic order for W2 are antiferromagnetically coupled along the a- and c-axes, and ferromagnetically coupled along the b-axis in the Pna21 setting. Strong ferromagnetic response is induced by doping more Mn into the Tb site of (Tb1-xMny)MnO3-delta.

Abstract:Polycrystalline samples of the Lu1−xLaxMn2O5 solid solution system were synthesized under moderate conditions for compositions with x up to 0.815. Due to the large difference in ionic size between Lu3+ and La3+, significant changes in lattice parameters and severe lattice strains are present in the solid solution. This in turn leads to the composition dependent thermal stability and magnetic properties. It is found that the solid solution samples with x≤0.487 decompose at a single well defined temperature, while those with x≥0.634 decompose over a temperature range with the formation of intermediate phases. For the samples with x≤0.487, the primary magnetic transition occurs below 40K, similar to LuMn2O5 and other individual RMn2O5 (R=Bi, Y, and rare earth) compounds. In contrast, a magnetic phase with a ∼200K onset transition temperature is dominant in the samples with x≥0.634.

Abstract:Solid solutions of Pb1-xTbxTi1-xMnxO3 (0≤x≤0.10) were synthesized by a traditional solid state reaction and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction. The solutions crystallize in the P4mm space group at room temperature. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements were performed to obtain phase transition temperatures (Tc) for the samples, and these were found to decrease with an increase in the amount of doped Tb and Mn. The temperature dependent dielectric constant shows a peak close to the Tc, indicating that the corresponding phase transition is a ferroelectric phase transition. Magnetic measurements indicate that a paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition occurs at 25 and 29 K for Pb1-xTbxTi1-xMnxO3 with x=0.08 and x=0.10, respectively.

Abstract:Magnetic, electronic, and thermal transport properties of Eu0.55Sr0.45MnO3 have been experimentally studied. The compound is found to exhibit a complex magnetic behavior with the change of temperature and magnetic field. Without magnetic field, it stays in a Griffiths-like state in a wide temperature range above similar to 100 K, characterized by the presence of ferromagnetic (FM) clusters of the size of similar to 8 Mn ions, and an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state below similar to 100 K, evidenced by thermopower and heat conductivity. FM phase emerges and grows in the AFM matrix with applied field, resulting in a series of phase transitions from the paramagnetic (PM) state first to the AFM state, then to the FM and the AFM states upon cooling (similar to 0.8 T < H similar to 2.3 T). The AFM state is unstable under high fields, and the high- and low-temperature AFM transitions are depressed by the fields above similar to 1 and similar to 2.3 T, respectively. The FM transition is incomplete when the field is below similar to 1.5 T, leading to a coexistence of the FM and PM (or AFM) phases in the intermediate temperature range. A spin-glass-like behavior is observed in the AFM background below similar to 50 K. Significant response of resistance, thermopower, and heat conduction to magnetic transition, either FM or AFM transition, has been observed. Unlike the typical AFM manganites, for which usually a depression of thermal conduction occurs at the AFM state, the AFM transition in Eu0.55Sr0.45MnO3 enhances the thermal conduction. From the PM phase to the AFM phase and to the FM phase, thermal conductivity increases monotonically. A remarkable result of the present work is the different behaviors of thermopower and resistivity. The former displays a metallic behavior below a distinct temperature that is significantly lower than the metal-to-insulator transition temperature determined by resistivity. Furthermore, thermopower remains metallic while the resistivity shows up an upturn due to the AFM transition in the low-temperature range under the field of 1.5 T. Based on these data, a magnetic phase diagram is proposed.

Abstract:Zn 1 − x Mn x O nanoparticles synthesized by a combustion method with Mn concentration x up to 0.40 are carefully characterized by means of x-ray powder diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Single-phase solid solution Zn1−xMnxO is achieved with a solubility limit of ∼30 at. % Mn. An almost linear dependence of lattice constant on the Mn content is observed, indicating the homogeneous substitution of Mn2+ for the Zn2+ in wurtzite ZnO. Magnetization at T=5 K and H=5 T exhibits a maximum around the Mn doping concentration of xm=0.125. Room temperature ferromagnetism with low coercive field (Hc∼70±5 Oe) is obtained for the sample with x=0.01. The observed magnetic properties of Zn1−xMnxO can be well understood within the framework of the donor impurity band exchange model.

Abstract:Sn 1 − x Mn x O 2 nanocrystalline powders were synthesized by a wet chemical method (x⩽0.08). X-ray diffraction reveals that single-phase rutile Sn1−xMnxO2 was obtained for x up to about 0.06. Evolution of cell parameters, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, and quantitative evaluation of the magnetization data all indicate that Mn element acts as Mn4+ for x=0.01 and as Mn3+ for x=0.02 and 0.04 at room temperature, but as Mn3+ for all the samples at 5K. Magnetization data show that the average magnetic moment per Mn site decreases with increasing x at 5K, while the effective fraction of the Mn ions contributing to the magnetization decreases. The magnetic properties of the Sn1−xMnxO2 are discussed based on the competition between the free carrier mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction and antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction in the system.

Abstract:Bulk Cr1-x Mn x O2 samples are prepared by high pressure synthesis technology. The crystal structure, magnetic properties and electronic structure of the samples are investigated by experiments and theoretical calculation. The crystal structure of the samples are indexed to a rutile structure with space group P42/mnm. The lattice parameter a of the samples remains basically unchanged in accordance with Vegard's law, but the lattice parameter c decreases due to increasing Mn dopant content (x) as well as strong Metal–Metal bonding along the c-axis. The saturation magnetization of the Cr1-x Mn x O2 samples decreases with an increase in x. According to XPS analysis, there is electron transfer between Mn and Cr in Cr1-x Mn x O2. Mn exists as Mn2+ and Mn3+ions, and part of Cr is oxidized to Cr6+. Based on the XPS analysis, the magnetic moment of Cr1-x Mn x O2 is calculated and its value is in accordance with the experimental data.

Abstract:In this article, the precursors of CaCuxMn3-xMn4O12(x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4) were synthesized using wet-chemistry technique, and then samples were sintered in pure oxygen flow at 850°C and ambient pressure with KCl 10 wt% addition. The Rietveld refinements of powder X-ray diffraction patterns showed that all the samples were single phase with cubic symmetry, the space group [Formula: see text]. The lattice parameters a decreased with increasing Cu doping level x. The transport properties were characterized with DC four-probe technique. The results indicated that the crystal structure of samples were deformed and then influenced the transport properties of these manganese oxides. The MR ratios at 85 K and in the magnetic field of 5 Tesla increased with increasing x and reached the maximum at x = 1.0, then decreased with further increasing x. These results originated maybe from the intergrain tunneling of spin-polarized carriers and double-exchange effect.

Abstract:The solid solution (Dy1-xMnx) MnO3-delta (0.037 <= x <= 0.142) has been synthesized by the conventional solid-state method. Powder X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction reveal that all the samples crystallize in the space group Pnma. The magnetic and dielectric studies on Mn-doped DyMnO3 reveal existence of three anomaly behaviors in low temperature region. A transition from an incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering of Mn3+ spins at T-1 similar to 37 K, a lock-in transition at T-C1 similar to 18 K. The second antiferromagnetic transition at T-2 similar to 7 K, originating from the ordering of Dy moments with a slight Mn doping range of 0.037 <= x <= 0.087, and it disappears with 0.087 <= x <= 0.142 due to damage of the Dy spin ordering. Interestingly, the Mn doping in DyMnO3 suppresses the ferroelectric ordering, resulting in reduction in ferroelectric ordering temperatures, whereas an increase in antiferromagnetic transition temperatures has been observed. Structural, morphological, magnetic and electrical properties of La0.8Na0.2- x □ x MnO3 (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.15) manganites

Abstract:La0.8Na0.2-x □ x MnO3 (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.15) manganites were successfully synthesized using the solid-state route. X-ray diffraction was performed to check the samples' purity and phase structure. Scanning electron microscopy analysis reveals a decrease in the average grain size with an increase in the deficiency amount. Analysis of the temperature dependence of magnetization proved the presence of ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition in all the studied samples. The magnetization derivative (d2 M/dT 2) curves demonstrated a decrease in the transition temperature with an increase in the deficiency amount. Such experimental observations can be correlated with bandwidth evolution, which affected double-exchange interactions. It can be equally accounted for by the average grain size decrease. In this regard, the experimental measurements of effective paramagnetic moments revealed the existence of ferromagnetic correlations within the paramagnetic phase. Notably, different electrical findings were addressed. Indeed, the frequency dependence of electrical conductivity displayed the coexistence of two frequency slopes reflecting the presence of Jonscher's double power law for all the studied samples. A significant decrease in conductivity values was observed when the deficiency amount increased. This experimental observation could be assigned to the decrease in the grain size (conductor region). Such assumption was confirmed by the evolution of the grain boundary resistance with deficiency level. Indeed, a significant mounting in the grain boundary resistance values was obtained presenting the increase of the resistive region for x = 0.15. It is worth noting that the Curie temperature for the x = 0.10 sample was found to be close to room temperature (T C = 297 K). These findings make the La0.8Na0.1□0.1MnO3 compound a powerful candidate for many technological applications.

Abstract:The use of a sol–gel synthetic method allows the preparation, at temperatures as low as 873K, of single-phase perovskites in the potassium-doped lanthanide manganites La1−xKxMnO3+δ. Samples prepared at 1273K remain single phase and are constituted by submicrometer homogeneous particles, without deviation from nominal stoichiometries upon heating. These materials exhibit paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transitions at 230, 283, 338, and 344K for x=0.075, 0.10, 0.165, and 0.20, respectively. By measuring the sample magnetization as a function of field and temperature we have determined the magnetic entropy change associated with these transitions. It is suggested by the results that these materials can be utilized as suitable magnetic refrigerants with very large temperature span.

Abstract:Zn1−xMnxO crystallites were synthesized by hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction, UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra confirm the substitution of Zn site by Mn2+ ion. The nonmonotonic variation of band gap exhibits that the short-ranged interactions between the d electrons of Mn and the s and p electrons of the host bands are dominated at lower Mn concentration (x). EPR spectra show that Mn2+ is in exchange interaction at higher x. By using a Curie–Weiss equation on the EPR data, it is found that the dominant magnetic property is antiferromagnetic for higher x, and paramagnetic for lower x.

Abstract:The reaction of N-n-Bu4MnO4 with Mn(OAc)2·4H2O, pyridine and butyric acid in absolute EtOH leads to the high-yield formation of the oxo-centered trinuclear Mn complex, [Mn3O(O2CC3H7)6(C5H5N)3]·ClO4. The complex crystallizes in orthorhombic, space group Pna21 with a=19.588(7), b=20.194(6), c=12.491(5) Å. Variable temperature solid state magnetic susceptibility study shows that the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction is weak, and the exchange integral J=−12.36 cm−1.

Abstract:A simple chemical vapor deposition technique has been employed to realize Zn1-xMnxO hollow spherical structures with room temperature ferromagnetism. We propose a special experimental scheme for the appropriate growth temperature, which could not only realize effective evaporation of the source materials, but also make further vaporization of the Zn enclosed in the Mn-doped ZnO layer and avoid the formation of Mn-related oxides on the substrates. A series of controlled experiments have been carried out for better understanding the formation mechanism. The morphology, structure, and composition have been investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis, indicating that Mn2+ was successfully substituted into the Zn2+ site. Raman results show an additional mode (520-530 cm(-1)) in the doped samples due to the lattice defects triggered by Mn doping. Multipeak Gaussian fitting of the photoluminscence spectra exhibits an emission related to the d-d transition of Mn2+ from the ground state (6)A(1)(G) to the excited state E-4(G). The origin of the room temperature ferromagnetism has been attributed to the magnetic coupling between Mn atoms.
Preparation of La0.7Sr0.3Mn1+xOy (1 ⩽ X ⩽ 4) Thin Films by Chemical Solution Deposition: Dual Epitaxy and Possible Spinodal Growth

Abstract:La0.7Sr0.3Mn1+xOy (1⩽x⩽4) thin films were prepared by chemical solution deposition on LaAlO3 (001) single crystal substrates. The derived thin films were composed of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 and Mn3O4 phases when excess Mn content was used as compared to the stoichiometric La0.7Sr0.3MnO3, which could be attributed to a spinodal-like growth mechanism. Both La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 and Mn3O4 phases were epitaxial growth and full relaxation of stress. With increasing Mn content, Mn3O4 phase was squeezed out from matrix and tented to aggregate onto La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 surface. Two magnetic transitions were observed in composite thin films, showing no magnetic coupling between these two phases. Magnetoresistance was only enhanced slightly with increasing Mn content due to slightly enhanced interface effects. It is suggested that the spinodal-like growth will provide a novel route to construct new microstructures in thin films using chemical solution deposition.

Abstract:We report on structural, magnetic, dielectric, and thermodynamic properties of (Eu:Y)MnO3 for Y doping levels 0 <= x < 1. This system resembles the multiferroic perovskite manganites RMnO3 (with R= Gd, Dy, Tb) but without the interference of magnetic contributions of the 4f-ions. In addition, it offers the possibility to continuously tune the influence of the A-site ionic radii. For small concentrations x <= 0.1 we find a canted antiferromagnetic and paraelectric groundstate. For higher concentrations x <= 0.3 ferroelectric polarization coexists with the features of a long wavelength incommensurate spiral magnetic phase analogous to the observations in TbMnO3. In the intermediate concentration range around x = 0.2 a multiferroic scenario is realized combining weak ferroelectricity and weak ferromagnetism, presumably due to a canted spiral magnetic structure.

Abstract:In this article，hole-doped nonstoichiometric manganites La0.67Sr0.33-x□xMnO3 (x=0，0.05，0.1，0.15，0.2，0.25，0.3，0.33) with A-site vacancy were synthesized using the solid-state reaction technique and the effect of A-site vacancy on structure and transport properties were studied. Results from Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction patterns showed that all samples were single phase with space group R3c and there were no structural phase transition for vacancy content x ranging from 0 to 0.33. The lattice parameters and volume of unit cell vary distinctly with x. These variations maybe result from the uncertain occupation ratio of vacancies at A-sites and Mn-sites. The bond angle of Mn—O—Mn decreases with increasing x，which indicates the presence of further distortion of MnO6 octahedron. Electrical measurements of La0.67Sr0.33-x□xMnO3 showed that the samples exhibited a metallic-insulator phase transition for xTMI towards higher temperature. In the range of 0.25≤x≤0.33，the samples exhibit insulating behavior without metallic-insulator transition，and also the effect of the magnetic field is to lower the resistivity.
