Abstract:Magnetic microspheres (Fe3O4@PVIM@Zn(II)) composed of a high magnetic-response Fe3O4 core and a Zn(II)-immobilized cross-linked polyvinyl imidazole (PVIM) shell via reflux-precipitation polymerization and metal-ion affinity strategy were fabricated. Integrating the advantages of specific uptake and fast separation, Fe3O4@PVIM@Zn(II) was adopted as an ideal pathway for luteolin (LTL) recognition. As-prepared Fe3O4@PVIM@Zn(II) possessed core–shell structure, uniform size (200 nm), high magnetic responsiveness (32.6 emu g−1), and a very easy synthesis process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggested a strong interaction between the nitrogen heterocyclic ring of PVIM and Zn(II), which produced abundant binding sites for LTL. The batch mode experiments can be well described by pseudo-first-order kinetic models and a Langmuir isotherm. A rapid binding equilibrium (within 45 min) and large monolayer adsorption capacity (23.92 mg g−1) at 298 K were also observed. In addition, Fe3O4@PVIM@Zn(II) displayed remarkable selectivity to LTL; the purification process using Fe3O4@PVIM@Zn(II) can make purified LTL from approximately 85% to 94.26%. The antibacterial activity of purified LTL was outstanding by means of a Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC29213) resistance experiment. Considering its multiple merits, Fe3O4@PVIM@Zn(II) exhibited great potential for specific binding with natural products, such as flavonoids.

Abstract:In this study, a novel core-shell structured Fe3O4@TA@P(NVP-co-NIPAM) magnetic microsphere has been successfully developed for polyphenol extraction employing tannic acid (TA) directed copolymerization. The TA directing strategy guided copolymerization preferentially on the surface of the magnetic core and facilitated formation of the shell for coating the magnetic core. It was unveiled that the amount of TA, the ratio of the two monomers, and the amount of surfactant were critical for the preparation of the magnetic microspheres. The identity and proportion of the shell were analyzed by FT-IR and TGA. Magnetic hysteresis loop measurement confirmed the superparamagnetic nature and no loss of magnetization after coating. The prepared magnetic microspheres demonstrated outstanding absorption ability to typical polyphenols. Kinetic studies suggested that the adsorption behavior followed Langmuir absorption model. The developed magnetic microspheres should be useful for biological studies. The TA directing strategy would be valuable for synthesis of core-shell structured particles.

Abstract:In this study, 3-carboxyphenylboronic acid (CP)-functionalized amino-modified Fe3O4 (Fe3O4@NH2-CP, FNC) magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (FNC@MIPs) were synthesized and applied for the quick identification and selective separation of luteolin (LTL). The structure and morphology were characterized in detail by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and vibrating specimen magnetometry (VSM) methods. The FNC@MIPs had a homogeneous shape, excellent magnetic characteristics, quick binding kinetics, a high adsorption capacity, acceptable selectivity, and stable reusability. The solid-phase extraction parameters and preparation conditions were both optimized. Under optimized conditions, the maximal adsorption capacity was 14.26 mg g-1 and the imprinting factor was 3.62. Furthermore, the experimental kinetics data were best fitted with the pseudo-first-order model (R2 = 0.9877), and the Langmuir model could describe the adsorption process (R2 = 0.9979), suggesting a monolayer covering. The practical application of the sorbent for LTL detection in Lonicera japonica Thunb samples showed recoveries in the range of 84.5-108.7%. Therefore, the strategy offers a fresh avenue for the extraction and purification of LTL.

In Situ Precipitation: a Novel Approach for Preparation of Iron-Oxide Magnetoliposomes.

Abstract:Background: Conventional methods of preparing magnetoliposomes are complicated and inefficient. A novel approach for magnetoliposomes preparation was investigated in the study reported here.Methods: FeCl3/FeCl2 solutions were hydrated with lipid films to obtain liposome-encapsulated iron ions by ultrasonic dispersion. Non-encapsulated iron ions were removed by dialysis. NH3 center dot H2O was added to the system to adjust the pH to a critical value. Four different systems were prepared. Each was incubated at a different temperature for a different length of time to facilitate the permeation of NH3 center dot H2O into the inner phase of the liposomes and the in situ formation of magnetic iron-oxide cores in the liposomes. Single-factor analysis and orthogonal-design experiments were applied to determinate the effects of alkalization pH, temperature, duration, and initial Fe concentration on encapsulation efficiency and drug loading.Results: The magnetoliposomes prepared by in situ precipitation had an average particle size of 168+/-14 nm, zeta potential of -26.2+/-1.9 mV and polydispersity index of 0.23+/-0.06. The iron-oxide cores were confirmed as Fe3O4 by X-ray diffraction and demonstrated a superparamagnetic response. Encapsulation efficiency ranged from 3% to 22%, while drug loading ranged from 0.2 to 1.58 mol Fe/mol lipid. The optimal conditions for in situ precipitation were found to be an alkalization pH of 12, temperature of 60 degrees C, time of 60 minutes, and initial Fe concentration of 100 mM Fe3+ + 50 mM Fe2+.Conclusion: In situ precipitation could be a simple and efficient approach for the preparation of iron-oxide magnetoliposomes.

Abstract:In this work, COF-LZU1@PEI@Fe3O4 was synthesized by immobilization of COF-LZU1 onto the surface of polyethyleneimine-functionalized Fe3O4 nanoparticles (PEI@Fe3O4) and employed as an adsorbent for magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction of tetracyclines (TCs). COF-LZU1@PEI@Fe3O4 was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms analysis. The optimal extraction and desorption conditions were as follows: 15.00 mL sample solution (pH 7.0) extracted with 5.0 mg of adsorbent for 30 min at 30 °C, and then desorbed with 1.50 mL methanol/acetonitrile/0.02 mol L-1 oxalic acid solution (v/v, 1 : 2 : 7). Good linearities were obtained between the peak area and TC concentration ranging from 5-500 μg L-1 with correlation coefficients (R2) higher than 0.9992 and limits of detection lower than 0.51 μg L-1. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of intra-day and inter-day were less than 5.7% and 7.4%, respectively. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of TCs in environmental water samples with recoveries in the range of 87.0-113.8% and RSDs less than 5.1%, suggesting great potential of COF-LZU1@PEI@Fe3O4 for efficient extraction and analysis of trace TCs in water samples.

Abstract:A novel Fe_3O_4/acrylate-based magnetic adsorbent were prepared by suspension polymerization using divinybenzene as a crosslinker.The parameters for polymerization were n(methyl acrylate)∶n(divinybenzene)=17∶1,w(initiator)=1%,reaction temperature 75～80 ℃ and reaction time 6 h.This adsorbent was characterized by XRD,IR,TGA etc.Moreover,the adsorption performance of the adsorbent towards metal ions was investigated.The results showed that the diameter of the magnetic adsorbent was 35～55 μm and the content of Fe_3O_4 was 18%.The adsorption capacity increased with increasing pH.The maximum adsorption capacity(q_m) was 2.3 mmol/g for Hg~(2+),2.2 mmol/g for Cu~(2+) and 1.1 mmol/g for Ni~(2+).The adsorption rate constant calculated by Lagergrent equation was 0.023 min~(-1) for Hg~(2+),0.034 min~(-1) for Cu~(2+) and 0.036 min~(-1) for Ni~(2+).Regeneration of the adsorbent was achieved using 1 mol/L H_2SO_4 or 0.5 mol/L HNO_3.

Abstract:A simple strategy to fabricate magnetic porous microspheres of Fe(3)O(4)@poly(methylmethacrylate-co-divinylbenzene) was demonstrated. The magnetic microspheres, consisting of polymer-coated iron oxide nanoparticles, were synthesized by the modified suspension polymerization of methacrylate and divinylbenzene in the presence of a magnetic fluid. The morphology and the properties of the magnetic porous microspheres were examined by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, superconducting quantum interference device, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, and X-ray powder diffraction. The pore size distribution and the specific surface area of the microspheres were measured by nitrogen sorption and mercury porosimetry technique. As predicted from the previous knowledge, the magnetic porous microspheres possessed a high specific surface area using n-hexane as a porogen. It was further found that the amounts of divinylbenzene and methacrylate, the ratio of porogens, and the dosage of ferrofluids affect the specific surface area of the microspheres. Furthermore, the microspheres were applied to remove phenol from aqueous solutions. The results showed that the microspheres had a high adsorption capacity for phenol and a high separation efficiency due to their porous structure, polar groups, and superparamagnetic characteristic.

Abstract:To address the undesirably low porosity of phenolic resin, a new material termed magnetic mesoporous metal-phenolic coordination spheres (Fe3O4@Co-TA) was synthesized by chelating tannic acid (TA) with metal ions. Fe3O4@Co-TA was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, hysteresis loop (B-H) analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption-desorption. The results indicated that the new material comprises mesopores (2 nm and 3 nm) and exhibits a good magnetic response (44 emu/g). Combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), a novel method for the detection of crystal violet (CV) and leucocrystal violet (LCV) by magnetic solid-phase extraction was established. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the linear ranges of CV and LCV detection were 0.2‒60 μg/L and 0.04‒40 μg/L, the detection limits were 0.04 μg/L and 0.008 μg/L, and the enrichment factors were 435 and 460, respectively. Fe3O4@Co-TA was reused ten times without significant reduction of the extraction ability. This method was successfully used for the detection of CV and LCV in fish samples, providing an effective technique for food safety monitoring and quality control.

Abstract:A novel Fe3O4@MDN magnetic nanomaterial was successfully developed as a magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction adsorbent for the determination of triazole pesticide residuals in honey samples by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The macromolecular structure named MDN was coated on the surface of a copolymer synthesized with silyl reagents methacrylic acid-3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl ester (MPS) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) based on ferriferrous oxide (Fe3O4), whose characteristics were confirmed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The proposed magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction (MDSPE) method provided a rapid, environmentally friendly and magnetic stuff recyclable approach for the triazole pesticide analysis. By means of optimal conditions, the recoveries of 15 triazoles (spiked at 20 mu g kg(-1)) ranged from 90.5 to 105.9%. The method showed good linearity, sensitivity in the range of mu g per kilogram and repeatability (relative standard deviation below 6.8%, n = 5). The proposed method was confirmed to be a simple, rapid and efficient method for the analysis of triazole pesticide residuals in honey samples.

Abstract:A novel adsorbent(FADA)was obtained by modifying Fe_3O_4/poly(acrylate methyl ester) magnetic microspheres which were prepared by suspension polymerization using divinybenzene as a crosslinker.FADA was characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffraction patterns(XRD),infrared spectrometry(IR)and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).And the adsorption performance of FADA toward metal ions was investigated.The experimental results showed that the diameter of the magnetic adsorbent was 35～55 μm and the mass fraction of Fe_3O_4 in the FADA was about 18%.The isotherm adsorption data agreed with the Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacity of Hg~(2+),Cu~(2+)and Ni~(2+)were 2.3,2.2 and 1.1 mmol/g respectively. The adsorption rate constants of Hg~(2+),Cu~(2+)and Ni~(2+)determined by Lagergrent equation were 0.023,0.034 and 0.036 min~(-1)respectively.And the regeneration and reuse performance of FAD was satisfactory.

Abstract:A novel type of porous magnetic microsphere (Fe3O4@HCP) was firstly synthesized just via one-step Friedel-Crafts alkylation promoted by FeCl3. This universal and facile method to fabricate porous magnetic microspheres possesses distinct advantages such as cheap reactants, mild reaction conditions, a short reaction time and a simple post-treatment process. The core-shell spheres with a well-defined and uniform morphology possess a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area (770 m(2) g(-1)). Besides, the magnetization saturation value reaches up to 18 A m(2) kg(-1) which is high enough to separate Fe3O4@HCP from aqueous solution. Fe3O4@HCP possesses fast adsorption kinetics and an excellent adsorption capacity for organic dyes: methyl orange (211 mg g (1)) and fuchsin basic (231 mg g(-1)). The adsorption-saturated Fe3O4@HCP composites can be easily collected by an external magnetic field and reused at least 3 times after simple Soxhlet extraction and drying.

Abstract:Surface-imprinted nanoparticles with double recognition (DM-MIPs) are fabricated onto halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) for highly specific separation of natural flavone luteolin (LTL) under neutral condition. Specifically, a two-step strategy via consecutive surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) is employed to introduce inherent recognition of molecular imprinting and reversible covalent affinity of boronic acid ligands and immobilized Zn2+ into DM-MIPs. First, Zn2+-immobilized poly(vinyl imidazole) (PVLD) shell based on the HNTs via the first SI-ATRP is prepared to capture LTL by metal chelating. Then HNTs-supported surface imprinted nanoparticles are prepared using low pKa boronic acid monomer 4-(2-acrylamidoethylcarbamoyl)-3-fluorophenylboronic acid (AMC-FPBA) via the second SI-ATRP. Taking advantage of low apparent pKa of AMC-FPBA and large high-affinity binding site density, DM-MIPs possess a promising binding with cis-diol-containing LTL under neutral condition. In static adsorption, DM-MIPs show large LTL loading amount (83.42 mg g-1), fast capture kinetics, remarkable selectivity, and excellent recyclability at pH = 7.0. More importantly, by reducing the pH to 4.0, the loaded TLL can be simply released. As a proof of this concept, a commercially available LTL with 85% purity can be easily enriched and further purified, and the product exhibits the similar antibacterial performance with standard substance.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the synthesis and characterization of a luminomagnetic microspheres with core-shell structures (denoted as Fe3O4@ SiO2 @SiO2-Tb(PABA)3). The luminomagnetic microspheres were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and photoluminescence spectrophotometer (PL). The SEM observation shows that the microsphere consists of the magnetic core with about 400 nm in average diameter and silica shell doped with terbium complex with an average thickness of about 90 nm. It has a saturation magnetization of 15.8 emu/g and a negligible coercivity at room temperature and exhibits strong green emission peak from 5D4 --> 7F5 transition of Tb3+ ions. The luminomagnetic microspheres with good magnetic response and fluorescence probe property as well as water-dispersibility would have potential medical applications, such as time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (TR-FIA), fluorescent imaging, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Fabrication of Fe3O4@poly(methyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) microspheres via miniemulsion polymerization using porous microspheres as templates for removal of cationic dyes

Abstract:Magnetic polymer microspheres have been widely used in nucleic acid extraction, immunoassays, drug screening, compound identification, wastewater treatment and catalysis. However, the particle size and magnetic material content of magnetic polymer microspheres prepared by miniemulsion polymerization cannot be effectively controlled. In this work, the porous polymer microspheres prepared by the two-step seed swelling polymerization method were used as templates. Based on it, the miniemulsion polymerization of magnetic fluid was performed to obtain magnetic Fe3O4@poly(methyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (Fe3O4@P(MMA-co-GMA)) microspheres. TEM images showed that the magnetic Fe3O4@P(MMA-co-GMA) microspheres had diffuse structures. The magnetic material was scattered throughout the inside of the porous template polymer microspheres, and at the same time, polymer encapsulation of the magnetic material and functional modification of the surfaces for magnetic polymer microspheres were realized. Compared with the traditional template method, the method simplified the synthesis process, turning multiple steps into one step. Magnetic polymer microspheres with narrow particle size distribution, high magnetic material content, and different functionalized surfaces were prepared by the method. The magnetic Fe3O4@P(MMA-co-GMA) microspheres could be used to adsorb cationic dyes quickly and effectively. The results demonstrated that the maximum adsorption capacity for Nile blue was ~109.4 mg/g, and the maximum dye removal efficiency could reach 99.9%. In addition, Fe3O4@P(MMA-co-GMA) microspheres exhibited good stability and recyclability for Nile blue removal over seven cycles. Therefore, this work proposed a novel and facile strategy to prepare magnetic polymer microspheres, which exhibited significant potential application value in many fields.

Magnetic solid-phase extraction of benzoylurea insecticides by Fe3 O4 nanoparticles decorated with a hyper-cross-linked porous organic polymer

Abstract:A magnetic polytriphenylamine porous organic polymer was prepared through simple self-polycondensation of triphenylamine followed by coprecipitation with Fe2+ and Fe3+ . It was applied as a magnetic adsorbent for the extraction of six benzoylurea insecticides from tomato, cucumber, and watermelon samples before their high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectral detection. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the established method gave a low limit of detection ranging from 0.05 to 0.1 ng/g and a good linear response ranging from 0.2 to 40 ng/g with coefficients of determination >0.99. The method recoveries for spiked analytes at the concentrations of 3 and 15 ng/g in real samples were in the range of 87.7-106.7% with the relative standard deviations <6.4%. The results indicated that it had a good adsorption capability toward the target analytes due to the π-stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions. The polymer material showed great potential in the efficient extraction of organic compounds from real samples with complex matrixes.

Abstract:Ce-doped Fe3O4 magnetic particles (Ce-Fe3O4 MPs) were synthesized by co-precipitation method. The coordination and adsorption properties of Ce-Fe3O4 MPs to different natural products were investigated. The results verified that the "catechol-like","maltol-like" and "acetylacetone-like" donor sets of flavonoids were the binding sites with Ce-Fe3O4 MPs. The adsorption was conformed to be pseudo-second-order model and single-layer adsorption after being characterized by adsorption kinetics and adsorption thermodynamics. The adsorption and desorption conditions were optimized. It was found that different components adsorbed on the Ce-Fe3O4 MPs surface can be selective desorbed in different solvents, which was helpful for the selective separation to adsorbed components. The Ce-Fe3O4 MPs were successfully applied to selective adsorption of compounds containing "catechol-like", "maltol-like" and "acetylacetone-like" donor sets in the crude extract of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi and Rheum palmatum L. The results demonstrated that the magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) method based on Ce-Fe3O4 MPs has the advantages of high structural selectivity, high efficiency and low consumption, and can be used for efficient separation of flavonoids with specific structures from natural products.
