Abstract:Cotton fiber functionalized with tetraethylenepentamine and chitosan (CTPC) was prepared and used as absorbents for the removal of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cr(III) ions from aqueous solution. The functionalized materials (CTPC) were characterized by SEM/EDX, FTIR, BET and XRD to confirm the characterization and structural changes of fibers before and after the modifying process. The adsorption performance of CTPC was investigated with different pH, contact time and initial concentration of three kinds of metal ions. Results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity was 81.97 mg g(-1) for Cu(II), 123.46 mg g(-1) for Pb(II) and 72.99 mg g(-1) for Cr (III) based on the Langmuir isotherm model at optimal pH (5.0). Adsorption kinetics of CTPC fibers for Cu(II), Pb (II), and Cr(III) ions followed the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption-desorption experiments demonstrated that CTPC showed better stability, and CTPC would be an effective and practical material for the treatment and recycling of heavy metal ions in the wastewater.

Abstract:The surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was used to successfully prepare the aminated cotton and polyacrylic acid sodium (P(AA-Na))-grafted cotton for the efficient removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous solution in this study. The modified cotton surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The grafted long polymers with high density of amine and carboxyl groups on the cotton surfaces were responsible for the enhanced adsorption of heavy metals. The sorption behaviors including sorption kinetics, isotherms and pH effect were investigated. The sorption equilibrium of Cu(II) and Pb(II) was achieved within 1 h on the P(AA-Na)-grafted cotton, much faster than 8 h on the aminated cotton. According to the Langmuir fitting, the maximum sorption capacities of Cu(II) and Pb(II) on the P(AA-Na)-grafted cotton were 2.45 and 2.44 mmol/g, respectively, higher than many adsorbents reported in the literature. The P(AA-Na)-grafted cotton had better adsorption behaviors for Cu(II) and Pb(II) than the aminated cotton. Keywords Modified cotton Surface-initiated ATRP Sorption Cu(II) Pb(II)

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, amino modified silica fiber cloth (KSF) was prepared by the chemical grafting method. The SEM, FTIR and TGA techniques were employed for the characterization of the silica fiber cloth (SF) and KSF. FTIR analysis suggests that functional amino groups of γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (KH550) were grafted on the surface of KSF. The influence of single factor on adsorption performance was studied. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of KSF can reach 178.46 mg-g 1 , the experimental adsorption data were fitted closely by pseudo-second-order kinetic model, adsorption isotherms were simulated well by Langmuir model. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption process was endothermic, entropy-driven and spontaneous. The adsorption-desorption experiments demonstrated that KSF showed no significant removal efficiency loss even after ten consecutive cycles, indicating the good stability of prepared KSF material. Our findings suggested the KSF can serve as potential candidates for the practical application of wastewater containing heavy metals.
High Efficient Removal of Cu(II) by a Chelating Resin from Strong Acidic Solutions: Complex Formation and DFT Certification

Abstract:The novel chelating resin Dowex M-4195 was selected and applied to investigate the static adsorption properties and interaction nature toward aqueous Cu(II) from acid solutions. The isotherm data could be well described by Langmuir model, and the kinetic curves could be successfully fitted with the pseudo-second-order equation. In strong acid solutions at the pH-value of 2, the obtained adsorption capacity was 1.592mmol/g, about 50% more than that at the higher pH-value of 5. The adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) onto Dowex M-4195, especially at the pH-value of 2, were further explored using the Density-Functional-Theory. The theoretical calculations confirmed the three nitrogen atoms would be all involved in the coordination with tridentate complex and thus the two five-member ring structure could be achieved. Additionally, the XPS spectra testified the involvement of nitrogen atoms, which told the coordination ratio might be 1:1. Whereas, in weak acidic solutions at the pH value of 5, the ion exchange mechanism involving the protonated pyridine of solid matrix and Cu(II) was dominant. Consequently, high efficient removal of Cu(II) especially from strong acidic solutions could be achieved, an indication of a potential and preponderant new method to recover heavy metals from acidic effluents without sufficient neutralization pretreatment.
Use of amino-modified cotton fibers loaded with copper ions for anionic dye removal under batch and fixed-bed systems: A comparative study

Abstract:Amine-functionalized supports were prepared by chemical modification of cotton fibers using amino compounds namely diethylenetriamine (DET) and 1,4-diaminobutane (DB) in order to be loaded with copper ions. Evidence of attaching amine groups onto cellulosic fibers was confirmed through nitrogen and SEM analysis. Adsorption behavior of Acid Blue 25 from aqueous solutions onto [Cu(II)/DET-cotton] and [Cu(II)/DB-cotton] has been evaluated via batch and column mode systems. During the batch experiments, the effects of temperature and type of adsorbent on dye removal were investigated. Results revealed the formation of ternary complexes of the type [AB25/Cu(II)/adsorbent] with a [5/2:3:1] stoichiometry for DET-cotton and a [1:1:1] stoichiometry for DB-cotton at 20 °C. In the isotherm studies, Langmuir, Freundlich, and Jossens equations were applied and it was found that the experimental data conformed to Jossens model. Thermodynamic parameters such as change in free energy (ΔG0), enthalpy (ΔH0), and entropy (ΔS0) have also been calculated in this paper, and it was found that the adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous. The column experiments were conducted to study the effect of bed height on adsorption performance of both adsorbents. Results exhibited that the column capacity of [Cu(II)/DET-cotton] complex was found to be higher than that of [Cu(II)/DB-cotton] as was obtained in batch process. BDST model was applied to experimental data in order to predict the breakthrough curves and determine the characteristics parameters of the column useful for process design. Results revealed that the used model was appropriate to fit the experimental data. Desorption studies to recover the adsorbed dye from both adsorbents were performed with NaOH and NH4Cl solutions.

Abstract:The capacity of untreated cotton stalk to remove and adsorb Cu2+ ions in synthetic and natural aqueous solutions was evaluated. The influence of three sensitive parameters of the adsorption process—solution pH, adsorbent dosage, and contact time—on the percentage of Cu2+ removal in agricultural wastewater, livestock wastewater, and synthetic samples was studied. Physicochemical and morphological properties were studied using thermogravimetry, Fourier infrared spectrophotometry, and scanning electron microscopy. The elemental composition, proximal composition, zero charge point, and acid–base sites were determined. In addition, kinetic studies were performed, and the adsorption equilibrium was analyzed. The optimum conditions for Cu2+ adsorption were the following: solution pH = 5.5, adsorbent dosage of 0.6 g, and contact time of 60 min. Under these conditions, the percentage of Cu2+ removal in synthetic samples was 66.5% when the initial copper concentration was 50 mg/L. The removal percentage in agricultural and livestock wastewater samples was 87.60% and 85.05%, respectively, when the initial copper concentration was 25 mg/L. The adsorption data are consistent with the Freundlich isotherm model, which achieved a quadratic fit of 0.991 compared to 0.5542 for the Langmuir model. The experimental results indicate that the adsorption adequately fits the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results suggest that cotton stalks are a promising adsorbent for the ecological and economical removal of Cu2+ in wastewater. This research, therefore, provides relevant information that contributes to the sustainable management of agricultural waste and instills hope for a reduction in water pollution from heavy metals derived from agricultural activities.

Abstract:An amino functionalized microcrystalline cellulose from corn stalk was prepared and its synthesis and operation conditions were optimized to remove Cu2+ from wastewater. To prepare this adsorbent, cellulose was grafted by glycidyl methacrylate in the presence of OP-10 as emulsifiers and potassium persulfate as initiators, then the grafted cellulose was aminated by diethylenetriamine. Batch experiments were performed to evaluate its adsorption capacity for Cu2+. Its adsorption process for Cu2+ was spontaneous and well fitted with pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of this modified cellulose for Cu2+ was demonstrated to be 343 mg/g at 45 °C and pH 4.5. The adsorbent showed a promising future due to its high performance in the removal of toxic Cu2+ and reusability. From the characterization results of scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the adsorbent structure and adsorption mechanism could be inferred. The adsorption mechanism revealed that the primary and secondary amines were the main functional groups to adsorb Cu2+. The study results could provide a new route for the utilization of waste corn stalk to control water pollution caused by toxic metal ions.Graphical Abstract

Efficient Removal of Copper Ion from Wastewater Using a Stable Chitosan Gel Material

Abstract:: Gel adsorption is an efficient method for the removal of metal ion. In the present study, a functional chitosan gel material (FCG) was synthesized successfully, and its structure was detected by different physicochemical techniques. The as-prepared FCG was stable in acid and alkaline media. The as-prepared material showed excellent adsorption properties for the capture of Cu2+ ion from aqueous solution. The maximum adsorption capacity for the FCG was 76.4 mg/g for Cu2+ ion (293 K). The kinetic adsorption data fits the Langmuir isotherm, and experimental isotherm data follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well, suggesting that it is a monolayer and the rate-limiting step is the physical adsorption. The separation factor (RL) for Langmuir and the 1/n value for Freundlich isotherm show that the Cu2+ ion is favorably adsorbed by FCG. The negative values of enthalpy (ΔH°) and Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) indicate that the adsorption process are exothermic and spontaneous in nature. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of FCG before and after adsorption further reveal that the mechanism of Cu2+ ion adsorption. Further desorption and reuse experiments show that FCG still retains 96% of the original adsorption following the fifth adsorption–desorption cycle. All these results indicate that FCG is a promising recyclable adsorbent for the removal of Cu2+ ion from aqueous solution.

Abstract:Herein, an amidoxime-functionalized chitosan (CTS) AM/AO/AEBI-CTS containing imidazoline groups was facilely prepared through amidoximation of cyano groups in cross-linked CTS obtained by crosslinking of imidazoline-functionalized polyacrylamide and CTS. AM/AO/AEBI-CTS exhibited porous structure, good water wettability, and higher selectivity for Cu2+ than Ni2+. The adsorption process correlated well with Sips isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics models. The adsorption capacities for Cu2+ and Ni2+ onto AM/AO/AEBI-CTS were 190.7 and 128.9 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption thermodynamics demonstrated that the adsorption of Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions onto AM/AO/AEBI-CTS was a spontaneous endothermic process. The FTIR and XPS analyses revealed that nitrogen and oxygen atoms were involved in the chelation with metal ions. The presence of Na+, K+ and Ca2+ had weakly impact on the adsorption efficiency of AM/AO/AEBI-CTS. Furthermore, the adsorption efficiency of AM/AO/AEBI-CTS remained above 90 % after five adsorption-desorption successive cycles. Overall, this CTS material has a good application prospects for wastewater treatment.

Substantial and efficient adsorption of heavy metal ions based on protein and polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers by electrospinning

Abstract:The adverse effects of heavy metal pollutants in wastewater have threatened human health in recent decades. Therefore, the development of absorbents for such pollutants is essential to overcome these problems. Electrospun nanofibers are often used for wastewater treatment owing to their high porosity and high specific surface area. Zein from plants and collagen from animals are vulnerable to moisture, which limits its broad application in practice. However fully biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which is soluble in water, can be mixed with protein individually to overcome the limitation. In this work, the two proteins described above and PVA were combined to prepare protein nanofibers by electrospinning technology, which could achieve adsorption of Cu2+. As the protein content increased, the adsorption properties of the obtained nanofibers for Cu2+ showed a rising and then decreasing trend, with the highest point at 50 % of protein content, especially the collagen nanofibers, which reached 24.62 mg/g. Both protein nanofibers reached adsorption equilibrium after 15 h, but overall, collagen nanofibers showed a superior adsorption performance for Cu2+ than that by zein nanofibers. In the process of Cu2+ adsorption by protein nanofibers, both physical and chemical effect existed, and the physical effect played the leading role.

Abstract:Heavy metal copper ion pollution has enormously threatened ecosystem and public health. So, materials for detecting and adsorbing copper ions (Cu2+) still remains challenging. Electrospinning nanomaterials have good application prospects in the field of water treatment because of its high specific surface area, high porosity and three-dimensional structure. Here, a visualized chitosan/polyacrylonitrile (CS/PAN) nanofiber membrane (NFM) was prepared via the amination modification of the electrospinning membrane and the doping of Cu2+ fluorescent probe to adsorb Cu2+. The effect of membrane absorbs Cu2+ in water was studied from the aspects of initial Cu2+ concentration, PH and adsorption time. It was found that when the pH value of the Cu2+ environment is 5–6, the weight gain rate of aminated nanofiber membrane is 46 %, and the adsorption time is 90 minutes, the adsorption capacity of the NFM can reach 164.3 mg/g. Then, rhodamine hydrazide derivatives were used as fluorescent Cu2+ probes, which were added to the spinning solution to prepare new NFM to achieve selective recognition of Cu2+. The membrane can be used multiple times and can achieve gradient color development of different concentrations of Cu2+, and the detection limit can reach 10−8 M.

Abstract:Ion-exchange fiber has been widely used as a conventional adsorbent for water purification, but its base material, the petroleum, does not comply with the current trend of environmental protection. The synthesis of functional materials from natural resources attracts intensive interest. Cotton lint fiber is a natural cellulose based hollow fiber, which has a unique advantage in ion-exchange process. Herein, for the first time, a cationic design for the cotton lint fiber was carried out in a simple two-step strategy. The cellulose based anion-exchange fiber (CAF) showed well-preserved fibrous macrostructure and cellulose nanofibril structure. And the ideal cationic group content (133.26 mmol·100 g −1 ) of it indicates the successful combination of structural and functional properties, which are the responsible for its excellent adsorption efficiency that includes the high adsorption capacity (above 1300 mg g −1 ), rapid adsorption rate (90% of its equilibrium uptake within 6 min at the initial concentration of 300 mg L −1 ), perfect solid/liquid separation property, and good recyclability (> 95%) for congo red. Additionally, the adsorption mechanism can be attributed to the synergistic effect of electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals force, which was explained by the employment of classical adsorption models and advanced double layer statistical physical model. The results show that this functionalized biomaterial is an ideal candidate to replace the conventional anion-exchange fiber. This work not only revolutionizes the application of natural plant fiber, but also provides a cost-effective and simple strategy for the utilization of cellulose.

Abstract:Environmentally friendly and recycled polydopamine-functionalized electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan nanofibers (PVA/CS/PDA) were prepared through a low-energy-consumption procedure. The PDA coating endows PVA/CS/PDA nanofibers with good water stability. The PVA/CS/PDA nanofibers have a fibrillar and porous structure that is favorable for Cu(II) to access the active sites of the nanofibers. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics data preferably conform to the Liu isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions by PVA/CS/PDA nanofibers from the Liu isotherm model is 326.5 mg g −1 . The PVA/CS/PDA nanofibers exhibit higher adsorption capacity than some other reported adsorbents. The adsorption mechanism study demonstrates that the Cu(II) adsorption is mainly ascribed to the complexation of Cu(II) with the imino, amino, and hydroxy moieties in PVA/CS/PDA nanofibers. The nanofibers can be employed for 5 cycles without significantly deteriorating performance. More interestingly, a fluorometry method based on the oxidation mimic enzyme activity of Cu(II) was developed to detect low concentrations of Cu(II) using the nanofibers as an adsorbent to preconcentrate Cu(II). The limit of detection is 0.42 mg L −1 . The successful removal and detection of Cu(II) in Pearl River and mineral water samples demonstrates the great potential of PVA/CS/PDA nanofibers to remediate Cu(II)-polluted water.

3D Porous Tubular Network-Structured Chitosan-Based Beads with Multifunctional Groups: Highly Efficient and Selective Removal of Cu2+

Abstract:Herein, an effective adsorbent, 3D porous tubular network-structured citric acid-chitosan/Fe/polyethyleneimine beads (CCFPB) with multifunctional active groups and strong selectivity, was prepared for the selective removal of Cu2+ from simulated wastewater. Compared with pure chitosan beads (CB), the adsorption capacity of CCFPB for Cu2+ was increased by 127 mg g(-1) (238%), and the adsorption equilibrium time was shortened by 480 min. The CCFPB showed porous surface and a novel 3D porous tubular network structure in interior, which were benefit to the diffusion of Cu2+ from surface to interior of the CCFPB and the shortening of adsorption equilibrium time. The common coexisting ions in the simulated wastewater had almost no effect on the adsorption of Cu-2 (+) by CCFPB, and the adsorption was fast and reached equilibrium within 10 h. The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model (q(m) = 240.9 mg g(-1) for Cu2+). The adsorption mechanism of CCFPB for Cu2+ was mainly the synergistic interaction with amino, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups. This strategy shows great potential for developing a variety of novel, highly active, and reusable immobilized functional beads materials for effective separation of Cu2+ from multi-ion wastewater. Adsorption of Copper (II) and Lead (II) Ions onto Cottonseed Protein-PAA Hydrogel Composite

Abstract:The adsorption behaviors of copper and lead ions in aqueous solution by cottonseed protein-poly (acrylic acid) copolymer (CP-PAA) hydrogel composite have been studied in single component sorption systems. The influence of cottonseed protein content in the copolymer composition on the adsorption capacity of the hydrogel is studied and the sorption of copper (II) and lead (II) ions is investigated in aqueous solution with different initial metal ion concentration and pH value, respectively. The results indicate that the hydrogel composite is a suitable sorbent for the two metal ions. The experimental data of the adsorption equilibrium from Cu(II) and Pb(II) solution correlated well with the Langmuir isotherm equation. The adsorption kinetics of the two metal ions has been analyzed and the pseudo–second-order equation provides good fits to experimental data of both metals. By treatment with aqueous HCl solution, the hydrogel can be regenerated and reused again to adsorb heavy metal ions. The characterization of the hydrogel after adsorption of metal ions by XRD, SEM and EDS reveals that the accumulation of metal ions occurs on the surface of the hydrogel composite.

Abstract:We report here a simple and effective method applying a combination of chitosan (Cs) and Cu(II) ion to fabricate antibacterial cotton fabric with a remarkable durability against laundering. The antibacterial fabric was prepared by grafting Cs onto cotton fibers through a succinic acid linkage, following with loading Cu(II) ions by the coordination effect. The modified fabric achieved 100% bacterial reduction (BR) rates against both S. aureus and E. coli, and remarkable laundering durability was confirmed even after 100 washing cycles. Moreover, longer Cs chains grafted on fibers shown enhanced chelating capability with Cu(II) ions. When compared to copper nanoparticles, our strategy has advantages in terms of low dosage of Cu(II), reasonable cost, simple process, reduced environmental hazards, and improved antibacterial durability. This work is believed to be a practical strategy for developing environment-friendly and cost-effective long-acting antibacterial cotton textiles.

Understanding competitive Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ adsorption onto functionalized cellulose fiber via experimental and theoretical approach

Abstract:Amidoxime groups were successfully introduced to develop a novel amidoxime-functionalized cellulose fiber (AO-Cell) for absorptive removal of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The chemical structure, and the competitive adsorption of Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ by AO-Cell were investigated by experiments study, Density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation. The results showed the N and O atoms in the amidoxime group can spontaneously interact with Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ through sharing long pair electrons to generate stable coordination structure, which was the dominant adsorption mechanism. Besides, the enlarged surface area, improved hydrophilicity and dispersion offered by AO-Cell facilitate the adsorption process by increasing the accessibility of absorption sites. As results of these synergetic modification, AO-Cell can remain effective in a wide pH range (1–6) and reach adsorption equilibrium within 60 min. At optimal conditions, the achieved theoretical adsorption capacity is as high as 84.81 mg/g for Cu 2+ and 61.46 mg/g for Zn 2+ in the solution with multiple ions. The competition between Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ in occupying the absorption sites arises from the difference in the metallic ion affinity and covalent index with the adsorbent as demonstrated by the MD analysis. Importantly, AO-Cell demonstrated favorable recyclability after up to 10 adsorption-desorption cycles.

Acid-resistant chitosan/graphene oxide adsorbent for Cu2+ removal: The role of mixed cross-linking and amino-functionalized

Abstract:Copper ions in wastewater pose a significant threat to human and ecological safety. Therefore, preparing macroscopic adsorbents with reusable and high adsorption performance is paramount. This paper used graphene oxide as the adsorbent and chitosan as the thickener. Additionally, a silane coupling agent was employed to enhance the acid resistance of chitosan, and amino-modification of graphene oxide was performed. Macroscopic adsorbents with high adsorption capacity were fabricated using 3D printing technology. The results show that all five proportions of inks exhibit good printability. Dissolution experiments revealed that all materials maintained structural integrity after 180 days across pH values. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the successful preparation of the materials. Adsorption experiments showed that the best performing material ratio was 8 wt% graphene oxide and 7 wt% chitosan. Adsorption kinetics and isothermal adsorption experiments demonstrated that the adsorption process occurred via monolayer chemisorption. The adsorption process was attributed to strong electrostatic forces, van der Waals forces, and nitrogen/oxygen-containing functional group coordination. Cycling experiments showed that the material retained good adsorption performance after 6 cycles, suggesting its potential for practical heavy metal treatment applications.
Cu(II) Ion Adsorption by Aniline Grafted Chitosan and Its Responsive Fluorescence Properties

Abstract:The detection and removal of heavy metal species in aquatic environments is of continued interest to address ongoing efforts in water security. This study was focused on the preparation and characterization of aniline grafted chitosan (CS-Ac-An), and evaluation of its adsorption properties with Cu(II) under variable conditions. Materials characterization provides support for the grafting of aniline onto chitosan, where the kinetic and thermodynamic adsorption properties reveal a notably greater uptake (>20-fold) of Cu(II) relative to chitosan, where the adsorption capacity (Qm) of CS-Ac-An was 106.6 mg/g. Adsorbent regeneration was demonstrated over multiple adsorption-desorption cycles with good uptake efficiency. CS-Ac-An has a strong fluorescence emission that undergoes prominent quenching at part per billion levels in aqueous solution. The quenching process displays a linear response over variable Cu(II) concentration (0.05–5 mM) that affords reliable detection of low level Cu(II) levels by an in situ “turn-off” process. The tweezer-like chelation properties of CS-Ac-An with Cu(II) was characterized by complementary spectroscopic methods: IR, NMR, X-ray photoelectron (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The role of synergistic effects are inferred among two types of active adsorption sites: electron rich arene rings and amine groups of chitosan with Cu(II) species to afford a tweezer-like binding modality.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, we used nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs), which were synthesized via the hydrothermal method of corn-stover biomass as raw material and polyethyleneimine as the nitrogen source, introduced them into the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based hydrogel to prepare an environmentally friendly fluorescent cellulose-based hydrogel (NCDs/CMC-PAM). NCDs/CMC-PAM was also used for simultaneous fluorescence monitoring and removal of Cu (II) in aqueous solution. The chemical and physical structures, adsorption behaviors and fluorescent properties of NCDs/CMC-PAM were investigated. The results showed that NCDs/CMC-PAM exhibited a well-linear response range of fluorescence response for Cu (II) (0∼100 μM, detection limit of 3.42 μM). NCDs/CMC-PAM showed maximum adsorption capacities of 237.71 mg/g for Cu (II), the adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which is an exothermic spontaneous reaction with an increase in entropy. It can still maintain 79.03% of the original adsorption capacity after six cycles (pH = 6). The adsorption mechanisms of NCDs/CMC-PAM for Cu (II) are intraparticle diffusion, electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, and ligand interaction. Hence, the present study provides a new green way to synthesize an adsorbent that can be applied for the adsorption and detection of heavy metal ions.
