By establishing rate equations, a theoretical model about the red UC mechanism is presented. It is proposed that the highly efficient red UC emission is mainly due to the UC process from the saturated 4I13/2 (Er3+) state, which is induced by the effective energy-back-transfer process (primary): 4S3/2 (Er3+) + 2F7/2 (Yb3+) → 4I13/2 (Er3+) + 2F5/2 (Yb3+) and the cross-relaxation effect among Er3+ (minor): 4S3/2 + 4I15/2 → 4I9/2 + 4I13/2 at a high pH value of the initial solution. Moreover, the influence of solution pH on the red UC luminescence is systematically studied under different hydrothermal conditions. This paper provides an effective route to obtain nanoparticles with bright red UC luminescence, which may be suitable for biological imaging and display devices.

Abstract:Rare-earth-doped red upconversion nanocrystals (UCNPs) have shown excellent prospects for application in biological imaging, labeling and other fields. In this work, NaErF4@NaYF4 core-shell (CS) UCNPs were successfully constructed to enhance red emission by introducing Yb3+ ions as energy trapping centers under different near-infrared excitation wavelengths. The experimental results showed that the red upconversion emission intensity of NaErF4@ NaYF4 CS UCNPs doped with 15%Yb3+ ions in the core is nearly 202 times higher than that of NaErF4 UCNPs under 980 nm excitation wavelength, with a red/green emission intensity ratio of 18.7. When Yb3+ ions were introduced into the core and shell of NaErF4@NaYF4 CS UCNPs, NaErF4:15%Yb3+@NaYF4:10%Yb3+ CS UCNPs showed the best red emission due to the energy network characteristics of the Yb3+ ions. Furthermore, the enhancement mechanism of red emission in NaErF4@NaYF4 CS UCNPs with different Yb3+ ion doping concentrations were discussed, based on the spectral characteristics and lifetime. It was found that doping of Yb3+ ions in NaErF4@ NaYF4 CS UCNPs can significantly improve the red emission intensity of Er3+ ions through controlling energy migration (EM) and energy back transfer (EBT) processes, which has considerable potential for applications in bioimaging and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:The synthesis and upconversion luminescence properties upon a 980 nm pump of cubic Lu1.88Yb0.1Er0.02O3 nanocrystals with various shapes, e.g., nanorods, nanosheets, and nanoparticles, are studied. It is observed that with decreasing size of the nanocrystals, the relative intensity of the upconverted red emission (Er3+ : F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2)) to the green one (Er3+: (H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2)) -> I-4(15/2)) is increased, and a three-photon process involved in the green upconversion, as described by F-4(9/2) (Er) + F-2(5/2) (Yb) -> H-2(9/2) (Er) + F-2(7/2) (Yb), is synchronously enhanced. An analysis based on steady-state rate equations indicates that the results can be induced by a large I-4(11/2) -> I-4(13/2) nonradiative relaxation rate with a small F-4(9/2) -> I-4(9/2) nonradiative relaxation rate. The large I-4(11/2) -> I-4(13/2) nonradiative relaxation rate is attributed to the occurrence of efficient cross energy transfer to OH- surface group due to the good energy match. As the size of the nanocrystals decreases, the relative surface area is increased, increasing the number of OH- group that can attach to the surface, therefore, enhancing the I-4(11/2) -> I-4(13/2) nonradiative relaxation rate through cross energy transfer to OH- surface group.

Abstract:The tetragonal-phased LiYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles with different core-shell nanostructures have been successfully synthesized by a modified solution-based method. The upconversion emissions of LiYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles were precisely tuned from green to red with the increase in Yb3+ concentrations under 980 nm excitation. The corresponding intensity ratios of the red and green emissions (R/G ratios) were enhanced from 0.06 to 5.33. However, the overall integral upconversion intensity of LiYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles clearly decreased when the Yb3+ doping concentrations were increased. For the enhancement of the red upconversion intensity and expansion of their application, two kinds of core-shell nanostructures, namely, LiYbF4:Er3+ @LiYF4 and LiYbF4:Er3+ @LiYbF4, were constructed through epitaxial growth at similar experimental conditions. The LiYbF4:Er3+ @LiYF4 core-shell nanostructures exhibited stronger upconversion emission and higher R/G ratios than the LiYbF4:Er3+ and LiYbF4:Er3+ @LiYbF4 nanoparticles. The highest R/G ratios increased to 6.27 in LiYbF4:Er3+ @LiYF4 core-shell nanostructures, increasing 104-fold. The upconversion regulation and enhancing mechanism were also discussed according to the emission spectra and fluorescence lifetimes.

Abstract:The red upconversion emission of Ho3+ ions, in the optical window of biological tissue, exhibits excellent prospects in biological applications. This study aims to enhance the red upconversion emission intensity of Ho3+ ions in NaLuF4:20%Yb3+/2%Ho3+/12%Ce3+ nanoparticles through building different core–shell structures with different excitation wavelengths. A significantly enhanced red upconversion emission with a higher red-to-green ratio was successfully obtained in NaLuF4:20%Yb3+/2%Ho3+/12%Ce3+@NaLuF4 core–shell nanoparticles by introducing the Yb3+ and Yb3+/Nd3+ ions into the NaLuF4 shell, with enhancement of the red emission occurring when Yb3+ and Nd3+ ions in the shell transfer more excitation energy to the Ho3+ ions. Investigation of the red emission enhancement mechanism is based on spectral characteristics and lifetimes. We examined the synergistic effect of dual-wavelength co-excitation NaLuF4:20%Yb3+/2%Ho3+/12%Ce3+ @NaLuF4:10%Yb3+/15%Nd3+ core–shell nanoparticles to establish optimal excitation conditions. It is hoped that this method, using red upconversion emission core–shell nanoparticles with multi-mode excitation, can provide new ways to expand the applications of rare-earth luminescent materials in biomedicine and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:Internal OH- defects always cause significant depletion of excitation energy for low upconversion efficiency; however, preventing the incorporation of OH- into the crystal lattice is very difficult during the synthesis of upconversion crystals. In this work, red upconversion emission is dramatically enhanced in Er3+-sensitized hexagonal NaLuF4 (β-NaLuF4) microcrystals through a collaborative effect of ion exchange and Tm3+ doping. The ion exchange can not only maintain the morphology very well but also strongly reduce the internal OH- defects, which can enhance the upconversion luminescence due to improved excitation energy harvesting and red to green (R/G) ratio due to intense cross-relaxation. Doping of Tm3+ as an energy trapping center not only regulates the red emission output but also reduces the excitation energy loss. β-NaLuF4:Er,Tm microcrystals after ion exchange exhibit stronger red upconversion emission compared with β-NaYF4:Er,Tm and β-NaGdF4:Er,Tm counterparts. Moreover, fluorescent labeling of the fingerprint pattern printed from β-NaLuF4:Er,Tm microcrystals with stable and intense red fluorescence has been demonstrated under 980 nm excitation.

Abstract:NaLu(Gd)F-4:Yb,Er nanocrystals (NCs) with different Gd3+ concentrations were synthesized, and the luminescence enhancement mechanism under excitation at 980 nm is discussed. The optimized concentration of Gd3+ ions in NaLuF4:Yb,Er NCs is 20%, of which the upconversion emission is nearly 10 times stronger than that of the Gd3+-free sample. Abstract:This paper presents a study on the enhanced red upconversion (UC) luminescence via efficient energy transfer (ET) between Er3+ and Tm3+ in Er-Tm codoped NaYF4 microtubes. Er doped and Er-Tm codoped NaYF4 UC hollow microtubes have been synthesized using a hydrothermal method. Under 1560 nm excitation from a diode laser, the Er doped NaYF4 microtubes emitted dominant green UC luminescence while the Er-Tm codoped NaYF4 microtubes emitted dominant red UC luminescence, which implies the energy transfer between Er3+ and Tm3+ plays a key role in the enhanced red UC emissions. The red UC luminescence is significantly enhanced compared with the green UC luminescence with the increase of Tm3+ doping concentration. In addition, our experimental results show that the UC luminescence properties under 980 nm excitation are almost identical with that under 1560 nm excitation. Furthermore, the possible ET mechanism was proposed on the basis of our experimental results.

Abstract:Red upconversion luminescence (UCL) is selectively enhanced by about 7 times via Fe(3+) codoping into a NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystalline lattice. The maximum red-to-green ratio (R/G) as well as the overall integrated UCL intensity features at an Fe(3+) content of 20 mol%. The size and phase of nanocrystals are simultaneously manipulated via Fe(3+) doping with various concentrations by a facile hydrothermal method. Contrary to the literature, the pure hexagonal phase appears when Fe(3+) concentrations are from 5 to 20 mol%, meanwhile, the size of NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals reaches its maximum at 10 mol%. The intensified visible UCL especially the dominant red emission is mainly ascribed to the energy transfer (ET) from |(2)F7/2, (4)T1g > (Yb(3+)-Fe(3+) dimer) to (4)F9/2 (Er(3+)) states as well as the distortion of the crystalline field symmetry upon Fe(3+) codoping. Dynamic investigation of (4)S3/2 and (4)F9/2 states under the pulsed laser excitation of 980 nm along with the diffuse reflectance data further supports the proposed mechanism of UC processes. The results show the remarkable promise of Fe(3+)-codoped NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals as upconverting nanoprobes with high sensitivity and penetrability in deeper tissue for multimodal biomedical imaging.

Abstract:The red upconversion emission of lanthanide-doped fluoride nanocrystals have great potential applications in color display and anticounterfeiting applications, especially for biological imaging and biomedical. In this work, a significant enhancement of red upconversion emission of Ho3+ ions was successfully obtained in the cubic phase NaLuF4 nanocrystals through codoping Ce3+ ions under NIR 980 nm excitation. The ratio of red-to-green emission of Ho3+ ions was enhanced about 10-fold, which is due to two efficient cross relaxation processes derived from Ho3+ and Ce3+ ions promoted the red emission and quenched the green emission. The upconversion emission and luminescent colors of NaLuF4: Yb3+/Ho3+ nanocrystals were carefully investigated by a confocal microscopy setup. The possible upconversion emission mechanism and conversion efficiency of cross relaxation between Ho3+ and Ce3+ ions were discussed in detail. The current study suggests that strong red emission of NaLuF4: Yb3+/Ho3+/Ce3+ nanomaterials can be used for color display and anticounterfeiting techniques. (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Luminescence efficiency of trivalent lanthanide-doped upconversion (UC) materials is significantly limited by luminescence concentration quenching. In this work, red UC emission is dramatically enhanced in Er3+-sensitized NaLuF4 UC crystals through energy trapping under multiple excitation wavelengths. Cross-relaxation quenching and the energy migration to internal lattice defects are simultaneously suppressed by confining the excitation energy in the Er3+ activator after introducing the Tm3+ or Ho3+ energy trapping center. The enhanced red UC emission (Er3+: 660 nm) mainly comes from the effective excitation energy confinement by Tm3+ and Ho3+ trapping centers through an easy energy transfer between Er3+ and Tm3+/Ho3+: 4I11/2 (Er3+) → 3H5 (Tm3+) → 4I13/2 (Er3+) and 4I11/2 (Er3+) → 5I6 (Ho3+) → 4I13/2 (Er3+). It is found that the confining efficiency of excitation energy in Er3+-sensitized NaLuF4 crystals is higher than that in Yb3+/Er3+ cosensitized NaLuF4 crystals, and the luminescence efficiency of Er3+-sensitized NaLuF4 crystals is much higher than that of Er3+-based host sensitization UC crystals (NaErF4). Moreover, Er3+-sensitized UC particles can be efficiently excited by three different wavelengths (808, 980, and 1532 nm), indicating huge advantages for applications in bioimaging, anticounterfeiting, and solar cells.

Abstract:The upconversion (UC) luminescence nanocrystals of hexagonal phase NaLuF4:Yb3+/Ho3+ were prepared by a solvothermal process at 300 °C. The visible upconversion emission from green to red in Yb3+ and Ho3+ codoped β-NaLuF4 nanoparticles is successfully achieved by tridoping with Ce3+ ions (0–12 mol%) and the red emission intensity is enhanced gradually with the increasing Ce3+ concentration. In this work, results of XRD, SEM, EDS and TRES upconversion data demonstrate that Ce3+ ions are successfully incorporated into NaLuF4:Yb3+/Ho3+ nanoparticles. UC emissions at 541 nm and 644 nm of all prepared nanoparticles under 980 nm excitation correspond to the transitions of 5S2/5F4 → 5I8 and 5F5 → 5I8 of Ho3+ ions respectively. The decay curves of 541 nm emission under 980 nm pulse excitation are detected. The 541 nm emission decays fast when Ce3+ concentration increases. All results show that tuning from green to red upconversion can be realized in NaLuF4:Yb3+/Ho3+ nanocrystals via tridoping with different concentration of Ce3+ ions.

Abstract:Upconversion, converting two or more photons into a higher energy photon, has attracted tremendous interest for the wide applications ranging from science to engineering, yet always suffered from the shortcoming of low efficiency. We propose and demonstrate an approach to improve the upconversion efficiency by multi-wavelength excitation in Er3+ doped NaYF4 nanoparticles. Compared to the sum of emission intensities excited by two single-wavelength (790nm and 1520nm) separately, the green and red emissions from NaYF4: 1%Er nanoparticles excited by two-wavelength simultaneously are enhanced by a factor of 3.05 and 1.53, respectively. Ground state absorption and excited state absorption are considered to be the microscopic mechanism of the observed phenomenon. Our conception of improving the upconversion luminescence with multi-wavelength excitation might be a potential solution for the efficient ulilization of near infrared light by solar cells.

Abstract:In this paper hexagonal trivalent lanthanide ions (Ln(3+)) doped beta-NaYF4 microparticles were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The structure, morphology and composition of the microparticles were confirmed by XRD, SEM, EDS. Multicolor luminescence was observed. The up-conversion(UC) and down conversion emission intensity of beta-NaYF4:Ln(3+) (Ln(3+)=Er3+, Eu3+) microparticles and the red-emission of beta-NaYF4:Er3+/Eu3+ microparticles were increased. The La3+ ions doped the samples enhancing energy transfer between the Ln(3+) ions by altering the crystal field symmetry around Ln(3+) is described.

Abstract:The Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped Sc2O3 nanoparticles were prepared by co-precipitation method. The phase structure and up-conversion properties were investigated using XRD, FESEM and up-conversion spectra. The nanoparticles with the size of about 40 rim emitted red and green light. Yb3+ ions are crucial to adjust the intensity proportion of red and green emission as a sensitizer. In Er3+, Yb3+ co-doping samples, the red emissions are much higher than green and the intensity ratio is up to 56.43, while the green to red intensity ratio is 11.21 with Era(3+) single doping, which both show excellent mono-chromaticity. Strong red emissions are attributed to the cross-relaxation energy transfer and energy back-transfer processes. High Yb3+ ions concentrations induce the red up-conversion saturation, resulting in a near linear laser power dependence, and it can be illustrated based on steady-state rate equations. Abstract:Yb3+/Ho3+/Li. tridoped Lu6O5F8 as a novel phosphor was prepared by a coprecipitation method. It is found that Li+ doping could enhance the emission intensity of Yb3+/Ho3+ codoped Lu6O5F8 both under the excitation at 980 nm and low-voltage electron beam. Under 980 nm laser excitation, the intensity of red emission is slightly stronger than that of green emission, generating an overall yellow output in Lu6O5F8:20%Yb3+,1%Ho3+,x%Li (0 <= x <= 8) nanoparticles, and the reason for this phenomenon is discussed in detail. Meanwhile, under low-voltage electron beam excitation, spectral results demonstrated that the intensity of red emission is much stronger than that of green emission, yielding a red color output. Therefore, Lu6O5F8:20%Yb3+,1%Ho3+,x%Li+ (0 <= x <= 8) nanoparticles have potential applications in luminescent display panels and field emission displays. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The construction of core-shell structures with multiple heterojunctions facilitates ion energy transfer and minimizes surface quenching effects, which are essential for enhancing and regulating the upconversion emission of materials. In this study, we effectively regulated the spatial distribution of Yb 3+ and Er 3+ ions in multilayered heterogeneous core-shell structures to significantly enhance the red upconversion emission of Er 3+ ions. Specifically, the red emission intensity of the NaErF 4 @NaYbF 4 : 2 %Er 3+ @NaYF 4 core-shell nanoparticles was enhanced nearly 24.4-fold compared to that of NaErF 4 nanoparticles. This enhancement results from a bidirectional energy transfer process. Moreover, when we swapped the positions of the NaErF 4 core and the NaYbF 4 : 2 %Er 3+ shell and introduced NaYF 4 inert isolation layer and Yb 3+ ions, the red emission intensity of the NaYbF 4 :2 %Er 3+ @NaYF 4 :20 %Yb 3+ @NaErF 4 @ NaYF 4 multilayer core-shell structure increased significantly by nearly 254.3-fold compared to NaErF 4 nanoparticles. The remarkable enhancement of the red emission of Er 3+ ions is primarily attributed to a well-organized bidirectional energy transfer process between the heavily doped core and shell Er 3+ -Yb 3+ ion pairs. The energy transfer behavior of these multi-heterojunction core-shell nanoparticles was studied based on their spectral characteristics. The multilayer heterogeneous core-shell nanoparticles exhibited colorful emissions under different excitation conditions, highlighting their potential for biomedical applications and colorful anti-counterfeiting.
