Abstract:The detailed mechanisms of the dehydrogenation of benzyl alcohol with N2O as the hydrogen acceptor catalyzed by the rhodium(i) carbene complex for the formation of the corresponding carboxylic acid or ester have been investigated via density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the M06 level of theory. Three cycles were considered for the formation of benzaldehyde, benzyl benzoate and benzoic acid. On the basis of the calculations, the rate-determining step for these three cycles is involved in N2O activation by the rhodium ammine hydride complex with an activation barrier of only 22.6 kcal mol-1, which is different from the previous mechanism proposed by Gianetti and co-workers, where the hydride is transferred from the Rh atom to the oxygen atom of N2O with a barrier of 30.5 kcal mol-1. In addition, the calculations also demonstrated that one more N2O is necessary to give benzoic acid, and the reaction can only take place under anhydrous conditions. Present calculations are in good agreement with the experimental observations and provide new insights into the dehydrogenation of benzyl alcohol with N2O as the hydrogen acceptor.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Various functional groups are tolerated in the reaction system. Abstract:Rhodium nanoparticles or rhodium organometallic complexes are mainly used in catalysis for reduction or hydroformylation reactions. In this work instead, we explored the capabilities of Rh nanoparticles as an oxidation catalyst, applied to the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde under very mild conditions (100 °C, and atmospheric pressure) as a model reaction. Here we report the preparation of novel Rh/C catalysts by using an impregnation protocol, with particular emphasis on the pre-treatment of the carbon supports by using HNO3 and HCl, as well as the characterization of these materials by using an array of methods involving TEM, XPS and XRPD. Our preparation method led to a wide Rh particle size distribution ranging from 20 to 100 nm, and we estimate an upper limit diameter of Rh nanoparticles for their activity towards benzyl alcohol oxidation to be ca. 30 nm. Furthermore, a HNO3 pre-treatment of the activated carbon support was able to induce a smaller and narrower particle size distribution of Rh nanoparticles, whereas a HCl pre-treatment had no effect or sintered the Rh nanoparticles. We rationalise these results by HNO3 as an acid able to create new nucleation sites for Rh on the carbon surface, with the final effect of smaller nanoparticles, whereas for HCl the effect of sintering was most likely due to site blocking of the nucleation sites over the carbon surface. The roles of acid centres on the carbon surfaces for the oxidation reaction was also investigated, and the larger their amounts the larger the amounts of by-products. However, by treatment with HNO3 we were able to convert neutral or basic carbons into supports capable to enhance the catalytic activity of Rh, and yet minimised detrimental effects on the selectivity of the oxidation to benzaldehyde.

Abstract:An environmentally benign oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and metal dodecanesulfonate salts as catalysts was conducted under solvent-free condition by biphasic catalysis. Ferric tridodecanesulfonate showed excellent catalytic activity exhibiting complete conversion of benzyl alcohol with 194.4mol/molcat turnover number (TON) and nearly 100% selectivity to benzaldehyde at ambient pressure and 90°C. This catalyst can be recovered and reused for three times without a significant loss in its activity and selectivity.

Abstract:Nano alpha-Fe2O3 was prepared using PEG-400 as dispersant by a simple sol-gel method, as proved by XRD, SEM, TEM and ICP-MS. The alpha-Fe2O3 was demonstrated to be an efficient catalyst for N-benzylation of aliphatic and aromatic amines with benzyl chloride and benzyl bromide in 8% Na2CO3 aqueous solution, achieving ca. 100% conversions and > 82% selectivity to monosubstituted products for aromatic amines and higher selectivity to disubstituted products for aliphatic amines at 50-80 degrees C and reaction time 1-3 h. The catalyst was easily recovered and reused effectively three runs without a significant loss of catalytic activity. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A systematic theoretical study of rhodium-catalyzed allylic alkylation reactions using hard benzylzinc nucleophiles was performed. The mechanisms were investigated in detail together with the regioselectivity associated with the branched and linear pathways and the intriguing anti - (as opposed to syn -) diastereoselectivity of this process. The preferred mechanism was found to be initiated by the oxidative addition of the rhodium(I) complex followed by migration of the benzyl nucleophile to the Rh center. The subsequent nucleophilic addition of a benzyl group to the η 3 -allyl moiety takes place via the formation of a new C–C bond to afford the final allylic benzylation product. This proposed mechanism readily explains the experimental observation that the products obtained from such reactions are branched (as opposed to linear) with an anti -configuration (as opposed to a syn -configuration). This work also provides reasons for the lower regioselectivity observed for a OCO 2 t Bu leaving group or cyanophenyl/secondary amide substituents at the 4-position of the substrate. The present study is expected to assist in the rational design of potential substrates for analogous reactions.

Abstract:The first computational study on the mechanisms and stereoselectivities of the reaction between benzaldehyde and butadienoate generating E-4-oxo-2-butenoate catalyzed by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) has been carried out using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We have located and compared several possible pathways, which allows us to determine the most preferred mechanism. We found that the most preferred mechanism consists six key steps, i.e. the addition of catalyst to the benzaldehyde (Step I), intramolecular 1,2- proton transfer affording the Breslow intermediate (Step II), carbon−carbon bond formation in which the Breslow intermediate adds to the butadienoate (Step III), the protonation of the γ-carbon (Step IV), the deprotonation of the hydroxyl group (Step V) and elimination of the catalyst (Step VI). The solvent chloroform (CHCl3) plays a vital role in the 1,2-proton transfer, protonation and deprotonation. The carbon−carbon bond formation step determines the stereoselectivity of the reaction, and the E-isomer is the predominant product, which agrees well with the experimental results. In addition, we performed non-covalent interaction analysis, and found that the transition state that responsible for generating the major product E-4-oxo-2-butenoate was stabilized by a number of weak interactions such as CH···π, OH···π and π···π interactions. The mechanistic picture presented here would be useful in designing new NHC-catalyzed reactions in the future.

Abstract:A novel rhodium-catalyzed highly selective N-2-alkylation of benzotriazoles with diazo compounds/enynones is achieved, providing N-2-alkylated benzotriazoles in good to excellent yields and with excellent N-2 selectivities. Importantly, different to traditional carbene insertion into X - H (X = N, O etc) bonds, DFT calculations disclose that this selective N-2-alkylation probably proceeds through a formal 1,3- rather than 1,2-H shift to give the final products.

Abstract:An enantioselective deoxygenative cyanation of benzyl alcohols was accomplished for the first time through the synergistic photoredox and copper catalysis. This reaction features the use of organic photosensitizer and low‐cost 3d metal catalyst, simple and safe operations, and extremely mild conditions. Abstract:The mechanisms of hydrogenation and hydrosilylation of nitrous oxide catalyzed by a ruthenium PNP pincer complex I have been studied through quantum chemistry calculations at the M06 level of theory. It was found that the catalytic cycle of hydrogenation of nitrous oxide contains three steps, hydrogenation of the dearomatized PNP pincer complex 1, mono oxygen transfer and water release. In addition, the catalytic cycle of hydrosilylation of nitrous oxide also includes three steps, hydrosilylation of the dearomatized PNP pincer complex 1, mono oxygen transfer, dehydrogenative coupling of silanol and silane/direct Si-O bond coupling. The calculations suggested that the water molecule play an important role to lower the barrier for N-2 liberation. Frontier molecular orbital theory and NBO analysis indicated that nitrous oxide is activated by hydrido ligand via nucleophilical attacking. Present calculations are in good agreement with the experimental observations and can help to understand the activation of N2O. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Ruthenium-catalyzed oxidation of multisubstituted allyl alcohols in the presence of benzaldehyde gives enals or enones in good yields. Unlike the commonly reported ruthenium-catalyzed isomerization reaction of allyl alcohols to give saturated ketones, an intermolecular rather than intramolecular hydrogen transfer is involved in this transformation. This reaction offers an efficient, mild, and high-yielding method for the preparation of substituted α,β-unsaturated compounds.
