Abstract:The complex generated in situ between CuI and TPA(tris(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amine)combined with TEMPO can be successfully applied to the aerobic oxidation of benzyl and allyl alcohols in acetonitrile,with more than 90%conversion and yield.Furthermore,the oxidation can be performed at room temperature and any base as additive is needless.

Abstract:Abstract The current study focuses on the photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol in acetonitrile under air bubbling conditions comparing titania-based materials, Cu-MOF, and Cu-MOF-NH 2 as semiconductor photocatalysts. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, N 2 adsorption-desorption, FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy, and TEM. The photocatalytic benzyl alcohol conversion reached ~ 100% after exposing the four prepared catalysts to a 125W mercury lamp for up to 240 min. Benzaldehyde is formed with a moderate selectivity (after a reaction time of 60 min. ca. 30% over the titania-based catalysts 37%, 45% over Cu-MOF, and Cu-MOF-NH 2 , respectively). The formation of electron-hole pairs at the surface of the semiconductor nanoparticles followed by oxidation reaction was the suggested mechanism. A first-order kinetic model was observed for the photocatalytic oxidation of the investigated alcohols, and the rate constants were calculated. According to preliminary research, decorating MOF linker by amine (MOF-NH 2 ) could improve visible-light harvesting, charge separation, and electron transport of the resulting catalyst, resulting in increased photocatalytic activity. The current work offers some direction for the development of MOF-based photocatalysts for organic synthesis.

Abstract:A method for the α-oxidation and sulfonation of benzyl secondary amines was developed utilizing Ir( III ) or Eosin Y as the photocatalyst in the presence of O 2 as a green oxidant. Using commercial substrates, 37 products from cyclic and acyclic benzylamines were achieved with good functional group compatibility in 48–87% yields. Furthermore, tetrahydroisoquinoline protected by an Ac or a Boc group was oxidized under standard conditions.

Abstract:Selective photocatalysis offers an alternative green and economically competitive approach for valuable fine chemical synthesis. In this research, the Ni@C/TiO2-Z catalyst was prepared for the efficient photocatalytic oxidation of various aromatic alcohols. Interestingly, the selectivity of the reaction products is affected by the absorbance of the solvents used in the reaction. The oxidation ability of the reaction system is stronger when the absorption peaks of the solvents are closer to light source wavelengths. Therefore, the reaction tends to generate aldehyde in acetonitrile and acid in ethyl acetate, which allows for the manipulation of product selectivity by choosing the solvent.

Abstract:An environmentally benign oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and metal dodecanesulfonate salts as catalysts was conducted under solvent-free condition by biphasic catalysis. Ferric tridodecanesulfonate showed excellent catalytic activity exhibiting complete conversion of benzyl alcohol with 194.4mol/molcat turnover number (TON) and nearly 100% selectivity to benzaldehyde at ambient pressure and 90°C. This catalyst can be recovered and reused for three times without a significant loss in its activity and selectivity.

Abstract:By combination of photocatalysis and organocatalysis, a metal-free system composed of mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4) and N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) offers an efficient and environmentally friendly method for the oxidation of alcohols at room temperature. As a wide-band gap semiconductor, mpg-C3N4 absorbs visible light and uses the energy to activate NHPI, resulting in high catalytic activity in the subsequent oxidation of alcohols. Interestingly, the main oxidation product of benzyl alcohol can be tuned from benzoic acid to benzaldehyde by increasing the ratio of mpg-C3N4 in the catalyst system. To further understand the reaction route, electron spin resonance and Fourier transform infrared measurements were carried out, confirming that active oxygen and phthalimide N-oxyl radicals formed in the mpg-C3N4/NHPI system. Based on these results, a catalytic mechanism for the mpg-C3N4/NHPI system was proposed. Moreover, this metal-free system also works well for the oxidation of various aromatic alcohols with good selectivity for aldehydes or ketones.

Abstract:Carboxylic acids, as a fundamental raw material, are widely used in the production of fine chemicals. Herein, we developed the oxidation of alcohols to carboxylic acids under visible light irradiation at room temperature by devising a duplex NH2-MIL-125(Ti)/NaBr catalyst system comprising a photocatalyst and a redox-active cocatalyst. Using the optimization of reaction conditions, the reaction proceeded in high yield under mild conditions with producing barely side products from various alcohols, including sterically hindered aromatic alcohols, aliphatic primary alcohols, and electron-withdrawing/ electron-donating groups substituted benzyl alcohols.
Selective Aerobic Oxidation of Aromatic Alcohols Catalyzed by Tio(2): an Insight on the Effect of Surface Fluorination

Abstract:To achieve better activity, TiO(2) was modified through surface fluorination using hydrofluoric acid (denoted as HF-TiO(2)). The photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared HF-TiO(2) and pure TiO(2) photocatalysts were evaluated for selective aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Experimental results indicated that without any loss of selectivity (>98%), distinct rate enhancement can be observed on HF-TiO(2) comparing to pure TiO(2). To optimize the condition of pretreatment, different concentrations of hydrofluoric acid were also used and the optimal concentration was determined to be 2%. Moreover, the dynamics of benzyl alcohol oxidation followed pseudo-first-order kinetic. By ESR technique and experiments adding different captures, the active specie is determined to be O(2) while O(2).- and H(2)O(2) were byproducts of the reaction. In a word, this study opens a new path to obtain both high selectivity and conversion yield by TiO(2) photocatalysis.

Abstract:A Fe(III)-promoted highly selective photo-oxidation of benzylic C–H bond delivering relative carbonyl products is reported. By altering the concentration of ferric salt, methylarenes can be selectively oxidized under UV irradiation to furnish aromatic aldehydes or acids, respectively. By this protocol, the oxidation of ethylarenes provides the corresponding acetophenones. The reaction is inferred to involve divergent pathways in different concentrations of catalyst for the alternative selectivity between aldehydes and aicds. The reusable catalyst, high conversion and selectivity make this oxidation a green and economic protocol for the synthesis of aromatic carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:The photocatalytic oxidation of biomass‐derived benzyl alcohol provides a promising way for the synthesis of benzoic acid, which is an important intermediate with wide applications. To improve the efficiency of photocatalytic benzyl alcohol oxidation to benzoic acid is of great interest. In this work, we propose the utilization of NH2‐UiO‐66‐ID‐Fe catalyst for photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzoic acid, where NH2‐UiO‐66 is a typically used metal‐organic framework, ID is indole‐2,3‐dione (ID) that has biocompatibility, light absorption property and can be covalently combined with amino‐functionalized substances. The NH2‐UiO‐66‐ID‐Fe catalyst exhibits improved light absorption and photo‐generated electron‐hole separation ability compared with NH2‐UiO‐66. The photocatalytic performance of NH2‐UiO‐66‐ID‐Fe was examined for the oxidation of bio‐based benzyl alcohol under mild conditions of air atmosphere, room temperature and no additive or additional oxidant involved. The results show that the conversion of benzyl alcohol and the selectivity to benzoic acid could both reach over 99% in 6 h, and the generation rate of benzoic acid per gram of catalyst is 3.36 mmol g‐1 h‐1. The reaction mechanism was detected by radical trapping method and in situ electron paramagnetic resonance. This study presents an efficient and environmentally benign avenue for the synthesis of carboxylic acid compounds.

Abstract:TiO2 nanotube arrays grown by anodization were coated with thin layers of polydopamine as visible light sensitizer. The PDA-coated TiO2 scaffolds were used as photocatalyst for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol under monochromatic irradiation at 473 nm. Benzaldehyde was selectively formed and no by-products could be detected. A maximized reaction yield was obtained in O2-saturated acetonitrile. A mechanism is proposed that implies firstly the charge carrier generation in polydopamine as a consequence of visible light absorption. Secondly, photo-promoted electrons are injected in TiO2 conduction band, and subsequently transferred to dissolved O2 to form oxygen radical anions. These radicals react with benzyl alcohol and lead to its selective dehydrogenation oxidation towards benzaldehyde.

The Preparation of Ag/Pd/m-BiVO4 Microsphere Photocatalysts with Different Loading Modes and Their Catalytic Activity for Selective Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:A series of Ag/Pd/m-BiVO4 (monoclinic) bimetallic photocatalytic materials with different loading amounts and different mass ratios of Ag and Pd were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and an NaBH4 reduction method. The Ag/Pd/m-BiVO4 photocatalyst with a total Ag and Pd loading of 2 wt% and an Ag-to-Pd mass ratio of 2:1 can selectively oxidize benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde under visible light irradiation, the conversion rate was up to 89.9%, and the selectivity was greater than 99%. The conversion rate on Ag/Pd/m-BiVO4 was higher than those on Ag/m-BiVO4 and Pd/m-BiVO4. The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption isothermal curves (BET) and other means. The effects of different light wavelengths and light intensities were compared. Then, the effects of different alcohol derivatives on the reactions were explored. The cycle experiments proved that the Ag/Pd/m-BiVO4 photocatalyst had good light stability and thermal stability. In addition, the capturing experiment of active species shows that the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol is mainly accomplished through the synergistic action of h+, e−, •OH and •O2−.

Abstract:At present, the photocatalytic selective oxidation of alcohols to corresponding aldehydes is still widely concerned. Therefore, it is a great challenge to explore photocatalysts with a high conversion rate and selectivity. Here, the composite photocatalyst CdS QDs/TiO2–x /Ti3C2 QDs was constructed by an electrostatic self-assembly method. TiO2–x nanotubes (T x ) with oxygen vacancies were modified with CdS quantum dots (CS QDs) and Ti3C2 quantum dots (TC QDs). The introduction of CS QDs can expand the range of light reception of the composite catalyst. TC QDs are a cheap material, and their existence can replace the cocatalytic effect of precious metal materials, as an electron collector can effectively transfer electrons to the surface of the composite catalyst and then accelerate the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA). As a result, the composite catalyst 7.5% CS QDs/T x /TC QDs can promote the conversion of BA to 98% and the formation selectivity of benzaldehyde (BAD) to 99% in the photocatalytic selective oxygen reaction of BA. Moreover, the composite catalyst has good cycle stability. Our work provides an idea for the further industrialization of BA oxidation.

Synthesis of Sandwich-Structured AgBr@Ag@TiO 2 Composite Photocatalyst and Study of Its Photocatalytic Performance for the Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohols to Benzaldehydes

Abstract:Silver halide-based photocatalytic materials have been successfully used in organic contaminant degradation and disinfection, but their application in the oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes has never been reported. Herein, we fabricated sandwich-structured AgBr@Ag@TiO2 composite photocatalyst by a facile multistep route and for the first time studied its photocatalytic performance for the oxidation of benzyl alcohols to benzaldehydes. It was found that the porous TiO2 shell layer can be successfully anchored on the surface of AgBr core by a kinetics-controlled hydrolysis process and the thickness of TiO2 shell layer can be conveniently tuned by adjusting the addition amount of ammonia water during titanium source hydrolysis. The control experiments indicated that the O-2 plays a vital role in promoting the oxidation of benzyl alcohols while non-aqueous solvents are favorable to improving the reaction selectivity from alcohol to aldehyde. Compared to blank TiO2 and AgBr@Ag, sandwich-structured AgBr@Ag@TiO2 exhibited a drastically enhanced photocatalytic activity in terms of benzyl alcohol oxidation under visible light irradiation. The transient photocurrent and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum analyses confirmed that the core-shell structure can effectively promote the separation of photo-generated electrons and holes. The radical scavenging experiments revealed that superoxide radical (.O-2(-)) and hole (h(+)) are the main reactive species responsible for the transformation from benzyl alcohols to benzaldehydes. Abstract:Benefiting from the regulation of ROS species through a simple and feasible strategy, an efficient and switchable photocatalytic protocol for the chemoselective synthesis of aldehydes and carboxylic acids via oxidation of primary alcohols under mild conditions has been developed. Using the pyridinium derivative as a metal-free organic photocatalyst, a variety of benzyl alcohols can be converted into aldehydes or carboxylic acids under an air atmosphere at room temperature with high selectivity and yield via simple solvent regulation. A feasible tandem reaction combining the pyridinium-catalyzed alcohol-to-aldehyde conversion and catalyst-free photoinduced oxidation of aromatic aldehydes provides a powerful and efficient approach for the one-pot oxidation of benzyl alcohols to carboxylic acids, while a small amount of water can effectively regulate the competition of electron transfer and energy transfer and inhibit the generation of carboxylic acids, facilitating highly efficient and selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes.

Abstract:We have developed a metal-free photocatalytic selective hydroxylation of benzylic methylenes to secondary alcohols. This approach utilizes low-cost eosin Y as photocatalyst, O(2) as green oxidant, and inexpensive triethylamine as inhibitor for overoxidation. The mild reaction conditions enable the production of secondary alcohols with 56-95% yields, making it a promising and environmental-friendly method for the synthesis of secondary alcohols from benzylic methylenes.
