Abstract:Tsuzuki has conjectured that for crystals with Frobenius and connection over a local field k((t)), the embedding of the category of overconvergent crystals into the category of convergent crystals is fully faithful. We prove Tsuzuki's conjecture restricted to the subcategory of potentially semistable (or quasi-unipotent) crystals, following de Jong's proof of a slightly weaker result. We also prove Tsuzuki's conjecture restricted to crystals with at most two distinct slopes.

Hydrogen Storage in Carbon Nanotubes Through the Formation of Stable C-H Bonds.

Abstract:To determine if carbon-based materials can be used for hydrogen storage, we have studied hydrogen chemisorption in single-walled carbon nanotubes. Using atomic hydrogen as the hydrogenation agent, we demonstrated that maximal degree of nanotube hydrogenation depends on the nanotube diameter, and for the diameter values around 2.0 nm nanotube-hydrogen complexes with close to 100% hydrogenation exist and are stable at room temperature. This means that specific carbon nanotubes can have a hydrogen storage capacity of more than 7 wt % through the formation of reversible C-H bonds.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube is excellent material for hydrogen storage and molecular sensory applications thanks to its quasi-one dimensional geometry and unique structure-property relationship. In this paper, hydrogenation of carbon nanotubes is discussed in the extent of binding geometry and mechanochemical coupling under structural deformation. Our first-principles calculations show that the atomic structures, mechanical and electronic properties of carbon nanotubes can be significantly modified by hydrogenation. Moreover, the hydrogenation process is controlled by strain loading. Under an axial compressive or tensile strain of 10%, the binding energies of hydrogen on carbon nanotubes can be changed up to -0.24 and 0.74 eV respectively. Analysis on electronic structure, mechanical properties and charge density reveals the underline mechanisms. The results reported here offer a way not only to tune the binding strength of hydrogen on carbon nanotubes in a controllable and reversible manner, but also to engineer the properties of carbon nanotubes through a synergistic control on hydrogen binding and mechanical loading.

Abstract:Hydrogen bond is a typical noncovalent bond with its strength only one-tenth of a general covalent bond. Because of its easiness to fracture and re-formation, materials based on hydrogen bonds can enable a reversible behavior in their assembly and other properties, which supplies advantages in fabrication and recyclability. In this paper, hydrogen bond nanoscale networks have been utilized to separate water and oil in macroscale. This is realized upon using nanowire macro-membranes with pore sizes similar to tens of nanometers, which can form hydrogen bonds with the water molecules on the surfaces. It is also found that the gradual replacement of the water by ethanol molecules can endow this film tunable transport properties. It is proposed that a hydrogen bond network in the membrane is responsible for this switching effect. Significant application potential is demonstrated by the successful separation of oil and water, especially in the emulsion forms.

Abstract:The construction of hydrogen-bonded organic framework materials by intermolecular hydrogen bonding forces has been rapidly developed in the last decade, among which, the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding and functional binding sites exhibited by nitrogen-containing functional groups have made them favorites for designing organic components to customize functionalized porous materials. This review systematically introduces the types of nitrogen-containing monomers used to prepare porous hydrogen-bonded organic backbones and the principles of their construction, summarizes the design advantages of crystalline materials from an elemental perspective, and presents the applications of such HOFs in the fields of gas adsorption/separation, molecular recognition, plasmonic conductivity, biomedical, and luminescent materials, etc. Finally, the prospects for the development of such materials are discussed and potential directions for future work are analyzed.

Abstract:Towards the development of a useful mechanism for hydrogen storage, we have studied the hydrogenation of single-walled carbon nanotubes with atomic hydrogen using core-level photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We find that atomic hydrogen creates C-H bonds with the carbon atoms in the nanotube walls and such C-H bonds can be com-pletely broken by heating to 600 oC. We demonstrate approximately 65+/-15 at % hydrogenation of carbon atoms in the single-walled carbon nanotubes which is equivalent to 5.1+/-1.2 weight % hydrogen capacity. We also show that the hydrogenation is a reversible process.

Abstract:In reticular chemistry, molecular building blocks are designed to create crystalline open frameworks. A key principle of reticular chemistry is that the most symmetrical networks are the likely outcomes of reactions, particularly when highly symmetrical building blocks are involved. The strategy of synthesizing low-dimensional networks aims to reduce explicitly the symmetry of the molecular building blocks. Here we report the spontaneous formation of hydrogen-bonded fibrous structures from trigonal prismatic building blocks, which were designed to form three-dimensional crystalline networks on account of their highly symmetrical structures. Utilizing different microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, we identify the structures at the early stages of the assembly process in order to and understand the growth mechanism. The symmetrical molecular building blocks are incorporated preferentially in the longitudinal direction, giving rise to anisotropic hydrogen-bonded porous organic nanotubes. Entropy-driven anisotropic growth provides micrometer-scale unidirectional nanotubes with high porosity. By combining experimental evidence and theoretical modeling, we have obtained a deep understanding of the nucleation and growth processes. Our findings offer fundamental insight into the molecular design of tubular structures. The nanotubes evolve further in the transverse directions to provide extended higher-order fibrous structures [nano- and microfibers], ultimately leading to large-scale interconnected hydrogen-bonded fiber-like structures with twists and turns. Our work provides fundamental understanding and paves the way for innovative molecular designs in low-dimensional networks.

Abstract:Chemisorptions of hydrogen on 4 h carbon nanotubes are studied by first-principles pseudopotential method. The calculated hydrogen binding energies show robust chirality and diameter dependence for the interior and exterior adsorptions, respectively. The band structures of these ultrasmall diameter nanotubes are very sensitive to the hydrogen concentration and can undergo transitions between metal, semiconductor, and insulator. Our calculations also indicate that the hydrogen storage capacity can be as high as 9.8 wt% for the (5,0) tube.

Abstract:Nanowire arrays can be conveniently fabricated by electrodeposition methods using porous anodized alumina oxide templates. They have found applications in numerous fields. Nanotube arrays, with their hollow structure and much enhanced surface-to-volume ratio, as well as an additional tuning parameter in tube wall thickness, promise additional functions compared with nanowire arrays. Using a similar fabrication method, we have developed a facile and general method to fabricate metallic nanotubes (NTs). Using Ni NTs as a model system, the mechanism of the hydrogen-assisted NT growth was postulated and confirmed by controlling the hydrogen formation with conductive salts in an electrodeposition solution, which improves the H<sub>2</sub> concentration but prevents the large H<sub>2</sub> bubbles from blocking the nanochannel of a template. The controlled hydrogen generation forces the growth along the wall of nanochannels in the templates, leading to the NT formation. Abstract:Based on first principles calculations, we propose a mechanism for the dissociative chemisorption of H2 on carbon nanotubes. The breaking of the H--H bond is concerted with the formation of two C--H bonds on two adjacent carbon nanotubes in solid phase, facilitated by the application of high pressure which shortens the interstitial distance between nanotubes. The process is reversible upon the release of external pressure and could make an important contribution to the observed hydrogen storage capacity of carbon nanotubes. The previously unexplained experimental observations of the direct hydrogenation of fullerenes under high pressure lend further support for such a mechanism.

Abstract:The unique electronic properties of boron nano tubes (BNTs) and hydrogenated BNTs (H-BNTs) lead to its potential applications in electrochemical and hydrogen storage. In the present work, the stability and electronic properties of single wall BNTs and, particularly, the effects of hydrogenation on the structural and electronic features are investigated on the basis of the first-principles electronic calculations. It is interesting to find that hydrogenation can stabilize (m,0) BNTs with m being 7-13. In addition, H-BNTs can be either metallic or semiconducting depending on the diameter. In particular, electronic properties of (m,0) H-BNTs can also be engineered by exerting strain along the axial direction, as verified in the case of strained H-BNTs where a semiconductor metal crossover was predicted at 3% tensile strain. Our results would drive more interesting studies on BNTs with different chiralities and chemical functionalizations.

Abstract:We show that the electronic and atomic structure of carbon nanotubes undergo dramatic changes with hydrogen chemisorption from first principle calculations. Upon uniform exohydrogenation at half coverage, the cross sections of zigzag nanotubes become literally square or rectangular, and they are metallic with very high density of states at the Fermi level, while other isomers can be insulating. For both zigzag and armchair nanotubes, hydrogenation of each carbon atom from inside and outside alternatively yield the most stable isomer with a very weak curvature dependence and a large band gap.

Pore Structure And Hydrogen Storage Of Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes with various structures are synthesized by the floating catalyst method. After purified in some ways, they are subjected to adsorb hydrogen under moderate pressure (about 10 megapascal)at room temperature. It was found that the graphitized carbon nanotubes and bundles of well-aligned carbon nanotubes synthesized by the floating catalyst method have a hydrogen storage capacity of over 3 wt.%, which suggested that the multi-walled carbon nanotubes could be used as a promising material for hydrogen storage. The morphology and pore strucutre were analyzed by N-2 adsorption at 77K and HRTEM. According to N-2 adsorption, the bundles of aligned carbon nanotubes have a narrow pore distribution concentrated in the range of micro- and meso-pores, which is favorable for hydrogen uptake.

Abstract:It has been considered so far that the inner cavities of carbon nanotubes are the desired place for the storage of hydrogen molecules. Here we show that the inter-nanotube space between densely aligned carbon nanotubes, produced by catalytic pyrolysis of ferrocene, could also contribute to the effective uptake of molecular hydrogen. This provides a new way to improve the properties of carbon nanotubes in storing hydrogen or other elemental molecules.

Abstract:Detailed studies of mechanisms for hydrogen dissociative adsorption and diffusion on pure and nitrogen-doped (8, 0) carbon nanotubes are carried out using the first-principles density functional theory method. (1) For pure carbon nanotubes, we have identified the energetically most favorable dissociative pathway for hydrogen adsorption, with a barrier height of $1.3\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$. We also found that the adsorbed hydrogen atoms can act as an autocatalyst for further dissociative adsorption of hydrogen molecules. (2) It is found that on pure carbon nanotubes the diffusion of hydrogen atoms is constrained by interaction with neighboring adsorbed hydrogen atoms. The diffusion barrier is around $0.7\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ for an isolated hydrogen atom, but becomes substantially higher at around $1.4\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ in the presence of adsorbed hydrogen in neighboring positions. (3) Doping the nanotube with nitrogen considerably alters the catalytic effects of the carbon nanotube for hydrogen dissociative adsorption. The dissociative adsorption of hydrogen on the carbon nanotube is greatly enhanced, with the barrier substantially reduced to ca. $0.9\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$. The differences in the barrier heights are explained through analysis of the electronic structure changes of the nanotube.
Adsorption and dissociation of hydrogen molecules on bare and functionalized carbon nanotubes

Abstract:We investigated interaction between hydrogen molecules and bare as well as functionalized single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) using first-principles plane wave method. We found that the binding energy of the H$_{2}$ physisorbed on the bare SWNT is very weak, and can be enhanced neither by increasing the curvature of the surface through radial deformation, nor by the coadsorption of Li atom that makes the semiconducting tube metallic. Though the bonding is strengthened upon adsorption directly to Li atom, yet its nature continues to be physisorption. However, the character of the bonding changes dramatically when SWNT is functionalized by the adsorption of Pt atom. Single H$_{2}$ is chemisorbed to Pt atom on the SWNT either dissociatively or molecularly. If Pt-SWNT bond is weakened either by displacing Pt from bridge site to a specific position or by increasing number of the adsorbed H$_{2}$, the dissociative adsorption of H$_{2}$ is favored. For example, out of two adsorbed H$_{2}$, first one can be adsorbed dissociatively, second one is chemisorbed molecularly. The nature of bonding is weak physisorption for the third adsorbed H$_{2}$. Palladium also promotes the chemisorption of H$_{2}$ with relatively smaller binding energy. Present results reveal the important effect of transition metal atom adsorbed on SWNT and advance our understanding of the molecular and dissociative adsorption of hydrogen for efficient hydrogen storage.

Abstract:Nanopores can serve as a molecule channel for transport of fluid, where water diffusion differs remarkably from that of simple particles. Hydrogen bonds play an essential role in the diffusion anomaly. Detailed investigations are carried out on the systems of rigid (6, 6), (7, 7), (8, 8), (9, 9), and (10, 10) armchair carbon nanotubes, solvated with Lennard-Jones water fluids. The role of hydrogen bonds is examined by diffusivity statistics and animation snapshots. It is found that in small (6,6) CNT, hydrogen bonds tend to aggregate water into a wire and lead to rapid collective drift. Confinement can stabilize the hydrogen bond of water molecules and enhance its lifetime. In relatively smaller CNTs, the diffusion mechanism could be altered by the temperature. Moreover, in larger nanotubes hydrogen bonding network allows the water to form regional concentrated clusters. This allows water fluid in extremely low density exhibit rather slow self-diffusion motion. This fundamental study attempts to provide insights in understanding nanoscale delivery system in aqueous solution. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:Molecular and atomic adsorption of hydrogen on anatase TiO2 nanotubes is investigated using density functional theory. Hydrogen molecules are found to physisorb nondissociatively on the Ti atoms, with little effect on the electronic property of the nanotubes. Differently, a semiconductor-to-metal transition occurs when the hydrogen atoms chemisorb only on the twofold-coordinated O atoms. Further increasing hydrogen concentration will first lead to a 'heterolytic adsorption mode' where the adjacent Ti atoms can also adsorb the hydrogen atoms, and finally the full adsorption in both molecular and atomic forms. The observed adsorption-dependent electronic properties of TiO2 nanotubes is useful for their applications in hydrogen sensors. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We present a systematic experimental investigation of the reactions between hydrogen plasma and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) at various temperatures. Microscopy, infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy, and electrical transport measurements are carried out to investigate the properties of SWNTs after hydrogenation. Structural deformations, drastically reduced electrical conductance, and an increased semiconducting nature of SWNTs upon sidewall hydrogenation are observed. These changes are reversible upon thermal annealing at 500 degrees C via dehydrogenation. Harsh plasma or high temperature reactions lead to etching of nanotubes likely via hydrocarbonation. Smaller SWNTs are markedly less stable against hydrocarbonation than larger tubes. The results are fundamental and may have implications to basic and practical applications including hydrogen storage, sensing, band gap engineering for novel electronics, and new methods of manipulation, functionalization, and etching of nanotubes.
