Abstract:Hydrogen bonding principles are at the core of supramolecular design. This overview features a discussion relating molecular structure to hydrogen bond strengths, highlighting the following electronic effects on hydrogen bonding: electronegativity, steric effects, electrostatic effects, π‐conjugation, and network cooperativity. Historical developments, along with experimental and computational efforts, leading up to the birth of the hydrogen bond concept, the discovery of nonclassical hydrogen bonds (CH…O, OH…π, dihydrogen bonding), and the proposal of hydrogen bond design principles (e.g., secondary electrostatic interactions, resonance‐assisted hydrogen bonding, and aromaticity effects) are outlined. Quantum Chemical Modeling of Hydrogen Binding in Metal--Organic Frameworks: Validation, Insight, Predictions and Challenges.

Abstract:A detailed chemical understanding of \ce{H2} interactions with binding sites in the nanoporous crystalline structure of metal--organic frameworks (MOFs) can lay a sound basis for the design of new sorbent materials. Computational quantum chemical calculations can aid in this quest. To set the stage, we review general thermodynamic considerations that control the usable storage capacity of a sorbent. We then discuss cluster modeling of \ce{H2} ligation at MOF binding sites using state-of-the-art density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and how the binding can be understood using energy decomposition analysis (EDA). Employing these tools, we illustrate the connections between the character of the MOF binding site and the associated adsorption thermodynamics using four experimentally characterized MOFs, highlighting the role of open metal sites (OMSs) in accessing binding strengths relevant to room temperature storage. The sorbents are MOF-5, with no open metal sites, \ce{Ni2}(\textit{m}-dobdc), containing Lewis acidic Ni(II) sites, Cu(I)-MFU-4\textit{l}, containing $\pi$ basic Cu(I) sites and V\textsubscript{2}Cl\textsubscript{2.8}(btdd), also containing $\pi$-basic V(II) sites. We next explore the potential for binding multiple \ce{H2} molecules at a single metal site, with thermodynamics useful for storage at ambient temperature; a materials design goal which has not yet been experimentally demonstrated. Computations on Ca$^{2+}$ or Mg$^{2+}$ bound to catecholate or Ca$^{2+}$ bound to porphyrin show the potential for binding up to 4 \ce{H2}; there is precedent for the inclusion of both catecholate and porphyrin motifs in MOFs. Turning to transition metals, we discuss the prediction that two \ce{H2} molecules can bind at V(II)-MFU-4\textit{l}, a material that has been synthesized with solvent coordinated to the V(II) site. Additional calculations demonstrate binding three equivalents of hydrogen per OMS in Sc(I) or Ti(I)-exchanged MFU-4\textit{l}. Overall, the results suggest promising prospects for experimentally realizing higher capacity hydrogen storage MOFs, if nontrivial synthetic and desolvation challenges can be overcome. Coupled with the unbounded chemical diversity of MOFs, there is ample scope for additional exploration and discovery.

Abstract:As a novel class of porous crystalline materials, hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), self-assembled from organic or metal–organic building blocks through intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions, have attracted more and more attention. Over the past decade, a number of porous HOFs have been constructed through judicious selection of H-bonding motifs, which are further enforced by other weak intermolecular interactions such as π–π stacking and van der Waals forces and framework interpenetration. Since the H-bonds are weaker than coordinate and covalent bonds used for the construction of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), HOFs have some unique features such as mild synthesis condition, solution processability, easy healing, and regeneration. These features enable HOFs to be a tunable platform for the construction of functional materials. Here, we review the H-bonding motifs used for constructing porous HOFs and highlight some of their applications, including gas separation and storage, chiral separation and structure determination, fluorescent sensing, heterogeneous catalysis, biological applications, proton conduction, photoluminescent materials, and membrane-based applications.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Constructing well-organized organic frameworks with tailor-made functionalities potentially boost multi-domain applications. Hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) is a category of general and weak intermolecular interactions when compared with covalent bonding or metal-ligand coordination. Porous frameworks mainly assembled by H-bonding (named hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks, HOFs) are intrinsically capable of decomposing and regenerating, a distinctive advantage to improve their processability while expanding the applicability. This paper summarizes the basic building concepts of HOFs, including feasible hydrogen bonded motifs, effective molecular structures, and their emerging applications.

Abstract:Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), self-assembled from strategically pre-designed molecular tectons with complementary hydrogen-bonding patterns, are rapidly evolving into a novel and important class of porous materials. In addition to their common features shared with other functionalized porous materials constructed from modular building blocks, the intrinsically flexible and reversible H-bonding connections endow HOFs with straightforward purification procedures, high crystallinity, solution processability, and recyclability. These unique advantages of HOFs have attracted considerable attention across a broad range of fields, including gas adsorption and separation, catalysis, chemical sensing, and electrical and optical materials. However, the relatively weak H-bonding interactions within HOFs can potentially limit their stability and potential use in further applications. To that end, this Perspective highlights recent advances in the development of chemically and thermally robust HOF materials and systematically discusses relevant design rules and synthesis strategies to access highly stable HOFs.

Abstract:As a new class of porous crystalline materials, hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) assembled from building blocks by hydrogen bonds have gained increasing attention. HOFs benefit from advantages including mild synthesis, easy purification, and good recyclability. However, some HOFs transform into unstable frameworks after desolvation, which hinders their further applications. Nowadays, the main challenges of developing HOFs lie in stability improvement, porosity establishment, and functionalization. Recently, more and more stable and permanently porous HOFs have been reported. Of all these design strategies, stronger charge-assisted hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds have been proven to be effective for developing stable, porous, and functional solids called hybrid HOFs, including ionic and metallized HOFs. This Review discusses the rational design synthesis principles of hybrid HOFs and their cutting-edge applications in selective inclusion, proton conduction, gas separation, catalysis and so forth.

Abstract:Recent decades have witnessed the explosive emergence of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as functional ultrahigh surface area materials. Categorized as an intriguing class of hybrid materials, MOFs exhibit infinite crystalline lattices with inorganic vertices and molecular-scale organic linkers. Fortunately, the large internal surface areas and overall pore volumes, adjustable pore sizes, ultralow densities, and tunable framework–adsorbate interaction by ligand functionalization and metal choice, enable MOFs to be promising materials for wide applications. In particular, these remarkable properties render MOFs potential hydrogen storage materials. By virtue of their exceptionally high surface areas, unparalleled tenability and structural diversity, MOFs have become a hotspot of research within the scientific community. This paper reviews the different methods used for the synthesis of MOFs, the relationship between structural features and hydrogen adsorption, the strategies for hydrogen uptake improvement as well as the molecular simulation.

Abstract:The construction of hydrogen-bonded organic framework materials by intermolecular hydrogen bonding forces has been rapidly developed in the last decade, among which, the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding and functional binding sites exhibited by nitrogen-containing functional groups have made them favorites for designing organic components to customize functionalized porous materials. This review systematically introduces the types of nitrogen-containing monomers used to prepare porous hydrogen-bonded organic backbones and the principles of their construction, summarizes the design advantages of crystalline materials from an elemental perspective, and presents the applications of such HOFs in the fields of gas adsorption/separation, molecular recognition, plasmonic conductivity, biomedical, and luminescent materials, etc. Finally, the prospects for the development of such materials are discussed and potential directions for future work are analyzed.

Abstract:Carbon can exist in various structural forms (graphite, graphene, graphene-nanoribbon and flake) and these are technologically very important materials. On the other hand, hydrogen incorporation in these materials can significantly affect their structural and electronic properties. As it is difficult to observe hydrogenation processes directly in experiment and to measure the electronic states at atomic scale, first-principle calculations are widely used to investigate the interaction between hydrogen and various carbon-based structures in past years. In this article, we briefly review work done in recent years, theoretical understanding on the interaction between hydrogen and different forms of carbon materials and present a number of strategies to modify the properties of carbon-based systems.

Abstract:Porous materials have garnered significant attention in various scientific disciplines, including clinical, medical, and environmental sciences, due to their versatile applications. Recently, a new class of porous materials known as hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) has emerged. HOFs are formed through extended frameworks connected via hydrogen bonding and offer distinct advantages, including a well-defined crystalline structure, facile solution processing, and straightforward regeneration processes. These exceptional properties have driven research interest in HOFs, leading to the development of innovative platforms for a wide range of multifunctional applications. HOFs can be tailored to specific porosity and structural requirements by rationalizing the selection of organic building blocks. In this article, we provide a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles underlying HOFs, synthesis methods, and various hydrogen bonding motifs, such as diaminotriazine (DAT), carboxylic acid (–COOH), and sulfonic acid (–SO3H), used in constructing stable HOFs. We discuss recent advancements in HOF research, addressing critical concerns related to stability, reusability, and conductivity, with a focus on electrostatic binding strengths. Additionally, we explore potential applications of HOFs, including proton conduction, catalysis, sensing, luminescent materials, and biotechnology. Finally, we provide insights into the future prospects and challenges associated with HOFs, offering valuable guidance for further exploration and advancement in the dynamic field of porous materials.

Abstract:Hydrogen‐bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a class of crystalline framework materials assembled by hydrogen bonds. HOFs have the advantages of high crystallinity, mild reaction conditions, good solution processability, and reproducibility. Coupled with the reversibility and flexibility of hydrogen bonds, HOFs can be assembled into a wide diversity of crystalline structures. Since the bonding energy of hydrogen bonds is lower than that of ligand and covalent bonds, the framework of HOFs is prone to collapse after desolventisation and the stability is not high, which limits the development and application of HOFs. In recent years, numerous stable and functional HOFs have been developed by π‐π stacking, highly interpenetrated networks, charge‐assisted, ligand‐bond‐assisted, molecular weaving, and covalent cross‐linking. Charge‐assisted ionic HOFs introduce electrostatic attraction into HOFs to improve stability while enriching structural diversity and functionality. In this paper, we review the development, the principles of rational design and assembly of charge‐assisted ionic HOFs, introduces the different building block construction modes of charge‐assisted ionic HOFs. Highlight the applications of charge‐assisted ionic HOFs in gas adsorption and separation, proton conduction, biological applications, etc., and prospects for the diverse design of charge‐assisted ionic HOFs structures and multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Molecules bearing carboxylic acid, amide, and hydroxyl groups are ubiquitous in crystal engineering, where robust hydrogen-bonded synthons centred on these functionalities enable reliable crystal structure design. We now show that halogen bonding to the carbon π-system of such molecules, traditionally ignored in crystal engineering, permits the recognition and directional assembly of the resulting hydrogen-bonded structural subunits, leaving the archetypal hydrogen-bonded ring, ladder, and chain homosynthons intact, but repositioned in space. When applied to heteromolecular synthons, this enables rearranging more complex hydrogen-bonded motifs and the evolution of binary cocrystals into ternary ones through "latent" carbon-based recognition sites, demonstrating a rational approach to build higher-order solid-state supramolecular assemblies.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)—microporous materials constructed by bridging metal centres with organic ligands—show promise for applications in hydrogen storage, which is a key challenge in the development of the ‘hydrogen economy’. Their adsorption capacities, however, have remained insufficient for practical applications, and thus strategies to enhance hydrogen–MOF interactions are required. Here we describe an anionic MOF material built from In(iii) centres and tetracarboxylic acid ligands (H4L) in which kinetic trapping behaviour—where hydrogen is adsorbed at high pressures but not released immediately on lowering the pressure—is modulated by guest cations. With piperazinium dications in its pores, the framework exhibits hysteretic hydrogen adsorption. On exchange of these dications with lithium cations, no hysteresis is seen, but instead there is an enhanced adsorption capacity coupled to an increase in the isosteric heat of adsorption. This is rationalized by the different locations of the cations within the pores, determined with precision by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:To solve the problems of directional design and rational construction of new metal–organic framework materials (MOFs), this work uses the principles and methods of coordination chemistry and crystal engineering to carry out the theoretical design and mechanism research of new MOFs for high‐efficiency hydrogen storage application scenarios. The effective storage and utilization of hydrogen energy is expected to solve the problems of energy shortage and environmental pollution currently faced by human society. Metal–organic framework materials (MOFs) have been shown by scientists to be very potential hydrogen storage materials. However, the current design methods and strategies for MOFs are still generally in the trial‐and‐error stage, and the research works are at the overall level. To solve the problems of directional design and rational construction of new MOFs, this work uses the principles and methods of coordination chemistry and crystal engineering to carry out the theoretical design and mechanism research of new MOFs for high‐efficiency hydrogen storage application scenarios. In this study, the structures selected for theoretical calculation were divided into two types: different ligands for the same metal (IRMOFs, MOF‐205, and DUT‐23‐Zn) and different metals for the same ligand (DUT‐23‐M [(M = Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn]). The model construction process, hydrogen loading with temperature, specific surface area, hydrogen adsorption energy, charge density and hydrogen storage mechanism of the above structures were analyzed, and the key indicators that may affect the hydrogen storage performance of MOFs were summarized: type and quantity of coordination metals, temperature, pressure, adsorption site and specific surface area.

Abstract:Hydrogen‐bonded frameworks have garnered significant attention due to their flexible structures with tailored porosity, making them a promising class of porous framework materials. However, the direct synthesis of hydrogen‐bonded frameworks with specific functions is highly challenging due to the unpredictable formation of hydrogen‐bonded frameworks. In response, postsynthetic modification has emerged as a potent strategy to imbue desired functions into hydrogen‐bonded frameworks. Recent advances have demonstrated the effectiveness of postsynthetic modification in hydrogen‐bonded frameworks for studying their mechanical, luminescent, electrochemical, and chiral properties. In this concept, we comprehensively summarize the methodologies and outcomes of postsynthetic modification to hydrogen‐bonded frameworks, providing a highlight of this exciting research area.

Explicit treatment of hydrogen bonds in the Universal Force Field: validation and application for Metal-Organic Frameworks, hydrates and host-guest complexes

Abstract:A straightforward means to include explicit hydrogen bonds within the Universal Force Field is presented. Instead of treating hydrogen bonds as non-bonded interaction subjected to electrostatic and Lennard-Jones potentials, we introduce an explicit bond with negligible bond order, thus maintaining the structural integrity of the H-bonded complexes and avoiding the necessity to assign arbitrary charges to the system. The explicit hydrogen bond changes the coordination number of the acceptor site and the approach is thus most suitable for systems with under-coordinated atoms, such as many metal-organic frameworks, however, it also shows excellent performance for other systems involving a hydrogen-bonded framework. In particular, it is an excellent means for creating starting structures for molecular dynamics and for investigations employing more sophisticated methods. The approach is validated for the hydrogen bonded complexes in the S22 dataset and then employed for a set of metal-organic frameworks from the Computation-Ready Experimental (CoRE) database and several hydrogen bonded crystals including water ice and clathrates. We show that direct inclusion of hydrogen bonds reduces the maximum error in predicted cell parameters from 66% to only 14% and the mean unsigned error is similarly reduced from 14% to only 4%. We posit that with the inclusion of hydrogen bonding, the solvent-mediated breathing of frameworks such as MIL-53 is now accessible to rapid UFF calculations, which will further the aim of rapid computational scanning of metal-organic frameworks while providing better starting points for electronic structure calculations.

Abstract:The storage of hydrogen is key to its applications. Developing adsorbent materials with high volumetric and gravimetric storage capacities, both of which are essential for the efficient use of hydrogen as a fuel, is challenging. Here we report a controlled catenation strategy in hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (RP-H100 and RP-H101) that depends on multiple hydrogen bonds to guide catenation in a point-contact manner, resulting in high volumetric and gravimetric surface areas, robustness and ideal pore diameters (~1.2-1.9 nm) for hydrogen storage. This approach involves assembling nine imidazole-annulated triptycene hexaacids into a secondary hexagonal superstructure containing three open channels through which seven of the hexagons interpenetrate to form a seven-fold catenated superstructure. RP-H101 exhibits high deliverable volumetric (53.7 g l-1) and gravimetric (9.3 wt%) capacities for hydrogen under a combined temperature and pressure swing (77 K/100 bar → 160 K/5 bar). This work illustrates the virtues of supramolecular crystals as promising candidates for hydrogen storage.
