Abstract:An issue associated with the use of Sm0.5Sr0.5Co3-delta (SSC) as the cathode in SOFCs is the unexpected reactions between Sm or/and Sr and SO2 from ambient air, forming a passivated layer on the surface of the SSC cathode and thus lowering the durability of the SSC cathode. Here, we develop four types of SSC cathode (SSC-particles, SSC-particles with Mg/Fe layer, SSC-nanofibers and SSC-nanofibers with Mg/Fe layer) and carry out four different cell tests with the four kinds of cathode to examine the durability of Sm0.5Sr0.5Co3-delta (SSC) cathode when exposed to ambient air containing SO2. SSC-particles and SSC-nanofibers are prepared by sol-gel method and electrospinning method, and Mg/Fe protective layer is infiltrated into SSC-particles and SSC-nanofibers to form the cathode with Mg/Fe layer, respectively. It is shown that after discharging with the ambient air containing SO2, the microstructure and cathodic polarization resistances of all the four cathode are changed. More impressively, compared with the SSC-particles cathode, the use of the SSC-nanofibers cathode with Mg/Fe layer decreases the decline rate of current up to 50%. The significant improvement in the durability is mainly attributed to the fact that a specific network space of the nanofibers can make the Mg/Fe layer surround and run through the entire cathode, and the Mg/Fe layer will react with SO2 first to protect the cathode. It is suggested that the combination of the nanofiber structure and the Mg/Fe protective layer is an effective approach to protect the SSC cathode from SO2.

Abstract:A nano-structured Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (- delta) (SSC) cathode is fabricated by an ion-impregnation method for intermediate-temperature SOFCs based on zirconia electrolytes. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that perovskite SSC is formed when the impregnated nitrates are fired at 800 degrees C for 1 h. Scanning electron microscopy reveals that the SSC particles are nano-structured. The effect of the electrode thickness, the amount of SSC loading, and the firing process on the interfacial polarization resistance are investigated using symmetrical cells. Anode-supported cells with the nano-structured cathode show an interfacial polarization resistance of only 029 Omega cm(2) at 600 degrees C and produce a peak power density of 437 mW/cm(2) at 600 degrees C with humidified hydrogen as the fuel. The high cell performance indicates that SSC nanoparticle impregnated samaria-doped ceria electrodes are promising for intermediate-temperature SOFCs. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A 70wt.% Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3 - 30 wt.% Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (SSC-SDC73) composite cathode was co-synthesized by a facile one-step sol-gel method, which showed lower polarization resistance and overpotential than those of physically mixed SSC-SDC73 cathode. The polarization resistance of co-synthesized SSC-SDC73 cathode at 800 degrees C was as low as 0.03 Omega cm(2) in air. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the enhanced electrochemical property was mainly attributed to the smaller grains and good dispersion of SSC and SDC phases within the composite cathode, leading to an increase in three-phase boundary length. The dependence of polarization resistance with oxygen partial pressure indicated that the rate-limiting step for oxygen reduction reaction was the dissociation of molecular oxygen to atomic oxygen process. An anode supported fuel cell with a co-synthesized SSC-SDC73 cathode exhibited a peak power density of 924 mW cm(-2) at 800 degrees C. Our results suggested that co-synthesized composite was a promising cathode for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs).
La0.7Sr0.3FeO3−δ Composite Cathode Enhanced by Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3−δ Impregnation for Proton Conducting SOFCs

Abstract:Proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (H-SOFCs) with BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ (BZCY) electrolyte were fabricated by impregnating Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3−δ (SSC) into La0.7Sr0.3FeO3−δ-BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ (LSF-BZCY) composite cathode. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that SSC and LSF were chemically compatible, which verified the feasibility of SSC impregnation on the composite cathode. The SEM results exhibited that evenly distributed SSC nano-particles formed on the cathode surface and the amount of nano-particles increased with elevated SSC loading value. The electrochemical performances of the symmetrical and single cells were substantially improved by virtue of SSC impregnation. The long-term stability of impregnated single cell was also tested. The loading amount of 15wt.% SSC after impregnation was proved to be the optimal value in improving the overall performance of BZCY electrolyte H-SOFCs with LSF-BZCY composite cathode.
Sulfur Poisoning of SOFC Cathodes

Abstract:In order to examine degradation of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes due to a trace of SOx in air, sulfur poisoning of SOFC cathodes was investigated in an accelerated mode using SO2-concentrated air at T = 1073 K. Two different cathode materials, Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (SSC) and (La0.85Sr0.15)(0.95)MnO3 (LSM), were fired on button-type La(0.8)Sr(0.2)Ga(0.8)Mg(0.15)Co(0.0)5O(3-delta) electrolytes. SO2-concentrated air (98 ppm SO2-air mixture) was selected as the source of sulfur in order to accelerate degradations due to sulfur poisoning. By exposure to SO2, the performance of SSC cathode rapidly declined, because both ohmic and polarization resistances increased. The performance of the LSM cathode slightly decreased after exposure to SO2, and the performance recovered by interrupting the feed of SO2. Secondary phases such as strontium sulfate were formed on SSC cathode after exposing SO2 and were not clearly detected on LSM cathode. The LSM cathode was more stable in SO2 concentrated air than the SSC cathode. This can be explained by the difference in the activity of strontium oxide in LSM and SSC. Abstract:Electrospinning is employed to fabricate Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3-delta (SSC) nanofibers. One-dimensional nanofiber-based Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3-delta-Gd0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (SSC-GDC) composite cathodes for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) are fabricated by infiltrating the GDC precursor solution into the SSC nanofibers scaffolds. Optimal polarization resistance of 0.038 Omega cm(2) at 650 degrees C is achieved when SSC: GDC mass ratio of 1:0.869 for infiltration is used. This value is 2.6 times smaller than the polarization resistance of nanoparticle-based SSC-GDC composite under identical testing conditions. Microstructural features of the SSC-GDC interface further support the cell performance results. The nanofiber-based SSC-GDC composite is proved to be an excellent candidate as cathode material for intermediate temperature SOFCs.

X-ray diffraction patterns showed obvious solid-state reactions between BSCF and SSC. However, the composite materials exhibited higher conductivity than that of pure BSCF, e.g., around 176 S cm(-1) at 500 degrees C for the x= 30 wt% composite, which was nearly seven times higher than that of BSCF. The thermal expansion coefficients of the BSCF-SSC were between (18.0 and 21.9) x 10(-6) K-1 from 30 to 800 degrees C, which was slightly higher than that of BSCF. In addition, electrochemical impedance spectra exhibited the better performance of BSCF-SSC composite cathodes than pure BSCF. The results of the polarization resistance indicated that the optimum content of SSC in the composite cathodes was about 30 wt%, e.g., the polarization resistance value of BSCF-30 wt%SSC was only 0.71 Omega cm(2) at 550 degrees C, about one seventh of that BSCF at 550 degrees C. Supersonic spray derived Cu–Co oxide coating on SUS441 to protect the metallic interconnect and to increase stability of SOFC cathode

Abstract:The interconnects for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are usually ferritic stainless steels such as SUS441. These steels have issues of oxidation and Cr diffusion under the operational high temperatures, which can cause serious deterioration of the cathode performance. In order to improve the electrode stability and the oxidation resistivity, this work deposits Cu–Co oxide coating on SUS441 interconnects via room-temperature supersonic spray using fine CuCo 2 O 4 spinel-based oxide powders synthesized via a combustion process. The coating can significantly inhibit the growth of chromium oxide scale on the steel surface and increase the interconnect conductivity by a factor of 4.4 in 200-hr oxidation test in air. The coating effectively prevents Cr diffusion to the cell composed of La 0·6 Sr 0·4 FeO 3-δ electrode and La 0·8 Sr 0.2 Ga 0.8 Mg 0·2 O 3-δ electrolyte. As a result, the coating substantially increases the cathode performance by reducing the interfacial polarization resistance and improving the stability in 100-hr test at 800 °C. This study demonstrates that this high-performance protective Cu–Co oxide coating has a promising application prospect for SOFC interconnects.

Abstract:Crystal structure, thermal expansion coefficient; electrical conductivity and cathodic polarization of compositions in the system Sm0.5Sr0.5Co1-xFexO3-delta with 0 <= x <= 0.9 were studied as a function of Co/Fe ratio and temperature in air. Two phases, an orthorhombic symmetry for 0 <= x <= 0.4 and a cubic symmetry for 0.5 <= x <= 0.9, were observed in samples Of Sm0.5Sr0.5Co1-xFe3-delta at room temperature. The adjustment of thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) to electrolyte, which is one of the main problems of SSC, could be achieved to lower TEC values with more Fe substitution. High electrical conductivity above 100 S center dot cm(-1) at 800 degrees C was obtained for all specimens, so they could be good conductors as cathodes of IT-SOFC. The polarization behavior of SSCF as a function of Fe content was evaluated by means of AC impedance using LSGM electrolyte. It is found that the Area Specific Resistance (ASR) of SSCF increases as the amount of substitution of Fe for Co increases. When the amount of Fe reaches to 0.4, the highest ASR is obtained and then the resistance starts decreasing. The electrode with a composition of Su(0.5)Sr(0.5)Co(0.2)Fe(0.8)O(3-delta) shows high catalytic activity for oxygen reduction operating at temperature ranging from 700 to 800 degrees C.

A Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (SDC) Interlayer Method to Prevent the Elemental Interdiffusion Between Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3-δ (SSC) Cathode and La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-δ (LSGM) Electrolyte

Abstract:The durability of the La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-delta (LSGM) electrolyte decreases when the Sm0.5Sr0.5Co3-delta(SSC) is used as the cathode. In this study, we developed five types of cathode [Pt, Au, SSC (annealed at 800 and 1200 degrees C, denoted SSC-800, SSC-1200, respectively), pelleted SSC, and SSC with a Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (SDC). interlayer] to understand why the durability of LSGM in the presence of an SSC cathode declines. We found that, after constant polarization tests, the microstructure and cathodic polarization resistances of the Pt, SSC-800, SSC-1200 and SSC-pellet cathodes had changed, and the similar substances had separated from the crystalline grains at the grain boundaries, because of elemental interdiffusion at the interface. Hence, an SDC interlayer method was used to prevent the interdiffusion between the SSC cathode and the LSGM electrolyte. Improving the Stability of La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ Electrode for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells by Introducing Sintering Inhibitors

Abstract:In this study, nano-sized Al2O3 and Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95 (GDC) particles are added to La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (LSCF) cathode material as sintering inhibitors for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) to improve the stability of the cell performance. Studies reveal that as the amount of the inhibitors increases, the sintering activation energy of the composite LSCF sample increases, resulting in retarded sintering kinetics indicated by the suppressed grain size of the sintered composite LSCF cathode. Long-term durability tests show that due to the enhanced stability of the microstructure of the composite LSCF cathode, the composite cathode exhibits improved performance stability. Furthermore, both the Al2O3 and GDC additions can improve the hardness and elastic modulus of the cathode, while the electrical conductivity of both cathodes exceed 100 S/cm and can still meet the requirements for the SOFC in the operation temperature range of 600–800 °C. In light of the boosted electrochemical durability of the Al2O3-added LSCF cathode and much lower cost of Al2O3 compared to the rare-earth element based GDC materials, LSCF cathode with a proper amount of the nano-sized Al2O3 inhibitors is a good solution to enhance the mechanical property, electrochemical durability of LSCF cathode for the SOFCs at low cost.

Abstract:The commercialization of proton solid oxide fuel cells (H-SOFCs) is hindered by the lack of high active and durable cathode materials exposed to evil operation conditions. Here, this groundbreaking study addresses two critical challenges impeding the practicality of La0.6Sr0 & sdot;4Co0 & sdot;2Fe0 & sdot;8O3-delta (LSCF), one of the most popular protonconducting cathode materials contemporarily: inadequate temperature activity and durability issues stemming from surface Sr segregation. The research introduces a transformative solution through the creation of a novel nanofiber cathode, denoted as PrBaCo1.4Fe0 & sdot;6O6-delta@LSCF, comprising a nanoscale LSCF FP host and PBCF NP guest. Advanced electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques confirm the seamless integration of the two phases, highlighting a distinctive fiber structure adorned with impregnated nanoparticles. Meanwhile, efficiently reducing oxygen vacancies within the LSCF bulk phase significantly suppresses Sr segregation. Systematic simulations based on density functional theory reveal that the incorporation of PSCF reduces the polarization energy barrier. In practical terms, electrochemical testing of a single cell supported by PBCF@LSCF shows a polarization resistance of only 0.053 Omega cm2 at 700 degrees C, translating to a remarkable fifty percent reduction. Furthermore, a sustained 100-h test reveals no notable decline in performance. Consequently, a novel dual modification approach is proposed for crafting cathodes tailored for SOFCs.

Abstract:Abstract Solution precursor plasma spraying (SPPS) was employed to prepare porous Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (SSC) cathode for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The surface and cross-sectional morphology of the SSC deposit were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The effect of annealing on SSPS SSC microstructure was examined. The electrochemical behavior was investigated through the impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the SPPS SSC cathode deposited at a spray distance of 80 mm exhibits multidimensional porous microstructure. The porous film of the partially crystalline perovskite phase with a fine microstructure was obtained after annealing at 900 °C for 2 hours in air. The electrochemical measurement showed that the specific surface resistance of SSC decreased significantly with the increase of test temperature and yielded a specific surface resistance of 2.6 Ω·cm2 at 800°C.

Abstract:Core-shell-structured La0.8Sr0.2Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ@Gd0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (LSCF@GDC) composite materials are synthesized and sintered as the SOFC cathodes by screen-printing method. The durability of core-shell-structured LSCF@GDC composite cathodes are evaluated through constant current polarizations (CCP) process at 750 °C and the results indicate that the core-shell-structured LSCF@GDC composite cathode (nanorod, 0.6) possesses an excellent long-term stability. In addition, molecular dynamics (MD) model is developed and applied to simulate the interaction between LSCF and GDC particles. According to the simulation results, compressive stress is generated at the cathode-electrolyte interface by the coated GDC layer. Combining with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) refinement results, it's revealed that the lattice strains are introduced in LSCF lattices because of the compressive stress. Furthermore, XPS results show that the core-shell-structured LSCF@GDC composite cathode (nanorod, 0.6) possess a better inhibition ability for Sr surface segregation. This study provides a possible way to suppress Sr surface segregation.

Abstract:In this paper, we present results of synchrotron studies of the impact of carbon dioxide exposure on Sr surface segregation phenomenon in La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (LSCF-6428), a promising cathode material for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The morphological changes at the surface were examined by AFM studies. These are combined with computational studies of the stability of the LSCF cathode to carbon dioxide exposure. The kinetics and thermodynamics of the segregation are discussed. The longer term goal of this study is to identify cathode compositions which have long term stability to exposure to trace anode side gases.

Abstract:Double perovskite SmSrCo2−xMnxO5+δ (SSCM, x=0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) oxides are designed and evaluated as cathode materials for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). Effect of Mn/Co molar ratio on structural, conductivity, thermal and electrochemical properties for SSCM is systematically investigated. With increasing x from 0.0 to 1.0, the structure does not change. At the same time, the SSCM material exhibits good chemical compatibility with Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 (GDC) electrolytes at 950°C for 6h. The thermal expansion coefficient of SSCM decreases with increasing x, which is helpful to thermally match with the electrolyte. The electrical conductivity decreases with x and the SSCM system exhibits a metal to semiconductor transition around x=0.4 and 0.6. With increasing Mn substitution content for Co, the area specific resistance (ASR) increases from 0.073Ωcm2 (x=0.0) to 0.140Ωcm2 (x=0.8) at 700°C. Preliminary results indicate that SSCM is especially promising as a cathode for IT-SOFCs.

Abstract:In order to mitigate the detrimental effect of cathode poisoning induced by Cr in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) metallic interconnects, a potential remedial strategy is to deposit spinel coatings on the surface of the steel for protective purposes. However, powder-based deposition methods typically require post-treatment at high temperature, which causes severe oxidation reaction and is detrimental to mechanical properties. In this study, a novel approach is introduced: using a nano-spherical CuFe2O4 spinel powder as a direct coating. Thanks to its excellent sintering ability, this coating can be applied directly under SOFC working conditions without additional heat treatment. Characterization techniques like X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) confirmed the cubic crystalline phase and nano-spherical morphology of CuFe2O4 powder synthesized via the solvothermal method. Importantly, this powder displayed enhanced sintering capability, reducing the sintering temperature approximately to SOFC operational temperature. When applied as a protective coating for SUS 430 interconnects, the CuFe2O4 spinel nano-spherical powder demonstrated remarkable effects, including reduced alloy oxidation, mitigated increase in area specific resistance (ASR), and effective prevention of chromium outward diffusion. As a result, the service life of the SOFC single cell in contact with the CuFe2O4 spinel nano-spherical powder-coated interconnect was significantly prolonged.
