Abstract:Among a number of English translations of Lisao, Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s version and Xu Yuanchong’s version are often regarded as the most representative ones. The article, based on the self-built parallel corpus of Lisao and the corpora of English British Romantic Poems, explores the stylistic features of Lisao's English translations of the Yangs and Xu Yuanchong through analysis of the collected data. The findings have shown that the Yang’s version is more variable in the use of words, more complex in sentence structures and more difficult in readability than Xu’s. The former has the tendency of explicitation while the latter simplification; In addition, the Yang’s version is faithful and close to the original structure, and Xu’s is simple and smooth in diction and sentence structure. The stylistic differences of the two translations by the Yangs and Xu can be attributed to the translators’ different views on translation their purposes and the strategies they chose.
Seeing Various Adventures Through a Mirror: Detecting Translator's Stylistic Visibility in Chinese Translations of Alice's Adventure in Wonderland

Abstract:The visibility of translator's style is a much-discussed topic in translation studies with the application of corpus tools. So far, however, no agreement has been reached. The present study aims to explore this issue by a comparison of three Chinese translations of the English literary work, Alice's Adventure in Wonderland, using two stylometric techniques, bootstrap consensus tree analyses, and bootstrap consensus network analyses. The results show that all the three Chinese translations preserved the style of the original text and that individual translator's style could not be identified based on the entire set of part-of-speech (POS) tags. Furthermore, a feature selection method (the chi-square metric) was used to obtain the top fifteen distinctive POS unigrams and bigrams, and these distinctive features successfully identified translatorial fingerprints across the three translations examined. The findings suggest that translators have their own stylistic choices when translating the same text, but their stylistic differences can only be detected by distinctive features. Our attempt to combine feature selection methods and stylometric techniques may offer new insights into the investigation of translator's stylistic visibility in translation studies.
A Corpus-based Study of Gaoxin Huang’s Poetry Translation Style

Abstract:Though he himself is not a poet, Gaoxin Huang (1936-) has published a dozen of translated poetry collections. Huang has further developed the poetry translation strategy of “yidun daibu” (substituting pause for foot) on the basis of his predecessors and proposed quantitative standards of poetic meter and the “Emulation Method”. This study attempts to examine Huang’s poetry translation style with a corpus-based quantitative and qualitative study. For the study two corpora are constructed: a bilingual parallel corpus of 100 English poems with their Chinese translations and a monolingual comparable corpus of Chinese translations of 100 English poems and 280 original Chinese poems. Data on lexicon, syntax and phonology are collected from the two corpora to address the stylistic characteristics of Huang’s poetry translation at the lexical, syntactic and phonological levels. Huang’s translation employs a richer vocabulary than the original English poems, and the choice of words is more akin to the original Chinese poems. Huang does not replicate the original poem, but preserves the original poem’s harmony of structure, rhythm, and word count by substituting the Chinese pause for the English foot and making full use of the Chinese conjunctions.
Using corpora to reveal style in translation: The case of The Song of Everlasting Sorrow

Abstract:This article reports on a corpus-based study of the English translation of Wang Anyi's award-winning novel, The Song of Everlasting Sorrow [, Chang Hen Ge] from the perspective of style. Using the keyword and concordance functions of corpus software packages AntConc and ParaConc, this research focuses on how the translator's style reveals itself in the target text (TT) as well as how the style of the source text (ST) is represented in the TT. Findings show that the translators have a preference for contracted negative verb forms and expressions such as "bit" over "little," making the text more colloquial. In general, the rendering of the ST style tends not to be entirely faithful. A distinction between reader-centered and text-centered keywords is made. While the reader-centered ST keywords are, as expected, largely altered, the translation of text-centered ST keywords is also rewritten, contrary to expectations. Presumably, the translators tended to reduce the ambiguity of the ST, resulting in a more explicit TT. The article argues that the translators chose to rewrite the translation to make it more understandable for the target audience since it concerned a work from a source culture very different from the target culture.

Abstract:Based on a corpus-driven analysis of two translated versions of Hongloumeng (one by David Hawkes and the other by Xianyi Yang and Gladys Yang) in parallel corpora, this article investigates the use of lexical bundles in an attempt to trace the stylistic features and differences in the translations produced by the respective translators. The Hongloumeng corpus is developed at the sentence level to facilitate co-occurrence of the source texts and the two corresponding translations. For this purpose, the three-word and four-word lexical bundles were first extracted and then analyzed with respect to the functional classification proposed by Biber et al. (2004). The results of the study show that Hawkes' translation is embedded with a greater number and variety of lexical bundles than the one by the Yang couple. The study also identified the differences between the two versions which can be traced back to the deployment of different translation strategies of the translators, appearing in turn to be influenced by the language backgrounds of the translators, the translation skopos and settings, and the social, political, and ideological milieu in which the translations were produced.

Abstract:Abstract This study examines the style of two English translations of Hongloumeng , by David Hawkes, and Xianyi Yang and Gladys Yang. It makes use of multidimensional analysis to identify how the two translations differ in their sub-registers (narration and fictional speech). The results reveal that the Yangs’ translation of narration is relatively more narrative and context-independent, whereas Hawkes’ is more active and context-bound. Similarly, Hawkes’ translation of fictional speech is more conversational and interactional and tends more towards the orality scale with a strong emphasis on the involvement of fictional characters. In contrast, the Yangs’ translation of fictional speech tends to be more informational and explicit. These stylistic differences reflect the translators’ conscious and/or unconscious choices, which are attributable to their language backgrounds, translation strategies, and cultural stances. By taking sub-register variation and the functions of linguistic features into consideration, the article outlines a new approach to investigating translation style.

Abstract:Based on the self-built English translation corpus of Mencius, this study conducts a lexical, syntactical and textual comparative analysis of Mencius English translations by James Legge (1861), Leonard A.Lyall (1932) and D.C.Lau (1970) through adopting a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods and employing Tokenizer, Tree Tagger, WordSmith8.0, AntConc and Readability Analyzer software. By analyzing representative translation examples and the para-text of each translation, this study explores the relationship among the historical background, translator's cultural identity and translation motivation. The results reveal that the translator's style is closely related to the translation strategy determined by the translation purpose rooted in translator's cultural identity in different historical and social backgrounds.The study findings will bring a new perspective for the translator's cultural identity research, contribute to the translator's style study and deepen the understanding of the English translation and overseas dissemination of Mencius with the help of corpus technology.

Abstract:Hongloumeng by Xueqin Cao (Hsueh-ch‘in Ts'ao) is generally considered one of the greatest classical Chinese novel. Of all nine published English translations known today, the one translated by Hawkes and Minford (the Story of the Stone, Penguin, 1973–86) and the other by Yang and Yang (A Dream of Red Mansions1, Foreign Languages Press in Beijing, 1978–80) are the best known among translators and literary scholars. Over the years, both have been carefully scrutinized and much critiqued. Translators and translation scholars have been engaged in heated debates over salient features of the translations, strategies employed by the translators, the possible effects of the two translations and so on [cf. Liu and Gu (1997) On translation of cultural contents in Hong Lou Meng [in Chinese]. Chinese Translators Journal, 1: 16–19; Wang (2001) A Comparative Study of the English Translations of Poetry in Hong Lou Meng. Like many debates of similar nature, no definitive conclusions have been reached despite such an intense interest. We believe a corpus-assisted examination [Baker, M. (2000). Towards a methodology for investigating the style of a literary translator. Target, 12(2): 241–66; Baker, M. (1993). Corpus linguistics and translation studies: Implications and applications. A particular effort is further made to interpret the reasons for the different strategies adopted by the two different pairs of translators in the social, political, and ideological context of the translations.
A Corpus-Based Study on the Translation Style of Five English Versions of Fu Sheng Liu Ji, Vol I

Abstract:Using a corpus approach, this article investigates the translation styles of the first chapter of Fu Sheng Liu Ji at three levels: the statistical parameters, the translation of culture-specific lexis, and readability calculations. It is found that Lin's version uses simpler words which makes it easier for the average English reader to understand traditional Chinese literature; while Wu's translation borrows to a great extent from the Lin's version, and its style is consistent with Lin's translation. The Pratt and Jiang's translation is the most annotated and readable by the average English reader. Sanders' version is centered on the source language, showing the translator's translation stance of spreading Chinese culture, with a tendency to move closer to thick translation. Black's version is more special in that the translator often imitates the author's tone to add cultural information to the original text. The main reasons for the very different styles of the five translations are due to the differences in the translators' social-culture backgrounds and the target readers.

It starts with an analysis of what is meant by style and a literature review of research on translator's style and then goes on to introduce ways to conduct corpus-based study of translator's style. A case study concerning the comparative analysis of two translators' styles in the use of BEI construction is used to help readers gain a clear idea of the research approaches and methodologies for corpus-based study of translator's style.
Discourse Presentation Translation As an Indicator of Translator’s Style: A Case Study of Lao She’s Luotuo Xiangzi and Its Three English Translations

Abstract:Based on comparisons of results from similar research, it is noticed that corpus statistics such as type-token ratio, mean sentence length and patterns of reporting structure are not very effective in differentiating different translators’ styles. It is proposed in this chapter that, apart from the translator’s style resulting from their unconscious use of the target language regardless of the source texts (i.e., the T-Type), studies of translator’s style should also take account of their purposeful strategies for coping with particular language patterns in the source text/language which show some consistency in all their translations (i.e., the S-type). The study in this chapter investigates the styles of three English translations of the Chinese novel Luotuo Xiangzi respectively by Jean James, Shi Xiaojing and Howard Goldblatt, focusing on the renderings of discourse presentation. The results show that the three translators differ significantly in their renderings of particular forms of Chinese discourse presentation which can be taken as an indicator of the S-type translator’s style.
A Corpus-based Approach to Children's Literature Translation

Abstract:Based on the review of children's literature translation research(CLT)in China and abroad,this paper points out that CLT is relatively weak in China,not to mention the corpus-based approach to CLT.The paper illustrated the corpus-based approach to translator's style in CLT by investigating Ren's and Ye's Chinese version of The Little Mermaid in terms of TTR,sentence length and punctuations.The research findings indicate that Ren's is typical of long sentences and high lexical density while Ye's is more sentimental and readable than Ren's.It is sentence length,punctuations as well as lexical density that distinguish Ren's translation from Ye's and can hence be considered features of translator's style.

Abstract:The paper aims to,on the basis of dependency grammar,investigate how Chinese words are used in texts of different styles to fulfill syntactic function in corpora.We use two dependency corpora —XINWENLIANBO and SHIHUASHISHUO— as the samples of written Chinese and spoken Chinese,and two smaller dependency corpora,XJ-K and XJ-S,as supplements.The results show that spoken Chinese and written Chinese show considerable difference in the word classes that are used to fulfill certain syntactic function.To be specific,most subjects are nouns in written Chinese,while pronouns in spoken Chinese.In addition,in spoken Chinese,many word classes can serve as attributives,and yet it is overwhelmingly nouns that serve as attributives in written Chinese.

Abstract:This paper is a detailed account of the application of parallel corpus to the teaching of style and translation. Facilitated by corpus tools, a quantitative and qualitative comparative analysis of the translation of narrative markers, a key style of Chinese full-length vernacular fictions, is thoroughly demonstrated. Through the class learning, students are expected to be aware of the pseudo oral storytelling feature of Chinese vernacular fictions and understand that narrative markers, as crucial narrative devices ensuring the cohesion and coherence of the text and more importantly, reflecting the style of the genre, require proper rendition in translation. It concludes that the introduction of parallel corpus to Style and Translation class obtains positive effects. On the one hand, parallel corpus provides abundant authentic bilingual data for observation; on the other hand, convenient searching tools help sort out the desired data in an accurate and swift manner, thus facilitate class demonstration and discussion.

Abstract:Abstract The core of translation is language conversion, but it should be more of an aesthetic experience, a transformation of different ways of thinking. This paper proposes a neural semantic analysis method for English translation based on text similarity calculation. The technique uses a large-scale corpus to train the vector space model of words, establishes a concept-context matrix through the term-document matrix, and determines each value of the concept vector with a weight according to the literary translation in the knowledge base. The information extraction and evaluation of the English-translated text through semantic similarity calculation provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent analysis of style conversion and linguistic, and aesthetic reproduction of the English-translated text. The study will take the Lin Yutang translation and the Ricardian translation of The Analects of Confucius as an example to develop the analysis of style transformation and reproduction of linguistic beauty of the English-translated text from both lexical and syntactic levels. The results show that the lexical density of Lin Yutang’s translation is 0.5866, while that of Rie Jacob’s translation is 0.5334, with the former significantly larger than the latter. It shows that Lin Yutang’s translation of The Analects of Confucius adopts a naturalization strategy, i.e., To disseminate Chinese culture in a way that is authentic, familiar to English readers, and easy to understand, so as to make his linguistic expression more emotional.
The Translator's Invisibility and the Lingo-stylistic Determination of Fu Lei's Translation

Abstract:The lingo-stylistic determination of Fu Lei' s translation can be accounted for by referring to the aesthetic ideals he upheld, the importance he attached to fluency and readability of translations, and his concern for the target readers' acceptability. And this determination in turn accounts for his espousal of "bearing a spiritual resemblance to the original" as a guiding principle for translation and for the marked domesticating tendency that informs his translational works. Inspired by this principle, he believed that ideally, a translation should read like "the original author writing in the target language." To produce such effects, he would not hesitate to transform the source language' s lexical and syntactic features.
A Corpus-based Analysis of Attitudinal Changes in Lin Yutang's Self-translation of Between Tears and Laughter

Abstract:Attitude is omnipresent in almost every type of text. There has yet to be any relevant research on attitudinal shifts in self-translation. The Chinese version of Between Tears and Laughter is a rare case of self-translation and co-translation in that the first 11 chapters are self-translated by Lin Yutang, and the last 12 chapters by Xu Chengbin. The current study conducted a word frequency analysis of this book's English and Chinese versions with LIWC and AntConc, and made comparative research into Lin Yutang's attitudinal changes. The results show that due to different writing purposes and readerships, there is less anger in Lin's self-translation (M=0.7755, SD=0.2775) than in the first 11 chapters of the English original (M=1.1036, SD=0.3861), which is a significant difference (t=2.2892, p=0.0331). This attitudinal change is also reflected in the translations of some n-grams containing anger words. In contrast, there is no significant difference (t=1.88, p=0.07) between Xu's co-translation and the corresponding part of the original in attitude "anger". This paper believes that corpus tools can help co-translators keep their translation consistent in attitude.

Abstract:In this research, we established a small scale corpus with abstracts in English and Chinese from the law reviews of Taiwan. We identified problems found in these abstracts and classified them into several categories. After analyzing the problems, we found that translators are faced with numerous problems when translating legal texts: the influence of ordinary language, lack of reliable reference tools, insufficiency of legal knowledge, deficiency in the target language or source language, and the peculiar characteristics of legal language. These problems simply render the task of translating even more intricate. Strategies will be proposed to enhance the ability of legal translators and to help them to overcome these obstacles.

The Interpreter and Translator Trainer

Abstract:This study describes a stylistics-based pedagogical approach to literary translation. Such a stylistic approach was conceived in an attempt to resolve what might be seen as a paradox in today’s classroom: that despite style being persistently invoked as a top priority in literary translation, it is seldom examined in systematic detail or dissected into operable parts. It is proposed here that a set of tools can be defined, taught and explored through the discipline of stylistics to assist in the accomplishment of the style imperative. The study examines first the theoretical background to the approach and pedagogical motivations underpinning it. It then details the design and implementation of a semester-long course entitled ‘Translating Chinese Literature’ that engages third-year translation majors in inverse literary translation at a Chinese university, zooming in on a module of linguistic foregrounding. In conclusion, outcomes of the approach are shown with reference to questionnaire responses.

Abstract:No agreement has yet been reached as to whether translators are visible or not in translation. To answer this question, we first chose Lin Yutang and James Legge as cases, supplemented their translations with their originals, and then applied Principal Component Analysis along with N-MFW metrics to the texts for their stylistic features. In our cases, we found that (1) for each translator, the styles of their originals and translations vary; (2) for both translators, the styles of their translations converge for the same source text; (3) the two translators preserve only part of their stylistic fingerprints in their translations, suggesting the existence of a powerful compensation mechanism. Our findings bring new insights into the translator's style, help settle the (in)visibility dispute, and illustrate effective metrics for developing translator identification tools.
