Abstract:A radical cascade decarboxylation/cyclization of 2-isocyanobiphenyls with aliphatic carboxylic acids as well as aromatic carboxylic acids under the transition metal-free conditions was reported. This process, which included formation of two new C-C bonds and cleavage of C-COOH bonds, afforded a novel and environmentally friendly approach to producing 6-alkyl/aryl phenanthridines with moderate to good yields.

Abstract:Oxidative transformations of phenols have attracted significant attention of chemists due to their importance in biological process and organic synthesis. In contrast to the relatively well-developed oxygenation and coupling reactions of phenols, the highly efficient and selective oxidative ring cleavage of phenols is under-represented. This work describes a novel CuCl-catalyzed tandem homocoupling/skeletal rearrangement of phenols that realizes the cleavage of the phenol ring by using air or Ag2CO3 as the oxidant. Interestingly, simply changing the oxidant to K2S2O8 results in the oxidative coupling/cyclization of phenols to give dibenzofurans. These results set an important precedent of oxidant-controlled catalytic transformations of phenols.

Abstract:A new cascade radical addition/cyclization of unactivated alkenes and phosphine oxides has been developed. A wide variety of bioactive phosphine-containing quinazolinones were obtained in up to 91% yield for 34 examples under transition-metal-free conditions. This cascade protocol represents an environmentally friendly and efficient way to build phosphine-containing quinazolinones in excellent yields under mild conditions with a broad substrate scope and high atomic economy.

Abstract:An array of redox-neutral alkylation/cyclization cascade reactions of N-functionalized acrylamides with cycloalkyl hydroperoxides were achieved via the alkoxyl radical-triggered C-C bond cleavage. Through adjusting the radical acceptors on the N atom, a variety of keto-alkylated chain-containing azaheterocycles, including indolo[2,1-a]isoquinolin-6(5H)-ones, quinoline-2,4-diones, and pyrido[4,3,2-gh]phenanthridines were constructed by a one-pot procedure with good yields and excellent functional group tolerance.

Abstract:A metal- and hypervalent iodine reagent-free electrochemical oxidative dearomatization-induced [5+2] cycloaddition/pinacol rearrangement cascade reaction was described. The electrosynthetic method showed strong tolerance for vinylphenols, ethynylphenols, and allenylphenols, which thus enabled the rapid assembly of diversely functionalized bicyclo[3.2.1]octanes in 41-95% yields and up to >20:1 dr. This protocol could be scaled up to gram amounts and should find wide application in complex natural product synthesis.

Abstract:A variety of dihydropyrrole-functionalized phenanthridines were efficiently synthesized by the metal-free, radical cascade cyclization reaction of 2-isocyanobiphenyls with γ,δ-unsaturated oxime esters. The C-N/C-C/C-C bonds were formed via the oil bath method in a one-pot procedure with broad substrate applicability. The radical process was supported by kinetic isotope effect studies and radical inhibition studies.

Abstract:Benzoquinone and 9-phenylanthracene barely undergo anticipated cycloaddition under acid catalysis. Instead, 9-anthracenyl aryl ethers are obtained as unexpected products. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction likely undergoes an ionic mechanism between protonated anthracene species and nucleophilic oxygen of 1,4-benzoquinone or 1,4-hydroquinone. A variety of 9-anthracenyl aryl ethers are constructed with this method. Produced anthracenyl aryl ethers are potential scaffolds for new fluorescent molecules.

Abstract:We reported a one‐pot photocyclization/ oxidation cascade of N‐aryl acrylamides to afford quinoline‐2‐ones. Thioxanthone was used as a bifunctional energy transfer agent to mediate both photocyclization and generation of singlet oxygen, the latter facilitates the dehydrogenation of dihydroquinoline‐2‐one intermediate. This cascade strategy also supports the 5‐endo‐trig cyclization to synthesize tetrahydrocarbazolones from phenylamino cyclohexenones.

Abstract:A novel family of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons of various shapes based on the 10H-indeno[1,2-b]triphenylene skeleton has been synthesized via a reaction sequence of Diels-Alder reaction, decarbonylation, followed by an oxidative cyclization. In particular, the reaction conditions for regioselective oxidative cyclization promoted by FeCl3 are investigated, and this reaction is employed as an effective method to afford the above molecules under mild conditions. Their photophysical properties in dilute solution are also reported.

Abstract:The synthesis, properties, and application of carbonyl-bridged phenanthrene, namely phenanthrenone are described. A new synthetic route involving palladium-catalyzed annulation between 4,5-dibromo-9-fluorenone and internal alkynes was developed to simplify the synthesis of phenanthrenone, which is a type of undeveloped building blocks. The reaction tolerates a variety of substituents at the alkynes and proceeds in moderate yields. Phenanthrenone derivatives possess the advantages of both fluorenone and phenanthrene backbones, such as extended conjugation, good planarity and rigidity, and tunable energy gap. These attractive features make phenanthrenone an ideal electron-deficient π-building block for developing novel polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In addition, the phenanthrenone derivatives can be served as organic photoredox catalysts for organocatalytic atom transfer radical polymerization and oxidation of alcohol.
