Abstract:Aqueous nonmetallic ion batteries have garnered significant interest due to their cost-effectiveness, environmental sustainability, and inherent safety features. Specifically, ammonium ion (NH4+) as a charge carrier has garnered more and more attention recently. However, one of the persistent challenges is enhancing the electrochemical properties of vanadium dioxide (VO2) with a tunnel structure, which serves as a highly efficient NH4+ (de)intercalation host material. Herein, a novel architecture, wherein carbon-coated VO2 nanobelts (VO2@C) with a core-shell structure are engineered to augment NH4+ storage capabilities of VO2. In detail, VO2@C is synthesized via the glucose reduction of vanadium pentoxide under hydrothermal conditions. Experimental results manifest that the introduction of the carbon layer on VO2 nanobelts can enhance mass transfer, ion transport and electrochemical kinetics, thereby culminating in the improved NH4+ storage efficiency. VO2@C core-shell composite exhibits a remarkable specific capacity of ∼300 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g, which is superior to that of VO2 (∼238 mAh/g) and various other electrode materials used for NH4+ storage. The NH4+ storage mechanism can be elucidated by the reversible NH4+ (de)intercalation within the tunnel of VO2, facilitated by the dynamic formation and dissociation of hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, when integrated into a full battery with polyaniline (PANI) cathode, the VO2@C//PANI full battery demonstrates robust electrochemical performances, including a specific capacity of ∼185 mAh·g-1 at 0.2 A·g-1, remarkable durability of 93 % retention after 1500 cycles, as well as high energy density of 58 Wh·kg-1 at 5354 W·kg-1. This work provides a pioneering approach to design and explore composite materials for efficient NH4+ storage, offering significant implications for future battery technology enhancements.

Abstract:In order to investigate the effects of acidification conditions on its microstructure and electrochemical performance,vanadium pentoxide powder was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and post heat treatment of ammonium metavanadate solution which was acidized by nitric acid or oxalic acid.The microstructure and electrochemical performance of the powder were investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD),field emission scanning electron microscope(SEM),transmission electron microscope(TEM) and electrochemical workstation,respectively.The results showed that the powder was pure vanadium pentoxide.Both the pH value of the precursor solution and the radical anion of the used acid had influence on the crystal growth and microstructure of the final powder.Among all,the powder obtained by nitric acid acidizing ammonium metavanadate solution to pH=3 was nanorods about 100nm in diameter.Its 30th discharge specific capacities were both about 150mAh/g at 0.5 and 1C discharge rate,and behaved better at rate capability.

Abstract:Vanadium-based materials have been extensively studied as promising cathode materials for zinc-ion batteries because of their multiple valences and adjustable ion-diffusion channels. However, the sluggish kinetics of Zn-ion intercalation and less stable layered structure remain bottlenecks that limit their further development. The present work introduces potassium ions to partially substitute ammonium ions in ammonium vanadate, leading to a subtle shrinkage of lattice distance and the increased oxygen vacancies. The resulting potassium ammonium vanadate exhibits a high discharge capacity (464 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1) and excellent cycling stability (90% retention over 3000 cycles at 5 A g-1). The excellent electrochemical properties and battery performances are attributed to the rich oxygen vacancies. The introduction of K+ to partially replace NH4+ appears to alleviate the irreversible deammoniation to prevent structural collapse during ion insertion/extraction. Density functional theory calculations show that potassium ammonium vanadate has a modulated electron structure and a better zinc-ion diffusion path with a lower migration barrier.
From 0D to 3D: Controllable synthesis of ammonium vanadate materials for Zn 2+ storage with superior rate performance and cycling stability

Abstract:Vanadium-based materials are one of the most promising cathodes for aqueous zinc ion batteries owing to their adjustable layered structure and high specific capacity. However, the sluggish Zn 2+ diffusion kinetics and inferior structural stability still hinder their further development. Here, selective control of the structure of ammonium vanadate (NVO) materials is successfully achieved by a simple hydrothermal method, and the relationship between structure and performance is clarified. It was found that the amount of citric acid in the precursor solution is a vital factor for this morphology evolution. Density functional theory calculations show that the oxygen vacancies could modulate the electron structure of NVO and effectively weaken the electrostatic interaction between Zn 2+ and the NVO lattice. Benefitting from the isotropic structure with abundant oxygen vacancies, the amorphous NVO nanodots exhibit superior reaction kinetics. The specific energy of 148.5 Wh kg −1 was achieved at a power density of 3300 W kg −1 , along with a high capacity retention of 81% even after 5000 cycles at 5 A g −1 . This work not only provides a new strategy for the controllable synthesis of vanadium-based materials but also reveals the great application potential of amorphous materials in metal-ion batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) have garnered ongoing scientific and technological interest for safe and eco-friendly energy storage. However, one of the critical challenges is to explore advanced cathode materials for stable and robust zinc ion diffusion. Herein, we demonstrate a simple hydrothermal method to synthesis a new model cathode material of (NH4)2V7O16•3.6H2O. A systematic experimental and theoretical work is carried out to uncover the advantages of ammonium insertion in V7O16 layers. Specifically, the ZIB delivers a reversible capacity of 465 and 214 mAh g−1 at current densities of 0.1 and 5.0 A g−1, respectively. Also, it enables an outstanding long-term stability after 1000 cycles at 5A g−1. Combination of electrochemical investigation and DFT calculations reveals that the unique interlayer structure of (NH4)2V7O16•3.6H2O endows the favorable Zn2+ diffusion with suitable adsorption energy and low diffusion energy barrier. This work may pave the way for constructing other high-performance cathode materials for ZIBs and other metal ions batteries.

In Situ Electrochemical Transformation Reaction of Ammonium-Anchored Heptavanadate Cathode for Long-Life Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising portable and large-scale grid energy storage devices, as they are safe and economical. However, developing suitable ZIB cathode materials with excellent cycling performance characteristics remains a challenging task. Here, ammonium heptavanadate (NH4)2V7O16·3.2H2O (NHVO) nanosquares with mixed-valence V5+/V4+ as a cathode are developed for high-performance ZIBs. The layered NHVO shows a capacity of 362 mA h g–1 at 0.05 A g–1, with a high energy density of 263.5 W h kg–1. It exhibits an initial specific capacity of 250.7 mA h g–1 at a current density of 4 A g–1 and retains 255 mA h g–1 capacity after 1000 charge/discharge cycles. The V7O16-based cathode was demonstrated with a phase transition to the V2O5-based cathode upon initial cycling. Topochemical behavior of ferrocene embedded in V2O5·nH2O with weak hydrogen bonding enhancing ammonium-ion storage

Abstract:Aqueous ammonium ion batteries (AAIBs) are garnering increasing attention due to their utilization of abundant resources, cost-effectiveness, safety, and unique energy storage mechanism. The pursuit of high-performance cathode materials has become a pressing issue. In this study, we propose and synthesize ferrocene-embedded hydrated vanadium pentoxide (Fer/VOH) for implementation in AAIBs. The inclusion of ferrocene serves to expand the interlayer spacing, mitigate interlayer forces, and introduce the electron-rich environment characteristic of ferrocene. This augmentation facilitates the creation of additional oxygen vacancies, substantially enhancing the capacity and efficiency of ammonium ion storage. Notably, our investigation reveals that the incorporation of ferrocene attenuates the hydrogen bonding interactions associated with ammonium ions, rendering them more amenable to the interlayer embedding and release processes. Building upon these advantages, Fer/VOH exhibits a specific capacity of 313 mAh/g at a current density of 0.2 A/g, representing the highest reported performance among vanadium oxides utilized in AAIBs to date. Even after 2000 charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 2 A/g, Fer/VOH maintains a reversible specific capacity of 89 mAh/g, with a capacity retention rate of 54.8%. This study confirms the viability of Fer/VOH as a cathode material for AAIBs and offers a novel approach to enhancing the electrical conductivity and diminishing the hydrogen bonding forces in vanadium oxide intercalation through the embedding of electron-rich species and positronic groups.

Abstract:This study explores the enhancement of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) using ammonium-enhanced vanadium oxide cathodes. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal that NH4+ incorporation into V6O16 lattices significantly facilitates Zn2+ ion diffusion by reducing electrostatic interactions, acting as a structural lubricant. Subsequent experimental validation using (NH4)2V6O16 cathodes synthesized via a hydrothermal method corroborates the DFT findings, demonstrating remarkable electrochemical stability with a capacity retention of 90% after 2000 cycles at 5 A g−1. These results underscore the potential of NH4+ in improving the performance and longevity of AZIBs, providing a pathway for sustainable energy storage solutions.

Abstract:The cathode material plays a crucial role in the performances of aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs). Herein, we report an ammonium vanadate (NH4V4O10∙0.28H2O, NHVO) aqueous ZIB cathode material. The obtained NHVO microflowers manifest high discharge capacity (410 mAh g‐1 at 0.2 A g‐1), long‐term durability (76 % capacity retention over 500 cycles) as well as ideal rate performance (112 mAh g‐1 at 10 A g‐1). The impressive electrochemical performance can be attributed to the ammonium ion and crystal water co‐assisted Zn2+ intercalation/de‐intercalation, which has been demonstrated by various ex‐situ and in‐situ characterizations. Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries have been extensively researched due to their distinctive advantages such as low cost and high safety. Vanadium oxides are important cathode materials, however, poor cycle life caused by vanadium dissolution limits their application. Recent studies show that the lattice NH4+ in vanadium oxides can act as a pillar to enhance structural stability and play a crucial role in improving its cycling stability. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of research on the effect of the lattice NH4+ content on structural evolution and electrochemical performance. Herein, we synthesize vanadium oxides with different contents of lattice NH4+ by a one‐step hydrothermal reaction. The vanadium oxides with lattice NH4+ exhibit high initial capacity, as well as good cycling stability and rate performance compared to bare vanadium oxide. Combined with electrochemical analyses, ex‐situ structural characterizations, and in‐situ X‐ray diffraction tests, we reveal that the lattice NH4+ content plays a positive role in vanadium oxides' structural stability and cation diffusion kinetics. This work presents a direction for designing high‐performance vanadium cathodes for aqueous zinc ion batteries.

Abstract:In the past decade, vanadates have attracted one's attention as the electrode materials for aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs). Nevertheless, their structural instability and sluggish ion/electron dynamics lead to an inevitable decline in the electrochemical performance. To address these issues, we introduce oxygen vacancies into NH4V4O10 nanosheets to improve the ion transport rate during the electrochemical reaction. The prepared NHVO-40 samples provide many active sites compared to NH4V4O10 materials. The assembled cell delivers a capacity of 452.03 mAh g-1 at a current density of 0.2 A g-1. It also presents a retention rate of 94.6% at 10 A g-1 after 4000 times cycling. In addition, they still possess an energy density of 332.5 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 70 W kg-1.

Abstract:Ammonium vanadium bronze (NH4V4O10) has garnered increasing attention due to its extensive electrochemical applications. The development of NH4V4O10 with high conductivity and fast ion diffusion ability remains to be a significant challenge. In this work, we report a facile synthesis of Mo-doped NH4V4O10 via a one-step hydrothermal reaction. The morphology evolution process and phase transformation of Mo-doped NH4V4O10 are investigated by controlling the Mo concentration. When investigated as an aqueous Zn-ion battery cathode material, the as-optimized Mo-doped NH4V4O10 exhibits a high capacity of 335.0 mAh g−1 at a current density of 0.1 A g−1, and it is also able to demonstrate superior capacity retention and better cycle performance than the undoped NH4V4O10. The enhanced electrochemical performance is mainly due to the expansion of the (001) interlayer spacing of NH4V4O10 caused by the intercalation of Mo into the framework, which provides more space for Zn ion intercalation. Moreover, the doping of Mo decreases the band gap of NH4V4O10, which is verified by the UV–Vis (Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy) spectrum and DFT (density-functional theory) calculations. The reduced band gap leads to a higher intrinsic carrier concentration, which in turn improves the electrical conductivity and the Zn ion diffusion coefficient of the material. Thus, based on these results, this work may present a new strategy in designing potential cathode for Zn-ion battery.

High performance of co-doped V2O5 cathode material in V2O5-saturated (NH4)2SO4 electrolyte for ammonium ion battery

Abstract:Aqueous ammonium-ion batteries are eco-friendly and abundant systems that exhibit diffusion. These systems have been reported in recent years. Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) with a layered structure is a good electrode material. A Co-doped V2O5 cathode characterized by good reversibility and rate performance was prepared using the hydrothermal method to improve the ionic diffusion kinetics characterizing the systems and address the issue of low conductivity of V2O5. Saturated V2O5 (NH4)2SO4 solution was used as the electrolyte to fabricate the ammonium ion battery. Pure V2O5 and V2O5 samples with varying levels of cobalt dopants, V2O5-2Co samples doped with 2 % cobalt exhibited a maximum capacity of 172 mAh g–1 and coulombic efficiency of 61.6 % after 500 cycles at the current density of 1.0 A g–1. This indicated good cyclic reversibility. The high energy density was established to be ~152 Wh kg–1, and the capacity retention rate was 49.2 % after 1000 cycles. These results indicate that Co-doped V2O5 nanoparticles can potentially help in improving the electronic conductivity of the system and provide an effective pathway for rapid electron transfer.

Abstract:Aqueous ammonium-ion batteries (AAIBs) are attracting attention, mainly due to the unique interaction between NH4+ and the host materials. Yet, few studies focus on the development of high-performance anode materials for NH4+ storage, hindering the applications of AAIBs. Herein, we study the electrochemical NH4+ storage properties of an electrodeposited vanadium oxide/polypyrrole (VOx@PPy) electrode with a core–shell structure. The strong interaction between PPy and VOx enhances the electrochemical performance of the composite electrode. The electrons in N atoms from PPy are attracted by V cations from VOx, resulting in the enhanced protonation level of PPy and the reduction of V in the composite material. Therefore, VOx@PPy exhibits a high specific capacity of 195.36 mAh/g at 0.2 A/g in ammonium acetate electrolyte, outperforming other reported anode materials for NH4+ storage. In addition, the conformal PPy coating can efficiently suppress VOx dissolution, leading to good cycling stability for VOx@PPy. We assembled an aqueous ammonium-ion battery using VOx@PPy as the anode. The device exhibits a good energy density of 74.1 Wh kg−1 at the power density of 75.6 W kg−1. This work highlights the advantages of the hybrid organic/inorganic materials for NH4+ storage and could push the development of aqueous ammonium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The local coordination environment of vanadium in ammonium vanadate is modulated via F atoms to increase interlayer spacing and electronic conductivity, resulting in fast reaction kinetics and stable structure. Such changes, in turn, enhance the zinc ion storage capacity, energy conversion efficiency, as well as lifespan. The reversible process of Zn2+ intercalation/deintercalation is clarified in the materials. The electrochemical properties of vanadium‐based materials as cathode materials for aqueous zinc ion batteries are still restricted by low conductivity, sluggish reaction kinetics, and poor structural stability. Herein, the [VO6] octahedron, as the basic unit of vanadium‐oxide layer of ammonium vanadates (NH4V4O10, denoted as NVO), is incorporated by F atoms to regulate the coordinated environment of vanadium. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results show that both physicochemical and electrochemical properties of NVO are improved by F‐doping. The enhanced electronic conductivity accelerates the electron transfer and the expanded interlayer spacing expedites the diffusion kinetics of zinc ions. As a result, the F‐doped NVO (F‐NVO) electrode shows a high discharge capacity (465 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1), good rate capability (260 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1), and long‐term cycling stability (88% capacity retention over 2000 cycles at 4 A g−1). The reaction kinetics and energy storage mechanism of F‐NVO are further validated by in situ and ex situ characterizations.
