Abstract:Ho3+/Yb3+ co-doped and Ho3+/Yb3+/Ce3+ tri-doped 85TeO2–5Bi2O3–10ZnO glasses were synthesized by the melt-quenching method. The structural and spectral properties were investigated comprehensively according to Raman, absorption, and fluorescence spectra. By evaluating the energy transfer process, the 2 μm emission behavior has been enhanced effectively with the introduction of a glass network modifier (CeO2), which can be ascribed to the population of Ho3+: 5I7 accelerated by cross-relaxation (CR) between Ho3+ and Ce3+. A large emission cross-section (1.11 × 10−20 cm2) and gain coefficient (2.12 cm−1) have been obtained of Ho3+ at around 2 μm band in TBZHYC2 glass, where a significant advancement has been achieved compared with the glass fiber core without CeO2. Moreover, the energy transfer mechanisms between Ho3+/Yb3+ and Ho3+/Ce3+ were quantitatively analyzed based on a spectral overlap method. As mentioned above, Ho3+/Yb3+/Ce3+ tri-doped bismuth-tellurite glasses are potentially competitive and applicable in the field of 2 μm band infrared fiber lasers as a kind of novel laser glass.

Abstract:Despite significant advancements in the field of mid-infrared lasers, the fluorescence around the 2–4 μm wavelength range remains a pressing concern. Ho 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped TeO 2 –ZnO–Nb 2 O 5 –PbO (TZNP) glasses were fabricated by conventional melt-quenching technique, and we also characterized their excellent mid-infrared (MIR) fluorescence properties. According to the observed parameter ΔT (144–141 °C) > 120 °C from differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) curves, the manufactured tellurite glass specimens displayed enhanced thermal stability and crystallization resistance. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) images demonstrated the non-crystalline structure of the produced specimens. Ho 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped tellurite glass specimens achieved emission enhancements of 2.0 μm and 4.1 μm through energy absorption of 980 nm LD, which could be assigned to the Ho 3+ : 5 I 7 → 5 I 8 and Ho 3+ : 5 F 5 → 5 I 4 radiation transition processes respectively. Meanwhile, intense 3.1 μm fluorescence was observed, which could be attributed to the transition of Er 3+ : 4 S 3/2 → 4 F 9/2 . We investigated the fluorescence properties of the produced glasses in detail, and the processes of energy transferring between Ho 3+ /Er 3+ were discussed on the basis of the quenching and increasing emission intensity at different dopant proportions of Er 3+ ions. Additionally, the optimized 1 mol% Ho 3+ and 1.5 mol% Er 3+ co-doped TZNP glass possessed the strongest emission intensity, and the fluorescence lifetime values of this sample were calculated to be 1.81 ms and 1.38 ms at 2.0 μm and 4.1 μm, respectively. The gain coefficients demonstrated that only small pump energy can achieve the MIR laser gains. These above findings suggest that the prepared samples are potentially competitive and efficient as an innovative glass in the MIR laser design and optical amplifiers applications.

Abstract:Enhanced 2.0m and visible up-conversion emissions from Ho3+ via Yb3+ sensitization in lead silicate glasses have been obtained under the excitation of 980-nm laser diode. The possible energy transfer mechanism has been analyzed based on the photoemission spectroscopy and lifetime measurement. The lifetime of Ho3+: I-5(7) laser upper level has also been measured. Based on the absorption spectra, Judd-Ofelt parameters, spontaneous emission probability, the absorption, emission cross sections, and gain coefficients have been calculated and analyzed. The results indicate that the Yb3+/Ho3+ co-doped lead silicate glass has potential application in mid-infrared wavelengths.

Abstract:Ce3+ induced enhancement of Ho3+ ~2.0μm emission in Yb3+/Ho3+ codoped sodium–zinc–tellurite (TNZ) glass was achieved under 980nm LD laser excitation. The spectroscopic studies show that the upconversion is remarkably reduced by the presence of Ce3+. The ~2.0μm fluorescence intensity is nearly triply enhanced, and the energy transfer efficiency from Yb3+ to Ho3+ is improved from 16.1% to 42.6% by increasing the Ce3+ concentration from 0 to 0.8mol%. The mechanism responsible for the upconversion reduction and ~2.0μm emission enhancement in Yb3+/Ho3+/Ce3+ triply-doped TNZ glass is also discussed. Our results indicate that the Yb3+/Ho3+/Ce3+ triply-doped TNZ glass is a promising candidate material for improving the Ho3+ 2.0μm fiber laser performance.
Enhanced 2.7 μm mid-infrared emission in Er3+/Ho3+ co-doped tellurite glass

Abstract:Improving the mid-infrared band luminescent intensity in oxide glass system is a serious challenge. In this work, Ho3+ ions was introduced into Er3+ doped tellurite glass, and the improved effect on 2.7 µm band fluorescence of Er3+ was investigated. It was found that when 0.5 mol% of Ho2O3 was incorporated into the tellurite glass with 0.5 mol% of Er2O3, the 2.7 µm band fluorescence intensity originating from Er3+:4I11/2 → 4I13/2 transition increased by about 39% under the excitation of 808 nm laser diode (LD). This significant enhancement was attributed to the energy transfers between Er3+ and Ho3+ ions which improved the population inversion ratio of this emission transition. Analyses of the intensity variations of visible and infrared band emissions as well as the fluorescence decay behavior of Er3+ ions with Ho3+ doped concentration demonstrated the existence of energy transfers, and the energy transfer mechanism was investigated by calculating the relevant micro-parameters to better clarify the origin of fluorescence enhancement. Additionally, Judd-Ofelt theory was applied to the absorption spectrum and the potential spectroscopic properties of Er3+ were evaluated, while DSC curves revealed the good thermal stability of the studied tellurite glass. All these indicated that Er3+/Ho3+ co-doped tellurite glass with appropriate concentrations is a promising candidate applied for 2.7 µm band optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Without introducing concentration quenching phenomenon, a few wt.% of Tb3+ and Yb3+ ions were doped into a group of easily-fiberized tellurite glasses characterized by loose polyhedron structures and rich interstitial positions. Intense green upconversion emission from Tb3+ ions centered at 539nm due to transition 5D4→7F5 was observed by direct excitation of Yb3+ ions with a laser diode at 976nm. Optimizing the concentration ratio of Tb3+/Yb3+, a tellurite glass with a composition of 80TeO2–10ZnO–10Na2O (mol%)+1.0wt.% Tb2O3+3.0wt.% Yb2O3 was found to present the highest green light intensity and therefore is especially suitable for efficient green fiber laser development.
Spectroscopic and structural characterization of barium tellurite glass fibers for mid-infrared ultra-broad tunable fiber lasers

Abstract:To meet the growing demand for mid-infrared tunable fiber lasers, the spectroscopic and structural properties of Tm3+/Ho3+ co-doped barium tellurite glass fibers are systematically evaluated by absorption, Raman, and photoluminescence spectra measurements. The density, molar volume, refractive index, and glass transition temperature are assessed in detail to fully understand their basic physical and thermal properties. Benefitting from the multiple structural sites in a barium tellurite glass system, the maximum doping concentration of Tm2O3 reaches up to 6.0 wt.% without inducing any crystallization or phase separation. Such a high ion concentration is conducive to reducing the fiber length and obtaining an efficient laser output. Furthermore, an intense similar to 2.0 mu m ultra-broad emission with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 382 nm is achieved in the Tm3+/Ho3+ co-doped sample upon excitation at 808 nm by properly adjusting Tm3+ concentration and fiber length. The larger emission crosssections and higher gain coefficients along with excellent thermal stability indicate that this barium tellurite glass could be an attractive gain medium for mid-infrared ultra-broad tunable fiber lasers. Abstract:We report on 2.0-μm emission characteristic and energy transfer of Ho 3+ -doped tellurite glass sensitized by Tm 3+ upon excitation of a conventional 808 nm laser diode. The Judd-Ofelt strength parameters, spontaneous radiative transition probabilities and radiative lifetime of Ho 3+ have been calculated from the absorption spectra by using the Judd-Ofelt theory. Significant enhancement of 2.0-μm emission of Ho 3+ has been observed with increasing Tm 3+ doping up to 0.7 mol%. The energy transfer coefficient of the forward Tm 3+ →Ho 3+ is approximately 17 times larger than that of the backward Tm 3+ ←Ho 3+ energy transfer. Our result indicates that the maximum gain of 2.0-μm emission, assigned to the transition of 5 I 7 → 5 I 8 of Ho 3+ , might be achieved from the tellurite glass at the concentration of 0.5 mol% of Tm 2 O 3 and 0.15 mol% of Ho 2 O 3 . The high gain coefficient and quantum efficiency (1.16) along with the large value of the product of the stimulated emission cross-section and the measured radiative lifetime (4.12×10 −27 m 2 s) of the Ho 3+ /Tm 3+ -codoped tellurite glasses might find potential applications in efficient 2.0-μm laser.

Abstract:Intense infrared emissions at 1.20μm (Ho3+: 5I6→5I8 transition) and 2.0μm (Ho3+: 5I7→5I8 transition) wavelengths from holmium–ytterbium (Ho3+–Yb3+) codoped low-phonon-energy germanotellurite glasses and fibers were observed. In comparison to Ho3+-singly doped glass, the incorporation of Yb3+ as sensitizer increases the quantum efficiency of the 1.20μm wavelength emission from 2.4% to 7.9% through efficient energy transfer from Yb3+(2F5/2) to Ho3+(5I6). Emission of 1.38μm originating from the Ho3+: (5F4,5S2)→5I5 transition was also recorded under 488nm excitation. The observation of both 1.20 and 1.38μm wavelength emissions is primarily due to the low phonon energy of the germanotellurite glasses and is 770cm−1 in accordance to the Raman spectrum. Excellent gain performance is predicted by the long lifetime and the large stimulated emission cross-section. The results suggest that low-phonon-energy germanotellurite glass is a promising candidate for optical amplification at relatively unexplored 1.20 and 1.38μm wavelength regions, and lasing operation at the eye-safe 2.0μm wavelength region.
Efficient 2075-nm laser emission from Ho3+-doped fluorotellurite glass in a compact all-fiber structure

Abstract:In this Letter, we report an Ho3+-doped fluorotellurite glass all-fiber laser at 2075 nm. The gain fiber is pumped in-band with a 1976-nm fiber laser and connected by fusion splicing. A high-quality fusion splicing point with a loss of < 0.1 dB was obtained by finely adjusting the splicing power and offset. In addition, by optimizing the writing parameters, a third-order fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a reflectivity of 98% was achieved at 2075 nm using the femtosecond laser direct-writing method. Using the FBG as the laser cavity mirror and a relatively short 28-cm-long home-made Ho3+-doped fluorotellurite fiber as the laser medium, a laser with a maximum unsaturated output power of 7.33 W was obtained, and the corresponding slope efficiency was as high as 93.4%. The first, to the best of our knowledge, demonstration of the fluorotellurite glass all-fiber ∼2.1-µm laser presented in this work may pave the way for a high-power 2.1-µm fiber laser with a compact structure.
Broadband 2.7 μm amplified spontaneous emission of Er 3+ doped tellurite fibers for mid-infrared laser applications

Abstract:Er3+ doped tellurite fibers have been fabricated using a convenient suction technique. Different scanning calorimetry (DSC), Electro-probe micro-analyzer (EPMA), Raman, steady and dynamic luminescence spectra were performed to investigate their thermal, structure, and luminescent properties. Broadband 2.7 mu m amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) emission with concurrent 1.5 mu m and visible up-conversion emissions have been achieved in fibers with various lengths upon the excitation of 980 nm laser diode (LD). A quantitative study of the spectroscopic properties has been further analyzed in detail according to the Jude-Ofelt model, rate equation, and Dexter's theory to evaluate the competitive relationship among them. The desirable spectroscopic characteristics associated with excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties indicate that the Er3+ doped tellurite fibers are excellent host matrices for 2.7 mu m lasing and may provide applications in mid-infrared fiber lasers and amplifiers. Abstract:Enhanced 1.8μm emission from Tm3+ by Yb3+ sensitization and bubbling in tungsten tellurite glasses has been demonstrated under the excitation of a 976nm laser diode. Radiative properties such as spontaneous emission probabilities, radiative lifetimes and fluorescence branching ratios along with absorption and emission cross sections have been calculated from the absorption spectra. The influences of Yb3+ concentration, Tm3+ concentration, and bubbling time on spectroscopic properties have been thoroughly investigated. It is found that with increasing the bubbling time to 35min, OH− content deceases sharply while 1.8μm emission intensity improves greatly and 3F4 level lifetime prolongs to 1.57ms close to radiative time. After 35min, they change very little due to almost reaching the dynamic balance. The strength of interaction between Tm3+ and OH− is determined. The energy transfer mechanism between Yb3+ and Tm3+ is proposed by photoemission spectroscopy and lifetime measurement. The energy transfer coefficients have been analyzed by the extended spectral overlap method and hopping model. Large ratio of the forward energy transfer from Yb3+ to Tm3+ to the backward one (223) and high energy transfer efficiency (97%) from Yb3+ to Tm3+ ensure efficient 1.8μm emission. Hence, Yb3+ sensitization and the reduction of OH− content could be expected to open up a possibility to achieve high efficient 2.0μm lasing from Tm3+ under a 976nm LD pump.

Abstract:Enhanced 2.0 mu m emission from Ho3+ bridged by Yb3+ in Nd3+/Yb3+/Ho3+ triply doped tungsten tellurite glasses has been demonstrated upon excitation with an 808 nm laser diode. Nd3+ with high absorption cross section near 808 nm plays an important role in 2.0 mu m emission by transferring pump energy to Ho3+:I-5(5) level. The introduction of Yb3+ could greatly enhance the 2.0 mu m emission. The energy transfer efficiency from Nd3+ to Ho3+ and Yb3+ increases from 36.4% to 89.5% with the addition of 5mol. % Yb2O3, and the energy transfer coefficient from Nd3+ to Yb3+ (29.65 x 10(-40) cm(6)/s) is larger than that from Nd3+ to Ho3+ (3.87 x 10(-40) cm(6)/s). The underlying mechanism is analyzed by means of photoemission spectroscopy and lifetime measurement. The combination of Nd3+/Yb3+/Ho3+ could open up a possibility to realize high efficient 2.0 mu m lasing from Ho3+, which could operate at an 808 nm diode laser pump. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
Er3+/Yb3+ Co-Doped Fluorotellurite Glass Fiber with Broadband Luminescence

Abstract:In order to address the 'capacity crisis' caused by the narrow bandwidth of the current C band and the demand for wide-spectrum sensing sources and tunable fiber lasers, a broadband luminescence covering the C + L bands using Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped fluorotellurite glass fiber is investigated in this paper. The optimal doping concentrations in the glass host were determined based on the intensity, lifetime, and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the fluorescence centered at 1.5 µm, which were found to be 1.5 mol% Er2O3 and 3 mol% Yb2O3. We also systematically investigated this in terms of optical absorption spectra, absorption and emission cross-sections, gain coefficients, Judd-Ofelt parameters, and up-conversion fluorescence. The energy transfer (ET) mechanism between the high concentrations of Er3+ and Yb3+ was summarized. In addition, a step-indexed fiber was prepared based on these fluorotellurite glasses, and a wide bandwidth of ~112.5 nm (covering the C + L bands from 1505.1 to 1617.6 nm) at 3 dB for the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) spectra has been observed at a fiber length of 0.57 m, which is the widest bandwidth among all the reports based on tellurite glass. Therefore, this kind of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped fluorotellurite glass fiber has great potential for developing broadband C + L band amplifiers, ultra-wide fiber sources for sensing, and tunable fiber lasers.

Abstract:Tellurite glasses doped with trivalent Pr3+, Nd3+ and Yb3+ ions were prepared using conventional high-temperature melt-quenching technique and their optical absorption, near-infrared emission, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrum, and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) curve were measured. Upon excitation at 488 nm, an ultra-broadband near-infrared emission extending from 800 to 1120 nm was found to appear owing to the overlapping of the emission bands centered at 900 and 1035 nm of Pr3+, 880 and 1060 nm of Nd3+ as well as 978 nm of Yb3+, respectively. The energy transfer mechanism among Pr3+, Nd3+ and Yb3+ ions which was responsible for the observed ultra-broadband near-infrared emission was investigated to understand the luminescent phenomena. In addition, Judd-Ofelt theory was applied to predict the radiative properties of doped rare-earth ions, and some important radiative parameters such as radiative transition probability, branching ratio and radiative lifetime were derived. Meanwhile, the structural information of amorphous nature and vibrational units was revealed by the XRD pattern and Raman spectrum. Also, the DSC curve displayed the good thermal stability to resist thermal damage for studied tellurite glass with high glass transition temperature. The results indicate that Pr3+/Nd3+/Yb3+ tri-doped tellurite glass is a promising material for ultra-broadband fiber lasers operating around 1.0 μm near-infrared band.

Abstract:Pr3+/Er3+ co-doped tellurite glass with composition 80TeO2-10Na2O-5WO3-5Nb2O5 was synthesized by the conventional melt-quenching technique, and the obtained glass was characterized by the UV/Vis/NIR absorption spectrum, near-infrared fluorescence spectrum, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) curve, X-Ray diffraction (XRD) pattern and Raman spectrum. Under the 488nm excitation, it was found that Pr3+/Er3+ co-doped tellurite glass could emit an ultra-broadband near-infrared fluorescence which extended from 1200 to 1650nm with full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of about 236nm, and this ultra-broadband fluorescence was contributed by the multichannel emissions of Pr3+ and 1.53µm band emission of Er3+. The luminescent mechanism and energy transfer processes between Pr3+ and Er3+ ions which are responsible for the observed ultra-broadband fluorescence were analyzed. Meanwhile, optical absorption bands that are assigned with corresponding electronic transitions with respect to Pr3+ and Er3+ ions were identified from the measured absorption spectrum, and based on the optical absorption data, the gain coefficient and important spectroscopic parameters like Judd-Ofelt intensity parameter, spontaneous radiative transition probability, radiative lifetime and branching ratio were calculated to elucidate the radiative properties of doped rare-earth ions. In addition, the DSC curve exhibited the good thermal stability of glass host with Δ T >150°C, Raman spectral study displayed the presence of different vibrational groups and XRD pattern confirmed the amorphous structural nature of the prepared glass. The present results indicate that Pr3+/Er3+ co-doped tellurite glass is promising for the ultra-broadband near-infrared band fiber amplifiers covering the expanded low-loss communication window.

Abstract:Rare-earth (RE) ions doped laser glass has attracted the interest of many researchers because of its numerous potential applications in planar waveguides and fiber lasers. In this work, the 2-µm and upconversion luminescence properties of Ho3+ are simultaneously enhanced through the design of components used to regulate the network structure of the germanate glass. Furthermore, the thermal, structural, and spectroscopic properties of the Ho3+/Yb3+ co-doped germanate laser glass are systematically investigated. It is noted that the calculated gain coefficient of the Nb2O5 modified germanate laser glass can reach as high as 3.05 cm-1 at 2047 nm. These results suggest that the prepared germanate laser glass with superior performances is a promising candidate for 2-µm mid-infrared laser materials applications.

Abstract:Broadband emissions at around 1.20 and 1.46 mu m wavelengths from thulium (Tm3+)-doped tellurite glasses were observed under 465 nm wavelength excitation. The 1.20 mu m emission originates from the Tm3+: (1)G(4) -> H-3(4) transition, and the associated stimulated peak emission cross-section is calculated to be 0.47 x 10(-20) cm(2). Population inversion occurs between the (1)G(4) and H-3(4) levels, and a positive gain band from 1.20 to 1.28 mu m is achieved at relatively low Tm3+ dopant concentration. Our results suggest that this glass system is promising for optical fiber amplifiers operating at the relatively unexplored low loss 1.20 mu m wavelength region. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Er3+ doped tellurite fibers have been fabricated using a convenient suction technique. Different scanning calorimetry (DSC), Electro-probe micro-analyzer (EPMA), Raman, steady and dynamic luminescence spectra were performed to investigate their thermal, structure, and luminescent properties. Broadband 2.7 μm amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) emission with concurrent 1.5 μm and visible up-conversion emissions have been achieved in fibers with various lengths upon the excitation of 980 nm laser diode (LD). A quantitative study of the spectroscopic properties has been further analyzed in detail according to the Jude-Ofelt model, rate equation, and Dexter’s theory to evaluate the competitive relationship among them. The desirable spectroscopic characteristics associated with excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties indicate that the Er3+ doped tellurite fibers are excellent host matrices for 2.7 μm lasing and may provide applications in mid-infrared fiber lasers and amplifiers.
