Abstract:Catalytic reactions are associated with dynamical changes in the catalyst that include the oxidation state and local structural variations. The understanding of such dynamics, particularly at the atomic-scale, is of great importance for revealing the activity and selectivity of the catalyst in numerous reactions. Combining in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy with in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, we studied the redox-induced dynamical changes for a VOX monolayer catalyst supported on a alpha-Fe2O3 powder. The results show that several co-existing VOX species reversibly change their V oxidation states between +5 and +4, in concurrence with a structural change from two-dimensional chains to well connected V-O-V networks. These changes are also associated with the breaking and formation of the V = O vanadyl group. This combined study provides new insight into how VOX species change during catalytic reactions, which leads to proposed atomic-scale models for the redox-induced dynamics of the catalyst.
Redox-driven atomic-scale changes in mixed catalysts: VOX/WOX/alpha-TiO2 (110)

Abstract:X-ray studies of vanadium-tungsten mixed-monolayer-oxide catalysts grown on the rutile alpha-TiO2 (110) single crystal surface show redox behavior not observed for lone supported vanadium or tungsten oxides. Two cases are presented: sub-monolayer (sub-ML) vanadium oxide (vanadia) grown on ML tungsten oxide and ML vanadia grown on sub-ML tungsten oxide. The X-ray standing wave (XSW) and Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) observations for both cases show coverage-dependent reversible redox-induced atomic-scale structural and chemical state changes. Atomic force microscopy shows that the mixed VOX/WOX overlayers have a conformal film-like structure in the as-deposited state. XSW analysis in light of XPS reveals that the V and W cations that are uncorrelated with the substrate lattice play an important role in catalytic redox reactions. Distinct differences in the redox-induced changes for these two mixed catalysts result from tuning the ratio of V to W, and relationships are drawn between the catalyst composition, structure, and chemistry. Comparison of these V-W mixed cases and the corresponding unmixed cases reveals a synergistic effect in which the reduction of W can be significantly enhanced by the addition of V.
Synchrotron Radiation in Situ X-ray Absorption Fine Structure and in Situ X-ray Diffraction Analysis of a High-Performance Cobalt Catalyst Towards the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Transition metal-based composites are one of the most important electrocatalysts because of their rich redox chemistry. The reaction kinetics of a redox couple is dependent on the chemical valence and is a key issue in electrocatalytic performance. In this study, a metallic Co catalyst was synthesized by pyrolyzing Co(OH)(2). The effect of the chemical valence of Co on the oxygen reduction reaction ( ORR) was investigated by comparing the electrocatalytic properties of three Co-based catalysts containing Co-0, Co2+, and Co3+. The electrocatalytic properties were evaluated mainly by linear scan voltammetry (LSV) and a direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) where the Co-based catalysts were used as cathodes. The LSV results show that the ORR peak current density increases with a decrease in chemical valence. The DBFC with the Co-0 cathode exhibits highest power density and good durability. In situ X-ray diffraction combined with in situ X-ray absorption fine structure tests was carried out to reveal the dynamic microstructure evolution of the Co-0 cathode during ORR. The in situ results clearly demonstrate the evolution of metallic Co to Co(OH) (2) and then to CoOOH during the ORR.
Oxidation-induced Structural Transition of Two-Dimensional Iron Oxide on Au(111)

Abstract:Understanding the dynamic changes of catalytically active nanostructures (NSs) under reaction conditions is a pivotal challenge in catalysis research, which has been intensively studied on metal catalysts, but less on oxide NSs. Here, we synthesized two-dimensional (2D) FeO NSs and thin films on Au(111) and studied their oxidation process in O2 from ultrahigh vacuum to near-ambient-pressure (NAP) conditions, using the combination of in-situ NAP scanning tunneling microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Our studies revealed atomic details on the transition process from the FeO bilayer to the FeO2 tri-layer on Au(111). Further, we found FeO2 NSs and thin layers are metastable on Au(111) and would undergo a three-dimensional phase change upon further thermal treatments. Our study has thus provided insight on the structural dynamics of 2D iron oxide under reaction conditions and enabled further understanding on the design of the oxide-metal interface.
Reversible structural transformation of FeOx nanostructures on Pt under cycling redox conditions and its effect on oxidation catalysis

Abstract:Understanding dynamic changes of catalytically active nanostructures under reaction conditions is a pivotal challenge in catalysis research, which has been extensively addressed in metal nanoparticles but is less explored in supported oxide nanocatalysts. Here, structural changes of iron oxide (FeOx) nanostructures supported on Pt in a gaseous environment were examined by scanning tunneling microscopy, ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy using both model systems and real catalysts. O-Fe (FeO) bilayer nanostructures can be stabilized on Pt surfaces in reductive environments such as vacuum conditions and H-2-rich reaction gas, which are highly active for low temperature CO oxidation. In contrast, exposure to H-2-free oxidative gases produces a less active O-Fe-O (FeO2) trilayer structure. Reversible transformation between the FeO bilayer and FeO2 trilayer structures can be achieved under alternating reduction and oxidation conditions, leading to oscillation in the catalytic oxidation performance.
Investigation of the Structure and Active Sites of TiO2 Nanorod Supported VOx Catalysts by High-Field and Fast-Spinning 51V MAS NMR

Abstract:Supported VOx/TiO2-rod catalysts were studied by V-51 MAS NMR at high field using a sample spinning rate of 55 kHz. The superior spectral resolution allows for the observation of at least five vanadate species. The assignment of these vanadate species was carried out by quantum chemical calculations of V-51 NMR chemical shifts of model V surface structures. Methanol oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) was used to establish a correlation between catalytic activity and the various surface V sites. It is found that monomeric V species are predominant at low vanadium loadings with two V-51 NMR peaks observed at about -502 and -529 ppm. V dimers with two bridged oxygens result in a peak at about -555 ppm. Vanadate dimers and polyvanadates connected by one bridged oxygen atom between two adjacent V atoms resonate at about -630 ppm. A positive correlation is found between the V dimers, giving rise to the -555 ppm peak, and the ODH rate, and an even better correlation is obtained by including V monomer contributions. This result suggests that surface V dimers related to the -555 ppm peak and monomers are the primary active sites for the methanol ODH reaction. Furthermore, a portion of the V species is found to be invisible to NMR and the level of such invisibility increases with decreasing V loading levels, suggesting the existence of paramagnetic V species at the surface. These paramagnetic V species are also found to be much less active in methanol ODH.

Abstract:Monolayer vanadium oxide films grown on Pt(111) supports can be reversibly switched between an oxygen‐poor and an oxygen‐rich composition, equivalent to V2O3 and V2O4.5, respectively. While the overall oxygen storage capacity of the film is quantified by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the atomic‐scale binding sites of the excess O species are determined by low‐temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and electron diffraction. In the O‐poor phase, the oxide takes the form of a honeycomb lattice that gets partially covered with vanadyl (V=O) groups at higher O exposure. Upon transition to the O‐rich phase, isolated V6O12 rings emerge first in the film, which then evolves gradually towards a disordered O‐V‐O trilayer on the Pt(111) surface. Our works thus unravels the microscopic nature of reversible oxygen storage in a model system for heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:The migration and oxidation of single V atom and V2 dimer on the anatase TiO2(1 0 1) surface are systematically studied based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For a single V atom, migration on the surface is almost impossible at room temperature while diffusion between surface and subsurface is easy in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditon. Without O attraction, single V atom prefers to stay at subsurface interstitial sites. But in oxygen condition, the subsurface interstitial V atom will easily diffuse to the surface and be oxidized into VOn (n = 1–3) monomers. The V2 dimer is dynamically stable on the TiO2(1 0 1) surface and favors to be embedded in the surface layer in UHV condition. However, it can be easily decomposed and oxidized into VOn monomers in the condition of O2. Our results offer an deep insight for the formation mechanism of sublayer vadanium oxides on TiO2 support, and will be instructive for synthesizing desired VOx/TiO2 catalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Chemical reduction in oxides plays a crucial role in engineering the material properties through structural transformation and electron filling. Controlling the reduction at nanoscale forms a promising pathway to harvest functionalities, which however is of great challenge for conventional methods (e.g., thermal treatment and chemical reaction). Here, we demonstrate a convenient pathway to achieve nanoscale chemical reduction for vanadium dioxide through the electron-beam illumination. The electron beam induces both surface oxygen desorption through radiolytic process and positively charged background through secondary electrons, which contribute cooperatively to facilitate the vacancy migration from the surface toward the sample bulk. Consequently, the VO 2 transforms into a reduced V 2 O 3 phase, which is associated with a distinct insulator to metal transition at room temperature. Furthermore, this process shows an interesting facet-dependence with the pronounced transformation observed for the c-facet VO 2 as compared with the a-facet, which is attributed to the intrinsically different oxygen vacancy formation energy between these facets. Remarkably, we readily achieve a lateral resolution of tens nanometer for the controlled structural transformation with a commercial scanning electron microscope. This work provides a feasible strategy to manipulate the nanoscale chemical reduction in complex oxides for exploiting functionalities.

Fluxional Behavior at the Atomic Level and its Impact on Activity: CO Oxidation over CeO$_{2}$-supported Pt Catalysts

Abstract:Reducible oxides are widely used catalyst supports that can increase oxidation reaction rates by transferring their lattice oxygen at the metal-support interface. The interfacial oxidation process is typically described in terms of a Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. However, many outstanding questions remain unanswered regarding the atomic-scale structure and dynamic meta-stability (i.e., fluxional behavior) of the interface $\textit{during catalysis}$. Here, we employ aberration-corrected $\textit{operando}$ electron microscopy to visualize the structural dynamics occurring at and near Pt/CeO$_{2}$ interfaces during CO oxidation. Finite element simulations are performed to develop a reaction rate analysis wherein the atomic-level structural observations are directly correlated with the catalyst's turnover frequency for CO oxidation. We show that the increasing frequency of catalytic turnover correlates with dynamic fluxional behavior that (a) destablizes the supported Pt particle, (b) marks an enhanced rate of oxygen vacancy creation and annihilation, and (c) leads to increased strain and reduction in the surface of the CeO$_{2}$ support. Overall, the results implicate the interfacial Pt-O-Ce bonds anchoring the Pt to the support as being involved also in the catalytically-driven oxygen transfer process, and they suggest that oxygen reduction takes place on the highly reduced nearby CeO2 surface before migrating to the interfacial perimeter for reaction with CO. The $\textit{operando}$ electron microscopy approach described here should be applicable to a large number of nanoparticle catalysts. This technique will enable the identification of catalytically functional surface structures and strengthen our ability to establish (dynamic) structure-activity relationships.
Dynamic Structural Changes of Iron Oxide Nanostructures on Cu(111)

Abstract:Understanding the structural dynamics of supported iron oxide nanostructures (NSs) and their interfaces with metals is essential for the rational design of iron-oxide-based catalysts for a number of major catalytic reactions. In this study, we have constructed well-defined FeO NSs on Cu(111) to study their surface structures and dynamic changes during the redox treatments using the combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As deposited FeO NSs were found to exhibit various orientations on Cu(111) with the presence of multilayer FeOx, dislocation, and defect lines on the surface plane of FeO. The oxidation of the FeO/Cu(111) surface in O-2 was facilitated by the presence of FeO NSs, causing the formation of the stripe phase of Cu2O1+x surrounding FeO. Meanwhile, the oxidation of FeO NSs also led to the formation of FeOx clusters with predominantly Fe3+ species, which were transformed into 3D FeOx nanoparticles (NPs) upon the annealing at 800 K in UHV while no reduction of Fe3+ species was obvious from XPS. Overall, an irreversible structural dynamics was observed at the atomic level for FeO NSs on Cu(111) during the redox treatments, which furthered our understanding of the FeO-Cu interface.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed single-atom catalysts are among the most attractive electrocatalysts for the CO2 reduction reaction (CRR). To elucidate the origin of the exceptional activity of atomically dispersed Fe-N-C catalyst in CRR, we have performed operando Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopic studies on a model single-Fe-atom catalyst with a well-defined N coordination environment. Combining with operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the in situ-generated four pyrrolic nitrogen atom-coordinated low-spin Fe(I) (LS FeIN4) featuring monovalent iron is identified as the reactive center for the conversion of CO2 to CO. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations reveal that the optimal binding strength of CO2 to the LS (FeN4)-N-I site, with strong orbital interactions between the singly occupied d(z)(2) orbital of the Fe(I) site and the singly occupied pi* orbital of [COOH] fragment, is the key factor for the excellent CRR performance.

Abstract:MXenes, a two-dimensional layered material of transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, have piqued the interest of researchers due to their unique physical and chemical properties. The crystal structure, electronic structure, stability, and catalytic activity of a new MXene-based single-atom catalyst(SAC) Fe1/TiVCO2 have been studied by first principles, showing this SAC exhibits excellent catalytic activity for CO oxidation. Research has shown that charge transfer from Fe1/TiVCO2 to adsorbed CO and O2 molecules plays an important role in molecular activation. The CO oxidation mechanisms of Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH), Eley-Rideal (ER), and the Termolecular Eley-Rieal (TER) were explored. All three reaction mechanisms are feasible at low temperatures, and the activation barrier energies for rate-limiting steps are 0.72 eV, 1.00 eV, and 0.40 eV, respectively. The results indicate that Fe1/TiVCO2 exhibits the highest activity for CO oxidation through the TER mechanism.

Abstract:Periodic density functional theory has been utilized to investigate the structure and stability of monomeric HVOx species on anatase support. The three most stable surfaces of anatase were investigated, namely the (001), (100) and (101) surfaces. Unlike previous theoretical studies it was found that on the (001) surface vanadia species with five-coordinated vanadium atom are more stable than those with tetrahedrally coordinated vanadium atom. On the other hand, on the (100) and (101) surfaces, the vanadium atom in the vanadia species is still tetrahedrally coordinated. The stability of different VOx/TiO2 structures which are not fully dehydrated has been systematically studied and the results show that the vanadia species on the three surfaces follow an order of TiO2 (001)>TiO2 (100)>TiO2 (101). This can be understood from the acidity and basicity of the three anatase surfaces. The results suggest that monomeric VOx species may be better stabilized if the support exposes more (001) surfaces. Our analyses on electronic structure of the most stable VOx/TiO2 structure (D001) suggest that its bridging V–O–Ti oxygen atoms may have higher reactivity than the terminal vanadyl oxygen atoms.
Voltage- and time-dependent valence state transition in cobalt oxide catalysts during the oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:The ability to determine the electronic structure of catalysts during electrochemical reactions is highly important for identification of the active sites and the reaction mechanism. Here we successfully applied soft X-ray spectroscopy to follow in operando the valence and spin state of the Co ions in Li2Co2O4 under oxygen evolution reaction (OER) conditions. We have observed that a substantial fraction of the Co ions undergo a voltage-dependent and time-dependent valence state transition from Co3+ to Co4+ accompanied by spontaneous delithiation, whereas the edge-shared Co-O network and spin state of the Co ions remain unchanged. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the highly oxidized Co4+ site, rather than the Co3+ site or the oxygen vacancy site, is mainly responsible for the high OER activity.
An Atomic-Scale View of CO and H2 Oxidation on a Pt-Fe3O4 Model Catalyst

Abstract:Metal-support interactions are frequently invoked to explain the enhanced catalytic activity of metal nanoparticles dispersed over reducible metal-oxide supports, yet the atomic scale mechanisms are rarely known. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to study a Pt1-6/Fe3O4 model catalyst exposed to CO, H2, O2, and mixtures thereof, at 550 K. CO extracts lattice oxygen at the cluster perimeter to form CO2, creating large holes in the metal-oxide surface. H2 and O2 dissociate on the metal clusters and spill over onto the support. The former creates create surface hydroxyl groups, which react with the support to desorb water, while atomic oxygen reacts with Fe from the bulk to create new Fe3O4(001) islands. The presence of the Pt is crucial because it catalyses reactions that already occur on the bare iron-oxide surface, but at higher temperatures.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic activity of the electrode materials towards the vanadium redox couples is a major factor in determining the performance of vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). The high intrinsic catalytic activity of the atomic Fe sites, the superior surface hydrophilicity, along with the enhanced mass transfer efficiency and exposure of active sites benefited from the porous structure, endow the Fe1-PGF electrode with improved electrochemical performance compared to metal-free PGF counterpart and commercial graphite felt electrode. Consequently, the single-cell battery assembled with Fe1-PGF exhibits a high voltage efficiency (77.96%) and energy efficiency (70.27%) at the current density of 60 mA cm−2 as well as lower overpotential and higher rate capability compared to the control samples. This study demonstrates that single atom catalysts (SACs) are promising candidates for catalyzing the vanadium redox couples in VRFBs and motivates the exploration of SACs in other types of redox flow batteries.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed single-atom catalysts are among the most attractive electrocatalysts for the CO2 reduction reaction (CRR). To elucidate the origin of the exceptional activity of atomically dispersed Fe–N–C catalyst in CRR, we have performed operando 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopic studies on a model single-Fe-atom catalyst with a well-defined N coordination environment. Combining with operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the in situ-generated four pyrrolic nitrogen atom-coordinated low-spin Fe(I) (LS FeIN4) featuring monovalent iron is identified as the reactive center for the conversion of CO2 to CO.
