Abstract:Ceria-supported vanadium oxides have been found to be extremely active in selective oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) reactions. In this work, we systematically studied the structures and especially the origin for the unique activity of VOx/CeO2. We found that the activity of VOx/CeO2 is closely related to the hydrogen adsorption energy, which is largely controlled by the electronic effect. Specifically, some monomeric VOx species can modify the electronic structure of the supporting ceria. The structural effect was found to be able to influence the activity as well. These results may help us to understand the unique catalytic activity of vanadia/ceria.
Strong Local Coordination Structure Effects on Subnanometer PtOx Clusters over CeO2 Nanowires Probed by Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.

Abstract:Vanadia/ceria supported catalysts exhibit ultrahigh catalytic activities in oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) reactions. Here, we performed systematic density functional theory calculations to illustrate the underlying mechanisms. It is found that unique electronic and structural effects are both crucial in the catalytic processes. Calculations of the catalytic performance of different oxygen species in oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde suggested that the oxygen of the interface V-O-Ce group is catalytically more active, especially when H adsorption energy is small, indicating the strong structural effect in the vanadia/ceria supported catalyst. In addition, new empty localized states of O 2p generated in a ceria-supported system through depositing VO3- and VO4-type monomeric vanadia species are determined to participate in the whole ODH reaction processes and help to reduce the barriers at various steps.
Periodic Density Functional Theory Studies of the VOx/TiO2 (anatase) Catalysts: Structure and Stability of Monomeric Species

Abstract:Periodic density functional theory has been utilized to investigate the structure and stability of monomeric HVOx species on anatase support. The three most stable surfaces of anatase were investigated, namely the (001), (100) and (101) surfaces. Unlike previous theoretical studies it was found that on the (001) surface vanadia species with five-coordinated vanadium atom are more stable than those with tetrahedrally coordinated vanadium atom. On the other hand, on the (100) and (101) surfaces, the vanadium atom in the vanadia species is still tetrahedrally coordinated. The stability of different VOx/TiO2 structures which are not fully dehydrated has been systematically studied and the results show that the vanadia species on the three surfaces follow an order of TiO2 (001)>TiO2 (100)>TiO2 (101). This can be understood from the acidity and basicity of the three anatase surfaces. The results suggest that monomeric VOx species may be better stabilized if the support exposes more (001) surfaces. Our analyses on electronic structure of the most stable VOx/TiO2 structure (D001) suggest that its bridging V–O–Ti oxygen atoms may have higher reactivity than the terminal vanadyl oxygen atoms.
Relating Methanol Oxidation to the Structure of Ceria-Supported Vanadia Monolayer Catalysts

Abstract:Vanadia "monolayer"-type catalysts supported on reducible oxides such as ceria previously have shown high activity for the selective oxidation of alcohols. Here, a model system consisting of vanadia particles deposited on well-ordered CeO2(1 1 1) thin films has been employed. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) were used to characterize the VOx/CeO2 surface as a function of vanadia loading. The formation of isolated monomeric species as well as two-dimensional vanadia islands that wet the ceria support was directly observed by STM. The vanadia species exhibit V in a +5 oxidation state and expose vanadyl (V=O) groups with stretching vibrations that blue-shift from similar to 1005 cm(-1) to similar to 1040 cm(-1) with increasing coverage. Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) of methanol revealed three peaks for formaldehyde production. One is correlated with reactivity on the ceria support (565-590 K). Another is correlated with reactivity on large vanadia particles (475-505 K) similar to that previously observed on vanadia/silica and vanadia/alumina model systems. A low temperature reaction pathway (similar to 370 K) is observed at low coverage, which is assigned to the reactivity of isolated vanadia species surrounded by a reduced ceria surface. It is concluded that strong support effects reported in the literature for the real catalysts are likely related to the stabilization of small vanadia clusters by reducible oxide supports. Abstract:Ceria-supported monomeric vanadia (VO x /CeO 2 ) catalysts show outstanding activity in oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) in the CO 2 atmosphere. This work reports the density functional theory calculations exploring the reduction and reoxidation mechanisms in the Mars-van-Krevelen cycle for the ODH over VO x /CeO 2 (111). Intriguingly, a new phenomenon was observed in the reduction of VO 2 /CeO 2 (111), the H species generated by C-H bond activation on the VO x cluster could spill over to CeO 2 with a minimum barrier, enabling the reduction to occur at CeO 2 substrate. Subsequently, the formed H 2 O releases and causes a structure evolution, resulting in VO 2 /CeO 2 (111) reduction to VO/CeO 2 (111). However, this H spillover is hard to be detected at the interface of VO/CeO 2 (111), VO x /TiO 2 (101), and VO x /α-Al 2 O 3 (001) due to a higher barrier, indicating that the H spillover is related to the electron acceptability of substrate and the structure of VO x cluster. Moreover, O spillover from CeO 2 is noticed at the interface of VO x /CeO 2 (111) in the reoxidation process, causing the V oxidation to VO. However, VO reoxidation to VO 2 is thermodynamically and dynamically unfavorable. Therefore, the structure VO/CeO 2 (111) seems to be conserved in the steady-state reaction process. This paper would provide key insights for understanding the structure evolution of catalysts in the ODH.

Bridging the Structural Gap of Supported Vanadium Oxides for Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane with Carbon Dioxide

Abstract:As an extensively used industrial catalyst for oxidation reactions, supported vanadium oxide (VOx) is a promising candidate for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with carbon dioxide (CO2-ODP). Although the structure of VOx is found to be a key factor in determining the catalytic activity and stability of supported VOx for CO2-ODP, the essential reason still remains elusive at the molecular level. To shed some light on this fundamental issue, VOx/(−)SiO2 catalysts with narrow distributions of V loading while well-defined structures of VOx species, i.e., monomeric VOx, less polymeric VOx, highly polymeric VOx and V2O5 crystallites, were purposely synthesized by appropriate methods, including one-pot hydrothermal synthesis, incipient wetness impregnation and physical grinding. We found that the catalytic activity and stability of VOx species decrease in the order of monomeric VOx > less polymeric VOx > highly polymeric VOx > crystalline V2O5, which coincides with the ability for the re-oxidation of the correspondingly reduced VOx species by CO2. As a result of the most facile re-oxidation of the reduced monomeric VOx species by CO2, a well matched redox cycle of V5+/V4+ oxides during CO2-ODP can be maintained with increasing the time on stream, leading to an improved stability of the catalyst with more monomeric VOx. These mechanistic findings on the redox properties of VOx with different structures can be guidelines for developing a high-performance VOx-based catalyst for CO2-ODP.
Effects of CeO2 support facets on VOx/CeO2 catalysts in oxidative dehydrogenation of methanol

Abstract:CeO2 supports with dominating facets, i.e., low index (100), (110) and (111) facets, are prepared. The facet effects on the structure and catalytic performance of supported vanadium oxide catalysts are investigated using oxidative dehydrogenation of methanol as a model reaction. In the presence of mixed facets, Infrared and Raman characterizations demonstrate that surface vanadia species preferentially deposit on CeO2 (100) facets, presumably because of its higher surface energy. At the same surface vanadium densities, VOx species on (100) facets show better dispersion, followed by (110) and (111) facets. The VOx species on CeO2 nanorods with (110) and (100) facets display higher activity and lower apparent activation energies compared to that on CeO2 nanopolyhedras with dominating (111) facets and CeO2 nanocubes with dominating (100) facets. The higher activity for VOx/CeO2 (110) might be related to the more abundant oxygen vacancies present on the (110) facets, evidenced from Raman spectroscopic measurements.

Abstract:Supported vanadium oxides are widely used as active catalysts for a number of oxidation and oxidative dehydrogenation reactions, and the understanding the structure-function relationship is of great importance for developing more efficient vanadium oxide catalysts. In this work, atomic layer deposition (ALD) was utilized to disperse sub-monolayer VOx over a commercial gamma-Al2O3 support. Characterization results indicate that highly dispersed VOx species with different structures were obtained by simply changing the number of ALD cycles. The vanadium oxides synthesized by performing 1 cycle of ALD were exclusively isolated monomeric VOx. With increasing the number of ALD cycles from 3 to 8, the polymeric VOx spices were formed, and the polymerization extent or domain size of VOx was increased. On the contrary, crystalline V2O5 besides polymeric VOx was found if the number of ALD cycles was extended to 12. Catalytic performances of ALD VOx/gamma-Al2O3 3 were evaluated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene with CO2 (CO2-ODEB), and the isolated monomeric VOx species were found to be more active and more stable than the polymeric VOx species and crystalline V2O5. By correlating the specific activity and the structural characteristics of ALD VOx/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts, the V-O-Al bonds were concluded as the key active sites for CO2 -ODEB. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:The information obtained from the characterization of vanadium oxide single crystal surfaces is related to the study of vanadia nanoparticles supported on silica and alumina thin films, model systems for the so-called “supported monolayer vanadia catalysts”. It is found that these particles have properties similar to V2O3 surfaces, where the topmost V ions are involved in vanadyl groups and have a 5+ oxidation state. A vibrational spectroscopy investigation combined with DFT calculations show that the accepted interpretation of vibrational spectra from vanadia catalysts must be revised.

Interfacial Effects of CeO2-Supported Pd Nanorod in Catalytic CO Oxidation: A Theoretical Study

Abstract:Understanding the interfacial effects of metal/support catalysts is of great significance in heterogeneous catalysis. In this work, we performed density functional theory calculations corrected by on-site Coulomb interactions (DFT+U) to study CO oxidation on a CeO2(111)-supported Pd nanorod. Three different reaction mechanisms for CO oxidation were systematically studied, namely the Pd-Ce3+ dual sites mechanism, the Mars-van Krevelen (M-vK) mechanism, and the Pd-only mechanism. On the basis of energetic analysis, we concluded that the dominant reaction pathway at low temperatures is the Pd-Ce3+ dual sites mechanism, whereas the M-vK mechanism would be dominant at higher temperatures. The interfacial effects play a crucial role and strongly affect the catalytic activity in these two mechanisms. The origin of the interfacial effects can be understood by analyzing the geometric and electronic properties. From the geometric perspective, the interaction between Pd nanorod and ceria support elongates the CeO bonds at the interface, enhancing the mobility and activity of interfacial lattice O atoms. From the electronic perspective, there occurs electron transfer from the Pd nanorod to the interfacial Ce4+ cation, leading to the formation of Ce3+, and subsequent electron transfer from Ce3+ to the adsorbed O-2 at the Pd-Ce3+ dual sites significantly promotes the formation of active oxygen species for CO oxidation. Our study provides atomic-scale insights into the nature of active sites and the interfacial effects that determine CO oxidation on Pd/CeO2 catalysts.
Catalytic Total Oxidation of 1,2-Dichloroethane over Highly Dispersed Vanadia Supported on CeO2 Nanobelts

Abstract:CeO2 nanobelts were synthesized via a facile aqueous-phase precipitation route under mild conditions (template-free and non-hydrothermal), and then the highly dispersed vanadia catalysts with a wide range of VOx loadings were prepared by a conventional incipient-wetness impregnation method. The target VOx/CeO2 catalysts were characterized in detail and used in catalytic combustion of 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE). The results revealed that the monolayer dispersed VOx (6.0%VOx/CeO2) exhibited the most outstanding initial and stable activities, however, the main product containing carbon was CO2 not desired CO2. A reaction mechanism of DCE total oxidation was proposed based on the study of TPSR and in situ FTIR. The first step of this mechanism was considered to be a dissociative adsorption of C-Cl bonds on Lewis acid sites (such as Ce4+/3+, V5+/4+ or Ce3+-O2--V5+) via Cl abstraction, and then the dissociated DCE can be oxidized directly to CO2 by surface active oxygen species over pure CeO2. Whereas, over VOx/CeO2 catalysts, the formation of intermediate acetaldehyde was a key step via C-H bond activation and hydrogen transfer on VOx species, subsequently, partially oxidized to CO by the lattice oxygen of VOx. Abstract:CeO2-based nanostructures have recently aroused interest for various applications because of their higher OSC and redox properties, allowing them to facilely switch between the oxidation states of Ce4+ and Ce3+. There are many studies that have been focused on the morphology-dependent catalysis and identification of the true active sites during catalysis reactions. Probing the intrinsic properties of CeO2 nanostructures, including the surface structure and reduction, oxygen vacancy, grain boundary, morphology, and dynamic structure under environmental conditions, is essential in clarifying their physical and chemical properties and expanding their potential applications. In this review, we summarize recent significant achievements in characterizing CeO2 nanostructures and related catalytic phenomena through advanced techniques. Several studies using model CeO2 catalysts have been selected to show the importance of strong metal-support interactions. A deep insight into the active sites in morphologically controllable CeO2 that exposes the highly active facets is expected to guide the design of nanocatalysts.
Redox-driven atomic-scale changes in mixed catalysts: VOX/WOX/alpha-TiO2 (110)

Abstract:X-ray studies of vanadium-tungsten mixed-monolayer-oxide catalysts grown on the rutile alpha-TiO2 (110) single crystal surface show redox behavior not observed for lone supported vanadium or tungsten oxides. Two cases are presented: sub-monolayer (sub-ML) vanadium oxide (vanadia) grown on ML tungsten oxide and ML vanadia grown on sub-ML tungsten oxide. The X-ray standing wave (XSW) and Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) observations for both cases show coverage-dependent reversible redox-induced atomic-scale structural and chemical state changes. Atomic force microscopy shows that the mixed VOX/WOX overlayers have a conformal film-like structure in the as-deposited state. XSW analysis in light of XPS reveals that the V and W cations that are uncorrelated with the substrate lattice play an important role in catalytic redox reactions. Distinct differences in the redox-induced changes for these two mixed catalysts result from tuning the ratio of V to W, and relationships are drawn between the catalyst composition, structure, and chemistry. Comparison of these V-W mixed cases and the corresponding unmixed cases reveals a synergistic effect in which the reduction of W can be significantly enhanced by the addition of V.
Fabrication of supported Pt/CeO2 nanocatalysts doped with different elements for CO oxidation: Theoretical and experimental studies

Abstract:Supported Pt/CeO2 catalysts have been widely used in carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation, however, the high oxygen vacancy formation energy (Evac) in the process leads to the poor performance of these catalysts. Herein, we explored different elements (Pr, Cu, or N) doped CeO2 supports using Ce-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors via calcination treatment. The obtained CeO2 supports were used to load Pt nanoparticles. These catalysts were systematically characterized by various techniques, and they showed superior catalytic activity for CO oxidation compared to undoped catalysts which could be attributed to the formation of Ce3+, and high amounts of Oads/(Oads+Olat) and Ptδ+/Pttotal. Moreover, density functional theory calculations with on-site Coulomb interactions correction (DFT + U) were performed to provide atomic-scale insights into the reaction process by the Mars-van Krevelen (M-vK) mechanism, which revealed that the element-doped catalysts could simultaneously reduce the adsorption energies of CO and lower reaction energy barriers in the *OOCO associative pathway.

Abstract:The oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane on monomeric VO3 supported by CeO2(111) (VO3/CeO2(111)) is studied by periodic density functional theory calculations. Detailed energetic, structural, and electronic properties of these reactions are determined. The calculated activation energies of the breaking of the first and second C–H bonds of propane on the VO3/CeO2(111) catalyst are compared, and it is found that both the unique structural and electronic effects of the VO3/CeO2(111) catalyst contribute to the relatively easy rupture of the first C–H bond of the propane molecule during the ODH reaction. In particular, the so-called new empty localized states that are mainly constituted of O 2p orbitals of the ceria-supported VO3 species are determined to be crucial for assisting the cleavage of the first C–H bond of the propane molecule. Following this they become occupied and the remaining C–H bonds become increasingly difficult to break owing to the increasing repulsion between the localized 4f electrons at the Ce cations, resulting in the adsorption of more H and other moieties. This work illustrates that CeO2-supported monomeric vanadium oxides can exhibit unique activity and selectivity for the catalytic ODH of alkanes to alkenes.

Abstract:CeO2 supported V2O5 catalysts were prepared by the wetness impregnation technique and their surface structures were characterized by O2 chemisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy (LRS). The surface acidity and basicity were measured by using microcalorimetry and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) for the adsorption of NH3 and CO2. Temperature programmed reduction (TPR) was employed for the redox properties. In particular, isopropanol probe reactions with and without the presence of O2 were employed to provide the additional information about the surface acidity and redox properties of the catalysts. Variation of loading of V2O5 and calcination temperature brought about the changes of surface structures of dispersed vanadium species, and hence the surface acidic and redox properties. Structural characterizations indicated that V2O5 can be well dispersed on the surface of CeO2. The monolayer dispersion capacity was found to be about 8V/nm2, corresponding to about 10% V2O5 by weight in a V2O5/CeO2 sample with the surface area of 80m2/g. Vanadium species in the catalysts (673K calcined) with loading lower than 10% were highly dispersed and exhibited strong surface acidity and redox ability, while higher loading resulted in the formation of significant amount of surface crystalline V2O5, which showed fairly strong surface acidity and significantly weakened redox ability. Calcination of a 10% V2O5/CeO2 at 873K resulted in the formation of mainly CeVO4 on the surface, which showed low surface acidity and redox ability. The probe reaction seemed to suggest that the calcination at higher temperature might cause the decrease of surface acidity more than redox ability. Thus, the 10% V2O5/CeO2 catalyst calcined at 873K exhibited much higher selectivity to benzaldehyde as compared to other V2O5/CeO2 catalysts studied in this work, although its activity for the conversion of toluene was relatively low.

Abstract:Ce0.5Zr0.5O2, Ce0.5Zr0.2Mn0.3O2 and Ce0.5Mn0.5O2 were prepared by citric acid sol–gel method. The effect of manganese on the structural and redox properties of ceria-based mixed oxides was investigated by means of powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analyses, temperature-programmed reduction and catalytic activity evaluation in the presence of excess O2. The results showed that some Mn cations could enter into the ceria lattice to form solid solutions. Mn3O4 appeared due to the instability of the mixed oxides with increment of the Mn doping ratio while another oxide Mn2O3 is detected in the physical mixture of ceria and manganese oxide. These Mn-doped mixed oxides, especially Ce0.5Mn0.5O2, presented better catalytic activities than Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 and even Pt-loaded catalyst for total oxidation of C3H8 and oxidative sorption of NO in the presence of excess oxygen. The oxidation ability of Mn and the strong interaction between Mn and Ce were suggested to promote the oxygen storage/transport capacity of the mixed oxides as well as reactive adsorption of nitric oxide and hydrocarbons.
Theoretical Investigations of Pt-1@Ceo2 Single-Atom Catalyst for Co Oxidation

Abstract:In the present study, we perform systematic density functional investigations on the single-atom Pt catalysts dispersed on CeO2 (111), (110), and (100) surfaces. The structural and electronic properties of these SACs and their corresponding catalytic activity for CO oxidation are discussed. It is shown that the single-atom Pt substitution of a lattice Ce ion is thermodynamically stable on each ceria surface. On the (111) and (100) surfaces, the single Pt atom is found to exist at an oxidation state of +4 upon replacement of Ce4+, while, on the (110) surface, it exhibits a planar structure with a reduced oxidation state of +2 due to the spontaneous formation of surface peroxide O(2)(2-)species. On all of the surfaces, CO oxidation is found to follow the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. It is the single-atom Pt, rather than the lattice Ce, that acts as the electron acceptor/donor in the redox processes during the whole catalytic cycle. This work provides insights on the significant role of a single metal atom on reducible oxide of ceria and others.
Structure Sensitivity of Ceria-Supported Au Catalysts for CO Oxidation

Abstract:Single-atom catalysis is at the center of the attention of the heterogeneous catalysis community. It remains a challenge to determine the thermodynamic stability of single atoms on an oxide support and compare their activity to that of small clusters and nanoparticles. We conducted density functional theory calculations to compare the stability of Au(CO) complexes on the CeO2(111) terrace and step-edge of CeO2(111) against CeO2( 111)-supported nanoparticles. The different single atom Au and Au cluster models were compared for CO oxidation at low temperature. Trapped as dopants substituting for Ce in the surface or in a ceria O vacancy, Au cannot catalyze CO oxidation. Single Au atoms at step-edges represent candidate active sites for low-temperature CO oxidation. The CO oxidation at the interface between Au nanoparticles and CeO2 can directly take place through a Mars-van Krevelen mechanism and account for a promising reactivity when the dislodgment of Au(CO) complex is hindered. The possibility of CO-induced dislodgement of a single Au atom depends critically on the topology of the Au-CeO2 interface. (c) 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
