Abstract:We present a novel scheme for ultrabroadband and omnidirectional perfect absorbers with compact multilayer film structure. Our proposed device shows an average absorption of similar to 98% over a wide range of wavelengths ranging from 400 to 2000 nm. The ultrabroadband characteristics are achieved with strongly overlapped optical resonances by designing a tandem structure composed of three absorptive materials, while the overall structure features a graded refractive index profile to obtain a wideband antireflection property. In addition to the high efficiency and ultrabroadband absorption, our perfect absorbers exhibit a great angular tolerance up to 60 degrees, which is attributed to not only relatively broad resonances but also negligible propagation phase shifts in ultrathin highly absorbing layers. Lastly, we explore the effect of the number of semiconductor-metal stacks on the performance of the absorber. The presented approach can have tremendous potential for various applications, such as solar-thermal energy harvesting, thermoelectrics, detection, and imaging.

Abstract:We propose a broadband, efficient, ultra-thin metal-insulator-metal (MIM) absorber with a simple single-sized disk configuration by utilizing metals with high imaginary part of permittivity (epsilon"). The physics behind this is that field dissipation is remarkably enhanced in MIM absorbers with high-epsilon" metals, significantly extending the absorption bandwidths, which are conventionally limited by magnetic resonances of MIM absorbers with low-epsilon" metals. The experimentally demonstrated MIM absorber based on tungsten with high-epsilon" yields broadband absorption from visible to near-infrared range (400-1700 nm) with an average measured absorption of 84%. The ultra-thin and single-sized nanostructure with broadband efficient absorption facilitates the scalability to largearea photonic applications. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:We theoretically study the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure based ultrathin broadband optical absorber which consists of a metallic substrate, a dielectric middle layer, and a nanostructured metallic top layer. It is found that, there exists an effective permittivity, εnull, for the top nanostructured metallic layer which leads to unit-absorption (zero-reflection) of the MIM structure. Importantly, this εnull exhibits abnormal dispersion behaviors. Both its real and imaginary parts increase monotonically with the wavelength. To obtain such naturally non-existing permittivity, we investigate the optical properties of two typical types of metal-dielectric nanocomposites, namely, thoroughly mingled composites using Bruggeman's effective medium theory, and more realistic Au nanosphere-in-dielectric structures using numerical permittivity retrieval techniques. We demonstrate that the εnull-type dispersions, and consequently, perfect absorption can be obtained over a broad spectral range when the filling factor of the metal component is close to the percolation threshold. The result not only explains the recently reported broadband absorbers made of randomly deposited Au nanoparticles [M. K. Hedayati, et al, Adv. Mater. 23, 5410 (2011)], but also provides theoretical guidelines for designing ultrathin broadband plasmonic absorbers for a wealthy of important applications.

Abstract:Using metal-dielectric nanocomposite materials, we developed thin-film resonant and nonresonant absorbers with tunable absorption band. A compact double-side vertically graded metal-dielectric nanocomposite absorber was fabricated by gradually varying metal-dielectric nanocomposite ratios. The optical impedance of this metal-dielectric nanocomposite structure can be engineered to realize the antireflection characteristics. A broad-band and angle-insensitive super absorption over 81% was obtained in visible to near-infrared spectral region (i.e., 400 nm to 1100 nm), which is broader than recently reported plasmonic metamaterial absorbers in the similar spectral region.

Abstract:On page 480, spatially and spectrally resolved narrowband optical absorbers are presented by Q. Li and co-workers. The devices are based on 2D grating nanostructures with spatially and spectrally resolved narrow-band absorption. The transverse magnetic lattice mode supports both large wavelength-angle sensitivity and large absorption-angle sensitivity. The absorbers can be applied in devices for spatial optical measurement techniques with significantly reduced size and weight.

Abstract:Realizing a polarization-insensitive broadband optical absorber plays a key role in the implementation of microstructure optoelectrical devices with on-demand functionalities. However, the challenge is that most of these devices involve the constituent metals, thus suffering from poor chemical and thermal stability and a complicated manufacturing process. In addition, the extreme contrast between the negative (metallic) and positive (dielectric) real parts of the constituent permittivities can cause additional problems in the design of structural devices. Based on these facts, this work proposes a design of planar broadband one-dimensional structure based on Fibonacci geometry. Experimental results show that the proposed planar structure exhibits high absorptivity behavior independent of polarization and angle in the wavelength range of 300-1000 nm. The absorptivity remains more than 80% when the incident angle is 60 degrees. This proof-of-concept represents a new strategy for realizing non-metallic broadband optical absorbers with advantages of polarization-independence, low-cost, and wide-field-of-view and paves the way for light manipulation under harsh conditions. Abstract:An ultra-narrow band absorber consisting of continuous silver and alumina films is investigated. Owing to Fabry–Pérot resonance and silver's inherent loss, an ultra-narrow spectral range of light can be entirely trapped in the structure. By varying thicknesses of metallic and dielectric films, absorption peak shifts in visible and near-infrared regions. When two such metal-insulator-metal stacks are cascaded, experimental results show that an ultra-narrow absorption bandwidth of 7 nm is achieved, though theoretical results give that of 2 nm. Features of high-efficiency and ultra-narrow band absorption have huge potential in optical filtering, thermal emitter design, etc.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a glass-based double-side cascade film stack structure for visible-infrared ultrabroadband absorption. The proposed structure demonstrates an average absorption as high as ∼95% over an ultrawide range of wavelengths from 0.4 μm to 20 μm. The high absorption feature of the different bandgap materials is applied in this absorption device to realize the ultrabroadband absorption, combining with the metal-dielectric-like configuration for those unmatched-admittance wavelengths and the graded index profile arrangement for the 0.4–2.5 μm band. The proposed ultrabroadband absorber shows a great angular tolerance up to 60° with the average absorption of 90% remaining. The proposed approach can have tremendous potential in fields of optical sensing, camouflage, optical imaging, passive cooling, and sustainable power generation, profiting from the good mechanical characteristics of this compact multilayer film structure and the low manufacture costs with the simple physical vapor deposition.

Abstract:Turning the surfaces of noble metals (metasurfaces) into black (highly absorptive) surfaces can be potentially applied in thermophotovoltaics, sensing, tailoring thermal emissivity, etc. Here we demonstrate an extremely broadband absorber for the 900-1600 nm wavelength range with robust high absorption efficiency. The inexpensive droplet evaporation method is implemented to create patterns of nanoparticles dispersed on a gold film spaced by a thin dielectric layer. The diversity of the complicated random stacking of the chemically synthesized gold nanorods is the major factor for the broad absorption band. Such a metamaterial absorber may pave the way for cost-effective manufacture of large-area black metasurfaces.

Abstract:We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a lithography-free, broadband, thin optical absorber composed of planar multilayered dielectric and metal films, which can cover the total visible wavelength range with simulated and experimental absorption efficiencies higher than 90%. Moreover, the absorption is insensitive to the polarization and angle of incidence. Such a planar device is much easier to fabricate compared with other broadband absorbers with complicated structures and may have potential applications in solar energy harvesting and controllable thermal emission.

Abstract:Ultra‐thin broadband metamaterial absorbers exhibit high absorptivity and broad bandwidths. Herein, we propose and simulate an ultra‐broadband wide‐angle polarization‐independent enhanced absorber with a metal‐insulator‐metal structure. The enhanced absorber exhibit ultra‐wideband characteristics from ultraviolet to far‐infrared range (0.35–10 μm), where it achieves an average absorption > 96%. It is insensitive to variations in the polarization state, exhibits a wide‐angle absorption because of a high degree of geometric symmetry, and shows a satisfactory absorption performance for a combination of different materials. Thus, the distinct structural characteristics of the device play a pivotal role in absorption. These advantages improve the flexibility of material selection in the design and manufacturing process of ultra‐broadband enhanced absorbers, thereby broadening their application potential in solar energy harvesting, infrared detectors, and thermal imaging. Abstract:A broadband, high‐absorption metamaterial absorber based on a metallic–dielectric disc structure is proposed, achieving over 90% absorbance in the 1500 to 4000 nm range with a bandwidth of 2500 nm. The absorber is polarization‐insensitive and capable of wide‐angle absorption, making it potentially valuable for infrared detection and imaging applications. A metamaterial absorber with broadband and high absorption based on a metal–dielectric disc–ring structure is proposed. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is used to analyze the absorption performance of the absorber. The results show that the absorption of the proposed absorber is more than 90% in the band range from 1500 to 4000 nm with an absorption bandwidth of 2500 nm. The absorber has polarization‐insensitive properties due to the high symmetry of the structure. In addition, the absorber has large angle absorption characteristics with average absorptions of 92% and 82% at an incidence angle of 60° in TM and TE modes. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR), localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) at the metal interface, and cavity resonance between the circular slits work in synergy to enhance the absorption and broaden the absorption bandwidth. The proposed absorber has a simple structure, easily accessible material, and excellent performance with potential applications in infrared detection, imaging, and other fields.

Abstract:Applications of metallic glass thin films (MGTFs) in the optical area have seldom been reported. We successfully design and fabricate a broadband and durable absorber with MGTFs. It is found that the absorber, with a total thickness of only ∼230 nm smaller than the light wavelength, exhibits excellent performance, that is, an average absorption of >90% from the visible to the near-infrared range (500-1300 nm). This is of significance for the optical application of MGTFs with the potential for large-scale fabrication using superplastic deformation in the supercooled liquid region of MGTFs.

Abstract:Metamaterial absorbers over a broadband spectrum with high absorption, good angular tolerance, and easy configurations have essential importance for optical and optoelectronic devices. In this study, a hybrid metamaterial absorber comprising multilayered cermet thin films (multi-cermet) with tapered structure is designed and experimentally demonstrated. Combining optical interference of multi-cermet films and optical field localization of nano-cone structures, the average absorbance of both simulation and measurement are more than 98% in an ultrabroad bandwidth (300–3000 nm), and the proposed absorber shows a good angular tolerance as well. The composite process of two easy-operated and efficient methods, colloidal lithography, and magnetron sputtering, is employed for large-area fabrication. In addition, owing to flexible polyimide substrate, the proposed absorber also shows good bending and heating resistance, which reflects its potential in engineering application.

Abstract:We designed a metamaterial far-infrared absorber based on an MDM (metal–dielectric–metal) structure. We made a hollow crossed Ti microstructure at the top of the absorber. It is known that the coupling effect of equipartitional exciton resonance and intrinsic absorption at the surface of the depleting material has a strong influence on the absorber. Based on this, we investigated the absorption characteristics of the absorber using the Finite Difference in Time Domain (FDTD) theory. The results show that the absorber absorbed more than 90% of the light within a bandwidth of 12.01 μm. The absorber has an average absorption of 94.08% in the longwave infrared (LWIR) to ultra-longwave infrared (UWIR) bands (10.90–22.91 μm). The polarization insensitivity of the designed absorber is demonstrated by analyzing the absorption spectra of the absorber at different polarization angles. By adjusting the relevant geometric parameters, the absorption spectrum can be independently adjusted. Furthermore, the absorber exhibits good incidence angle insensitivity in both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. The absorbers are simple and easy to configure for applications such as optical cloaking, infrared heat emitters, and photodetectors. These advantages will greatly benefit the application of absorbers in practice.

Abstract:The field of P-band (0.3–1 GHz) absorption has witnessed rapid development in metamaterial absorbers due to their exceptional designability and the absence of restrictions imposed by the one-fourth wavelength rule. In this study, we combined carbonyl iron powder (CIP) composites with a periodic structure composed of metal capacitive patterns and employed a genetic algorithm (GA) to optimize the electromagnetic parameters of the CIP substrate. By selecting the appropriate shape and material for the units of pattern based on transmission line theory, as well as regulating relevant structural parameters, we successfully designed an ultra-thin broadband metamaterial absorber for the P-band. Experimental results demonstrate that within the range of 0.3–0.85 GHz, the reflection loss of our absorber remains below −5 dB, with a maximum value of −9.54 dB occurring at 0.45 GHz. Remarkably, this absorber possesses a thickness equivalent to only 1/293 of its working wavelength. Then, we conducted analyses on electric field distribution, magnetic field distribution, and energy loss density. Our findings suggest that high-performance absorption in metamaterials can be attributed to λ/4 resonant or coupling effects between structural units or diffraction phenomena. This absorber offers several advantages, including broad low-frequency absorption capability, ultra-thin profile, and convenient fabrication process, thus providing valuable theoretical insights for designing metamaterial structures.

Abstract:We report a broadband tungsten absorber based on a nanocone metallic resonant structure fabricated by self-assembly nanosphere lithography. In experimental demonstration, the fabricated absorber has more than 90% average absorption efficiency and shows superior angular tolerance in the entire visible and near-infrared spectral region. We envision that this large-scale nanostructured broadband optical absorber would find great potential in the applications of high performance optoelectronic platforms and solar-thermal energy harvesting systems.
