Abstract:An experimental demonstration of a nonimaging multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) visible light communication (VLC) system based on a cubic receiver is reported in this paper. The receiver is designed to have five photodetectors as a cubic structure to solve the problem of an ill-conditioned channel matrix. The experiment employs four independent white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as transmitters. Each of them transmits a different bit stream with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation and a bit-and-power allocation algorithm. By measuring the highest achievable overall data rate in the typical illumination scene, the performance of the multiplexing gain of the system is demonstrated. The experimental results reveal that the highest spectral efficiency is about 14.5 bit/s/Hz, and the multiplexing gain is up to 2.134 times at the center point among four LEDs. Besides, the system can support user mobility in real time, since it does not require the receiver adjustment and alignment.
Enhanced Performance of Spatial Modulation with Angular Diversity Receiver for Indoor Visible Light Communication.

Abstract:Multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) technique is adapted to achieve high speed transmission in visible light communication (VLC) system. In MIMO VLC system, spatial modulation (SM) is employed to avoid inter-channel interference (ICI). However, the performance of SM MIMO indoor VLC system is restricted by the high channel response correlation. In this paper, we propose an angular diversity receiver approach for SM MIMO VLC system. By varying the receivers' normal vectors, the correlation of the channel transfer matrix is effectively reduced, which leads to 7 ~ 8dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gains at BER level of 10-3 compared to the conventional SM in MIMO VLC system. Additionally, the horizontal rotation and vertical shift invariance verified by the simulation results makes the proposed scheme more practical and easier to be implemented.

Abstract:Conventional non-imaging receiver for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) visible light communications (VLC) systems always suffer from the problem of ill-conditioned channel matrix due to the high correlation among sub-channels. So in this paper, a deflected field-of-views (FOVs) receiver for MIMO VLC system is proposed to reduce the correlation and also have a compact planar structure. The receiver has a diaphragm with several apertures to cover the planar array of photodetectors (PDs), so each PD will own different deflected FOV. Considering the diversity of sub-channels, the precoding method and water-filling algorithm are applied at the transmitters to achieve higher data rate or lower power consumption. In the simulation, the optimal structure parameter of the receiver is demonstrated, and the BER performance of the receiver is also verified, where DC-biased Optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) is applied. The results show that the precoding method can significantly improve the system performance and is therefore, perfectly suitable for the deflected FOVs receiver in MIMO-VLC systems.

Abstract:For the single receiver multiple-input-multiple-output (SR-MIMO) visible light communication (VLC) system, the superposing of two transmitters will introduce severe distortion in the time-domain and frequency-domain. In this paper, we first proposed a MIMO multi-branch hybrid neural network (MIMO-MBNN) as the post-equalizer in the SR-MIMO pulse amplitude magnitude eight levels (PAM8) VLC system. Compared with the traditional single-input-single-output least mean square equalizer with Volterra series (SISO-LMS) and SISO deep neural network (SISO-DNN), MIMO-MBNN can achieve at most 3.35 dB Q factor improvement. Furthermore, the operation range of MIMO-MBNN is at least 2.33 times of SISO-DNN and SISO-LMS among the measured signal peak to peak voltage. At last, 2.1 Gbps data rate is achieved by MIMO-MBNN below the 7% hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold. As far as we know, this is the highest data rate in the SR-MIMO VLC system.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication( VLC) attracts more and more interest since the combination of optical wireless communication with LED.LED array also becomes much popular in order to improve indoor lighting,so the VLC-MIMO based on LED array has arisen.The baseband processing of the VLC system is introduced in this paper,followed by two VLC-MIMO systems and the research progresses of Space-Time Block Code in VLC-MIMO. The physical channel processing and multiple antenna technology in long term evolution are discussed,and the future development of VLC system is predicted.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel configuration of VLC(visible light communication) system based on sub-carrier multiplexing of MIMO-OFDM is proposed. The system consists of a MIMO array of white LEDs to transmit and receive data. The data is respectively modulated by two sub-carriers at 6.25MHz and 12.5MHz. An overview of the system configuration is described, and the transmission experiment is implemented. Related experimental description, results and analysis are reported in this paper.

Abstract:This paper first brings a single receiver multiple-input-multiple-output (SR-MIMO) model to realize the space multiplexing in the visible light communication (VLC) system. The signals from two transmitters are super-imposed in the receiver thus to realize a specially superposed modulation. Depending on the power ratio between two transmitters, various superposed signal structures can be obtained. In order to separate the superposed signal, we design a novel detection algorithm which consists of the successive interference cancellation (SIC) and the look-up table (LUT). Extensive experiments demonstrate that a data rate of 1.5Gbit/s is achieved in the 1.3-m indoor line-of-sight (LOS) scenario with the bit error rates (BERs) are below the forward error correction (FEC) threshold. Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a visible light communication (VLC) system using continuous phase modulation (CPM) and prove its advantage in energy efficiency over orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme. Furthermore, to ensure the feasibility of broadband communications in indoor optical multipath environments, we propose algorithms including linear decomposition-based channel compensation to combat the inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and correlation matrix-based highly power-efficient CPM signal reconstruction to recover the original CPM signal without multipath effects. Additionally, in the signal reconstruction algorithm, a condition-enhanced method is proposed to solve the condition number problem of correlation matrix. The algorithms are verified and evaluated in terms of the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) simulation and bit error rate (BER) experiments. The power efficiency, the fading compensation character promote the proposed CPM transceiver to be a practical VLC candidate.

Abstract:Recently, visible light communication (VLC) technology has attracted great attention in both academia and industry. In this paper, a spatial modulation (SM) based multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) VLC system with input-dependent noise is investigated. Based on the input-dependent noise, the theoretical symbol error rate (SER) expression is obtained. The SER performance of SM-based MIMO VLC system is analyzed for both input-dependent noise and input-independent noise cases. Considering the trade-off between SER and transmission rate, the successful transmission rate indicator is formulated, which is the product of SER and transmission rate. An optimization problem, whose goal is to maximize the successful transmission rate, is proposed to optimize the modulation order. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the obtained SER expression. Simulations also indicate that the system with larger input-dependent noise tends to have smaller modulation order in order to maximize the successful transmission rate.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a real-time software defined multiple input multiple output (MIMO) visible light communication (VLC) system employing link adaptation of spatial multiplexing and spatial diversity. Real-time MIMO signal processing is implemented by using the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) devices. Software defined implantation of MIMO VLC can assist in enabling an adaptive and reconfigurable communication system without hardware changes. We measured the error vector magnitude (EVM), bit error rate (BER) and spectral efficiency performance for single carrier M-QAM MIMO VLC using spatial diversity and spatial multiplexing. Results show that spatial diversity MIMO VLC improves error performance at the cost of spectral efficiency that spatial multiplexing should enhance. We propose the adaptive MIMO solution that both modulation schema and MIMO schema are dynamically adapted to the changing channel conditions for enhancing the error performance and spectral efficiency. The average error-free spectral efficiency of adaptive 2x2 MIMO VLC achieved 12 b/s/Hz over 2 meters indoor dynamic transmission.

Abstract:Multiple-input multiple-output visible light communications (MIMO-VLC) have been considered as an advanced technique owing to the enhancement of communication capacity and reliability. However, the performance of MIMO-VLC highly depends on channel correlation, which means that the system performs worse when the channels are more highly correlated. Some studies have developed techniques to alleviate channel correlation and improve the performance of spatial multiplexing MIMO-VLC systems. However, these works have not considered situations where all LEDs and PDs are integrated into a compact structure. In this paper, a single-user spatial multiplexing MIMO-VLC system with densely distributed LEDs (light emitting diodes) and PDs (photodiodes) is proposed. Designs of optimal signal vectors and system structures are introduced, to fulfill multiplexing gains when LEDs and PDs are set close to each other respectively. Numerical simulations are carried out and the results illustrate that the proposed system can realize multiplexing gains over the system where LEDs and PDs are distributed densely, and also outperforms the traditional repetition coding (RC) technique.

Abstract:We proposed a lens design procedure to generate parallel light beams that facilitate optical MIMO communication with negligible interference between the un-intended transceiver pairs, in a 2×2 LED array. We designed an imaging receiver using two aspheric lenses instead of one single hemispherical lens to improve the light-beam separation performance. The proposed scheme can be extended to the scenario with ultra-dense LED array. Numerical results show that proper parameter setting in lens design can lead to negligible interference between un-intended transceiver pairs. The bit error rate performance is also evaluated.

Abstract:This letter proposes an imaging receiver scheme for an indoor multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) visible light communication (VLC), in which a fisheye lens with ultrawide field-of-view is used for high-quality imaging, so it can realize omnidirectional receiving and provide high-spatial diversity for decoding of the MIMO signals. In addition, the fisheye lens projects planar and small-sized images, which means that the integration with compact planar receiver array is feasible. Using the polynomial projection model, the optical intensity on the receiving plane is obtained, which is in accordance with the experimental result and shows that the images of the light-emitting diodes are clearly separated. The simulation results indicate that low correlations of the channel matrix are achieved, so high spectral efficiency is realized with various receiver positions under indoor circumstance. Consequently, this fisheye-lens-based imaging receiver is a potential candidate for high-performance indoor MIMO VLC applications.

Abstract:Contradictions among receiver optical power, bandwidth of photodiode, and transmission distance are ubiquitous in visible light communication (VLC) systems. In order to moderate such contradictions and improve the performance of VLC systems, we proposed a space diversity receiver for a light-emitting diode (LED)-based VLC system and experimentally demonstrated the highest data rate for an RGB LED with a 1.4 Gbit/s data rate employing two detectors located in different space positions at the same time. The maximal ratio combining algorithm was used in the VLC system for the first time. As a result, the bit error ratios of the receivers can be reduced by 48.08 dB (red LED), 12.04 dB (green LED), and 27.48 dB (blue LED) compared with any separate detector. The performance of the VLC system was significantly improved. It turned out that it was highly desirable to use multiantennas in the VLC system. Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is emerging as a promising technique to provide ubiquitous wireless connection. In this paper, a multiuser VLC system utilizing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is investigated. Since the distances of the multiple transmitter-receiver links are different, their temporal delays are also different, resulting in complex channel gain and phase differences when transformed to the frequency domain. For each subcarrier in OFDM, the corresponding precoding matrix is calculated in the frequency domain to eliminate multiuser interference. Phase information in the frequency domain is first considered, where complex, instead of real, channel matrices are used for precoding, which reduces the channel correlation and achieves better performance. Moreover, minimum dc bias, unified dc bias, and asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM-based schemes are proposed to generate real-valued nonnegative signals for intensity modulation, and their performances are validated via simulations with zero forcing and minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) precoding techniques.
Practical MIMO for Visible Light Communication

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) is seen as a complementary wireless technology to Radio Frequency (RF). However, VLC is very sensitive to the signal blockage and suffers from shadowing due to the high directionality of the optical channel. Hence there is a big interest in researching novel approaches for VLC like usage of multiple antenna techniques providing spatial diversity which can be exploited as a way to combat signal blockage and fading. We present a complete and low-cost MIMO-VLC transceiver system consisting of COTS components. In particular, we show that COTS 802.11n (WiFi) devices can be used so that the physical and data link layers of RF WiFi are reused for VLC. In addition, this allows us to directly utilize the multiple antenna (spatial) techniques available in 802.11n. Results from our measurement study show that such techniques are highly effective at improving the robustness of VLC links in the presence of obstacles and node mobility. Moreover, we show that multiple antennas can also be used to increase the data rate of VLC by means of spatial multiplexing.

Abstract:Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a promising technology to efficiently improve the achievable rate of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) enabled visible light communication (VLC) systems. Nevertheless, for conventional MIMO techniques such as spatial diversity (SD) and spatial multiplexing (SMP), the working mode of each LED transmitter is independent of users' spatial positions. In this article, we propose and investigate three user-centric MIMO techniques, including SD/SMP switching, adaptive SMP (aSMP), and SD-aided aSMP (SD-aSMP), for achievable rate improvement of indoor MIMO-VLC systems, by exploiting users' spatial positions as a new degree of diversity. The analytical and simulation results show that the achievable rate of a 4 × 4 MIMO-VLC system in a typical indoor environment can be significantly improved by applying the user-centric MIMO techniques compared with the conventional ones. More specifically, SD/SMP switching can enjoy both high diversity gain of SD and high multiplexing gain of SMP at different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions, while aSMP mitigates the adverse effect of noise amplification in conventional SMP and SD-aSMP can benefit from additional diversity gain. Furthermore, we also show that the proposed user-centric MIMO techniques outperform conventional MIMO techniques under the condition of only slightly increased computational complexity with limited feedback information.
