Abstract:This paper introduces a creative VLC positioning system based on LEDs utilizing MIMO technology and diversity reception technology. The simulation results show that the diversity reception can significantly improve the receiving performance. Furthermore, the best receiving region, lamp spacing, half angle of half power and distance between two receivers are found which can be very useful in practical application.

Abstract:Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a promising technology to efficiently improve the achievable rate of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) enabled visible light communication (VLC) systems. Nevertheless, for conventional MIMO techniques such as spatial diversity (SD) and spatial multiplexing (SMP), the working mode of each LED transmitter is independent of users' spatial positions. In this article, we propose and investigate three user-centric MIMO techniques, including SD/SMP switching, adaptive SMP (aSMP), and SD-aided aSMP (SD-aSMP), for achievable rate improvement of indoor MIMO-VLC systems, by exploiting users' spatial positions as a new degree of diversity. The analytical and simulation results show that the achievable rate of a 4 × 4 MIMO-VLC system in a typical indoor environment can be significantly improved by applying the user-centric MIMO techniques compared with the conventional ones. More specifically, SD/SMP switching can enjoy both high diversity gain of SD and high multiplexing gain of SMP at different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions, while aSMP mitigates the adverse effect of noise amplification in conventional SMP and SD-aSMP can benefit from additional diversity gain. Furthermore, we also show that the proposed user-centric MIMO techniques outperform conventional MIMO techniques under the condition of only slightly increased computational complexity with limited feedback information.

Enhanced Performance of Spatial Modulation with Angular Diversity Receiver for Indoor Visible Light Communication.

Abstract:Multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) technique is adapted to achieve high speed transmission in visible light communication (VLC) system. In MIMO VLC system, spatial modulation (SM) is employed to avoid inter-channel interference (ICI). However, the performance of SM MIMO indoor VLC system is restricted by the high channel response correlation. In this paper, we propose an angular diversity receiver approach for SM MIMO VLC system. By varying the receivers' normal vectors, the correlation of the channel transfer matrix is effectively reduced, which leads to 7 ~ 8dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gains at BER level of 10-3 compared to the conventional SM in MIMO VLC system. Additionally, the horizontal rotation and vertical shift invariance verified by the simulation results makes the proposed scheme more practical and easier to be implemented.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication( VLC) attracts more and more interest since the combination of optical wireless communication with LED.LED array also becomes much popular in order to improve indoor lighting,so the VLC-MIMO based on LED array has arisen.The baseband processing of the VLC system is introduced in this paper,followed by two VLC-MIMO systems and the research progresses of Space-Time Block Code in VLC-MIMO. The physical channel processing and multiple antenna technology in long term evolution are discussed,and the future development of VLC system is predicted.

Abstract:With the characteristics of energy-saving and no electromagnetic interference,visible light communication (VLC) technology is becoming more and more welcomed in indoor positioning system.However,due to the influence of system delay between signals including delay caused by devices,path delay and signal delay,positioning accuracy of an indoor visible light positioning system will be affected when targets receive positioning information from multiple LEDs.In this paper,we find that the intensity of the received signal will have a fluctuation due to the existence of system delay through simulation and experiment for the first time.In this Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) system,the specific system delay of the system under different conditions is mitigated by introducing delay between transmitted signals and comparing the bit error rate of the system.By using beamforming,the positioning accuracy of visible light positioning system is improved.

Abstract:Abstract Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging optical communication technology, and indoor positioning of moving target devices is one of most important issues in the VLC system. In this study, we focused on LED base station location planning to improve the accuracy of the positioning method based on the received signal strength intensity (RSS) and the Kalman filter (KF). We developed a new base station location-planning scheme called equilateral triangle distribution. We proved theoretically that the equilateral triangle distribution scheme reduced the positioning error area when compared with the rectangular distribution scheme. The simulation results showed that the measuring error of the equilateral triangle distribution method using KF was less than 5 cm, even when the receiver was located at the boundary of the room. Our method verified that the VLC indoor positioning accuracy can be improved when LED base stations are distributed according to our equilateral triangle distribution scheme.

Abstract:Contradictions among receiver optical power, bandwidth of photodiode, and transmission distance are ubiquitous in visible light communication (VLC) systems. In order to moderate such contradictions and improve the performance of VLC systems, we proposed a space diversity receiver for a light-emitting diode (LED)-based VLC system and experimentally demonstrated the highest data rate for an RGB LED with a 1.4 Gbit/s data rate employing two detectors located in different space positions at the same time. The maximal ratio combining algorithm was used in the VLC system for the first time. As a result, the bit error ratios of the receivers can be reduced by 48.08 dB (red LED), 12.04 dB (green LED), and 27.48 dB (blue LED) compared with any separate detector. The performance of the VLC system was significantly improved. It turned out that it was highly desirable to use multiantennas in the VLC system. Abstract:Multiple-input multiple-output visible light communications (MIMO-VLC) have been considered as an advanced technique owing to the enhancement of communication capacity and reliability. However, the performance of MIMO-VLC highly depends on channel correlation, which means that the system performs worse when the channels are more highly correlated. Some studies have developed techniques to alleviate channel correlation and improve the performance of spatial multiplexing MIMO-VLC systems. However, these works have not considered situations where all LEDs and PDs are integrated into a compact structure. In this paper, a single-user spatial multiplexing MIMO-VLC system with densely distributed LEDs (light emitting diodes) and PDs (photodiodes) is proposed. Designs of optimal signal vectors and system structures are introduced, to fulfill multiplexing gains when LEDs and PDs are set close to each other respectively. Numerical simulations are carried out and the results illustrate that the proposed system can realize multiplexing gains over the system where LEDs and PDs are distributed densely, and also outperforms the traditional repetition coding (RC) technique.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) technology can simultaneously support voice, video broadcast, indoor positioning, and other value-added services. In this paper, Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are used to transmit multiple high definition television programs with the combination of VLC as the access point and power line communication (PLC) as the network backbone to avoid the sophisticated networking issue. The positioning function was also implemented into this integrated VLC+PLC system by generate unique identification label sequences through Manchester coding for each LED, using on-off keying to modulate light to send label beacons, and utilizing photo-diode to receive it. Since the label information of the reference point is associated with each LED's location and stored in the server database using passive positioning as an example, when the target point is within the communication range of a reference point, it will receive the optical signal transmitted by this particular reference point and the target point can be located by the server. The video broadcast service and the indoor label positioning within VLC+PLC system are independent services needing different transmission schemes [1]. In this paper, a novel scheme is proposed to integrate the video broadcast service and indoor label positioning into one LED, which can support these two services at the same time.

Abstract:As a combination of lighting and optical communication, to broaden the spectrum resource, green energy-saving new wireless communication technology, LED visible light communication(VLC) technology based application in indoor positioning system has recently become a very hot research topic. The domestic and foreign research on LED visible light communication in indoor positioning technology is divided into non-imaging positioning technology and imaging positioning technology. Among them, there are four non-imaging positioning technology methods: triangulation method, scenario analysis, proximity method and hybrid techniques with VLC and Ad Hoc wireless network. This article provides an overview of these two technologies, and their performance are compared. Finally the outlook for future research are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a 2×2 imaging Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO)-Visible Light Communication (VLC) system by employing Space Balanced Coding (SBC) based on two RGB LEDs and integrated PIN array reception. We experimentally demonstrated 1.4-Gbit/s VLC transmission at a distance of 2.5m. The proposed imaging system not only overcomes the limitation of bandwidth existing in LEDs, but also can reject the second-order nonlinearity distortion. It turned out to be very promising to use integrated antennas in the VLC system in the future.

Abstract:Exploiting the increasingly wide use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) lighting, in this paper we propose a reversed indoor positioning system (IPS) based on LED visible light communication (VLC) in order to improve indoor positioning accuracy. Unlike other VLC positioning systems, we employ two annular receivers with multi-photodiodes installed on the ceiling to locate the persons who carry LEDs. The basic idea is using multi-photodiodes to calculate the angle while using the received signal strength (RSS) method to calculate the distance. The experiment results show that the effective positioning range of the proposed system is 1.8 m when the distance between two receivers is 1.2 m. Moreover, a positioning error less than 0.2 m can be achieved under the condition that the radius of the PIN circle is between 0.16 m and 0.2 m, and the distance of the transmitter-receiver plane is less than 1.8 m, which will be effective in practice.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) using light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) has been a popular research area recently. VLC can provide a practical solution for indoor positioning. In this paper, the impact of multipath reflections on indoor VLC positioning is investigated, considering a complex indoor environment with walls, floor and ceiling. For the proposed positioning system, an LED bulb is the transmitter and a photo-diode (PD) is the receiver to detect received signal strength (RSS) information. Combined deterministic and modified Monte Carlo (CDMMC) method is applied to compute the impulse response of the optical channel. Since power attenuation is applied to calculate the distance between the transmitter and receiver, the received power from each reflection order is analyzed. Finally, the positioning errors are estimated for all the locations over the room and compared with the previous works where no reflections considered. Three calibration approaches are proposed to decrease the effect of multipath reflections.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) and visible light positioning (VLP) systems are usually designed separately to prevent mutual interference, while terminal mobility often introduces challenges that can degrade their performance. In this paper, we propose an integrated visible light communication and positioning (VLCP) scheme designed for mobile scenarios, encompassing both multiple-input–single-output (MISO) and multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) configurations. This scheme integrates both functionalities into a unified system. Utilizing decision feedback channel estimation (DFCE), we effectively estimate the dynamic channel state information (CSI) for both VLC and VLP, thereby potentially enhancing both communication and positioning performance. Simulation results across various routes verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. It is observed that when the terminal moves at 1 m/s, the VLCP scheme with DFCE can maintain reliable transmission quality, ensuring bit error rates (BERs) consistently below 1.3 × 10−2. Additionally, the mean positioning errors remain within the centimeter range in different routes, not exceeding 4.3 cm and 15.5 cm in the MISO and MIMO scenarios, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we study linear transceiver designs for indoor visible light communications (VLCs) with multiple light emitting diodes (LEDs). Specifically, we investigate VLCs including white emitting diodes and VLCs including red/green/blue (RGB) LEDs. The transmitter precoding and the offset are jointly designed by considering certain key practical lighting constraints, such as optical power, non-negativeness, and color illumination. Various non-convex transceiver design problems are formulated aiming to minimize total mean-square-error to improve transmission reliability. We show that for multi-input single-output white VLCs, the optimal precoding reduces to a simple LED selection strategy. For multi-input multi-output (MIMO) white VLCs, we prove that the optimization problem with multiple constraints can be equivalently simplified to a problem with single constraint, which enables us to propose efficient algorithms to search local optimal solutions. For MIMO RGB VLCs, by using certain useful transformations, we show that the precoding design is equivalent to covariance matrix design of transmit signals, which can be further transformed to a convex optimization problem. To develop an algorithm to find the optimal solution, we derive the optimal structure of the covariance matrix and show that the optimal solution can be obtained via a water-filling approach. Extensive simulation results are provided to verify the performance of the proposed designs.
Adaptive Real-Time Software Defined MIMO Visible Light Communications using Spatial Multiplexing and Spatial Diversity

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a real-time software defined multiple input multiple output (MIMO) visible light communication (VLC) system employing link adaptation of spatial multiplexing and spatial diversity. Real-time MIMO signal processing is implemented by using the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) devices. Software defined implantation of MIMO VLC can assist in enabling an adaptive and reconfigurable communication system without hardware changes. We measured the error vector magnitude (EVM), bit error rate (BER) and spectral efficiency performance for single carrier M-QAM MIMO VLC using spatial diversity and spatial multiplexing. Results show that spatial diversity MIMO VLC improves error performance at the cost of spectral efficiency that spatial multiplexing should enhance. We propose the adaptive MIMO solution that both modulation schema and MIMO schema are dynamically adapted to the changing channel conditions for enhancing the error performance and spectral efficiency. The average error-free spectral efficiency of adaptive 2x2 MIMO VLC achieved 12 b/s/Hz over 2 meters indoor dynamic transmission.

Abstract:A non-line-of-sight (NLOS) visible light communication (VLC) system, utilizing a multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) as the detector and interleaved single-carrier frequency division multiplexing (I-SC-FDM) scheme, was first proposed and experimentally investigated in this work. Specifically, the I-SC-FDM scheme exhibits a significantly lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) than the original orthogonal frequency division multi-plexing (OFDM) and widely used discrete Fourier transform spread (DFTs)-OFDM schemes, thereby necessitating a much lower power gain, which is greatly beneficial for indoor power-sensitive VLC systems. Meanwhile, the implementation of an MPPC with high sensitivity enables the detection of faintly scattered light and thus fa-cilitates the possibility of omnidirectional optical transmission based on indoor NLOS links. Following this, an MPPC-based omnidirectional VLC system was developed and successfully achieved a net data rate up to 18 Mbps in a 3.6 m x 3 m x 3 m room, with a joint deployment of the I-SC-FDM scheme and hybrid time-frequency domain equalization (TFD-EQ) strategy. Such results can be viewed as an expansion of indoor VLC systems beyond line-of-sight (LOS) links and serve as a reference for the practical application of Light-Fidelity (LiFi) in future optical wireless access.

Abstract:This paper proposes an indoor visible light communication (VLC) system with multiple transmitters and receivers. Due to diffusivity of LED light beams, photodiode receive signals from many directions. We use one concave and one convex lens as optical antenna, and obtain the optimal lens structure by optimizing which corresponds to the minimum condition number of channel gain matrix. In this way the light emitted by different LED can be separated well from each other then minimize signal interference. However, interference increases in the case of system deviation, so we explore the system mobility. Then subsequent signal processing is carried out, including signal combining and successive interference cancellation (SIC). We combine the same signal received by different receivers to improve signal to interference noise ratio (SINR). And SIC can effectively restore interference and eliminate its impact. The simulation results show that channel capacity can be increased by more than 5 times and up to 20 times under the condition of receiver and transmitter alignment. In the case of movement, channel capacity can also be increased by about 4 times on average. Moreover, the mobile range of system is also significantly expanded.

Abstract:In view of the application of a visible light positioning system in a public indoor environment with numerous light emitting diodes (LEDs), a long delay is one of the main factors that limits the performance of the positioning systemwith a moving device. To solve this problem, a multiple access scheme based on block encoding time division multiplexing (TDM) is proposed in this paper. In our scheme, nine LEDs compose one block to reduce the system delay. Meanwhile, in order to reduce intercell interference, an extended binary coded decimal code is used to encode signals transmitted by LEDs. The feasibility and performance of the scheme is demonstrated by simulations. The results show that the proposed TDMscheme provides a better performance than the conventional TDM and is more applicable to the accurate positioning of a moving device.
