Abstract:Plasmonic Fano resonances hold immense potential for biosensors and optical information processing due to their sharp spectral response. A majority of nanogap-involved complex metallic nanostructures have been demonstrated to support Fano resonances, but the gap distance between the constituents are very difficult to control without the use of sophisticated microfabrication techniques. Here, we propose a simple π-shaped metallic nanostructure that is free from the particular requirement of nanogaps to generate a strong plasmonic Fano resonance. The plasmonic Fano resonance is demonstrated to be a result of the interference between a broad magnetic dipolar mode and a narrow electric quadrupolar mode. We realize the π-shaped nanostructure experimentally by employing the angle-resolved nanosphere lithography to produce partially overlapped double metallic nanotriangles. The effect of the geometry parameters including the length of the base and the size of π-shaped nanostructure on the Fano resonance is investigated in detail. As an application example, we further show that the π-shaped double metallic nanotriangles could be used as a Fano-based sensor for refractive index sensing, in which a threefold enhancement of sensitivity is achieved as compared with the single nanotriangle-based sensor.

Abstract:The determination of nanoscale distances or distance changes necessitates a nanoscale ruler. In the present paper, distance dependence of particle temperature in an optically heated gold nanoparticle pair is quantitatively investigated to explore the possibility of creating a plasmon ruler based on this effect. The two origins of the distance-dependence, i.e., electromagnetic coupling and thermal accumulative effect, are studied. For the particle temperature, a scaling behavior is found, and it suggests that the decay of particle temperature with the interparticle gap for different particle sizes follows a common exponential decay equation. This scaling behavior is qualitatively explained with a simple dipolar-coupling model combined with a point heat source interaction model. On the basis of this scaling behavior of absorption power, we further establish a plasmon ruler equation relating the particle temperature and the interparticle distance. Our findings can serve as an excellent guideline for designing and optimizing temperature-based plasmon rulers.

Abstract:AbstractThe rapid developments in nanotechnology and plasmonics allow the manipulation of light at nanometer scales, such as light propagation and resonances. Differing from the symmetric Lorentzian‐like profiles in the conventional resonances, Fano resonances, which originate from the interference of different resonant modes, exhibit obviously asymmetric spectral profiles. Based on lineshape engineering, the Fano resonances with sharp asymmetric profiles exhibit a small linewidth and a high spectral contrast by exploiting different mechanisms and designing various metallic nanostructures. Both of the above properties in the sharp Fano resonances have significant applications in nanoscale plasmonic sensors and modulators. This review summarizes the underlying mechanism of the Fano resonances in various metallic nanostructures. Then, practical applications of the Fano resonances in nanoscale plasmonic sensing and modulation are reviewed. At last, the development and challenges of plasmonic sensing and modulation based on Fano resonances are discussed.
Double Fano Resonance and Independent Regulation Characteristics in a Rectangular-like Nanotetramer Metasurface Structure

Abstract:Fano resonance, which is based on a plasmonic metasurface, has many potential applications in various fields, such as biochemical sensors, slow light effect, and integrated optical circuits. In this study, a rectangular-like nanotetramer metasurface structure composed of four round-head nanorods was designed. The transmission spectrum, surface charge, and electrical field distributions of the proposed structure were simulated using the finite element method. A double Fano resonance profile was observed in the transmission spectrum. One of the Fano resonances was caused by the symmetry breaking and plasmon hybridization between the horizontal double rods, whereas the other resonance was due to the plasmonic modes’ hybridization among four nanorods. These resonances could be independently tuned because of different formation mechanisms. The number of Fano resonances could be adjusted by changing the coupling distance between the horizontal and vertical rods. The results contributed to designing the highly sensitive sensors based on the plasmonic metasurface.

Abstract:Plasmonic and photonic nanostructures can manipulate light-matter interaction, leading to a wide range of tunable properties. Here, we show that multiple Fano and plasmon resonances can be generated in quasi-3D plasmonic nanostructure arrays on rectangle grid photonic nanostructure substrates. The Fano resonances are the quasiguided modes coupled with the plasmon resonance while the distinct plasmon resonances are the localized surface plasmon resonances of the top gold thin film with sub-wavelength nanohole array and the bottom gold nanodisk array. The Fano and plasmon resonances can be tuned separately and selectively by changing the dimension of photonic and plasmonic nanostructures.

Abstract:Fano resonance can be achieved by the destructive interference between a superradiant bright mode and a subradiant dark mode. A variety of artificial plasmonic oligomers have been fabricated to generate Fano resonance for its extensive applications. However, the Fano resonance in plasmonic oligomer systems comes from the interaction of all metal particles, which greatly limits the tunability of the Fano resonance. Besides, only a single Fano resonance is supported by many existing plasmonic oligomers, while multiple Fano resonances mostly occur in complex and multilayer structures, whose fabrication is greatly challenging. Here, a simple asymmetric plasmonic molecule consisting of a central metal disk and two side-coupled parallel metal rods is demonstrated. The simulation and experimental results clearly show that double Fano resonances appear in the transmission spectrum. In addition, the two Fano peaks can be independently tuned and single/double Fano peak switching can be achieved by changing one rod length or the gap distances between the rods and the disk. The modulation method is simple and effective, which greatly increases the tunability of the structure. The proposed asymmetric artificial plasmonic molecule can have applications in multi-channel optical switches, filters and biosensors. Moreover, the controllable plasmonic field intensity in the gap between the disk and rods also provides a new control means for plasmon-induced photocatalytic reactions and biosynthesis.

Abstract:Fano resonances are numerically predicted in an ultracompact plasmonic structure, comprising a metal-isolator-metal (MIM) waveguide side-coupled with two identical stub resonators. This phenomenon can be well explained by the analytic model and the relative phase analysis based on the scattering matrix theory. In sensing applications, the sensitivity of the proposed structure is about 1.1 x 10(3) nm/RIU and its figure of merit is as high as 2 x 10(5) at lambda=980 nm, which is due to the sharp asymmetric Fano line-shape with an ultra-low transmittance at this wavelength. This plasmonic structure with such high figure of merits and footprints of only about 0.2 mu m(2) may find important applications in the on-chip nano-sensors.

Abstract:Plasmonic Fano resonance has attracted extensive attention due to its many applications, including plasmonic sensing, electromagnetically induced transparency, light trapping and stopping, due to its narrow linewidth and asymmetric spectral shape. However, many metal nanostructures are designed with complex geometries to generate Fano resonance and few of them can support a deep Fano dip. Herein we report on the strengthening of the Fano resonance on silicon-supported Au nanoplates through the formation of (Au nanosphere)-(Au nanoplate) heterodimers. The deposition of the Au nanosphere on the top can greatly strengthen the substrate-induced Fano resonance of the Au nanoplate with a deep dip. We also observe that the replacement of the Au nanosphere with a Au nanocube can suppress the excitation of the Fano resonance in the heterodimer. When the sharp corners and edges of the nanocubes gradually become rounded, the Fano resonance appears again with increasing asymmetry. Both the dip depth and wavelength of the Fano resonance can be independently tailored by varying the nanosphere diameter and the nanoplate thickness, respectively. We believe that our results provide an attractive and facile platform for modulating Fano dips and constructing Fano resonance-based devices.
Tunable Multiple Fano Resonances Based on a Plasmonic Metal-Insulator-metal Structure for Nano-Sensing and Plasma Blood Sensing Applications

Abstract:A base plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide structure consisting of a baffle waveguide and an obround-shaped resonator is designed to produce Fano resonance. The simulation results exhibit that double Fano resonances can be achieved. Based on this structure, an inner obround-shaped resonator is spliced to the former obround-shaped resonator through a slot resonator to form the expanded structure. Then quadruple Fano resonances are produced by the interference between the broadband continuous state arising from the baffle waveguide and the narrowband discrete state arising from the interaction among the inner obround-shaped resonator, the outer obround-shaped resonator, and the slot resonator. The Fano resonance and refractive index sensing characteristics are investigated, and the sensitivity and the figure of merit can reach 1636 nm/RIU and 33562, respectively. Furthermore, the structure filled with blood plasma can be used for detecting plasma concentrations with different refractive indices, and the sensitivity can reach 2.88 n m ⋅ L / g . The proposed structure with the simple baffle waveguide and obround-shaped resonators may have potential applications in biosensing and nanoscale optical sensing.
Plasmonic nanosensor based on multiple independently tunable Fano resonances

Abstract:A novel refractive index nanosensor with compound structures is proposed in this paper. It consists of three different kinds of resonators and two stubs which are side-coupled to a metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) waveguide. By utilizing numerical investigation with the finite element method (FEM), the simulation results show that the transmission spectrum of the nanosensor has as many as five sharp Fano resonance peaks. Due to their different resonance mechanisms, each resonance peak can be independently tuned by adjusting the corresponding parameters of the structure. In addition, the sensitivity of the nanosensor is found to be up to 1900 nm/RIU. For practical application, a legitimate combination of various different components, such as T-shaped, ring, and split-ring cavities, has been proposed which dramatically reduces the nanosensor dimensions without sacrificing performance. These design concepts pave the way for the construction of compact on-chip plasmonic structures, which can be widely applied to nanosensors, optical splitters, filters, optical switches, nonlinear photonic and slow-light devices.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters B, Ahead of Print. Fano resonance sensors based on metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide have potential applications in fields such as biology, chemistry, and the environment. Here, a nanosensor based on Fano resonance in an MIM-based isosceles triangular resonator system is proposed and numerically studied by finite element method. Simulation results show that the Fano peak can be easily tuned by adjusting the scale factor and the refractive index within the resonator. Furthermore, we thoroughly analyze the impact of the apex angle, rotation angle, and vertical displacement of the resonator on the transmission spectrum. Finally, the sensing characteristics of the proposed structure are optimized and analyzed, and a high-performance plasmonic sensor with a sensitivity of 1100[math]nm/RIU and the maximum figure of merit of [math] is obtained. The distinctive attributes of our suggested structure are applicable in the realization of various integrated components for the development of multifunctional high-performance nanophotonics devices.

Abstract:Plasmonic Fano resonance arises from the destructive interference between a superradiant and a subradiant plasmon mode that overlap spectrally with each other. Because of its importance in revealing many physical phenomena and its applications in sensing, metamaterials, photoswitching and spectroscopy, a variety of metal nanostructures have been fabricated to generate Fano resonance. However, few metal nanostructures can support deep Fano resonance with strong polarization dependence. Herein, we report on the observation of deep Fano resonance with strong polarization dependence in Au nanoplate-nanosphere heterodimers. Experiments and simulations reveal that the presence of a nanosphere at one side edge or one vertex of the nanoplate causes distinct Fano resonance. With increasing nanosphere sizes, the shape of the scattering spectrum becomes more asymmetric, with the Fano dip getting deeper correspondingly. When the nanosphere diameter reaches 68 nm, the Fano dip almost reaches the spectral background. Moreover, the heterodimers with the nanosphere attached to one vertex of the nanoplate exhibit Fano resonance with strong polarization dependence. Such heterodimers are very attractive for constructing polarization-controlled plasmonic Fano switches.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on the design and observation of double Fano resonances (DFRs) in an individual symmetry-reduced nanostructure and the induced high sensing sensitivity. Such a plasmonic nanostructure consists of a partially overlapped double-metallic nanotriangles with unequal sizes fabricated by using fast and low-cost angle-resolved nanosphere lithography. Symmetry breaking generates two narrow quadrupolar dark modes, which further enhance the coupling with fundamental bright dipole modes within the same structure, manifesting the effect of DFRs. The resonance wavelength and line shape of DFRs can be tailored by changing the degree of asymmetry as well as the size of the designed nanostructure. Based on DFRs, a high sensitivity to dielectric environment with a maximum figure of merit of 35 is measured. Due to a fast manufacturing process with high reproducibility and high structural tunability, the fabricated individual metallic nanostructure provides an opportunity for significant potential applications in localized surface plasmon resonance based single or double-wavelength sensors in the near-infrared region.

Abstract:Plasmonic Fano resonances (FRs) in nanostructures have been extensively studied in recent years. Nanorod-based complexes for FRs have also attracted much attention. The basic optical properties and fabrication technology of different kinds of plasmonic nanorods have been greatly developed over the last several years. The mutipole plasmon resonances and their flexible adjustment ranges on nanorods make them promising for FR modifications and structure diversity. In this paper, we review some recently studied plasmonic nanorod based nanostructures for FRs, including single nanorods, dimers, mutipole rods and nanorod-nanoparticle hybrids. The corresponding applications of the FRs are also briefly discussed.
Tunable Nanosensor Based on Fano Resonances Created by Changing the Deviation Angle of the Metal Core in a Plasmonic Cavity

Abstract:In this paper, a type of tunable plasmonic refractive index nanosensor based on Fano resonance is proposed and investigated. The sensor comprises a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) nanocavity with a center-deviated metal core and two side-coupled waveguides. By carefully adjusting the deviation angle and distance of the metal core in the cavity, Fano resonances can be obtained and modulated. The Fano resonances can be considered as results induced by the symmetry-breaking or geometric effect that affects the field distribution intensity at the coupling region between the right waveguide and the cavity. Such a field-distribution pattern change can be regarded as being caused by the interference between the waveguide modes and the cavity modes. The investigations demonstrate that the spectral positions and modulation depths of Fano resonances are highly sensitive to the deviation parameters. Furthermore, the figure of merit (FOM) value is calculated for different deviation angle. The result shows that this kind of tunable sensor has compact structure, high transmission, sharp Fano lineshape, and high sensitivity to the change in background refractive index. This work provides an effective method for flexibly tuning Fano resonance, which has wide applications in designing on-chip plasmonic nanosensors or other relevant devices, such as information modulators, optical filters, and ultra-fast switches.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the plasmon coupling in metallic nanorod dimers. A pronounced dip is found in the extinction spectrum due to plasmonic Fano resonance, which is induced by destructive interference between the bright dipole plasmon of a short nanorod and the dark quadrupole plasmon of a long nanorod. This Fano interference can also be explained as the coupling between the bright and dark modes both supported by the whole dimer. The Fano resonance can be tuned by adjusting the spatial or spectral separation between two nanorods in the dimer.

Abstract:A simple structure composed of a gold nanoparticle and a transition metal dichalcogenide flake is designed to experimentally achieve multiple Fano resonances. An out‐of‐plane plasmon mode is found to interfere with the Fabry–Pérot cavity modes to form multiple Fano resonances. This work will pave the way for the design of optical modes for precise sensing and light modulation. Multiple Fano resonances (mFRs) are arising as a promising optical platform to achieve precise sensing and detection. However, experimentally achieving mFRs by simple structures has remained challenging, which impedes the widespread applications of mFRs. Herein a simple structure composed of a single colloidal metal nanoparticle and a transition metal dichalcogenide flake to simultaneously achieve up to 8 FRs in experiments is demonstrated. Combining theoretical and experimental techniques, that an out‐of‐plane plasmon mode of the metal nanoparticle interferes with the Fabry–Pérot cavity modes from the WS2 flake to form mFRs in the visible region is proved. The simplicity and generality of the method further allow us to systematically study the tunability of the mFRs, in terms of the peak/dip positions and the number of FRs, by changing the structural parameters, which include the thickness of the WS2 flake, size and shape of the plasmonic nanoparticle. In addition, the quality of the mFRs is proved to be adjustable by tuning the reflectivity of the substrate in the system. The highest quality factor and spectral contrast of the achieved resonances are up to ≈180 and ≈0.95, respectively. The simple structure and high‐quality optical modes will prosper applications in precise sensing and light modulation.

Abstract:Here in, a tunable nano refractive index sensor structure consisting of a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide with a metal stub coupled with a protractor type half ring cavity (PTHRC) is designed based on surface plasmon polaritons. The propagation characteristics of the plasmonic waveguide coupled system is analyzed by using finite element method (FEM). The sharp asymmetric Fano resonance in the transmission spectrum is generated by the interaction between narrow discrete mode of the PTHRC and wide continuous mode of the metal stub on the waveguide, which is demonstrated by simulation results. At the same time, the influence of diverse arguments on the performance of the nano-sensor system is analyzed, and the shape and position of the formant can be adjusted by changing the key arguments. The maximum sensitivity and FOM of the refractive-index sensor is 1600 nm/RIU and 50. The investigation has potential application prospect in optical integrated circuit and it also provides a tunable and easy to fabricate structure choice for nano-biosensors and other fields.
