Abstract:Fano resonances in plasmonic nanostructures have received widespread attention due to their potential applications in chemical/biological sensing, optical switching, and filtering. However, these plasmonic structures, generally made of noble metals, suffer from large dissipation, which may significantly degrade the performance of the Fano-effect-based devices, especially in the visible region. In addition, large-area fabrication of symmetry-breaking nanostructures for generating strong plasmonic Fano effect is a great challenge for current fabrication techniques. Here, we report that asymmetric Fano line shape can be observed in the light scattered from single silicon nanorod, which is the result of the interaction between a spectrally narrow Fabry-Perot resonance and a broad Mie-like resonance. We show that the Fano resonances in the silicon nanorod are strongly direction-dependent for transverse magnetic (TM) polarization and the ratio of forward to backward scattering at around the Fano dip can be higher than 19. The positions of the directional Fano resonances can be adjusted by changing the radius or the length of the silicon nanorod. By means of the directional Fano resonance, silicon-nanorod-based optical switch and refractive index sensor are proposed. Our findings open up a new avenue for developing all-dielectric integrated photonic devices at visible and near-infrared wavelengths.
