Abstract:The influence of CO-pretreatment on the properties of CuO-V2O5/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts was investigated in the reduction of NO by CO. Catalytic performance results showed that the pretreated CuO-V2O5/gamma-Al2O3 exhibited extremely high activity and selectivity. For example, NO conversion can be remarkably enhanced from 13.8% to 100.0% for the 03Cu01V catalyst. For the catalyst characterization, the XRD results suggested that copper oxide and vanadium oxide were highly dispersed on the surface of gamma-Al2O3 and the TPR results gave evidence for the existence of Cu2+-O-V5+ species. The XPS and EPR results demonstrated that Cu2+ and V5+ were reduced to lower valence states (Cu2+ -> Cu+, V5+ -> V4+) by the CO-pretreatment, which was proved by in situ FT-IR to be beneficial to the adsorption of CO and dissociation of NO. In addition, the interaction between the dispersed copper oxide and vanadium oxide species upon the gamma-Al2O3 support before and after CO-pretreatment was tentatively discussed, using the concept of SSOV ( surface synergetic oxygen vacancy) which was proposed elsewhere. According to this concept, the dispersed Cu2+-O-V5+ species could be reduced to Cu+-Upsilon-V4+ (Upsilon represents an oxygen vacancy) by CO-pretreatment and it was considered to be the primary active species for the reaction. Based on the discussion of the experiment results, a possible mechanism was proposed.

Abstract:The CuO/CeO2 catalysts were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS), X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and NO+CO reaction. The results revealed that the low temperature (<150 °C) catalytic performances were enhanced for CO pretreated samples. During CO pretreatment, the surface Cu+/Cu0 and oxygen vacancies on ceria surface were present. The low valence copper species activated the adsorbed CO and surface oxygen vacancies facilitated the NO dissociation. These effects in turn led to higher activities of CuO/CeO2 for NO reduction. The current study provided helpful understandings of active sites and reaction mechanism in NO+CO reaction.

Abstract:The dispersion of copper oxide species on γ-Al2O3 before and after CO-pretreatment was characterized by XRD, H2-TPR and in-situ IR. The catalytic activities of the catalysts for CO oxidation were measured to investigate the influence of the CO-pretreatment on the catalytic properties of these catalysts. The results indicate that the catalysts pretreated by CO at 250 ℃ show a higher activity than the fresh catalysts due to the generation of surface Cu+ species, which enhances the activity of the catalysts.

Abstract:The influence of CO pretreatment on the properties of CuO/CeO2/γ-Al2O3 catalysts was investigated by XRD, H2-TPR and IR, and the activities of the catalysts in low-temperature CO oxidation reactions were tested. Abstract:The influence of CO pretreatment on the properties of CuO/γ-Al2O3 catalysts was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The activities of the treated catalysts were measured in low-temperature CO oxidation reaction (≤200°C). It is shown that CO pretreatment at 250°C mainly results in the reduction of crystalline CuO to Cu0 and dispersed Cu2+ to Cu+. CO–Cu+ interaction is much stronger than those of CO–Cu2+ and CO–Cu0, and as a result, CO molecules adsorbed on Cu+ are the main species on the fresh and CO pretreated catalysts exposed to CO stream at temperatures of 100°C and higher.

Abstract:Catalytic reduction of NO by CO was studied over a series of CuO-CoOx/γ-Al2O3 catalysts prepared by co-impregnation with different copper and cobalt precursors (acetate and nitrate) to evaluate the structure-activity relationship. The obtained samples were characterized in detail by means of XRD, LRS, XPS, H2-TPR and in situ FT-IR technologies. Results indicate that copper oxide is agglomerated while cobalt oxide is dispersed on γ-Al2O3 for the catalyst prepared from copper acetate and cobalt acetate precursors (CuACoA); CuxCo3-xO4 spinel is formed and agglomerated on the catalyst prepared from copper nitrate and cobalt nitrate precursors (CuNCoN); while both copper oxide and cobalt oxide could be homogeneously dispersed for the catalyst prepared from copper nitrate and cobalt acetate precursors (CuNCoA), which exhibits the best activity for NO reduction by CO. Probably the synergistic effect between dispersed copper oxide and cobalt oxide is propitious to the oxygen transfer, which could be the reason for its high activities. Finally, a possible reaction mechanism was tentatively proposed to explore the different catalytic performances in NO reduction by CO model reaction.

Abstract:NO reduction by CO was investigated over CO-pretreated CuO/MnOx/γ-Al2O3 catalysts with different metal precursors (nitrate and acetate). It was found that the catalyst prepared from acetate salts (Cu/Mn/Al-A) exhibited significantly higher activity than counterpart catalyst from nitrate precursors (Cu/Mn/Al-N). XRD, XPS and in situ DRIFT were carried out to approach the nature for the different catalytic performance. For both catalysts, copper mainly existed as CuO, but the status of manganese oxide was markedly different. Mn(IV) was predominant in Cu/Mn/Al-N and Mn(III) was enriched in Cu/Mn/Al-A. As a result, different dispersion behaviors of manganese oxide on γ-Al2O3 were displayed, which induced inconsistent Cu-Mn contact. The catalyst obtained from acetate precursor exhibited enriched Cu-Mn contact and thus more Cu+-□-Mn3+/2+ entities would be produced after CO pretreatment, leading to promoted NO dissociation and favorable performance in NO reduction by CO. The present study sheds light on the effective tuning of Cu-O-Mn interfacial sites in CuO/MnOx/γ-Al2O3 via modulating the dispersion behaviors of surface components.

Abstract:The influence of CO pretreatment on the properties of CuO-CoO/γ-Al(2)O(3) catalysts was investigated by SEM, TEM, XRD, LRS, XPS, TPR, and in situ FT-IR techniques. And the activities were measured by NO removal by CO. It was shown that the CuO-CoO/γ-Al(2)O(3) catalysts following CO pretreatment exhibited extremely high activity and selectivity. The interaction between copper oxide and cobalt oxide upon the γ-Al(2)O(3) support before and after CO pretreatment was tentatively discussed in the view of incorporation model. According to this model, the dispersed Cu-O-Co species could be reduced to Cu-□-Co species by CO pretreatment, which was considered to be the primary active component for this reaction. FT-IR results suggested that CO was apt to adsorb on Cu(+) sites rather than Co(2+) while the NO adsorbates could convert to much more stable species with the temperature increasing. Undoubtedly, it was the surface synergetic oxygen vacancy coupled with the adjacent Cu and Co ions that guaranteed the reaction well processing over the CO pretreated samples. As a result, a possible mechanism was tentatively proposed.
Effect of Pretreatment Method of Activated Carbon on the Catalytic Reduction of NO by Carbon over CuO

Abstract:The influence of pretreatment method of activated carbon (AC) made from coconut shell, on the NO reduction by AC over CuO was studied, in which AC was used as a reducing agent and pretreated by air oxidation or wet oxidation in the HNO3(N), H2O2(H), H2SO4(S) or H3PO4(P) aqueous solution. The results show that over the CuO catalyst, the reductive activity of air oxidized AC for NO increases with a rise of the air oxidation temperature of AC, and the order of the reductive activity of wet oxidized AC for NO is AC-H>AC-N>AC-S>AC-P. The surface chemical properties of these ACs were studied by XRD, TPD, Boehm titration and so on. The dispersion of CuO on AC can be improved by treating AC with the HNO3 or H2O2 aqueous solution. AC treated with H2O2 is an effective reducing agent for the reduction of NO over CuO, and the temperature of complete reduction of NO by AC-H is 270°C, which is 120°C lower than that by original AC. Both the high concentration of acidic oxygen groups and moderate amount of basic sites on AC-H help to increase the conversion of NO reduced by AC-H.

Abstract:Using TiO 2 as carrier, CuO/TiO 2 catalysts with different CuO loading were prepared by the impregnation method. The catalytic activities in NO+CO reaction were examined with a micro-reactor gas chromatography reaction system and the methods of TPR, XPS and NO-TPD. It was found that the catalytic activities were affected by pretreatment atmosphere, i.e. H 2 atmosphere > reduction–reoxidation > 10%CO/He > reaction gas (fresh sample). NO decomposition was better by low-valence Cu species than by high-valence Cu species, i.e. Cu 0 >Cu + >Cu 2+ . The XPS results indicated that Cu species on CuO/TiO 2 were Cu 0 , Cu + , normal Cu 2+ (Cu 2+ (I)) and chain-structured Cu 2+ (Cu 2+ (II)) as –Cu–O–Ti–O–. The activities of Cu 2+ (II) were much higher than that of Cu 2+ (I), but both species were very unstable in the reaction atmosphere and easily reduced by CO, which accounted for the variable activities of fresh catalysts with increasing reaction temperature. In NO+CO reaction, the redox process was a cycle of Cu + –Cu 2+ (I) at low reaction temperature but was a cycle of Cu 0 –Cu + at high reaction temperature. As shown by NO-TPD, high catalytic activities could be attributed to the following factors, e.g. oxygen caves on the catalyst’s surface after pretreatment with H 2 and reduction–reoxidation, formation of Cu 0 after pretreatment with H 2 , and increment of Cu species dispersion and formation of Cu 2+ (II) after pretreatment with reduction–reoxidation.

Abstract:NO reduction by CO reaction was comparatively studied over microwave plasma pretreated CuO/TiO2 catalysts employing transmission electron microscopy (TEM), hydrogen temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), and in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (in situ FTIR). The catalytic performances indicated that a remarkable improvement in activity and selectivity was achieved after microwave plasma pretreatment, which was dependent on the microwave plasma pretreatment time. The results also suggested that a high active oxygen species (O*) was formed on the surface of plasma pretreated CuO/TiO2 catalysts, which led to the easy oxidation of NO to NO2 at low temperature even without introducing any additional O2 gas into the reaction system. Therefore, these high active oxygen species (O*) should play an important role for the exaltation of the catalytic performances of the catalysts.

Study of the Properties of CuO/VOx/Ti0.5Sn0.5O2 Catalysts and Their Activities in NO + CO Reaction

Abstract:CuO/VOx/Ti0.5Sn0.5O2 catalysts were prepared by an impregnation method and were tested on a NO + CO model reaction. Both copper oxide and vanadium oxide can be highly dispersed on Ti0.5Sn0.5O2 (denoted as TS, hereafter) support. The dispersed oxides form V-O-Cu species when coexisting in the catalyst system. The formation of V-O-Cu species renders the dispersed vanadium oxide aggregated and easier to be reduced; in contrast, the reduction temperature of dispersed copper oxide species is evidently higher than that without vanadium oxide, (CuO/TS samples). The surface dispersed V-O-Cu species are mainly the active component for the NO + CO reaction. The activities of CuO/VOx/TS catalysts are highly dependent on the operating temperature and the amount of V-O-Cu species In the reaction atmosphere, NO molecules are adsorbed onto Cu2+ sites, reduced Vx+ (V4+ or V3+) sites, and even TS support, forming -NO and NO3- species. Adsorption of CO molecules proceeds only on Cu+ sites. The active species change with varying reaction temperature; hence, the NO + CO reaction goes through different mechanisms at low and high temperatures over these catalysts.
Treatment Induced Remarkable Enhancement of Low-Temperature Activity and Selectivity of Copper-Based Catalysts for No Reduction

Abstract:The poor low-temperature (200-300 degrees C) activity and N-2 selectivity of Cu-based catalysts for NO reduction by CO has driven us to further advance this process. The present work offers a simple but very promising strategy to achieve this goal by CO pre-treatment of the binary CuM/gamma-Al2O3 (M = V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) catalysts to tailor the surface active sites. The results demonstrate that CO pre-treatment significantly enhanced the low temperature NO conversion and N2 selectivity of CuM/gamma-Al2O3, depending on the type of metal oxides. Among these catalysts, CO pre-treated CuNi/gamma-A(l)2O(3) exhibited the highest activity/ selectivity (i.e., about 90% at 200 degrees C) and excellent stability. The activity improvement resulted from the following: 1) the obtainment of oxygen vacancies and more Cu+ species with the suitable ratio of dispersed Cu2+/Cu+, 2) the decrease of apparent activation energy for NO conversion and 3) the more favourable activation and dissociation of NO on the reduced surface, as evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy results.

It was showed that the properties were correlated to the selective catalytic oxidation reactivity of NO in simulated flue gas. The effect of SO 2 on the catalytic oxidation reaction and its reaction mechanism were also investigated.

Abstract:NO reduction by CO was investigated over CuO/γ-Al2O3, Mn2O3/γ-Al2O3, and CuOMn2O3/γ-Al2O3 model catalysts before and after CO pretreatment at 300 °C. The CO-pretreated CuO-Mn2O3/γ-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited higher catalytic activity than did the other catalysts. Based on X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV/Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Raman, and H2-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) results, as well as our previous studies, the possible interaction model between dispersed copper and manganese oxide species as well as γ-Al2O3 surface has been proposed. In this model, Cu and Mn ions occupied the octahedral vacant sites of γ-Al2O3, with the capping oxygen on top of the metal ions to keep the charge conservation. For the fresh CuO/γ-Al2O3 and Mn2O3/γ-Al2O3 catalysts, the -Cu-O-Cu- and -Mn-O-Mn- species were formed on the surface of γ-Al2O3, respectively; but for the fresh CuO-Mn2O3/γ-Al2O3 catalyst, -Cu-O-Mn- species existed on the surface of -Al2O3. After CO pretreatment, -Cu-□-Cu- and -Mn-□-Mn- (□ represents surface oxygen vacancy (SOV)) species would be formed in CO-pretreated CuO/γ-Al2O3 and CO-pretreated Mn2O3/γ-Al2O3 catalysts, respectively; whereas -Cu-□-Mn- species existed in CO-pretreated CuO-Mn2O3/γ-Al2O3. Herein, a new concept, surface synergetic oxygen vacancy (SSOV), which describes the oxygen vacancy formed between the individual Mn and Cu ions, is proposed for CO-pretreated CuO-Mn2O3/γ-Al2O3 catalyst. In addition, the role of SSOV has also been approached by NO temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and in situ FTIR experiments. The FTIR results of competitive adsorption between NO and CO on all the CO-pretreated CuO/γ-Al2O3, Mn2O3/γ-Al2O3, and CuO-Mn2O3/γ-Al2O3 samples demonstrated that NO molecules mainly were adsorbed on Mn2+ and CO mainly on Cu+ sites. The current study suggests that the properties of the SSOVs in CO-pretreated CuO-Mn2O3/γ-Al2O3 catalyst were significantly different to SOVs formed in CO-pretreated CuO/γ-Al2O3 and Mn2O3/γ-Al2O3 catalysts, and the SSOVs played an important role in NO reduction by CO.

Abstract:In order to investigate the influence of MnO2 modification methods on the catalytic performance of CuO/CeO2 catalyst for NO reduction by CO, two series of catalysts (xCuyMn/Ce and xCu/yMn/Ce) were prepared by co-impregnation and stepwise-impregnation methods, and characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, H2-temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (in situ DRIFTS) techniques. Furthermore, the catalytic performances of these catalysts were evaluated by NO+CO model reaction. The obtained results indicated that: (1) The catalysts acquired by co-impregnation method exhibited stronger interaction owing to the more sufficient contact among each component of the catalysts compared with the catalysts obtained by stepwise-impregnation method, which was beneficial to the improvement of the reduction behavior; (2) The excellent reduction behavior was conducive to the formation of low valence state copper species (Cu+/Cu0) and more oxygen vacancies (especially the surface synergetic oxygen vacancies (SSOV, Cu+–Mn(4–x)+)) during the reaction process, which were beneficial to the adsorption of CO species and the dissociation of NO species, respectively, and further promoted the enhancement of the catalytic performance. Finally, in order to further understand the difference between the catalytic performances of these catalysts prepared by co-impregnation and stepwise-impregnation methods, a possible reaction mechanism (schematic diagram) was tentatively proposed.

Abstract:The present work investigated the effect of reduction-oxidation(R-O) pretreatment on the CO oxidation activity of Co3O4/Al2O3 catalyst. After the reduction-oxidation treatment, the crystalline size of Co3O4 supported on the Al2O3 decreased and it exposed more Co3+, resulting in the improvement of CO oxidation activity. Compared with the as-prepared conventional Co3O4/Al2O3 catalyst, the Co3O4/Al2O3-R-O catalyst is easy to be reduced at lower temperature. The surface reconstruction occurred during the reduction-oxidation pretreatment accounting for the improvement of the catalytic activity. This study reveals the importance of R-O pretreatment as a strategy for the improvement of supported metal oxide catalyst with advanced catalytic performance.
Characterization and Catalytic Properties of Cuo/Tio2/Gamma-Al2o3 for No+Co Reaction

Abstract:The catalytic activity and properties of w% CuO/15% TiO2/gamma-Al2O3 in NO+CO reaction were examined using a micro-reactor gas chromatography reaction system. When pretreated by air and H-2, the catalysts had 100% NO conversion at 3 25 and 275 degrees C, respectively. The XRD analysis could only detect gamma-Al2O3 crystal diffraction and weak CuO crystal diffraction peaks after 15%CuO loading. There were two H2-TPR reduction peaks in CuO-TiO2/gamma-Al2O3, the a peak due to the highly dispersed CuO which spread on gamma-Al2O3 surface and the other peak due to the highly dispersed CuO which dispersed on 15%TiO2/gamma-Al2O3 surface. The DRIFTS analysis showed that catalysts with pretreatment in air or H-2 atmosphere adsorbed NO+CO gases, and the N2O adsorption peaks appeared at 200 and 150 degrees C respectively.
