Abstract:The emphasis of this paper is to introduce a novel concept of birandom variable and to exhibit the framework of birandom programming. The so-called birandom variable is a measurable mapping from a probability space to a collection of random variables. Based on this definition, the expected value operator of birandom variable and chance measures of birandom event are further introduced. As a generalized scenario of stochastic programming, a spectrum of birandom programming models are developed to deal with birandom systems. To solve the proposed models, birandom simulations are presented and then a hybrid intelligent algorithm is designed by embedding neural networks into genetic algorithm. Finally, some numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:Birandom variable is a generalization of random variable, which is defined as a. measurable function from a probability space to the set of random variables. In order to further explore the mathematical properties of birandom variable, this paper investigates several inequalities for birandom variables based on the chance measure and expected value operator, which are analogous to Holder's inequality, Minkowski inequality, Markov inequality, Chebyshev inequality and Jensen's inequality.

Abstract:This work starts from definition of randomness, the results of algorithmic randomness are analyzed from the perspective of application. Then, the source and nature of randomness is explored, and the relationship between infinity and randomness is found. The properties of randomness are summarized from the perspective of interaction between systems, that is, the set composed of sequences generated by randomness has the property of asymptotic completeness. Finally, the importance of randomness in AI research is emphasized.

Abstract:We define a notion of randomness for individual and collections of formal languages based on automatic martingales acting on sequences of words from some underlying domain. An automatic martingale bets if the incoming word belongs to the target language or not. Then randomness of both single languages and collections of languages is defined as a failure of automatic martingale to gain an unbounded capital by betting on the target language according to an incoming sequence of words, or a text. The randomness of formal languages turned out to be heavily dependent on the text. For very general classes of texts, any nonregular language happens to be random when considered individually. As for collections of languages, very general classes of texts permits nonrandomness of automatic families of languages only. On the other hand, an arbitrary computable language is be shown to be nonrandom under certain dynamic texts.

Abstract:Martin-Lof's definition of random sequences of cbits as those not belonging to any set of constructive zero Lebesgue measure is reformulated in the language of Algebraic Probability Theory. The adoption of the Pour-El Richards theory of computability structures on Banach spaces allows us to give a natural noncommutative extension of Martin-Lof's definition, characterizing the random elements of a chain Von Neumann algebra. In the particular case of the minimally informative noncommutative alphabet our definition reduces to the definition of a random sequence of qubits.

Abstract:A number of generalizations of stochastic and information-theoretic randomness are known in the literature. However, they are not compatible with handling meaning in vague and dynamic contexts of rough reasoning (and therefore explainable artificial intelligence and machine learning). In this research, new concepts of rough randomness that are neither stochastic nor based on properties of strings are introduced by the present author. Her concepts are intended to capture a wide variety of rough processes (applicable to both static and dynamic data), construct related models, and explore the validity of other machine learning algorithms. The last mentioned is restricted to soft/hard clustering algorithms in this paper. Two new computationally efficient algebraically-justified algorithms for soft and hard cluster validation that involve rough random functions are additionally proposed in this research. A class of rough random functions termed large-minded reasoners have a central role in these.

Abstract:Alice is a charismatic quantum cryptographer who believes her parties are unmissable; Bob is a (relatively) glamorous string theorist who believes he is an indispensable guest. To prevent possibly traumatic collisions of self-perception and reality, their social code requires that decisions about invitation or acceptance be made via a cryptographically secure variable bias coin toss (VBCT). This generates a shared random bit by the toss of a coin whose bias is secretly chosen, within a stipulated range, by one of the parties; the other party learns only the random bit. Thus one party can secretly influence the outcome, while both can save face by blaming any negative decisions on bad luck. We describe here some cryptographic VBCT protocols whose security is guaranteed by quantum theory and the impossibility of superluminal signalling, setting our results in the context of a general discussion of secure two-party computation. We also briefly discuss other cryptographic applications of VBCT.

Abstract:Although widely investigated and used in psychology, the concept of randomness is beset with philosophical and practical difficulties. In this paper, I propose a resolution to a long-standing problem in psychological research by arguing that the inability to comprehend and produce random behavior is not caused by a defect on the part of the observer but is a consequence of conceptual confusion. Randomness describes a state of high complexity which defies analysis and understanding. The well-known biases in predictive behavior (e.g. hot-hand and gambler’s fallacy) are not caused by the observers’ inability to comprehend randomness but reflect a natural pattern-seeking response to high-complexity situations. Further, I address the circularity at the heart of the randomness debate. Replacing randomness with complexity in psychology and cognitive science would eliminate many of the current problems associated with defining, investigating and using this elusive term.

Abstract:This expository paper advocates an approach to physics in which ``typicality" is identified with a suitable form of algorithmic randomness. To this end various theorems from mathematics and physics are reviewed. Their original versions state that some property F(x) holds for P-almost all x in X, where P is a probability measure on some space X. Their more refined (and typically more recent) formulations show that F(x) holds for all P-random x in X. The computational notion of P-randomness used here generalizes the one introduced by Martin-L"of in 1966 in a way now standard in algorithmic randomness. Examples come from probability theory, analysis, dynamical systems/ergodic theory, statistical mechanics, and quantum mechanics (especially hidden variable theories). An underlying philosophical theme, inherited from von Mises and Kolmogorov, is the interplay between probability and randomness, especially: which comes first?

Abstract:Random Boolean Networks (RBNs) model complex networks with numerous variables, serving as a tool for gene expression and genetic regulation modeling. RBNs exhibit phase transitions, contingent on node degrees. Given the significance of phase transitions in collective behaviors, the study explores the relationship between RBNs and actual living system networks, which also display critical behaviors. Notably, living systems exhibit such behaviors even beyond the predicted critical point in RBNs. This paper introduces a novel RBNs model incorporating a rewiring process for edge connections/disconnections. In contrast to prior studies, our model includes artificial genes occasionally adding self-loops and creating an instant and temporal lookup table. Consequently, our proposed model demonstrates the edge of chaos at higher node degrees. It serves as an abstract RBNs model generating noisy behaviors from internal agent processes without external parameter tuning.
