Abstract:Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy is successfully demonstrated in both one-and two-photon cases with surface modified, nanocrystalline silicon quantum dots in the context of bioimaging. The technique is further demonstrated in combination with Forster resonance energy transfer studies where the color of the nanoparticles is tuned by using organic dye acceptors directly conjugated onto the nanoparticle surface.

Abstract:A simple method for the synthesis of water-soluble and well-dispersed fluorescent DNA-dots under mild conditions is reported. The solution of DNA-dots shows blue fluorescence and the luminescence lifetime equals 2.74 ns, with a quantum yield up to 7.5%. It is attractive that DNA-dots can be used as an effective fluorescent probe for the detection of iron ions with relatively good selectivity and sensitivity in an aqueous solution as well as in biological imaging applications.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) usually refer to very small nanoparticles of only few nanometers in size. The optical and electronic properties of QDs differ from those of larger particles. QDs will emit light of specific frequencies if electricity or light is applied to them, and these frequencies can be precisely tuned by changing the dots' size, shape, and material, giving rise to many applications. In this chapter, apart from the most common QDs, e.g., the cadmium (Cd)-containing semiconductor QDs, other types of QDs, including silver chalcogenide quantum dots, carbon quantum dots, silicon quantum dots, black phosphorus quantum dots, germanium quantum dots, and polymer dots are also introduced with an emphasis on their cancer therapy and imaging applications.

Abstract:In-situ, ultra-sensitive, real-time and dynamic acquisition of biochemical information of life is one of the pending key problems for bioscience. It is crucial to develop new related methodologies for life sciences. Fluorescent semiconductor quantum dots bring opportunities to the field, whose novel fluorescence properties are attracting more and more interest. However, some problems involved in quantum dot applications still need to be solved, including controllable solubilization of quantum dots, orientation of biomolecules on their surfaces, and the stability and specificity of quantum dot-labeled bioprobes etc. This review comments briefly on the labeling technique based on quantum dots, construction of quantum dot-labeled bioprobes and their applications in biomedical fields.

Abstract:Quantum dots are tiny light-emitting particles on the nanometer scale. They are emerging as a new class of biological labels with properties and applications that are not available with traditional organic dyes and fluorescent proteins. Their novel properties such as improved brightness, resistance against photobleaching, and multicolor light emission, have opened new possibilities for ultrasensitive chemical analysis and cellular imaging. In this Research Highlight article , we discuss the unique optical properties of semiconductor quantum dots, surface chemistry and bioconjugation, current applications in bioanalytical chemistry and cell biology, and future research directions.

Abstract:One of the fastest moving and most exciting interfaces of nanotechnology is the use of quantum dots (QDs) in biology. The unique optical properties of QDs make them appealing as in vivo and in vitro fluorophores in a variety of biological investigations, in which traditional fluorescent labels based on organic molecules fall short of providing long-term stability and simultaneous detection of multiple signals. The ability to make QDs water soluble and target them to specific biomolecules has led to promising applications in cellular labelling, deep-tissue imaging, assay labelling and as efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer donors. Despite recent progress, much work still needs to be done to achieve reproducible and robust surface functionalization and develop flexible bioconjugation techniques. In this review, we look at current methods for preparing QD bioconjugates as well as presenting an overview of applications. The potential of QDs in biology has just begun to be realized and new avenues will arise as our ability to manipulate these materials improves.

Abstract:Some representative preparation methods for quantum dots,which include precipitation,sol-gel,solvo-thermal method,the application in the biomedicine,material-science,etc were summarized in this paper.Quantum Dots can also be called semiconductor nanocrystal.It consists of Ⅱ-Ⅵ or Ⅲ-Ⅴ cluster elements,and a kind of nanocrystal with the dimension of 1～100nm.It has the properties of stability and dissolubility.Present,semiconductor quantum dots have received more and more attention in different fields.Their content not only relates to physics and chemistry but also already becomes an cross-subject.As a streamlined fluorescence material,they have many advantages compared to traditional organic dye,and the abundant color is the most virtue.They can be used as fluorescence probe in the organism system.Beacause of these excellent opitics characteristics,quantum dots have wide application in biochemistry,molecular biology,drug screening and so on.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) are a kind of quasi-zero-dimensional semiconductor nanocrystal, with a radius smaller than or close to their exciton Bohr radius. In 1977, Katzschmann observed the anomalous luminescence of particles with 1-5 nm size composed of II-VI family elements and proposed a relationship between band gap and particle size.1 This is the earliest report about QDs and quantum size effect. In the early 1980s, Elimov, Efros and Brus did a great deal of pioneering work on the quantum size effect in semiconductor nanocrystals.2-4 In 1986, Reed named the nanocrystals with quantum size effect and zero degree of freedom as quantum dot.5 During the 1990s, QDs attracted more attentions and developed rapidly. Importantly, Bawendi produced QDs with uniform size and shape,6 and Guyot-Sionnest obtained strongly luminescent cadmium selenide/zinc sulfide (CdSe/ZnS) QDs by capping CdSe QDs with ZnS,7 which are the first core-shell QDs. Production of high-quality QDs greatly promoted the application of this new type of materials. In 1998, Nie and Alivisatos transferred QDs from oil phase to aqueous phase and conjugated them to biomolecules to prepare fluorescent probes for imaging cellular structures.8,9 They unprecedentedly introduced QDs to biological fields, opening a new chapter for QD development.

Abstract:Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have received significant attention as unique photoluminescent materials for biological imaging and sensing. Charge transfer (CT) modulation of QD emission has recently emerged as a promising detection modality in these applications; however, much still remains unknown about the mechanism through which an electron or hole transfers from a QD exciton to a redox active moiety in a bioconjugate construct. Here, we highlight the utility and challenges of CT for QD-based biosensing, particularly in comparison to Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), and summarize the current understanding of this process, which is situated at the intersection between biological and photovoltaic research with QDs.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) are a group of semiconducting nanomaterials with unique optical and electronic properties. They have distinct advantages over traditional fluorescent organic dyes in chemical and biological studies in terms of tunable emission spectra, signal brightness, photostability, and so forth. Currently, themajor type of QDs is the heavymetal-containing II-IV, IV-VI, or III-V QDs. Silicon QDs and conjugated polymer dots have also been developed in order to lower the potential toxicity of the fluorescent probes for biological applications. Aqueous solubility is the common problem for all types of QDs when they are employed in the biological researches, such as in vitro and in vivo imaging. To circumvent this problem, ligand exchange and polymer coating are proven to be effective, besides synthesizing QDs in aqueous solutions directly. However, toxicity is another big concern especially for in vivo studies. Ligand protection and core/shell structure can partly solve this problem. With the rapid development of QDs research, new elements and new morphologies have been introduced to this area to fabricate more safe and efficient QDs for biological applications.
