Abstract:Ni-based superalloys rely on high volume fractions of L12 ordered γ′ phase precipitates for strength against creep deformation at elevated temperatures. However, under certain conditions dislocations existing in the FCC γ matrix may enter the L12 γ′ phase in pairs. The shear motion of different combinations of dislocation pairs creates different planar defects in the γ′ phase, including anti-phase boundaries (APB) or stacking faults. The formation of an APB requires the shear distortion associated with an a/2〈110〉 dislocation and the formation of a stacking fault requires the shear distortion associated with a k〈112〉 dislocation. Given that the native dislocations in FCC structure are a/2〈110〉, the formation mechanism of k〈112〉 dislocations remains to be clarified. Different mechanisms have been suggested for the formation of stacking faults in the γ′ phase in the literature. In this study, the shearing motions of various partial dislocation pairs and the planar defects formed in the γ′ phase were investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and the mechanisms were analyzed in terms of their crystallographic and energetic implications.
The Application of in Situ TEM on the Grain Boundary Brittleness of Precipitation-Strengthened Ni-based Superalloys: Recent Progress and Perspective

Abstract:Due to their superior strength and oxidation resistance at high temperatures, precipitation-strengthened Ni-based superalloys are widely used in load-bearing hot components in energy generation systems, such as gas/steam engines in aircraft or power plants. However, brittleness originating from a grain boundary (GB) in a certain temperature range is one of the greatest deadlocks, which desperately restricts their thermal-mechanical processing capabilities and also industrial applications. Experimental and theoretical investigations of the origin of GB brittleness with aims to overcome it still attract many research efforts in the high-temperature material field. It is desirable to understand the GB embrittlement mechanism by dynamically investigating the entire GB cracking process in real time under stress/temperature combination, which might be hardly revealed by a traditional experiment on precipitation strength/theoretical technologies. Current advances in high-temperature mechanical testing systems, which can be operated in a transmission electron microscope (TEM), provide unique opportunities for in situ exploration of the mechanistic origins of GB brittleness of superalloys with the resolution up to an atomic scale. Here, we first briefly give an overview of the phenomenon and current understanding on GB brittleness, followed by introducing the state-of-art techniques in an in situ TEM/mechanical testing system (MTS). In the end, we will also discuss the potential application of the in situ TEM/MTS on GB brittleness and a perspective overlook.

Abstract:Using the advantage of phase field crystal model in microstructure evolution, we simulated the details of two-dimensional triangular phase on atomic scale and diffusion time scale. The results show that the annihilation process of grain boundaries can be divided into three stages. The energy changes of the system at different stages are accurately calculated and the process is quantitatively analyzed. By comparing the atomic density distributions at different temperatures and orientation angles, it is shown that the grain boundary is sensitive to temperature. Within the range of low-angle, the increase of orientation angle inhibits the occurrence of annihilation and decreases the grain boundary migration rate. Under the applied stress, the orientation angle has a certain response relationship with the yield strength of the material. This work has some practical significance in the influence of microstructure on the mechanical properties of materials.

Abstract:Grain boundaries have long been of utmost importance in the research and application of single-crystal superalloys. However, there are still many unsolved mysteries regarding the understanding of grain boundaries throughout the solidification process. The work focuses on investigating the formation, the evolution, and the disappearance of low-angle grain boundaries, including subgrain boundaries. The findings show that the low-angle grain boundaries and subgrain boundaries in various dendritic arrays exhibit morphological variances and different development processes. The subgrain boundaries in the aligned array appear to be straight, where irregularly fine-grained γ' precipitates have formed. In contrast, low-angle grain boundaries show a curved and sawtooth-like structure in misaligned arrays. The γ' precipitates locating in the region are regularly long strips. The generation of grain boundaries is a result of the adjustment in dendritic spacing, where the influence of solute leads to dendrite deflection. The misorientation of grain boundary is constantly changing in response to dynamic changes in dendrite spacing. The low-angle grain boundaries eventually dissolve as the dendritic array evolves. This study enriches understanding of the interplay between dendrite arrays and grain boundaries, offering theoretical insights into the evolutionary patterns of grain boundaries within single-crystal superalloys.

Abstract:In this paper, molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the structure of Ni-based single superalloys with a {100} Ni/Ni3Al grain boundary. Tw o differe nt initial models are relaxed at 300K using Finnis-Sinclair-type potential. Our simulations reveal that the misfit energy due to the difference of their lattice constants is released not by long-range lattice misfit but by forming dislocati ons in local regions. Due to the surrounding differences of Ni3Al pha se in Ni-based phase, the dislocations formed are different.
Computational approach to grain boundary segregation engineering of nickel-base superalloys

Abstract:Grain boundary (GB) strengthening elements, such as B, C, and Zr have been added in small amounts to nickel-base superalloys. However, their strengthening effects have not been quantified and no specific design principles for GB chemistry have been reported. In this study, we propose a practical computational approach for the GB segregation engineering of nickel-base superalloys. Considering the partitioning of alloying elements into coexisting phases (strengthening phases, carbides, etc.), the equilibrium composition of a high-angle GB was computed for several nickel-base superalloys using a calculation of phase diagrams database. The computational results showed that B and Mo were enriched at the GB in most of the investigated alloys. The creep rupture strengths of the investigated alloys were predicted using the computed GB composition as a regression model feature. The regression coefficients for the features confirm that B segregation at the GB has a non-negligible strengthening effect on nickel-base superalloys.

Abstract:By the use of a first principles density functional theory, two kinds of models, namely the Rice-Wang thermodynamics model and the Seah quasi-chemical model, are employed to evaluate the embrittling tendency of a grain boundary (GB) due to the 3d element segregation. The first principles method based on those two models is appropriate for calculating the chemical and structural relaxation contributions to the changes of GB cohesion with the 3d segregants. The effects of the 3d transition elements, such as Ti, V, Cr and Mn, on a stable fcc Fe Sigma 11 [1 (1) over bar0]/(11 (3) over bar) GB are studied and the difference between these two models is interpreted. When the chemical and the structural relaxation effects are taken into account, the calculated results for these two models are coincident for most of the elements studied, except for chromium. After analysing their chemical bonding in detail, we find that this discrepancy may be attributable to a lower susceptibility of the Seah model to the bonding anisotropy caused by Cr in the GB. It is proposed that the Seah model should be prudently used for some elements, especially those lying in the middle of a transition period.

Abstract:Intermediate temperature embrittlement (ITE) exists widely in Ni-based superalloys, which seriously restricts the processing and service properties of alloys. The ITE of a Ni-based wrought superalloy GH4065A was eliminated by long-term aging treatment. With the extension of aging time, the fracture characteristics of the alloy changed from intergranular fracture to dimple. EDS and AES observations showed that the intergranular diffusion and segregation of W and Mo elements increased the grain boundary strength of the long-term aging alloy. Intergranular M 6 C carbide precipitates have also been shown to be beneficial for plastic deformation.

Abstract:In situ study on the interaction betweenγ/γ′phase boundary and interfacial dislocations in nickel based single crystalline superalloy in a transmission electron microscope ( TEM) was carried out on a heating holder. The results obtained during heating and cooling process indicated that migration of phase boundary can change the location and shape of the interfacial dislocations but has no effects on its density. In addition, the growth of γ′phase could be hindered by the elastic field of interfacial dislocations. This would result in a different growth rate of the γ′precipitate and grooves on the phase boundary.

Abstract:Phase transformation during annealing in rapidly-solidified Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and transmission Kikuchi diffraction technologies. The results show that primary eta-Mg(Zn,Al,Cu)2 phase is formed at grain boundaries and inside grains during spray forming. During annealing above 300 degrees C, the primary eta phase particles at GBs are inclined to be decomposed as newly-oriented nano eta phase particles via lattice rotation at eta/Al interface and directly transformed to S-(Al2CuMg) phase while those inside grains are directly dissolved. Nanoscale crystallographic orientation relationships between newly-formed eta phase and transformed S phase at eta/Al interface are revealed. Due to the phase transformation from eta to S, the impact toughness of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy is significantly dete-riorated because these S phase particles cannot be fully dissolved by solution treatment and inevitably increase brittle fracture sensibility. This finding provides new insights into designing the phase transformation in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys for toughness enhancement.

Abstract:Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS) were used to study the chemical composition and bonding of grain boundary in CrMo steel. The bonding change in grain boundary of commercial CrMo steel is induced by P element segregation. The normalized 3d occupancies of states of irons both in bulk and at grain boundary were calculated according to the EELS spectra and they were related to the change in the chemical compositions of grain boundaries and the fracture mode. If the grain boundary has a higher occupancy of 3d state of iron than the bulk, the sample tends to have intergranular fracture, while if the grain boundary has almost the same occupancy of 3d state of iron as the bulk, the sample tends to have transgranular fracture.

Abstract:The strength enhancement usually increases its susceptibility to hydrogen (H) embrittlement in steel materials. However, the atomic-level mechanisms by which solutes influence hydrogen behavior at grain boundaries (GBs) remain incompletely understood. To address this gap, first-principles calculation was utilized to analyze the interactions between 25 different solutes and H at the Σ5(310) GB of body-centered cubic (BCC) iron. This study focused on how these solutes affect H segregation and their role in mitigating H-induced GB embrittlement, thereby elucidating the mechanisms of solute-H interactions at GBs. The results show that elements such as Cr, Mn, Ni, Zr, Nb, Mo, W, and Re not only reduce H segregation at GBs, but also effectively alleviate H-induced GB embrittlement. Furthermore, first-principles calculation tensile tests (FPCTT) simulations were employed to investigate the effect of the H segregation behavior at GB on uniaxial tensile strain, shedding light on the fundamental processes of bond break and crack initiation at GBs. The present work provides deeper insights into the mechanisms of GB embrittlement and offers strategic guidance for designing steel materials with enhanced H embrittlement resistance.

Abstract:Microstructural features of a geometrically closed packed hexagonal η-Ni3(Ti, Al) phase precipitated in a long-term-aged Ni-based superalloy are characterised using various kinds of transmission electron microscope (TEM) techniques. The defect features in the η grain interior are clearly revealed at the atomic scale. A nano-sized γ′ phase is found at the defect regions of the micro-sized η phase. The interior γ′ phase keeps a good orientation relationship (OR) of (1 1 1)γ′//(0 0 0 1)η and [1 0]γ′//[2 0]η with the η-Ni3(Ti, Al) phase. However, there is no definitive OR between η-Ni3(Ti, Al) grains and the surrounding matrix. By means of first-principle calculations, we reveal that a symmetrical interfacial feature between γ′ and η corresponds to a lower energy state.
Misorientation Related Microstructure at the Grain Boundary in A Nickel-Based Single Crystal Superalloy

Abstract:The mechanical properties of nickel-based single crystal superalloys deteriorate with increasing misorientation, thus the finished product rate of the casting of single crystal turbine airfoils may be reduced due to the formation of grain boundaries especially when the misorientation angle exceeds to some extent. To this day, evolution of the microstructures at the grain boundaries with misorientation and the relationship between the microstructures and the mechanical properties are still unclear. In this work a detailed characterization of the misorientation related microstructure at the grain boundary in DD6 single crystal superalloy has been carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques; the elemental distribution at the grain boundaries has been analyzed by energy dispersive (EDS) X-ray mapping; and the effect of precipitation of μ phases at the grain boundary on the mechanical property has been evaluated by finite element calculation. It is shown that the proportion of γ phase at the grain boundaries decreases, while the proportion of γ′ phase at the grain boundaries increases with increasing misorientation; the μ phase is precipitated at the grain boundaries when the misorientation angle exceeds about 10° and thus it could lead to a dramatic deterioration of the mechanical properties, as well as that the enrichment of Re and W gradually disappears as the misorientation angle increases. All these factors may result in the degradation of the mechanical properties at the grain boundaries as the misorientation increases. Furthermore, the finite element calculation confirms that precipitation of μ phases at the grain boundary is responsible for the significant deterioration of the mechanical properties when the misorientation exceeds about 10°. This work provides a physical imaging of the microstructure for understanding the relationship between the mechanical properties and the misorientation of the grain boundaries in the single crystal superalloy. Based on our study we hope that we can offer some scientific basis for further improvement of the nickel-based single crystal superalloys.

Abstract:Grain-boundary degradation via liquid-metal embrittlement (LME) is a prominent and long-standing failure process in next generation advanced high-strength steels. Here we reveal, well ahead of the crack tip, the presences of nano-scale grains of intermetallic phases in Zn-infiltrated but uncracked grain boundaries with scanning- and 4D transmission electron microscopy. Instead of the often-reported Zn-rich Fe-Zn intermetallics, the nano-scale phase in the uncracked infiltrated grain boundaries is identified as the Γ -phase, and its presence reveals the local enhancement of strain heterogeneities in the grain boundary network. Based on these observations, we argue that intermetallic phase formation is not occurring after cracking and subsequent liquid Zn infiltration but is instead one of the primary nanoscopic drivers for grain-boundary weakening and crack initiation. These findings shift the focus of LME from micro- and meso-scale crack investigations to the very early stages immediately following Zn diffusion, after which secondary phase nucleation and growth emerge as the root-cause for failure.

Abstract:The grain boundary brittleness widely exists in structural and functional materials that possess covalent bonds. Particularly, toughening the grain boundaries and simultaneously retaining the functionalities are of critical importance for functional materials. In this work, we focus on the Heulser-type Ni-Mn-X (X=Ga, In, Sn, Sb, Al, Ti) shape memory alloys, the severe grain boundary brittleness of which have hindered their developments over the past more than two decades. By performing two-step heat treatment for a Cu alloyed Ni30Cu20Mn42.4Ga7.6 alloy, a unique dual-phase configuration with a small amount of thin layer (width less than 20 µm) of single crystalline γ phase just distributing along boundaries of the martensitic grains was formed at room temperature. As a result, the bulk polycrystalline samples could be compressed with the engineering strain up to 81 % without any cracks. More importantly, the tension deformation, which was previously rather difficult for bulk single-phase Ni-Mn-X alloys, was realized in the dual-phase Ni30Cu20Mn42.4Ga7.6 alloy with a tensile strain up to 13 %, exhibiting high plasticity. Simultaneously, remarkable shape memory effect of 3.2 % under the tension condition was achieved via the martensitic transformation. Microstructure and fracture surface analysis revealed the “glue effect” of the γ phase. The high plasticity of the Ni30Cu20Mn42.4Ga7.6 alloy originated from the cooperative deformation of the martensite phase and the γ phase. This work supplies an attractive strategy of grain boundary engineering to toughen brittle functional materials.

The results show that primary η-Mg(Zn,Al,Cu) 2 phase is formed at grain boundaries and inside grains during spray forming. During annealing above 300 °C, the primary η phase particles at GBs are inclined to be decomposed as newly-oriented nano η phase particles via lattice rotation at η/Al interface and directly transformed to S-(Al 2 CuMg) phase while those inside grains are directly dissolved. Nanoscale crystallographic orientation relationships between newly-formed η phase and transformed S phase at η/Al interface are revealed. Due to the phase transformation from η to S, the impact toughness of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy is significantly deteriorated because these S phase particles cannot be fully dissolved by solution treatment and inevitably increase brittle fracture sensibility. This finding provides new insights into designing the phase transformation in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys for toughness enhancement.
