Abstract:We analyze a simple model for degenerate four wave mixing, introduced by Savage and Walls. In the resonant case, the system exhibits a phase instability when the pump intensity is increased well beyond the threshold for generation of the signal mode. Still in the resonant configuration, we calculate the amplitude and phase squeezing spectra both for the signal and the pump mode. In the signal (pump) mode, the squeezing becomes especially large when the signal (pump) mode is much more damped than the pump (signal) mode. The signal field can exhibit both phase and amplitude squeezing, in distinct domains of the parameter space. On the other hand, the pump field can show squeezing only in the amplitude quadrature component. In general, the model exhibits sizable squeezing over very extended regions of the parameter space.

Abstract:The effect of a squeezed vacuum on the optical bistable and multistable behaviour of a system of N three-level atoms is investigated, where the quantum interference between the atomic transition paths is considered. It is shown that the squeezed vacuum can profoundly affect the output field of this system. A strong squeezed vacuum can lead to multistable behaviour, even in the case where the cooperation parameter C is so small that the input output relationship curve is monotone in the absence of the squeezed vacuum. The optical multistability is most significant when the quantum interference is perfect. The bistability and multistability can be controlled by the squeezing photon number and the strength of the two-photon correlation.

Abstract:We present a quantum nonlinear model of two-wave mixing in a lossless photorefractive medium. A set of equations describing the quantum nonlinear coupling for the field operators is obtained. It is found that, to the second power term, the commutation relationship is maintained. The expectation values for the photon number concur with those of the classical electromagnetic theory when the initial intensities of the two beams are strong. We also calculate the quantum fluctuations of the two beams initially in the coherent state. With an appropriate choice of phase, quadrature squeezing or number state squeezing can be produced.

Abstract:Entanglement and quantum squeezing have wide applications in quantum technologies due to their non-classical characteristics. Here we study entanglement and quantum squeezing in an open spin-optomechanical system, in which a Rabi model (a spin coupled to the mechanical oscillator) is coupled to an ancillary cavity field via a quadratic optomechanical coupling. We find that their performances can be significantly modulated via the photon of the ancillary cavity, which comes from photon-dependent spin-oscillator coupling and detuning. Specifically, a fully switchable spin-oscillator entanglement can be achieved, meanwhile a strong mechanical squeezing is also realized. Moreover, we study the environment-induced decoherence and dissipation, and find that they can be mitigated by increasing the number of photons. This work provides an effective way to manipulate entanglement and quantum squeezing and to suppress decoherence in the cavity quantum electrodynamics with a quadratic optomechanics.
Optical Bistability in a Low Photon-Density Regime

Abstract:We give a microscopic description of the optical bistability, where the transmission coefficient has two different values as a function of input light intensity, and the system exhibits a discontinuous jump with a hysteresis loop. We developed an efficient numerical algorithm to treat the quantum master equation for hybridized systems of many photons and a large number of two-level atoms. By using this method, we characterize the bistability from the viewpoint of eigenmodes and eigenvalues of the time evolution operator of the quantum master equation. We investigate the optical bistability within the low photon-density regime, where the hybridization of photon and atom degrees of freedom occurs and the resonance spectrum has a double peak structure. We compared it with the standard optical bistability between the low photon-density regime and the high photon-density regime, where the photons can be treated as a classical electromagnetic field and the resonance spectrum has a single peak structure. We discuss the steady-state properties of the optical bistability: dependencies of the photon number density on the intensity and the double peak structure of the photon number distribution inside the bistable region. As for the dynamical properties, we find that the relaxation timescale shows an exponential growth with the system size, and reveal how the hysteresis loop of the optical bistability depends on the size of the system and the sweeping rate of the driving amplitude. Finally, by investigating the effects of detuning frequency of the input field, we clarify the characteristic properties of the present optical bistability within the low photon-density regime, which are qualitatively different from the standard optical bistable phenomena.

Abstract:Four-wave mixing process (FWM) in the non-degenerate category can be produced by the interaction of the radiation field with the third-order nonlinear optical media. In our present paper, to describe the non-degenerate four-wave mixing process we have used the fully quantum mechanical bosonic Hamiltonian. Heisenberg's equations of motion for various modes involving pump, signal and idler are constructed. The corresponding differential equations are coupled and nonlinear. Due to non-linearity, the solution of these equations in closed set analytical form is not possible. To solve these coupled nonlinear differential equations we use the Sen-Mandal perturbative technique. Interestingly, this approach provides a broader and more general set of solutions that may be applicable across a wider range of conditions. The Sen-Mandal perturbative technique allows a more general solution that can result in a more accurate and general representation of the system that is more advantageous than the well-known short-time approximation method. The obtained solutions have been used to study the intermodal entanglement, normal order anti-bunching and normal order squeezing for various modes under the non-degenerate four-wave mixing process. The non-degenerate FWM is one of the processes for generating entanglement, squeezing and anti-bunching etc.

Abstract:Entangled multi-spatial-mode fields have interesting applications in quantum information, such as parallel quantum information protocols, quantum computing, and quantum imaging. We study the use of a nondegenerate four-wave mixing process in rubidium vapor at 795 nm to demonstrate generation of quantum-entangled images. Owing to the lack of an optical resonator cavity, the four-wave mixing scheme generates inherently multi-spatial-mode output fields. We have verified the presence of entanglement between the multi-mode beams by analyzing the amplitude difference and the phase sum noise using a dual homodyne detection scheme, measuring more than 4 dB of squeezing in both cases. This paper will discuss the quantum properties of amplifiers based on four-wave-mixing, along with the multi mode properties of such devices.

Bistability-assisted Mechanical Squeezing and Entanglement

Abstract:We propose a scheme to squeeze mechanical motion and to entangle optical field with mechanical motion in an optomechanical system containing a parametric amplification. The scheme is based on optical bistability which emerges in the system for a strong enough driving field. By considering the steady state's lower branch of the bistability, the system shows weak entanglement and almost no mechanical squeezing. When the steady state is on the upper branch of the bistable shape, both squeezing and entanglement are greatly enhanced. Specifically, the entanglement shows three degrees of magnitude enhancement. However, this giant entanglement is fragile against decoherence and thermal fluctuation. Regarding the mechanical squeezing, it reaches the standard quantum limit (SQL) in the upper branch of the bistability. Our proposal provides a way to improve quantum effects in optomechanical systems by taking advantage of nonlinearities. This scheme can be realized in similar systems such as superconducting microwave, and hybrid optomechanical systems.

Abstract:Number-state expansions are derived for the squeezed states produced by four-wave mixing (modulation interaction and phase conjugation) in fibers. These expansions are valid for arbitrary pump-induced coupling and dispersion-induced mismatch coefficients. To illustrate their use, formulas are derived for the associated field-quadrature and photon-number variances and correlations.

Properties of Two-Mode Quadrature Squeezing from Four-wave Mixing in Rubidium Vapor

Abstract:We present a study of homodyne measurements of two-mode, vacuum-seeded, quadrature-squeezed light generated by four-wave mixing in warm rubidium vapor. Our results reveal that the vacuum squeezing can extend down to measurement frequencies of less than 1 Hz, and the squeezing bandwidth, similar to the seeded intensity-difference squeezing measured in this system, reaches up to approximately 20 MHz for typical pump parameters. By dividing the squeezing bandwidth into smaller frequency bins, we show that different sideband frequencies represent independent sources of two-mode squeezing. Such frequency bins may provide useful qumodes for quantum information processing experiments. We also investigate the impact of group velocity delays on the correlations in the system.

Abstract:The interaction strength of an oscillator to a qubit grows with the oscillator's vacuum field fluctuations. The well known degenerate parametric oscillator has revived interest in the regime of strongly detuned squeezing, where its eigenstates are squeezed Fock states. Owing to these amplified field fluctuations, it was recently proposed that squeezing this oscillator would dynamically boost qubit-photon interactions. In a superconducting circuit experiment, we observe a two-fold increase in the dispersive interaction between a qubit and an oscillator at 5.5 dB of squeezing, demonstrating in-situ dynamical control of qubit-photon interactions. This work initiates the experimental coupling of oscillators of squeezed photons to qubits, and cautiously motivates their dissemination in experimental platforms seeking enhanced interactions.

Superposition of macroscopically squeezed states with enhanced squeezing in cavity optomechanical system at single-photon level

Abstract: We propose an efficient approach to generate the superposed macroscopically squeezed states with enhanced squeezing in a two-mode optomechanical system. This can be achieved by introducing a sinusoidal modulation to either the cavity frequencies or the coupling strengths between two cavity modes. The squeezement of the oscillator can be significantly enhanced to 12.16 dB with single photon, once the relative ratio of coupling strength is optimized under proper conditions. Further enhanced squeezing can be obtained by carefully adjusting the system parameters. In terms of the Wigner quasi-probability distribution, we show the squeezed error ellipses and interference fringes of the Yurke-Stoler-type squeezed states, denoting the squeezing and superposition properties. Our state generation scheme show reliable performance and robust resistance to finite environmental fluctuations, which implies applications for both fundamental interest and practical value.

Abstract:We study the behaviour of the second-order correlation function in a double-cavity optomechanical system, and a degenerate optical parametric amplifier is placed in each cavity. The first cavity is additionally driven by a weak classical laser field. The occurrence of strong photon antibunching effect in these two coupled cavities is observed. For suitable values of optomechanical coupling strength as well as photon hopping process, the system can exhibit a very strong photon antibunching effect. Our study also shows that the unconventional photon blockade occurs in both coupling, i.e. the weak coupling and the strong coupling regimes as compared to the conventional photon blockade which occurs only in the strong coupling regime. We get a very strong photon antibunching effect under the unconventional photon blockade mechanism than the conventional photon blockade mechanism. Our study can be also used for the generation of single photon in coupled nonlinear optomechanical systems.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate optical bistability/multistability and transmission spectrum in a quadratically coupled optomechanical system consisting of an optical cavity with quantum dot molecules inside it. The optomechanical cavity is driven by a strong pump laser and a weak probe field. We observed that the optical tristability in the presence of quadratic optomechanical coupling transforms into optical bistability in the absence of quadratic optomechanical coupling. We further investigate this hybrid system’s absorption and dispersion spectrum by changing the various control parameters like quadratic optomechanical coupling and intensity of strong pump laser field. In addition, we observed the superluminal effect of the transmitted probe field by calculating the group velocity index of light, which is influenced by system parameters. Such results may be useful for designing all-optical switching and novel quantum photonic devices.

Abstract:We utilize multilevel atoms trapped in a driven resonant optical cavity to produce scalable multi-mode squeezed states for quantum sensing and metrology. While superradiance or collective dissipative emission by itself has been typically a detrimental effect for entanglement generation in optical cavities, in the presence of additional drives it can also be used as an entanglement resource. In a recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 132, 033601 (2024)], we described a protocol for the dissipative generation of two-mode squeezing in the dark state of a six-level system with only one relevant polarization. There we showed that up to two quadratures can be squeezed. Here, we develop a generalized analytic treatment to calculate the squeezing in any multilevel system where atoms can collectively decay by emitting light into two polarization modes in a cavity. We show that in this more general system up to four spin squeezed quadratures can be obtained. We study how finite-size effects constrain the reachable squeezing, and analytically compute the scaling with $N$. Our findings are readily testable in current optical cavity experiments with alkaline-earth-like atoms.

Abstract:Squeezed light is a quantum resource that can improve the sensitivity of optical measurements. However, existing sources of squeezed light generally require high powers and are not amenable to portability. Here we theoretically investigate an alternative technique for generating squeezing using degenerate four-wave-mixing in atomic vapors. We show that by minimizing excess noise, this technique has the potential to generate measurable squeezing with low powers attainable by a small diode laser. We suggest experimental techniques to reduce excess noise and employ this alternative nonlinear optical process to build a compact, low-power source of squeezed light.
