Abstract:In this paper, using the concept of the basic invariant, we study optical propagation in a nonhomogeneous medium and obtain the squeezed states for the system. These should be of importance for the discussion of the propagation of waves with finite width.

Abstract:A new concept of the basic invariants is introduced. With the help of the basic invariants, we construct the stable squeezed state for a system with time-dependent Hamiltonian. This state is the eigenstate of a basic invariant. Then the basic invariants are used to obtain a general form of invariants which in turn can be applied to discuss the high-n squeezed state.

Abstract:The problem of time evolution and squeezed states of the generalized quadratic time-dependent harmonic oscillator was studied by use of the time-evolution operator approach. Then, the squeezed states and high-n squeezed states of the driven harmonic oscillator with strongly pulsating mass were constructed. Finally, the paper shows how the squeezed-coherent states and high-n squeezed-coherent states, which preserve the minimum uncertainty condition, can be generated.

Abstract:We obtain exact spatiotemporal similaritons to a (3+1)-dimensional inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrodinger equation, which describes the propagation of optical pulses in a cubic-quintic nonlinearity medium with distributed dispersion and gain. A one-to-one correspondence between such self-similar waves and solutions of the elliptic equation is found when a certain compatibility condition is satisfied. Based on exact solutions, we discuss evolutional behaviors of self-similar cnoidal waves and chirped similaritons in two kind of typical soliton control systems. Moreover, the comparison between chirped similaritons and chirp-free solitons is given.

Abstract:The similarity transformation between the inhomogeneous (n+1)-dimensional generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) and the constant-coefficient NLSE in optical fibers is constructed with some constraints for the parameters of the medium. The exact balance between the dispersion/diffraction, nonlinearity and the gain/loss produces self-similar waves (similaritons). As an example, we investigate the nonlinear tunneling effect of flat-top similariton. The results show that the effects of dispersion barrier and well for the similariton are similar to that of nonlinear well and barrier, respectively.

Abstract:Number-state expansions are derived for the squeezed states produced by four-wave mixing (modulation interaction and phase conjugation) in fibers. These expansions are valid for arbitrary pump-induced coupling and dispersion-induced mismatch coefficients. To illustrate their use, formulas are derived for the associated field-quadrature and photon-number variances and correlations.

Abstract:We introduce the states D(z)a(+) S(r)\ 0) and examine their properties. Such states are checked to be complete vectors via the IWOP (Integration Within an Ordered Product of operators) technique. We find larger-scale macroscopic oscillations of photon distribution after the squeezed vacuum states being excited and displaced. On contrary to the bunching photons of the squeezed vacuum states, as the displacing parameter \ z \ and the excitation number m are both small, photons coherence can exhibit antibunching effect. The quasi-probability distribution functions (Husimi Q(alpha, alpha*) function and Wigner W(q, p) function) are derived and their dependences on the three parameters (z, m, r) are discussed. The Wigner function obviously displays their nonclassical feature.

Abstract:We analyze a simple model for degenerate four wave mixing, introduced by Savage and Walls. In the resonant case, the system exhibits a phase instability when the pump intensity is increased well beyond the threshold for generation of the signal mode. Still in the resonant configuration, we calculate the amplitude and phase squeezing spectra both for the signal and the pump mode. In the signal (pump) mode, the squeezing becomes especially large when the signal (pump) mode is much more damped than the pump (signal) mode. The signal field can exhibit both phase and amplitude squeezing, in distinct domains of the parameter space. On the other hand, the pump field can show squeezing only in the amplitude quadrature component. In general, the model exhibits sizable squeezing over very extended regions of the parameter space.

Abstract:We reveal that classical light diffraction in arrays of specially modulated coupled optical waveguides can simulate the quantum process of two-mode squeezing in nonlinear media, with the waveguide mode amplitudes corresponding the signal and idler photon numbers. The whole Fock space is mapped by a set of arrays, where each array represents the states with a fixed difference between the signal and idler photon numbers. We demonstrate a critical transition from photon number growth to Bloch oscillations with periodical revivals of an arbitrary input state, associated with an increase of the effective phase mismatch between the pump and the squeezed photons.

Abstract:Quantum-classical analogy refers to the fact that quantum and classical phenomena share a similar mathematical description and exhibit analogous behaviors, which has advanced optical frontiers. In this work, the mechanism of the squeezed state is incorporated into classical structured light, constructing a novel kind of structured light, termed the squeezed geometric beam, that is, the squeezed coherent state of geometric beams, and revealing a novel quantum-classical analogy between the noise of quantum squeezed state and the beam size of squeezed geometric beams, both evolving with the same squeezing parameter. The presented method provides an inspirational extensible framework to reveal more structured light analogies of quantum states. In addition, it is demonstrated in theory and experiment that thanks to the unveiled squeezing mechanism, the squeezed geometric beam as an information carrier can effectively lower the modal crosstalk, thus boosting the communication capacity of spatial mode multiplexing.

Abstract:We study an intense-short pulse propagation in a saturable cubic-quintic nonlinear media in the presence of nonlinear dispersion within the framework of an extended variational approach. We derive an effective equation for the pulse width and demonstrate how the saturation due to nonlinearity is achieved in presence of nonlinear dispersion. We find that the nonlinear dispersion can change the pulse width and induce motion in the system. The direction of induced motion depends on the sign of nonlinear dispersion. The pulse is energetically stable at an equilibrium width. A disturbance can, however, induce oscillation in pulse width, the frequency of which is always smaller due to nonlinear dispersion. We check dynamical stability by a direct numerical simulation.

Abstract:We present a quantum nonlinear model of two-wave mixing in a lossless photorefractive medium. A set of equations describing the quantum nonlinear coupling for the field operators is obtained. It is found that, to the second power term, the commutation relationship is maintained. The expectation values for the photon number concur with those of the classical electromagnetic theory when the initial intensities of the two beams are strong. We also calculate the quantum fluctuations of the two beams initially in the coherent state. With an appropriate choice of phase, quadrature squeezing or number state squeezing can be produced.

Abstract:We present a study of the generation of squeezed states through nonlinear three-wave mixing in media with an intensity-dependent index of refraction. In the semiclassical model, perfect squeezing for combination modes can be generated. Using the Fokker-Planck equation approach, the effects of pump (including squeezed pump) and loss are discussed. It is shown that the fluctuations of the pump place no fundamental limit to the degree of squeezing obtainable but losses do give an absolute limit.

Abstract:Studies on nonlinear optics are active, providing the applications in modulators, fiber lasers, optical sensors, etc. In this paper, we investigate an inhomogeneous reduced Maxwell–Bloch system, which could describe the ultra-short optical pulses through an inhomogeneous medium. N -fold Darboux transformation of that system is constructed via an existing Lax pair, where N is a positive integer. Generalized Darboux transformation of that system is obtained via a limit procedure. One- and two-soliton solutions of that system are determined with the aid of the N -fold Darboux transformation. The double-pole soliton solutions are derived via the generalized Darboux transformation. With respect to the electric field, microscopic polarization, phase information, and atomic inversion related to the inhomogeneous medium, the one soliton, interaction between the two solitons, and double-pole soliton are graphically depicted. Effects of the coefficients in that system on those solitons are shown via the trigonometric and linear functions.

Abstract:Quantum squeezed states of light characterized by a reduced quantum uncertainty with respect to one of the quadrature variables smaller than the uncertainty of the vacuum state (the standard quantum limit) play an important role in the current fundamental and applied research. The main information concerning the proprieties and manifestations of the squeezed states are presented. A concise review of the methods for obtaining and detecting the quantum squeezed light is performed; at that, a special attention is payed to fiber-optical schemas. The Kerr mechanism of squeezed state generation that is realized in various variants of fiber-optic systems is considered in detail. An experimental scheme of generation of polarization-squeezed states based on a nonlinear polarization-maintaining fiber is presented. Different factors that limit squeezing are considered.
Theory of Multimode Squeezed Light Generation in Lossy Media

Abstract:A unified theoretical approach to describe the properties of multimode squeezed light generated in a lossy medium is presented. This approach is valid for Markovian environments and includes both a model of discrete losses based on the beamsplitter approach and a generalized continuous loss model based on the spatial Langevin equation. For an important class of Gaussian states, we derive master equations for the second-order correlation functions and illustrate their solution for both frequency-independent and frequency-dependent losses. Studying the mode structure, we demonstrate that in a lossy environment no broadband basis without quadrature correlations between the different broadband modes exists. Therefore, various techniques and strategies to introduce broadband modes can be considered. We show that the Mercer expansion and the Williamson decomposition do not provide modes in which the maximal squeezing contained in the system can be measured. In turn, we find a new broadband basis that maximizes squeezing in the lossy system and present an algorithm to construct it.

Abstract:We experimentally and theoretically analyze the transmission of continuous-wave and pulsed squeezed vacuum through rubidium vapor under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. Frequency- and time-domain homodyne tomography is used to measure the quadrature noise and reconstruct the quantum states of the transmitted light. A simple theoretical model explains the spectrum and degradation of the transmitted squeezing with high precision.

Abstract:Abstract To achieve a high degree of quantum noise squeezing, nonlinear optical interaction process is often employed. Here, we propose to utilize quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs) and Fano resonances to enhance optical squeezing without nonlinearity. The theory of quantization for electromagnetic fields in the periodic nanostructure with dispersion and absorption has been developed by means of the Green’s function technique with the plane wave expansion method. The quasi-BICs and Fano resonances of radiation modes are realized by designing the photonic crystal slab structure. Based on these quasi-BICs and Fano resonances, we demonstrate that strong squeezed states can be realized by using the balanced homodyne detection scheme. The squeezing degree can be improved by more than 14 times when a weak squeezed states passes through the structure with quasi-BICs and Fano resonances. The advantage of this method is that it is not only efficient but also easy to implement because the nonlinear optical processes are not employed, which is very beneficial for the quantum information processing and precision metrology.

Analytic solution to the nonlinear generation of squeezed states in a thermal bath

Abstract:We model squeezed state generation in a lossy optical cavity in the presence of a thermal bath using the Lindblad master equation. We show that the exact solution is a squeezed thermal state, where thermal photons arise both from loss and from the thermal bath. We derive an exact, closed-form solution for the evolution of the quadrature uncertainty arising from pulsed degenerate spontaneous parametric down conversion in the cavity. We apply this solution under different pump conditions and show in detail how the thermal environment reduces quadrature squeezing as well as the second order coherence function.

Abstract:Abstract The present article deals with the propagation of inhomogeneous waves in an orthotropic viscoelastic medium. For chosen directions of propagation and a real finite inhomogeneity parameter, a complex slowness vector is specified to define the propagation of an inhomogeneous incident wave. Then, the reflection and transmission of plane waves at a plane interface between two orthotropic viscoelastic half-spaces are discussed. In this incidence, horizontal slowness determines the slowness vectors for all reflected and transmitted waves. For each reflected and transmitted wave, the corresponding slowness vector is resolved to define its phase direction, phase velocity and attenuation angle. Appropriate boundary conditions on this wave field determine the amplitude ratios for reflected and transmitted waves relative to the incident wave. The numerical examples are provided to show the effect of the inhomogeneity of the incident wave on the propagation characteristic as well as the reflection and transmission coefficients. The existence of homogeneous, inhomogeneous incident waves also is investigated.
