Abstract:Kondo lattice systems can exhibit unusual many-body behaviors that result from the interplay between onsite Kondo screening and intersite coupling. We used scanning tunneling microscopy to image the Kondo resonance in a nonconventional Kondo lattice formed by self-assembled oxygen (O-2) molecules, which are paramagnetic, on the gold reconstructed surface [Au(110)-1x2]. The interplay between the intermolecular coupling for molecules adsorbed along chains and the onsite Kondo effect leads to the coexistence of both local and nonlocal Kondo screening at the atomic level. The latter provides evidence for collective deconfinement of magnetization induced in Au, whereas the former shows local "hybridization" between the Kondo clouds of nearest-neighbor O-2 molecules.

Abstract:The mechanism of Kondo screening in strongly correlated molecules with several unpaired electrons on a metal surface is still under debate. Here, we provide a theoretical framework that rationalizes the emergence of Kondo screening involving several extended molecular orbitals with unpaired electrons. We introduce a perturbative model, which provides simple rules to identify the presence of antiferromagnetic spin-flip channels involving charged molecular multiplets responsible for Kondo screening. The Kondo regime is confirmed by numerical renormalization group calculations. In addition, we introduce the concept of Kondo orbitals as molecular orbitals associated with the Kondo screening process, which provide a direct interpretation of experimental $dI/dV$ maps of Kondo resonances. We demonstrate that this theoretical framework can be applied to different strongly correlated open-shell molecules on metal surfaces, obtaining good agreement with previously published experimental data.

Suppressed Kondo screening in two-dimensional altermagnets

Abstract:We have studied the Kondo effect of a spin-1/2 impurity coupled to a two-dimensional altermagnet host material. To attain the low-temperature many-body Kondo physics of the system, we have performed a numerical renormalization group calculations that allows us to access the spectral properties of the system at zero temperature. The impurity spectral function and the Kondo temperature were calculated for different set of parameters, including Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) and an external magnetic field. Interestingly, in the RSOC and altermagnetic fields, the hybridization function is spin independent, despite the characteristic broken time-reversal symmetry of the altermagnet. This is because the alternating sign of the spin splitting of the bands in the momentum space renders equal contributions for both spin components of the hybridization function. Our results demonstrate that, although the hybridization function is time-reversal symmetric, the Kondo temperature is substantially suppressed by the altermagnet coupling. Moreover, we have investigated the effect of an external magnetic field applied in the altermagnet along different directions. Interestingly, we observe an important restraining of the Kondo peak which depends strongly on the direction of the field. This anisotropic effect is, however, masked if strong Zeeman splitting takes place at the impurity, as it shatters the Kondo-singlet state.

Abstract:We report the electron dynamics of the recently discovered quasi-one-dimensional Kondo lattice compound CeCo2Ga8 by optical spectra measurements using polarized light. For an electric field along the c axis, the high-temperature Drude-like peak is found to split into two distinct components below the coherence temperature T*, including a narrower Drude-like peak at low frequencies characterizing the emergent heavy electron state with a large mass enhancement, and a midinfrared Lorentz-like peak originating from interband transitions across the hybridization gap. The splitting is, however, absent for an electric field along the perpendicular directions, suggesting that the hybridization only occurs along the c axis, although the high-temperature optical spectra from the background conduction electrons are isotropic. Our observations are in agreement with the resistivity data that show a broad maximum at around 20 K only along the c axis but which keep increasing with a lowering temperature below 50 K along the ab plane. Our work confirms the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the heavy electron physics in CeCo2Ga8 and establishes a direct correspondence between the bulk transport properties and microscopic electronic structures. It also pushes the previous observation of anisotropic coherence temperature in many heavy fermion compounds to an extreme situation and reveals the importance of intersite magnetic correlations beyond the local Kondo picture.

Abstract:A Kondo lattice is often electrically insulating at low temperatures. However, several recent experiments have detected signatures of bulk metallicity within this Kondo insulating phase. In this study, we visualized the real-space charge landscape within a Kondo lattice with atomic resolution using a scanning tunneling microscope. We discovered nanometer-scale puddles of metallic conduction electrons centered around uranium-site substitutions in the heavy-fermion compound uranium ruthenium silicide (URu 2 Si 2 ) and around samarium-site defects in the topological Kondo insulator samarium hexaboride (SmB 6 ). These defects disturbed the Kondo screening cloud, leaving behind a fingerprint of the metallic parent state. Our results suggest that the three-dimensional quantum oscillations measured in SmB 6 arise from Kondo-lattice defects, although we cannot exclude other explanations. Our imaging technique could enable the development of atomic-scale charge sensors using heavy-fermion probes.

Abstract:We discuss coexistence of Kondo and spin excitation signals in tunneling spectroscopy in strongly correlated polyradical $\pi$-magnetic nanographenes on a metal surface. The Kondo signal is rationalized by a multi-orbital Kondo screening of the unpaired electrons. The fundamental processes are spin-flips of antiferromagnetic (AFM) order involving charged molecular multiplets. We introduce a~perturbative model, which provides simple rules to identify the presence of AFM channels responsible for Kondo screening. The Kondo regime is confirmed by numerical renormalization group calculations. This framework can be applied to similar strongly correlated open-shell systems.

Abstract:The Kondo lattice: a question of scale The two types of magnetic order that appear in metals have very different origins: 'itinerant-electron' magnetism occurs where a spin-density wave instability in a sea of itinerant electrons causes magnetic order, and 'local-moment' magnetism occurs where magnetic order comes from an instability in a liquid of local atomic magnetic moments. A class of strongly correlated electron materials exist, the heavy-electron intermetallic compounds such as alloys containing Ce or Yb, that bridges these two extremes, with itinerant-electron magnetism reigning at low temperature and local-moment magnetism at high temperature. It has been a long-standing goal to quantitatively describe the transition between the two and to discover what determines its temperature scale. Yang et al . now report a simple semiquantitative solution to the latter problem that provides a new framework for interpreting the physics of heavy electron materials. This offers the prospect to quantitatively determine the physical origin of some of the remarkable properties, such as their superconducting behaviour.

Abstract:We report on the observation of the Kondo effect for single iron phthalocyanine(FePc) magnetic molecules on an Au(111) surface using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy.Two different Fano resonances induced by the Kondo effect have been observed experimentally.Through theoretical simulation and analysis we find that these two resonances correspond to different molecular adsorption sites.Adsorption sites play an important role both in the line shape of Fano resonances and in the strength of the spin-electron coupling.This provides an effective and practical method for tuning the spin-related properties of magnetic impurities on metal surfaces.
Competing States in the Two-Dimensional Frustrated Kondo-Necklace Model

Abstract:The interplay between Kondo screening, indirect magnetic interaction and geometrical frustration is studied in the two-dimensional Kondo-necklace model on the triangular lattice. Using infinite projected entangled pair states (iPEPS), we compute the ground state as a function of the antiferromagnetic local Kondo interaction $J_K$ and the Ising-type direct spin-spin interaction $I_z$ . As opposed to previous studies, we do not find partial Kondo screening (PKS) in the isotropic limit $I_z = 0$ but the same behavior as in the unfrustrated case, i.e. a direct phase transition between the paradigmatic phases of the Doniach competition: (i) a disordered phase consisting of local spin-singlets at strong $J_K$ and (ii) a magnetically ordered phase at weak $J_K$ . For $I_z > 0$, we find a PKS ground state but again in opposite to previous studies, we find that the PKS ground state is in strong competition with a second ground state candidate not found before. This state is characterized by a strongly polarized central spin in each hexagon and its anti-parallel, weakly polarized (i.e. partially screened) neighbors. We name it central spin (CS) phase.

Abstract:We consider the competition between the Kondo screening effect andferromagnetic long-range order (FLRO) within a mean-field theory of the Kondolattice model for low conduction electron densities n_c. Depending on theparameter values, several types of FLRO ground states are found. Whenn_c<0.16, a polarized FLRO phase is dominant. For 0.16<n_c<0.82, anon-polarized FLRO phase appears in the weak Kondo coupling region; while inthe intermediate coupling region the ground state corresponds to the polarizedand non-polarized FLRO phases, respectively, coexisting with the Kondoscreening. For a strong Kondo coupling, the product of pure Kondo singlets isthe ground state. Moreover, we also find that a weak magnetic field makes thepure Kondo singlet phase vanish, while the non-polarized FLRO state with theKondo screening spans a large area in the phase diagram.

Abstract:The competition between the Kondo screening and indirect magnetic exchange in systems with two magnetic impurities coupled to a conventional s-wave superconductor gives rise to a nontrivial ground-state phase diagram. Here, we utilize the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method and exploit the non-abelian spin-SU(2) symmetry to study the phase diagram for two quantum-spin-$\frac12$ impurities locally exchange coupled to large one-dimensional chains. The nonlocal inter-impurity exchange is treated as an emergent Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling. We find qualitatively different phase diagrams for impurity spins coupled to sites with odd or even distances $d$ on the chain and a partial-Kondo-screened spin-doublet phase that extends over the whole range of local exchange couplings $J$ in the limit of weak superconducting pairing strength $\Delta$. Our numerical studies are complemented by exact diagonalization of small (quantum-box) systems and by perturbative-in-$J$ computations of the $d$ and $\Delta$ dependent RKKY interaction. It is thereby demonstrated that the specific system geometry is essential for our understanding of magnetic impurity interactions in superconducting hosts, and thus for insights into the control of quantum-state properties in nanoparticle systems and topological superconductivity.

Abstract:In metals and semiconductors, an impurity spin is quantum entangled with and thereby screened by surrounding conduction electrons at low temperatures, called the Kondo screening cloud. Quantum confinement of the Kondo screening cloud in a region, called a Kondo box, with a length smaller than the original cloud extension length strongly deforms the screening cloud and provides a way of controlling the entanglement. Here we realize such a Kondo box and develop an approach to controlling and monitoring the entanglement. It is based on a spin localized in a semiconductor quantum dot, which is screened by conduction electrons along a quasi-one-dimensional channel. The box is formed between the dot and a quantum point contact placed on a channel. As the quantum point contact is tuned to make the confinement stronger, electron conductance through the dot as a function of temperature starts to deviate from the known universal function of the single energy scale, the Kondo temperature. Nevertheless, the entanglement is monitored by the measured conductance according to our theoretical development. The dependence of the monitored entanglement on the confinement strength and temperature implies that the Kondo screening is controlled by tuning the quantum point contact. Namely, the Kondo cloud is deformed by the Kondo box in the region across the original cloud length. Our findings offer a way of manipulating and detecting spatially extended quantum many-body entanglement in solids by electrical means.

Abstract:We carefully consider the interplay between ferromagnetism and the Kondo screening effect in the conventional Kondo lattice systems at finite temperatures. Within an effective mean-field theory for small conduction electron densities, a complete phase diagram has been determined. In the ferromagnetic ordered phase, there is a characteristic temperature scale to indicate the presence of the Kondo screening effect. We further find two distinct ferromagnetic long-range ordered phases coexisting with the Kondo screening effect: spin fully polarized and partially polarized states. A continuous phase transition exists to separate the partially polarized ferromagnetic ordered phase from the paramagnetic heavy Fermi liquid phase. These results may be used to explain the weak ferromagnetism observed recently in the Kondo lattice materials.

Abstract:The electronic states of surface adatoms in Na(Fe0.96Co0.03Mn0.01) As have been studied by low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The spectra recorded on the adatoms display both superconducting coherence peaks and an asymmetric resonance in a larger energy scale. The Fano-type line shape of the spectra points towards a possible Kondo effect at play. The apparent energy position of the resonance peak shifts about 5 meV to the Fermi level when measured across the critical temperature, supporting that the Bogoliubov quasiparticle is responsible for the Kondo screening in the superconducting state. The tunneling spectra do not show the subgap bound states, which is explained as the weak pair breaking effect given by the weak and broad scattering potential after the Kondo screening.

Abstract:We report that the Kondo effect exerted by a magnetic ion depends on its chemical environment. A cobalt phthalocyanine molecule adsorbed on an Au(111) surface exhibited no Kondo effect. Cutting away eight hydrogen atoms from the molecule with voltage pulses from a scanning tunneling microscope tip allowed the four orbitals of this molecule to chemically bond to the gold substrate. The localized spin was recovered in this artificial molecular structure, and a clear Kondo resonance was observed near the Fermi surface. We attribute the high Kondo temperature (more than 200 kelvin) to the small on-site Coulomb repulsion and the large half-width of the hybridized d-level.
Observing the universal screening of a Kondo impurity

Abstract:The Kondo effect, deriving from a local magnetic impurity mediating electron-electron interactions, constitutes a flourishing basis for understanding a large variety of intricate many-body problems. Its experimental implementation in tunable circuits has made possible important advances through well-controlled investigations. However, these have mostly concerned transport properties, whereas thermodynamic observations - notably the fundamental measurement of the spin of the Kondo impurity - remain elusive in test-bed circuits. Here, with a novel combination of a "charge" Kondo circuit with a charge sensor, we directly observe the state of the impurity and its progressive screening. We establish the universal renormalization flow from a single free spin to a screened singlet, the associated reduction in the magnetization, and the relationship between scaling Kondo temperature and microscopic parameters. In our device, a Kondo pseudospin is realized by two degenerate charge states of a metallic island, which we measure with a non-invasive, capacitively coupled charge sensor. Such pseudospin probe of an engineered Kondo system opens the way to the thermodynamic investigation of many exotic quantum states, including the clear observation of Majorana zero modes through their fractional entropy.

Dynamic mass generation and topological order in overscreened Kondo lattices

Abstract:Multichannel Kondo lattice models are examples of strongly correlated electronic systems that exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior due to the presence of a continuous channel symmetry. Mean-field analyses have predicted that these systems undergo channel symmetry breaking at low temperature. We use the dynamical large-$N$ technique to study temporal and spatial fluctuations of the multichannel Kondo model on a honeycomb lattice and find that this prediction is not generally true. Rather, we find a 2+1D conformally invariant fixed point, governed by critical exponents that are found numerically. When we break time-reversal symmetry by adding a Haldane mass to the conduction electrons, three phases, separated by continuous transitions, are discernible: one characterized by dynamic mass generation and spontaneous breaking of the channel symmetry, one where topological defects restore channel symmetry but preserve the gap, and one with a Kondo-coupled chiral spin liquid. We argue that the last phase is a fractional Chern insulator with anyonic excitations.

Abstract:Since the discovery of graphene, a tremendous amount of two dimensional (2D) materials have surfaced. Their electronic properties can usually be well understood without considering correlations between electrons. On the other hand, strong electronic correlations are known to give rise to a variety of exotic properties and new quantum phases, for instance, high temperature superconductivity, heavy fermions and quantum spin liquids. The study of these phenomena has been one of the main focuses of condensed matter physics. There is a strong incentive to introduce electronic correlations into 2D materials. Via intercalating a van der Waals layered compound VS_2, we show an emergence of a Kondo lattice, an extensively studied strongly correlated system, by magnetic, specific heat, electrical and thermoelectric transport studies. In particular, an exceptionally large Sommerfeld coefficient, 440 mJ·K^-2·mol^-1, indicates a strong electron correlation. The obtained Kadowaki-Woods ratio, 2.7× 10^-6 μΩ·cm·mol^2·K^2·mJ^-2, also supports the strong electron-electron interaction. The temperature dependence of the resistivity and thermopower corroborate the Kondo lattice picture. The intercalated compound is one of a few rare examples of d-electron Kondo lattices. We further show that the Kondo physics persists in ultra-thin films. This work thus demonstrates a route to generate strong correlations in 2D materials.
Tuning the Kondo Effect Via Gating-Controlled Orbital Selection in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 Interfacial D-Electron System

Abstract:The orbital degree of freedom plays a critical role in contemporary condensed-matter physics, with recent discoveries of orbital-dependent many-body effects including electron correlation and superconductivity. Nevertheless, these orbital-dependent many-body effects have mainly been observed in bulk materials, wherein the electrons' orbital attribute is challenging to tailor selectively. Here, by planar tunneling into the two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface, we observed a Kondo resonance, a model many-body phenomenon. The observation of the Kondo resonance provides an ideal opportunity to quantitatively exploit the emerging interfacial Kondo physics. Furthermore, it was found that the Kondo coupling strength and resonance line shape can be effectively regulated by electrostatic gating and show a sharp transition at the Lifshitz point, where the orbital occupancy of the 2DES changes from only d(xy) to both d(xy) and d(xy/yz). This unusual behavior is attributed to the orbital selectivity effect in this unique multiple-d-band system, wherein the itinerant d(xy) and d(xy/yz) electrons have different orbital symmetries and therefore different Kondo exchange coupling with the localized d(xy) electrons. The present study may pave the way for manipulating many-body effects in 2D multiband materials via orbital engineering of itinerant electrons.
