Abstract:N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) functionalized MCM-41 was synthesized by reacting 1,3-bis-(4-allyl-2,6-diisopropylphenyl) imidazolium chloride with MCM-41 using 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane as silane coupling agent, and its CO2 adduct (designated as MCM-41-IPr-CO2) was further synthesized by the reaction with CO2. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) was used to investigate the reversible CO2 capture-release ability of MCM-41-NHC. MCM-41-IPr-CO2 adduct proved to be an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides or aziridines with excellent regioselectivity under mild conditions. Moreover, the catalyst could be recovered easily through a simple filtration process and reused multiple times without obvious loss in activity, owing to CO2 as protective group for effectively stabilizing the NHC anchored on MCM-41.

Abstract:As a major greenhouse gas, the continuous increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has caused serious environmental problems, although CO2 is also an abundant, inexpensive, and nontoxic carbon source. Here, we use metal-organic framework (MOF) with highly ordered hierarchical structure as adsorbent and catalyst for chemical fixation of CO2 at atmospheric pressure, and the CO2 can be converted to the formate in excellent yields. Meanwhile, we have successfully integrated highly ordered macroporous and mesoporous structures into MOFs, and the macro-, meso-, and microporous structures have all been presented in one framework. Based on the unique hierarchical pores, high surface area (592 m(2)/g), and high CO2 adsorption capacity (49.51 cm(3)/g), the ordered macroporous-mesoporous MOFs possess high activity for chemical fixation of CO2 (yield of 77%). These results provide a promising route of chemical CO2 fixation through MOF materials.

Abstract:Chemical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) fixation over heterogenous catalysts under more realistic conditions enables the acceleration of the global carbon cycle. Despite the recent advances, many catalysts often suffer from chemical lability, mass transfer resistance, as well as single catalytic species. To this end, this work demonstrates a metal-organic framework (MOF)-templated thermolysis to give bimetallic oxides, Cu x Zn y -BMOs, featuring hierarchically porous structures. By varying the initial molar ratio of Cu/Zn, the local coordination environment can be adjusted, thus regulating the type and quantity of active species. Together with its abundant active sites and appropriate pore size, the optimized Cu 1 Zn 2 -BMO not only achieves a high activity (98% yield) for the coupling of CO 2 and epichlorohydrin under solvent-free mild conditions, but also promotes the N-formylation of CO 2 with amines. Worthy to note, the decent chemical stability endows Cu 1 Zn 2 -BMO with almost unchanged performance even after long exposure to humidity. Our study offers a reliable strategy for the structure regulation of catalysts to enhance practical CO 2 catalytic conversion.

Abstract:Ionic liquid immobilization is an effective means for preparing metal-free heterogeneous catalysts for the CO 2 conversion. Herein, a series of quaternary ammonium ionic liquids functionalized MCM-41 heterogeneous catalysts, integrating hydrogen bond donors and nucleophilic ion sites, were prepared by a post-synthetic modification method for the CO 2 cycloaddition reaction. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were analyzed by XRD, EA, SEM, TEM, BET, FT-IR, TGA, NMR and XPS. The results show that the quaternary ammonium ionic liquids are successfully immobilized onto the MCM-41 molecular sieves. The obtained catalysts maintain an excellent pore structure and have the good thermal stability. The effects of catalytic conditions on the catalytic performance, the recyclability of the catalysts and their generalizability to epoxide substrates were systematically investigated. In addition, the catalytic performance was evaluated for low concentrations of CO 2 (20% CO 2 , 80% N 2 ). The synergy of multifunctional active sites makes the obtained materials exhibit the high catalytic activity without metals, co-catalysts and solvents. Furthermore, a possible mechanism for the conversion of CO 2 to cyclic carbonate catalyzed by the MCM-41-N/CH 3 (1:3) was proposed.

Abstract:Two flexible tetracarboxylic acids with ether (H4AOIA) and amine (H4ANIA) linkages have been employed for the formation of two distinct Co-metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with diverse architectures. Both the MOFs were shown to demonstrate remarkable catalytic activities for the chemical conversion of CO2 into cyclic carbonates under ambient reaction conditions with considerably high turnover number values. Further, carbonization of the two-dimensional-MOF, Co-ANIA, under inert atmospheric conditions at a temperature of 800 °C resulted in the formation of cobalt containing N-doped nanocomposite (). In the context of generation of a sustainable source of energy and to carry out successive conversions, the single-component nanocomposite, , was shown to act as an efficient cost-effective non-noble metal electrocatalyst through its electrochemical activity toward hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:AbstractChemical fixation of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value‐added organics is regarded as a competitive and viable method in large scale industrial production, during which the catalysts with promoting CO2 activation ability are needed. Herein, we proposed an in‐plane heterostructure strategy to construct Lewis acid–base sites for efficient CO2 activation. By taking ultrathin in‐plane Cu2O/Cu heterostructures as a prototype, we show that Lewis acid‐base sites on heterointerface can facilitate a mixed C and O dual coordination on surface, which not only strengthen CO2 adsorption, but also effectively activate the inert molecules. As revealed by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and quasi in situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Lewis acid‐base sites could readily activate CO2 to .CO2− species, which is the key intermediate radical for CO2 fixation. As a result, abundant Lewis acid–base sites endow Cu2O/Cu nanosheets with excellent performances for dimethyl carbonate generation, a high conversion yield of 28 % with nearly 100 % selectivity under mild conditions. This study provides a model structure for CO2 fixation reactions.

Abstract:The functionalized MCM-41 mesoporous bound ruthenium complex was synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, BET, XRD and FTIR. Hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to formic acid was investigated over these catalysts under supercritical CO2 condition. The effect of reactant gas partial pressure, supports, solvents and ligands on the synthesis of formic acid was studied. These factors could influence the catalyst activity, stability and reuse performance greatly and no byproduct was detected. These promising catalysts also offered the industrial advantages such as easy separation.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) utilization and one-pot Hantzsch condensation denote two important protocols pertinent to sustainable agenda because of the obvious advantages like reduction in chemical usage, short reaction time, and minimum waste generation. To this end, the astute combination of optimum-sized pore structure with built-in Lewis acid center in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can bring about such reactions under energetically favorable conditions and offer a step forward to size-exclusive catalysis. The chemoresistant and twofold interpenetrated Cu(II) framework CSMCRI-13 (CSMCRI = Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute) is built from a C3-symmetric tricarboxylate ligand and an N,N'-donor linker that undergo incisive amalgamation of the paddle-wheel [Cu2(COO)4] secondary building unit (SBU) and the intrinsically unsaturated Cu(II) node with four coordination. The microporous structure features a dual-pore containing cage-like network with free oxygen-atom-enriched cavities and exhibits appreciable CO2 adsorption with moderate MOF-CO2 interaction in activated form (13a). Benefitting from both, the coordinatively frustrated metal center containing MOF acts as a highly synergistic and solvent-free catalyst in CO2 cycloaddition reaction under an 8 bar CO2 pressure at 70 °C in 6 h. The catalyst furnished admirable reactivity and fair recyclability with a wide range of substrates, wherein sterically encumbered and long-chain epoxides produced poor conversion. This MOF further executes highly regenerable Hantzsch condensation reaction under mild condition with superior activity to contemporary materials, where most of the 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives are additionally characterized through the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Importantly, mechanistic proof of the tricomponent condensation involving built-in Lewis acid sites is validated from several control experiments and in-depth analytical studies. To the best of the single-step multicomponent reaction, substrate molecules having incompatible molecular dimension to that of pore size of the framework resulted insignificant conversion and demonstrated the first-ever pore-fitting-induced size selectivity in Hantzsch condensation.

Abstract:N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are found to be efficient halogen-free organocatalysts for chemical conversion of CO2, however, their inherent nature is sensitive to water and air, which leads to limitations in practical applications. In this work, we demonstrate the halogen- and metal-free methods for chemical fixation of CO2 into valuable chemicals of cyclic carbonates and methylamines using air and water-stable organocatalysts of imidazolium hydrogen carbonate ionic liquids (CnCmImHCO3). Good to excellent yields of cyclic carbonates and methylamines are obtained for varied substrates under mild conditions. Mechanism insight shows that the CnCmImHCO3, as an organic pre-catalysts for N-heterocyclic carbene, can balance to carbene CO2 adduct (CnCmIm-CO2) serving as the active species for conversion of CO2. As a result, the halogen- and metal-free organocatalysts of CnCmImHCO3 again emphasize that are possible to replace traditional carbenes and offer an environment-friendly methodology for chemical fixation of CO2.

Abstract:Conjugated microporous Polymers (CMPs) are an emerging porous material with a high specific surface area, which has a wide range of applications in heterogeneous catalysis and gas separation etc. Here we report a new class of Zn-salen based conjugated microporous polymer (Zn-salen-CMP) by Sonogashira-Hagihara coupling reaction from the Zn-salen compound and 1,3,5-tris[4 '-(ethynyl)phenyl]benzene. Abstract:Global warming and climate change are two severe environmental dangers brought on by the steady rise in the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the atmosphere. Thus, in order to reduce this problem, it is essential to find an efficient material for high CO2 capture that can simultaneously exhibit good catalytic activity for CO2 utilization into useful chemicals. Herein, we report the synthesis of N-heterocyclic carbene-based porous organic polymers (NHC-01 and NHC-02) using the Friedel–Crafts reaction with the imidazolium salt and bi-phenyl. Among the two porous polymers, NHC-01 exhibited outstanding stability, high flexibility, and high BET surface area (1298 m2 g–1). NHC-01 material displayed a high CO2 uptake capacity of 2.85 mmol g–1 under 1.0 bar pressure at 273 K. NHC-01/02 has been utilized as a metal-free organocatalyst for the CO2 conversion reaction due to its high surface area, high CO2 absorption capacity, and as it bears the NHC moiety in the organic network. NHC-01 selectively reduced CO2 to methanol via hydrosilylation with complete conversion of silane under atmospheric CO2 pressure. Furthermore, the catalyst also shows good catalytic activity toward N-formylation and reductive cyclization reactions, which showed good yields up to at least four catalytic cycles. The reaction mechanisms are also studied by theoretical simulation using density functional theory (DFT), which shows that intermediates have the appropriate free energy level for the catalyst to promote the reaction with a low energy barrier.
